Friday Flick – Cadent

This should be in the “Best of the Web” category at next years Drake Film Awards.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Shooting Line can be a Drag – More from Mike McCune

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/193638623″][vc_column_text]More from the Godfather, Mike McCune. One of the most common questions I get at our spey clinics is “how do I manage and handle my running line while spey casting?”. I try to avoid answering this. It’s a personal thing, and there are many opinions and methods for accomplishing this task. Hold line with two-hands or one? Bottom hand or top? Or my mouth? big loops or small? And on and on and on…

In this short video, Mike gives you a basic method for short line management and one for longer amounts of line. If you constantly battle shooting line drag, watch this. I also like this variation from Deneki.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Shit Skiers Say Video

In homage to the lack of snow here in the west we post Shit Skiers Say today on the Headhunters Blog.

Not much in the way of fall or even winter weather as of late. Nothing of substance for the last six weeks.

It will come, eventually. Maybe.

Do the snow dance in your living room today whilst watching football.

I know we will.

Bring it.

Rainbow Czech Nymph Tying Video JAV

RAINBOW CZECH NYMPH

The legendary Rainbow Czech was popularized on the Missouri River by the crew at Headhunters. Works every day of the year. We’ve put together this Rainbow Czech Nymph Fly Tying kit that will allow you to tie up 2 dozen flies for your next fishing trip.

This fly is tied on to so many fishermen on the Missouri it will boggle you mind. Blown man.

The reason? This fly works 24/7. Honest.

Our number 1 selling fly pattern in the store too. The reason? This fly rules.

Tie it up in sizes 10-20 for all season, shoot all year long, angling success.

Our JUST ADD “VISE” fly tying kits are super popular and this one is no different. These kits are designed for tyers who have grasped the basic moves of fly tying, and are priced just as if you bought the materials individually. The package comes with everything needed to tie 2 dozen flies, and has a material list included so you can re-supply when needed. You can watch our short “how-to” videos if you need help with a step or two. These are just fantastic, and are great for those camped out on the Missouri River. Just make sure you have your vice, scissors and bobbin. If not, we have that stuff as well!

Order this and a few others for your late Autumn tying session. Then visit us not he Mo for the best November treat you could ever dream of.

It’s snowing again today…perfect.

Took some work and some bushwhacking but we got some very nice footage, and of course Pat’s incredible underwater still images. And this is Pat’s first serious effort with some underwater video. Really cool watching big Bull Trout pay Pat no never mind. That’s what Apex predators do.

If you like Pat’s images – and you’re a social media buff – I highly recommend following him on Facebook. Great images, humor and some conservation commentary. I’ve said it before, but Pat’s devotion to trout and the rivers they inhabit is incredible.

Calm too. Did I mention that? I should talk about less and less.

We got 6 of the 50th Anniversary Grateful Dead Abel reels. All of them were purchased before they arrived. One feller went radio silence with a the reel below and a rod. The reel in question is a Abel Super 6N.

Why not pick up the last Super 7-8N Grateful Dead Dancing Bears too. A matching set.

Wednesday Missouri River Montana Fishing Report

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Wednesday Missouri River Montana Fishing Report Damn good dry fly fishing. Most of the anglers I saw on Tuesday were toying with the dry fly. Good on them. Wilderness Cutthroat – Video

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/171623459″][vc_column_text]I’ve spent a little time walking around in the woods with Pat Clayton this spring and early summer. Fishing the mountains and looking for interesting things to take pictures of. For those who don’t know, Pat Clayton is the worlds underwater trout photographer. You probably know whim as “Fisheye Guy Photography“. Last week we were chasing Cutthroat around in some high elevation streams and lakes, and ran into this incredible spawning ritual. Dead-centered it, as they say. Pat began taking some of his superb still images, and after doing the same from above the water, I decided to shoot some video of this incredible scene. I could have sat there and watched this for a couple of days.

Wait, I did…

And no, we did not fish. They spawnin’!

