Saturday Zep Nobody’s Fault But Mine

Second reminder this young year to practice casting if you are a dry fly expert. Or wanna be DFO angler.

Casting accuracy is damn important if you like to put yourself in the right place, zone, state of mind.

If the trout does not see the fly, the trout does not eat the fly  –SOL Proverb

Today I thought that this tune could motivate us for the 2021 dry fly season. Or remind us that it is not anybody’s fault but yours, if you do not get bit. To me the pattern is a secondary issue. If the fly pattern is not presented perfectly, the fish will not eat it. EVER. Meaning the Mighty Mo. The perfect fly, that drags, even slightly, across the nose of your target, does not get bit.

So the fly is a secondary issue. Once again. The drift is king. And placement is secondary as well. Drift is the primary.

But today’s blog is about accuracy and placement. You can only  practice drift, on the water. The winter months do not give us as much opportunity to practice the crucial dry fly drift. I do understand practicing this crucial aspect, the most important component of the dry fly equation, can really only be done on the river. Or a stream with similar qualities of this river.

And that is why you should come twice this year. Or stay a week. Or both.

It is in fact the best time of year to practice that cast of yours. 25′-50′ casts catch a ton of fish on the Mo. That time is now. Most fly lines are designed to cast efficiently and accurately in this range. The Headhunter Fly Line, our proprietary dry fly specific line is made for exactly the distances mentioned above. 25′-50′ casts are the most common dry fly distances here on this famous dry fly tailwater.

Practice Casters are great for building the necessary skill set. They produce astonishingly similar feel and timing to the 30′ cast. Cast short, cast long, and do it inside your house! No need to stand int he driving snow. Nope.

Building muscle memory. Teaching your brain and arm and wrist and hand to cooperate. To communicate. You will not progress without this primary element of your casting game. Achieving that desirable muscle memory is so damn important in the game too. Your brain and body need to communicate to complete the repetitive electric transmission.

And it is Saturday. Go practice between NFL games. Because if you cannot get the fly to the right spot this dry fly season…you will sing out loud “Nobody’s Fault but Mine!”

Tuesday Fly Casting Tactics w/ Simon Gawesworth

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Tuesday Fly Casting Tactics w/ Simon Gawesworth

A great tip from Simon Gawesworth fo RIO Line Company today. Tuesday here in Craig and all is well.

The fly shop staff is out on the casting lane often fine tuning personal casting issues. Should they be out there more often? Well I won’t criticize here on this blog. What I do know is that you cannot fine tune all of the casting changes you personally need to make while fishing.

Casting issues, changing your cast, improving your overall effectiveness with a fly rod in hand takes time. That time is now. That time is not with fly rod in hand casting at difficult bank feeders. In July. No, that is not the time to learn, that is the time to execute.

So a heads up, as I always remind you this time of year, is to practice now. Make those changes now.

Changes take time. It does not happen rapidly. It happens over lots of casting sessions.

The key to success on any of these learning objectives is to do lots of mini sessions. Do not try to do hour long marathons. Nope. Short 5-10 minute sessions will allow you to advance quicker. Long overdrawn exhaustive learning sessions are not smart. Regression will happen!

Get your practice rod out and get going. January is the time to begin the improvements.

I practice with the fly line I will be using to take it to the next level when I get to the “Show!” So I use the Headhunter Fly Line during practice on the lawn, with hoops for targets, to gain accuracy. First cast is the best cast, and the winter months is when and where you develop those skills.

Headhunters Guides including me, Squeaky Oar Lock, are available for casting lessons any time of the year. Call the shop today and get your casting lessons set up this spring!

Be better in 2021!

Dead Flies Don’t Swim Video & 5 Things to Never Do Dry Fly Fishing

Dead Flies Don’t Swim Video & 5 Things to Never Do Dry Fly Fishing

Water levels falling this week we think. They fell yesterday by a couple thousand and will fall again today below 9K. Hooray.

The dry fly bite yesterday was damn good as well. More to come as we get into the true dry fly period with water levels appropriate for the season.

Today we show you again Dead Flies Don’t Swim. A classic HH vid by Scumliner Media that shows the joys of July.

Dead Flies Don’t Swim is also branded on our dry fly specific fly line. We believe in the slogan. Meaning? Dragging flies do not get eaten by our voracious trout. Perfect dead drifts get us through the day for sure.

