Spring Sale!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]BIG Spring Sale this Friday and Saturday at Headhunters. We’re trying to make a little room by clearing out some merchandise from last fall, celebrating Spring, and declaring an “end” to both Swing Season on the Missouri, and out “Spring Special which ends on Saturday. We’re finishing off Swing Season in a big way with Spey-guru’s Mike McCune and Whitney Gould, who will be here through the weekend while offering their clinics on the Missouri River. If you’re not signed up for one of their clinics, you might be able to chat them up around the shop in the evenings.

Our Spring Sale will start Friday morning and go through Saturday evening at 8:00pm (maybe a little will be left over on Sunday?). We’ve got some great deals on fly lines (both single-hand and spey), sportswear (both mens and women) and outerwear, a few screaming deals on new fly rods and demo spey rods for sale as well. It’s been chilly and you might find a deal on baselayer items. You won’t find any deals on wading boots and sandals, unless you ask (limited sizes), but you will find the remaining stock of 2015 Headhunters T’s on sale along with the last of the Headhunters lids.

We will be marking more gear down and the weekend goes, so if you don’t see something you want on sale ask us. The worse we could say is no, right? Just depends on your behavior and out mood. If you’re not in the mood to shop, but are in the mood to fish, swing by before or after fishing and have a cup of coffee or a beer and say “hi”! Open 7am-8pm, as per usual.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Punxsutawney Phil sees early Spring

Punxsutawney Phil sees early Spring

Punxsutawney Phil sees early Spring

We have had a warm front end to the week and we see that the weather guessers think it will continue for some time. Is winter over? No, not by a long ways. But you cannot refute that Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow this last week!

Remember that Phil is only right 45% of the time. Meaning, he is as accurate as your financial advisor.

I thought about the warm spring like weather this week already and decided not to feel guilty about enjoying it while it is here. I certainly want more snow in the hills this winter for more water in the rivers this summer. We all do. But why not enjoy the air temps when they touch the 60F benchmark.

Implications of Phil’s Shadow

Punxsutawney Phil
Spring is King on the MO!

If Phil is right

Then we move forward into spring early. Get out your dry fly rods and midge boxes. Clean that fly line and practice a few times in the next couple weeks to improve your accuracy. Accuracy is important when pinpointing roaming and rangy midge feeding trout. Sort of…

Back on track. If Phil is right and we see an early spring we will see an increase in water temps which will advance the bug cycle. Early Midges, BWO’s, March Browns, Caddis, on and on. Warmer weather and early run-off. This is all pure speculation at this time.

If Phil is right we will be seeing a ton more anglers early in the year. We already have seen a bunch of familiar faces and new ones too. Most are interested in trying out that two handed stuff.

Punxsutawney Phil
More snow on the way?

If Phil is wrong

Then we are back on track. We do need more snow n the hills. Our wettest months are yet to come. February is the driest of them all. March, April, May and June bring the precipitation. Although as you may remember us saying on this blog the water managers claim that the 3 week of April is the tipping point. Whatever snow is on the ground at that time is what dictates our summer flow. There is more to it than that simplistic view, but essentially that is the nuts and bolts of that equation.

Not too many years ago, our first 4 years open in Craig, we had higher than average water. Lots higher! So it is not beyond Mother Nature to turn things around in a hurry. In ’08 or ’09 it looked lean until early April. Post Missouri River Annual Water Meeting it started raining. And did not stop. That can happen. So Phil while not being a genius, or even accurate…could be wrong.

A coin toss is more accurate than that damn hog.

We do know that Montanans are out in force. Cleaning their garage. Working on projects that they did not complete in the fall. Skiing a bunch. And of course fishing on the Mighty MO! Look us up this spring on the Missouri.

We have a Spring Special starting March 15th. $350 Guide Trips offered by Headhunters through the end of April. Discounted pricing on lodging too from Craig Trout Camp beginning @ $125.

All I can tell you is that Punxsutawney Phil always fishes with Headhunters Fly Shop & Guide Service.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 4.10.15

While we will be out swinging on the Hemingway Flat for the entire weekend with Whitney Gould and Mike McCune the rest of you will be enjoying the river as she shakes the winter sleep out from her eyes.

Yes, the Missouri River is acting like a spring time fishery.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 4.10.15

For those who are nymphing this weekend you should be aware that the fish have moved into the faster realm and are spreading out from their cold slow water haunts. There are still some fish living in that type of water but the wild ones have gone awry and are in some riffle type water. Summer time water? No. Not in seam lines, stuffed like a potato, no not really. But diamond chop in the deeper lanes will get some action for that new  SAGE Method your wife just gave you.

Flies? All the BWO stuff, all the pink stuff, all the firebead stuff, and all of the midge stuff. Why not tie on a big rubber legs in the middle region, a tiny CDC Bubbleback BWO in the lower and a Zebra on the upper. Top fly your choice.

Dry fly guys? Use the BWO patterns to your advantage. Clusters will work too. Find a tough one? Single midge patterns or downwing BWO  or Cripples will do the job.