When I got home, I decided there was enough material for a short edit. A kind of “tribute’ to our native Cutthroat Trout, and the Summer Solstice. Many in the Northern Rockies associate Cutthroat  Trout with Wilderness. Much the same that Elk and Grizzlies are symbolic of the backcountry. We’ve combined Pat’s underwater still photography (always incredible) with my video to produce this “unfishing” production. If you’re serious about trout, the environment, native species and habitat, you’ll probably dig it. And if you love high-elevation Cutthroat Trout you’ll really dig it. If you’re looking for some hip-hop (or banjo’s?) and millennial, flat-brimmed, bearded, badassery – you’ll have to look elsewhere. There’s no fishing in this one.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]This is full time business for Pat. He’s a Fine Artist, and makes the majority of his income selling large prints. Constantly on the lookout for new subjects and places to shoot, he is either a) hiking the high country and looking for underwater photography opportunities, or b) at home on the computer editing those images, or c) scouring the back-allies of Bozeman and Livingston for high-lake intel. In the winter he skis. It’s been quite an experience for me to tag along on a few of his missions. Seen some awfully cool stuff this spring.

You can too. But you can’t drive to these spots, and there’s no fly shop or shuttles available. You won’t get an up to date fishing report except from yourself. Pat and I have failed, succeeded and hit a couple of home runs this spring. So put on your boots and go, it’s pretty fun stuff.

Check out Pat’s photography at:

Always worth the trip Blackfoot River Video

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Headed over the mountain this morning to the Blackfoot River.

The big bugs are coming off. So we hope that the orange monsters are keeping those cutthroats busy.

Gotta go to know.

It is always worth the trip…

As for the Mighty Mo we see very good dry fly angling available. Are all of the fish looking toward the surface? No. But enough are poking their noses through the surface film.

Caddis and PMD’s are the key. Crips, emergers, and spinners. Not new news. Just a reminder that the trout on the Mo like the fly trapped in the film.

Buzzballs?

No negative reinforcement from the Buzzball. No wing profile, no body silhouette type, no bad shit at all. Just a good meal for an honest rise.

A few tips for getting a better bite on the Mo? Go out after 10am. No rush in the morning for the dry flies as of yet. As the spinners become an event we will be out earlier. But until then head out after the crowd and wander around finding a few singles and the crescendo to Valhalla.

Easy peasy.

Fishing is good all over the state. Enjoy Montana this summer and look us up if you are in the neighborhood.

Open daily 7-9. We are dedicated to the sport of fly in Craig MT.

Headhunting with the Sage PULSE

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Lots of Headhunters around this month on the Mo. A recent tool of choice?

The PULSE by Sage. My dentist just bought one yesterday.

He’s sold.

He said the PULSE is only half the price of a root canal.

We are too. Our best selling Sage rod this year, and last too. Gotta get your hands on one here at Headhunters. We have the demo rods ready to go. Or just pop in and take one out for keeps. At $450 it is hard to say no. No?

Headhunters are honing their skills for the next ten weeks fishing Montana’s Missouri River. Think bout your tools and whether you want to step it up this year. Casting lessons? Practicing in your cast in the yard? Tying dry fly leaders? Or just fantasizing about sipping trout.

Come on out and make your fantasies into reality this summer with a Sage in your hand.

Enjoy your Sunday if it is not on the river here in central Montana. Enjoy the Sage PULSE video shot right here on the Mighty Mo.

Mobile (or not) Video Fishing Report

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]If you check out the home page of the Headhunters Website today, you see a tall skinny video in the blog section, featuring our new Mobile Video Fishing Report. We’ve threatened to do this for years. Looks like we’re actually following through. Instead of a detailed fishing report, this will be more of a monthly overview of the conditions we are experiencing, and those you should expect. Hopefully you’ll enjoy some nice footage along the way.

We’re also going to use this to feature some of our staff and guides. But don’t worry, I’m sure Mark and others you’re familiar with will be reporting as well.

Why is it tall and skinny? Check it out on you mobile device and you’ll see why. Easy to watch full screen with one hand. No turning your device sideways. Of course you can still watch it on your desktop.

This is referred to as “vertical video” and is very controversial among film makers. Meaning they hate it.  But like a lot of folks, I watch many (most?) videos on my phone. It makes sense. Think about it.

And for those wondering why, almost half of our website visits are on mobile devices. An indication of both our customers tech-saviness and age, and hopefully a result of the hard work we’ve put in trying to keep our site mobile friendly.

And for the first test edition, here’s Shane Wilson who hammered them on nymphs the other day when we filmed this. Just Add Vise Zebra Kit

Just Add Vise Zebra Kit

Just Add Vise Zebra Kit

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Ninch wanted me to shout this out to our Headhunters followers. The Zebra Midge I said? It’s so simple and easy to tie. Why would we post this on our blog. While we love Trout Fishing 101 I thought that it was old news.