5 Things to Never Do Dry Fly Fishing

  1. Drag your fly. Dead Flies Don’t Swim. Dead bugs do not move on the water. The primary diet of our trout here in Central Montana is dead flies. Spinners, cripples, scents.
  2. Think you are good enough to toss the first cast into the lane and hope. Dude. I don’t know any body that good. Prep for a couple minutes and make the appropriate drift before you alert the enemy you are in the neighborhood. All men over 50 do this. Almost all. I’ve had a couple in the boat that don’t. Maybe a few. But not a lot. Fellers do this everyday. It’s bad. Catch more fish and practice a bit outside of the trout.
  3. Make your goal to catch the trout. Don’t foul it up early in the game. Make a plan. Execute. No plan?No fish. Guessing again? If you are a guesser, and I think you may be, then your goal is not to catch that trout. You can see everything. The fish rising, the fly floating not dragging, the fly. All the variables are in front of you. You can see them all. No secrets. No guessing. DOn’t guess your fly over there.
  4. Shoot line on rising trout. Most dry fly ops are within 30′. Some 25′. You do not have to shoot line 30′. Nope. Cast it with accuracy. Don’t shoot line at a 30′ target. You are guessing every cast. And that is bad.
  5. Get too close to another angler while dry fly fishing. Lots of water out there. Respect others water. BE smart. Don’t be that guy. You know. That guy the dick.

The Headhunter Fly Line

It’s Dry Fly Season! The Headhunter Fly Line

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

The Headhunter Fly Line

Today speaking about the Headhunter Fly Line. A dry fly line designed by Headhunters manufactured by RIO for our dry fly obsessions!

It is finally dry fly season here on Montana’s Missouri River. And no better time to get your Headhunter Fly Line on that dry fly rod of yours.

For sale for nearly a year we could not be happier with the success of our first foray into line design. A proprietary line design and dry fly line like no other on the market.

Introducing the Headhunter Fly Line
Available at Headhunters of Craig or online

After years of trying every fly line on the market – and never finding exactly what we wanted – we decided to design our own line, specifically for technical dry fly fishing on the Missouri River.

The Headhunter Fly Line is designed for the medium to long casts we perform every day. Casts that require pinpoint accuracy, long-leader turnover, delicate presentation, yet the power to defeat the ever present Montana wind.

Introducing the Headhunter Fly Line
Dead Flies Don’t Swim!

We also created a stealthy sky colored line with a zone that helps anglers understand how much line to have off the rod tip to maximize false casting and line pick-up. Mission accomplished. And it turns out it’s a pretty darn great line for swinging soft-hackles, presenting short-leash nymph rigs, and general attractor dry fly fishing.

Designed for Headhunters, by Headhunters

A 21.5′ front taper with a 5′ mid section followed by a 24.5 rear taper. A Double Delta Taper, and industry first, that will bring a new level of efficiency to your dry fly game.

The Performance Zone really works well. Easy line pick-up at the 25′ mark. Just strip in line until the Lime Green portion enters the rod tip and cast. The Performance Zone is 15′ in length. You can pick up the line easily from the water anywhere with in the Lime portion. And the color change is easily seen in the air too. Meaning you can use it to your advantage while false casting. The Headhunter Line is designed to cast the best within this zone. For the 25′-60′ dry fly casts we so commonly encounter.

Introducing the Headhunter Fly Line
The Lime Green section is The Performance Zone.

We have had the Headhunter Fly Line on the water for nearly a year. The verdict in in. Dry Fly Anglers love it. More flies in front of trout. More fish to hand. More smiles!  Lots of anglers have not only bought one, but two outfitting their 4, 5 and/or 6 weight. Available in line weights 4, 5 and 6.

Find yourself fishing the Delaware River, the Missouri River, The Henry’s Fork, Silver Creek, any spring creeks around America and Europe? Then you may enjoy the Headhunter Fly Line. Made for conditions that exist on all of the above resources and beyond!

Soft Hackling on your schedule this fall? Get yourself the Headhunter for that single hand swing rod of yours.

Check out the new Headhunter Fly Line in Downtown Craig Montana from the Missouri River Fly Labs of Headhunters Fly Shop. We have demo’s as well if you wanna go that route. Come by anyway or give us a call.

$80! Available in 4, 5, and 6 weights. Watch the video, check it out, and order one up for yourself!

Headhunter Fly Line Review

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Headhunter Fly Line Review

A look at the Headhunter Fly line today on the Headhunters Fly Shop Blog. Yes, a Headhunter Fly Line Review from the Headhunters of Craig.

Un-biased? Nope.

Honest? Yep.

We released this line July 4th this last summer. Sold a ton of them. Well received by almost all that had purchased it. I think we had one returned as it did not fit the customers casting stroke.

Everything here at Headhunters leaves with a Satisfaction Guarantee. If the product falls to impress you,  it does not fit your needs as you had hoped, or you simply don’t like it…you can return it here at Headhunters for cash, trade, or otherwise.