Are the BWO’s really here? Have they truly arrived? No, not really. But they are willing to flirt with us on any given day from here on out through the middle of May.

Streamer fanatics are using the regular standard Missouri River fare. Flashy, small, black. Your choice. Swingers? They are in the shop upgrading their personal 2 handed line selection. We have all the tips you need too! Your 2 handed and Trout Spey Source in all of Montana is right here in Craig. Call us up if you need anything or have any questions. We have the knowledgeable staff on hand to answer your toughest of line questions.

The weather for the weekend is variable. Nice today, odd Saturday, and a touch of wind for Sunday. You gotta go so why not this weekend. $300 Guide Trips on our Spring Special continue through the end of the month.

Missouri River Montana flows are at 3900cfs and the water temps are north of 43F. She is turning on! Be polite to other anglers out there as the water level decreases the river shrinks. Be polite and do unto others as you…

Lodging available for those last minute planners. Call the shop for any of your Missouri River needs. We are open daily @ 8am and open late for those enjoying dinner at Izaak’s. Izaak’s open @ 3pm and serving a mean Jalapeno Pineapple Margarita along with great Brisket!

See you here in downtown Craig and on the river this weekend!

Headhunters Missouri River Fishing Report 4.2.15

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report reporting some of what happened this last week on the Mo from the Dam to at least Pelican Point. Some anglers below towards Cascade as well.

Lodging in Craig is booming and Izaak’s is open for the season! Izaak’s open daily @ 3pm for cocktails and dinner at 4pm. Stop in Craig for your full service experience. They will be closed Mondays through April but open the rest of the week. Joe’s is always open for your late night hang!

The fishing is getting better as the days pass by this spring. Consistent fishing is arriving as the the grass becomes greener. Nearly all businesses open in Craig. Almost. The Taco Cart not up to speed quite yet.

The weather sours starting today while the trout wear bigger smiles.

Headhunters Missouri River Fishing Report

Hot hatches on the horizon include our generally good spring baetis and the continuance of midge flies. Both will be gracing us with daily emergences this coming week. A few BWO’s out and about this last week. Meaning a few, like 3 seen recently. More to come soon. In conduction with the snow flurries panned for the week ahead? Maybe. You’ll just have to be here to witness it.

Bigger flies on the surface as well as our spring stones can be found under rocks too. Still a month out from the March Browns. Let’s play with the existing insects first.

Nymphers are out daily fishing all the way from the dam to ? How low can you go…

Streamer anglers stripping as well from top to bottom. Dry lines, intermediate tips, and some who like to go deeper yet. Hickman’s and Coffey’s and Kraft patterns are getting it done. Come by for the streamer super store in Craig. Open daily for your streamer fantasy at 8am.

Water temperatures continue their climb and stall occasionally. Like today, tomorrow.

Flows are in the lower 4K’s. Hiccuping this week is what we may see.

On the rise.
On the rise.

The weather will screw with us in the next few days. Check out the forecast and/or call us for the up to the minute fishing and weather reports.

I for one am packing a few Thermos’ products in my boat today along with hand warmers and a few pair of KAST gloves. W shave both the Raptor and Steelhead models for your spring fishing pleasure. Try the SIMMS ProDry as well. The HH staff love these as  well!

Lots of winter and early spring pieces in stock at Headhunters. We truly are your Missouri River Spring Specialists! While the rest are still ramping up we are in full spring swing. Stop in for a hot cup of Joe and fill your Thermos on us. See you before and after your wintery weather

a green cast

A Green Cast

There is a green cast upon the land.

One of the early signs of spring.

Blossoms a few trees as well.

There are a few indicators of spring that carry weight.

The spring green cast is indeed one.

When the Bluebirds arrive. When the Golden Eye finally head north. When the Robin shows its fat rusty belly. When the Osprey come home to Montana’s Missouri River.

Those are the true signs of spring for me.

It is coming now. Ol’ Man Winter is loosening his grasp.

The Missouri River has that spring-like green cast…

A sign of the season. A sign of today.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 3.5.15

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 3.5.15

Looks like it will be warming all weekend long and into the near future.

You coming?

The fishing is good and could be great this weekend. Our last FREE 2 Handed Casting Clinic will go off on Saturday. Really warm on Sunday and thru Tuesday.

Some lodging available too. Call and get yourself a warm bed next to Joe’s Bar. And the Mo’.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 3.5.15

The nymphing game is the winner if you want to use the net. Winter fare is the key. Use split shot if you wish. A big bomb fly if you don’t. Find stagnant water and fish it hard. Hit everything.

Some dry fly stuff in the normal winter dry fly spots. Creep around with your binoculars and seek out the randomly rising trout. Cast, drift, cast, drift. Repeat.

Streamers? Yes. Smaller and flashy. Or smaller and black.

2Handed? YEs. We got the shit. All the good shit for DEMO at the store in downtown Craig.

Spring Special begins on the 15th. Get in today.

Shop open daily @ 8am. Starting on Monday shop hours 8-6 daily. Unless it is shitty. Then we will go home at 5pm. Just sayin.’