Ninch nodded then explained to me that while it is an easy fly to tie it is still an important daily, weekly, staple pattern that we all should have in our box. Not only the simple traditional black Zebra but other flavors as well.

Ninch said that this kit while coming with the standard 25 hooks that all JAV kits include it has the addition of 4 thread colors. Black, red, olive, and purple. Find yourself a few boxes of size 20 hooks and spin ’em up.

Ninch also said that if you tie up all the thread in this kit the per fly cost falls below the 50 cent mark. Well below.

Ninch then said that if you switch up wire colors you can now create literally dozens of patterns. Add mylar, tinsel, or any number of different synthetics to the game and the possibilities are endless for midge creation.

So I said to Ninch, “Why don’t you write a blog about it?” He shook his head, paused, then nodded towards me. In Ninch silent speak that clearly meant that I would be writing the blog.

Ninch wins again.

Buy the Zebra Midge Just Add Vise kit below or here on the on-line store.

Listen to the River: A Packraft Adventrue

Listen to the River: A Packraft Adventure

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Cool video today from up on the Bob. This gang really has some balls, and legs. Makes us here on the Mo look lazy. Towing boats behind SUV’s!

Wild Confluence Films brings us this pleasant video on this snowy and cold Friday in central Montana. Enjoy.

6 friends set out into Montana’s legendary Bob Marshall wilderness to float and fly fish the pristine South Fork Flathead River. Two days of hiking takes the crew 25 miles up the banks of this roadless river. On the 3rd day the team inflates their pack rafts and begins the float on this wild river. The fishing does not disappoint, and the Wild Confluence crew dines on cutthroat trout each night. The 4 day float back to the trailhead is cut short on the final night when the team learns that the nearby wildfires have begun to rage toward them (several photos capture the smokey sky and orange glow of the fire). The out of control fire burns four miles away, nearly destroying their cars in the parking lot but luckily doesn’t incinerate them! The team is forced to evacuate – hiking thirty miles in a day over a seldom traveled 8000 foot pass to escape the wildfire.

Adipose Flow New Boat Smell for the New Year

Adipose Flow New Boat Smell for the New Year

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Adipose Flow. New Boat Smell for the New Year

I picked up my new Adipose Flow yesterday. I’m pretty stoked.

Not long ago I thought I would row my Clackacraft Guide LP for life. I would have been just fine if had not rowed the Adipose Flow. Then, I became a believer.

New Boat Smell Adipose Boatwrks
Out with the old and in with the new. See you down the river old girl…

No compromises is the Adipose Mantra. I’m on board. Truly a perfect boat for our fine river. The skiff style has come on strong he past 10 years. All of the popular boat manufacturers offer a skiff design and Adipose is no different. Except Adipose does not offer anything but the skiff. No pointy ended type boats.

I once shot a TV show called The Gypsy Angler with Stu Apte. I had just started rowing my Adipose Flow. I was washing it out before the first day of shooting and the producer walked up to me and asked where my boat was. I said that he was looking at it. He then stated that it would not work for the show. I of course asked why not? And he said that the viewers would identify more with one of those Montana pointy ended boats more than this floating sandbox!

So we did the show with the sandbox. Much to the producers chagrin.

Not that I’m stubborn…

So I have my second new drifter in 4 years. Would I have rowed that one til I was buried at sea? Yes. But with some of the advances in the last couple years at Adipose I upgraded, bit the bullet, and got myself into a new one.

Adipose always Improving

Some cool new tweaks include a touch higher knee brace. Better shaped knee brace with a more defined hip and leg grabber. Positive closing side compartments. Narrower tolerances with the knee brace tubes. Way more solid. Improved trailer rollers with smooth bearings allowing easier cranking at the end of the day. Side tray locks.  Double front seat option and many more.

New Boat Smell Adipose Boatworks
Bass seat fitted for the hardcore streamer anglers of the Mighty Missouri River

The fit and finish is continually improving as well. Not really all that noticeable to the untrained eye but overall appearance is tight. A sound craft for sure.