Our Headhunter Fly Line Review

Yes, we are biased. The Headhunter Fly Line designed for a specific use here on this river and beyond intended for technical dry fly applications. A line made for pinpoint  delivery of 30′-60′ casts, sometimes in the wind. Sound familiar?

It should.

If you have ever fished Montana, the Mo, or any other larger famous Dry Fly River like the Delaware, Henry’s Fork, Silver Creek, and beyond. Large waters requiring longer accurate casts targeting rising trout. As simple as that.

Reach cast
Long Reach Mends easily executed with the Headhunter Fly Line

We had always thought while many fly lines, or generic fly lines like the Gold and Grande are both longstanding producers and sellers, but are they exactly what we need to tackle the often difficult tailwater-esque dry fly equations.

Fly line makers manufacture lines for nymphing, for streamer fishing,, and for all around fly fishing applications but does anybody actually make a fly line dedicated to dry fly fishing?

Hmmm. Yeah, we said it too.

And so we did something to address the issue! We made a fly line for you, for us, for the dry fly fanatic.

Here is what we have found about the Headhunter Fly Line

After the testing period in which we tested 8 versions of this line, the introduction in July, and the summer that followed we have come to some conclusions that we would love to share with you. The Headhunter Line has been in the trenches now and we feel we have enough casting and fishing miles on it to accurately and intelligently let you in on what we have experienced.

The Headhunter Fly Line does not excel at tossing oversized hopper or Salmonfly patterns. Although it does well with flies in the size 8 range, on the 6 weight.

It does not and is not intended to toss heavily weighted streamers. It is not designed for heavy nymph fishing with split shot and bobbers. The Headhunter Fly Line is a dry fly specific fly line.

It does do well with a short leash indi-rig and is pretty good at swinging soft hackles. Both of which are unintended surprises.

Through a summer of use we recognized that it is not a good match for beginner and some intermediate casters. If you are not comfortable casting with at least 20′ of fly line off of, hanging from the tip, this line is not designed for your current skill set.

Introducing the Headhunter Fly Line
Available at Headhunters of Craig or online

Those who truly love the Headhunter Fly Line are those who possess upper level intermediate and advanced casting skill set. It is a dry fly line made for dry fly anglers. For Headhunters, by Headhunters.

The Headhunter Fly Line fishes exactly how we expected it too. It delivers the fly with precision to the target at Missouri River distances.

You can achieve high line speed with this line. It matches well with medium fast action dry fly rods such at the new Sage LL. Mark likes it with his Sage X too. The Asquith, the new NRX+ LP, and the IMX Pro, and John has it lined up on both his Orvis Helios 3F and 3D.

This fly line is made for dry fly fishing. The Headhunter is designed for fishing tiny flies towards sipping trout. It is a dry fly line. The Headhunter Fly Line thrives with long leaders tippeted out with several feet of 5X or 6X.

The line carries enough energy to turn over those longer leaders we love to throw here on the Mo. If you commonly face difficult dry fly scenarios this line excels in those situations.

The Headhunter Fly Line Design

This line is designed for casting at rising trout. Either from a boat or wade fishing, standing in the water. The Headhunter Fly Line is made for this.

This is a two color fly line. Why? For very specific reasons. The front 25′ is colored Big Sky Camo for stealth like fly entry. At 25′ the line color changes to Lime Green. This is the Performance Zone. Pick up the fly line easily anywhere in this 15′ long Performance Zone. At 40′ the line changes back to Big Sky Camo. An easy to understand color change eliminates the confusion about line colors.

The Headhunter Fly Line has that amazing 15′ sweet spot. The line really casts easily, with increasing line speed, enabling slack line presentations with pin-point accuracy.

Some also use the line color changes to measure distances to fish when understanding all of the situational variables are important path to success.

The Headhunter Fly Line is a Double Triangle Taper with a 51′ head. Our advanced 21.5′ triangle taper in the front enables energy to tackle windy conditions while the 24.5′ rear taper encourages accuracy at length.

The Headhunter is looped at both ends, uses the line technologies from RIO including super slick Agent X coating, ultra low stretch core, Hi-Float Tip, and Line ID in 4 places including line weight and states Dead Flies Don’t Swim.

Dead Flies Don’t Swim

I have truly enjoyed casting this line at longer distances coupled with the ubiquitous reach end. 30′ is a very common distance. 45′ and longer do occur and this is a line that can rise to the more difficult dry fly problems.

The Headhunter Fly Line is available in line weights 4, 5, and 6.

We really have been enjoying the Headhunter Fly Line. It performs precisely how we planned and expected. Rarely does that happen. RIO helped along the way with design modifications and the manufacture of the Headhunter Line.