Did you see the image to the right? My new bass seat option for hardcore streamer anglers. If you like to strip steamers you know that there is a ton of line at your feet, wrapped around the seat if you are standing, and tangles happen way too often. So two years ago a guest and I brainstormed this idea up. Why not put a tiny bass seat on the front or rear seat and rest on the seat using it as your third point for balance and cast away? Would it reduce line tangles on the seat? Would it work? Would it solve some of the problems?

I don’t know yet because the boat has a cover on it and is resting in my front yard full of snow. The river is slushy up to Craig. Really icebergy out there with shelf ice breaking from the shore and creating shelf ice islands floating throughout the river. But, I expect to put the boat in the water in the next week and test that bass seat out. The beauty is that the seats switch out easily (you can see the regular seat on the floor behind the bass seat) and I have the normal ultra comfortable seats ready to go. So a report will follow in the front end of 2016.

Outside Media who produces TroutTV just picked up Adipose as a sponsor. Look forward to seeing them drifting, fishing, and shooting around Montana and beyond in the Adipose Flow.

Row the Adipose Flow @ Headhunters Fly Shop

All of our rental boats are Adipose Flow Skiffs. Te perfect match for a tailwater river like ours. After using Clackacraft boats for rentals a few years the Adipose Concept was hatched on our deck with help of Headhuntes own John Arnold. He put together Tracy Allen and Mike Ward with a few beers from our now missing YETI cooler and one year later we had Adipose Boatworks manufacturing the updated High Country Drifters in the form of the Adipose Flow Skiff.

Clients enjoy the ease of rowing and freedom of movement as the two top reasons it has become a Montana river favorite. Now Adipose has boats all over the country and continues to grow in local, regional, and national popularity.

These fellers are great to work with with General Manager Justin at the helm these days and Marcie up front. Mike and Tracy are around but also pursuing other side projects. After huffing resin fumes for a few years everybody needs a break. Give Justin a call and get your new 2016 boat in the mold!

Some Flicks.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Here’s a couple of fly fishing videos I recently viewed. That I like. Hide under your desk for a few minutes and watch. Or pretend that you just received some incredibly important email. Thats what I do.[/vc_column_text][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/145062548″][us_separator size=”custom” height=”32px”][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/144622860″][us_separator size=”custom” height=”32px”][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/139464907″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Badfish TV

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]A pretty cool new website called BADFISH.tv appeared a few weeks ago.   For those who like fly fishing videos, this is a one stop shopping option, an aggregator of all fishing videos. Or most.

It’s based on a very simple, uber-clean mobile-friendly UI. You just scroll infinitely. It looks like as videos get likes, they move “up” the board.

I was invited to sign up recently and didn’t when I was prompted to “sign-up”, which I rarely do. Today I decided to give it a go. All it asks is for an email/password, then asks you to pick your categories for your feed. Easy

In all fairness, Orvis has provided a similar site at the TUG for over a year. They also have just about everything that’s out there. But there are a few differences.

BADFISH.tv offers a much more mobile-friendly design. If you watch fly fishing video’s on your phone – and most do – it offers a much better viewing and browsing experience.

You can also tailor your BADFISH.tv feed to show you what you want… “trout”, “flats”, “offshore”, “spearfishing”, etc. I’m waiting for “strange, dark, sarcastic, self-effacing fishing video’s” to be added to the categories.

Orvis has broader categories, but also includes “Gear” and “How-to”, which may be important to many.

Both are excellent sources of video content, just bit different. If you’re on your phone or iPad, BADFISDH definitely gets the nod.

Both, however, are far superior to attempting a search on Youtube or Vimeo, neither of which have great search functionality.[/vc_column_text][us_btn align=”center” link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Fbadfish.tv” style=”7″ label=”Go To BADFISHtv” custom_width=”200px” css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22font-size%22%3A%2218px%22%7D%7D”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Saturday Meditation

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]It’s July, and that means hot fishing, hot weather and sometimes some hot tempers. You people are too wound up. It’s just fly fishing!

Take ‘er easy this morning and check out some uber-mellow Scandinavian fly fishing. Calming tunes, Sea-trout, Howler Bros., and Hipsters who know how to dress without looking like fools. I wish I could pull off that look.

The Scandi crowd has this type of artsy-shallow-depth-of-field fly fishing film-making down to a science. Bravo.[/vc_column_text][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/126007330″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Arctic Seasons – Video

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Here is a sweet video that came through the feeds the other day. Incredible footage and fishing from those inspired filmmakers in Scandinavia (I think?).

These guys from Northern Europe always seem to combine great footage with some emotional narrative. They really love fly fishing. We get quite a few of these guys through the shop, and they tell us one reason they get so excited is that the season is very short in the far North. So short that they apparently go out and fish in the icebergs during the winter.

If you’re an Aurora Borealis nerd – like me – this video has you covered. Some great time lapse with people in it. Not sure how, but my guess is the camera operator told his buddy to go “sit on that rock with your rod and DON’T MOVE!” for an hour or so… cool stuff. Literally.[/vc_column_text][us_image image=”12169″ size=”full” link=””][vc_column_text]Theres also some wicked cool shades in this flick. Smith! Are you watching!

So check out this beautifully done video. If you’re roasting in the Montana heat this week, it’ll cool you off. Snow Is Gone! Sunday Good Times Video

It is definitely springtime. Blue-wings and March Browns are river wide. Caddis have begun to appear. The Caddis Fest is over.

This image in front of there shop is not today…no not at all. It is quite nice as the rains of yesterday have passed.

A song that I have been listening to these last few weeks is “Snow is Gone” by Josh Ritter. It’s a good springtime song. A great line from it is “I’m singing for the love of it, have mercy on the man who sings to be adored.” Hopefully we’re all fishing this week for the same reason – our love of it.

Everyone enjoys a good fish story, but that’s not why we do it. So don’t worry so much about getting the perfect picture of the big one, and remember why you’re standing in the river in the first place. And have mercy on the man or woman who’s out there to be adored.

This holiday weekend let’s get out there and celebrate spring together.

Montana Fishtales – Video

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]I recently spent a few days down in the Ruby Valley fishing with an old friend. Mike Stack and I used to guide together down in the “5 Rivers” area (Madison, Jefferson, Ruby, Beaverhead, Big Hole), and it is truly one of the best areas to live and fish in the West. Tons of big famous rivers with countless miles of spring creeks, ponds, irrigations ditches and mountain streams in between. All of them full of trout.

Mike is a great fisherman and guide. One of those guys who lives it. Definitely not a “lifestyler”. He took me to a private stretch of the Beaverhead River for the day and we put together this edit. Enjoy, and if you’re interested in fishing that area, give Mike a shout.[/vc_column_text][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/128331727″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Low Flows

Low Flows | Don’t Let Me Down

Will we have low water this year? Maybe.

Really looking like we will, according to me. That is my feeling. Mother Nature has her hand in the outcome though.

Generally the snow on the ground this time of year dictates the remainder of our water year. And this year is no different. Our drainage is registering

Will we be OK? Oh yeah. But it will not be the trout recruitment year that we experienced in the middle 90’s or in the ’08-’11 high water years.

No. Closer to normal snow falls and precip this last winter lead us down the road of lower than historically normal flows.

The river will feel like it is smaller. It feels like it already. Good etiquette is something we should strive for as we think about the summer ahead. Nothing wrong with being polite.

We will jump around and shake our asses during the weekly rain dance on our porch. Dance your own version in your living room. It’s cool.

Lake level is at 81.7%. We have a couple more months to fill it up. Will we make it to the 97th percentile effectively filling Canyon Ferry to the rim? Maybe. If it fills I think we can expect flows closer to 4K for the summer.

The latest from the folks who turn the knobs his below. Looks like a summer of flows in the mid 3’s. I’d prefer that over the low 3’s for sure. We all would.

Low Flows

Nad then, this from the Beatles. Don’t Let Me Down Rooftop. Classic.

Every time I think of the lower flows this summer, I think of this tune.

Hunter and Angler Dollars important to Montana

Hunter and Angler Dollars are important to Montana!

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]A quick video from the Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks today on the Headhunters Fly Shop Blog.

Winston Greely shoots and produces the videos for the department. Nice short vids about the topic of fish, wildlife,a dn parks. I see a theme there.

I met Winston 17 years ago here on the river. His love of the outdoors and fishing led him down the media path to a fantastic career with the FWP. Pretty cool stuff!

Ag dollars have fallen into 2nd place as recreation has led the way in terms of state dollars in the last decade. Hunter and Angler dollars are important and feed a bundle of Montana families.

We can only say thanks to you folks for making this state part of your lives while supporting the Outdoor Recreation businesses like ourselves.

Just Add Vise UV Para Ant Video

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Ants are flies that fish eat on the Missouri River.

Talk to any ol’ timer and he can tell you 12 stories about either floating any sort of rodent from a shingle…and a few stories about ants.

That’s truth there above. So today a Just Add Vise video from the aforementioned JAV fly kit only available at Headhunters Fly Shop.

Get your ants ready for the year ahead by tying this killer on the Mo’.

While we have many of our most popular flies online now, you will have to come in the store for the Just Add Vise kits. We have a small fly tying section as well with just enough stuff to get you through a tight spot if you need to whip up a few flies on your Missouri River fishing journey!

Fly Tying Night in America

Our biweekly tying event is again in Craig tonight @ Headhunters Fly Shop.

6-8pm with Ninch, Max and Braden, Mark, and maybe additional Headhunters around.

Come one come all to this relaxed fly tying affair.

Watch this on Hans Stephenson’s excellent website and store, Dakota Angler & Outfitter in Rapid City South Dakota. Make sure you swing by when traveling or visiting Rapid City.

You could add a little rainbow coloring to this pattern to make it more Missouri River like. Or not. Both work well!

Switch it Up – Montana Spey Video

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Here’s the latest edit, featuring the crew that stays around Craig for the winter, fishing the Missouri River with two-handed or “spey” gear. The class at our last Spey Clinic got to see the world premier. Aren’t you jealous?

[/vc_column_text][us_separator text=”MONTANA SPEY VIDEO” show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/113932956″][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_column_text]The last time I filmed a lot of early winter two-handed fishing was when Sara and I shot “Down & Across“, 3 years ago I think? Seems like ages. It’s one of my most viewed videos at 27K views. It seems that you like watching some spey casting and fishing on the Missouri River.

We’ve definitely got a bigger crew doing it now, both in the shop and on the river in general. Many of the rigs I see around Craig in the winter months are not towing a boat, but do have a magnetic rod holder on the roof holding a variety of switch and spey rods. We like to see that. Anglers like Terry Armstrong from Great Falls are out there several days a week.

This video features everyones favorite “Spey Witch” Sara Roholt, along with Ben McNinch, guides Mark Raisler and Beth Hood, and new player Erich Bittman (TroutNV), who makes all of that cool laser engraved stuff at the shop. Pretty diverse group of two-handed anglers. Ben and Sara are Missouri River gurus, and do a bit of Steelhead fishing in the Columbia Basin. Mark is kind of a “trout-only” angler who loves to cast. Beth fishes here in the winter and you can typically find her on the Morice and Bulkley Rivers in the fall. Erich grew up in the Puget Sound and leans towards the Skagit side of things. He fishes all over the place, but moved to Craig full time a few years ago, and you will see him out swinging on the Mo (summer and winter). If you attend any of the Spey Claves in the PNW you will see him there as well.

Also a shout out to Simon Perkins and Orvis, who is a huge supporter of small fly fishing video production, including my own. Check out tons of fly fishing videos on THE TUG

At any rate, the “Swing Season” has been great thus far, and we have a lot of nice weather in the forecast. Hopefully it will hold through the holidays so you can get out for a few days and enjoy the fishing. Int he meantime, enjoy some virtual fishing through Switch it Up – VIMEO LINK.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Ulf visits the Mo every year. Now.

It is certainly on his list of rivers to fish in the States.

We love seeing Ulf on the Missouri and getting the Swedish version of things. He also likes to laugh.

We like that about Ulf!

Here is a bit of video captured under the shadows of Holter Dam earlier this summer.

Thanks Ulf. Can’t wait to see you in 2015. Check out his Blog MadTrout here.

Beaver Bash 2014 – Beaver Island Carp

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]I’m sitting in the Traverse City, MI airport with Alex Landeen (above), waiting for our respective flights home. Alex to Tuscon, myself to Great Falls. We’ve both got our laptops out and are reviewing the images and video we captured on our first trip to Beaver Island. The typical verbal recap is going on as well. We both agree it’s an incredible place. Incredible.

I feel a little hungover, but I’m not. It’s more of a “cumulative” hangover from a week of fishing, dining and drinking with a great crew.

This trip was put together by Cameron Mortenson (TFM) and Kevin Morlock (Indigo Guide Service), with the idea of bringing a variety of blogger/media types to the hallowed Carp fishing grounds at Beaver Island. I felt fortunate to be invited with the likes of Cameron, photographer Alex Landeen, multi-media producer Matt Smythe, and carp aficionado Dan Frasier of Carp Pro.

[/vc_column_text][us_separator icon=”fas|star” show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][us_image image=”5543″ size=”full” link=”” onclick=”lightbox”][vc_column_text]Kevin Morlock (left) and Cameron Mortenson (right) heading out onto the flats on a rare calm morning.[/vc_column_text][us_separator icon=”fas|star” show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

The Island

Kevin Morlock runs a pro-operation along with guides Steve Martinez and Austin Adduci. Gear, flies, knowledge and – most importantly – company were all top shelf. Not only did they show us the fishing, they spent the evenings showing us around Beaver Island’s eating and drinking establishments. Definitely putting in long days, but as they put it, “Island Life” is a big part of the Beaver Island experience. By the end of the week, you feel like your part of the community.

We also had the chance to eat dinner (it was great everywhere) with Steve West from the Beaver Island Chamber of Commerce, who shared his thoughts on what makes Beaver Island so special. He pointed out that along with the great hunting (turkey’s, anyone?)and fishing, BI is a great family destination. Our guides agreed, and all have their families out for a week of island life during the 4th of July week.

Cameron and Kevin arranged lodging at the Fisherman’s House, a chill cottage right across from the harbor on the main drag. We walked everywhere, and because crime is non-existent in this paradise, left our gear out on the front porch. I think I was buzzed enough that I left my camera gear out there as well a time or two.

Instead of taking the ferry, we flew out on Island Airways, and the crew there was friendly and accommodating. I hear the 2.5 hour ferry ride is a blast as well, especially if you bring a few “boat drinks”.[/vc_column_text][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][us_image image=”5449″ size=”full” link=”” onclick=”lightbox”][us_separator icon=”fas|star” show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

The Fishing

It’s really hard to describe the fishing at Beaver Island. I had read about it, and the idyllic descriptions of “flats that make you think you’re in the Carribean” seemed overstated. They’re not. We had some rough weather during the week, but when the sun popped out, it did not seem like the Great Lakes. The flats are smooth and blue, and the water is as clear as any I’ve ever fished.

The Carp here are big, and they can be aggressive. They feed on small invasive fish called Goby’s, which remind me of the many small “bullheads” I caught growing up on the Puget Sound. So this isn’t nymph or slow leech Carp fishing. The flies are big. Bigger and heavier than most Permit flies. The fish hunt and chase. Bring your 9 weight.

We fished on foot and from the boat. Both were productive. I usually prefer fishing from the boat with some eyes up on the platform, but the fish are so easy to spot and the flats so wadeable that being on foot would be my choice. Looking for Carp in rough water on downwind beaches was a blast.

The fishing here is going to appeal to the sight-fishing and saltwater crowd. If you’re a “body-count” fisherman, it may be a little tougher than you want. Casts need to be long and accurate. Not easy with the heavy flies and long leaders we often threw at deep tailing fish. Body-count anglers would love the Smallmouth fishing that takes place a little later in the year, however.

While the fish and the fishing are great, all three of our guides acknowledged that the island and the community were a big part of what makes the Beaver Island experience so special. Would I go Back?

Absolutely. Especially with a great crew like we had on this trip. I was hesitant to participate in a trip with a group of anglers unknown to me, but Cameron nailed it. Combined with an excellent bunch of guides, it was perfect despite some nasty weather that chilled the water and our fishing.

And don’t forget that this is coming from a guy who has been know to dis’ Carp fishing. But this is so cool. I’m changing my mind, at least at this location.

I could see doing Beaver Island with my hardcore Keys buddies, or with my wife and daughter.

Restigouche Fall – Season’s on the Fly

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_video link=”http://youtu.be/kQoo-RZso1U”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]For those who were asking about the trip Ben Hardy and I made to the Restigouche River Lodge, New Brunswick, last year, here is the latest episode of Seasons On The Fly. SOF producer Greg Heister was in camp with us last fall, and even followed us around with a camera for a day or two.

You may have already seen this on TV, but if not, enjoy. A great representation of fall fishing on the Restigouche. You can view more episodes from Season’s On The Fly at Greg’s YouTube channel.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]
