Headhunters Thanksgiving Missouri River Fishing Report

Two words. Damn good.

The best late fall bite we have witnessed in several years.

Dry fly? Good for the last couple hours. Not too good before that period. But really quite good after the sun comes off of the water. One of these days we will not see the sun. Yesterday we did not see it for long. Quite nice. The fish appreciated it as well.

The nymphing and the streamer fishing pretty damn good. The last couple hours of the day are the key for the streamer bite as well. Or find the shadows and focus on that kind of water.

Sows and scuds and worms and mayfly nymphs. The hot ones below!

  • Little Green Machine Chartreuse
  • Tungsten Psycho May BWO
  • Zebra
  • Tailwater Sow
  • S & M
  • SJW/Mexican Mayfly
  • Pheasant Tail Slim
  • Rainbow Czech
  • Ninch’sBubble Yum
  • Caviar Scud
  • Soft Hackle Sow

For the streamer junkies today we suggest…

  • Thin Mint
  • Bloom’s RT Minnow
  • Foxy Clouser Minnow
  • Copper and Gold Kreelex
  • Black Wooly Bugger
  • Clouser Minnow Sculpin
  • Sculpzilla
  • Zonkers
  • Pig Pen Leech
  • Ninch’s Water Gremlin
  • Kraft’s CK Baitfish Minnow

Black has been pretty consistent. Have not had to change as of late.

The soft hackle gang, mostly over 45, have been out there getting it done. Again late in the day has been the hot ticket. Or in the shade. Find it. Swing it.

flyshopsmallThe rod that the 2 handed gang soft hackle swinging contingent has been hopped up on is the Sage 2109 ONE. This 10’9″ rod, while a niche crowd, is super fin to throw a light Scandi line in conjunction with a  couple soft hackle bugs. Try the 180gr or the 210gr RIO Scandi Line on it. Or come in and take it out for a spin. The Craig Flat below town is perfect testing ground! Trout Spey demo’s coming out of our ears here at Headhunters. The Missouri River authority in all things two handed. Stop in and we can answer any questions you may have.

We have all kinds of trout weights in stock from 2 weight, 3 weights, and some killer price point rods from Echo and Orvis. Our best sellers for sure. Glass rods are hip too. Echo makes a fantastic glass two hander in several wights and lengths.

The December 3 & 4 Trout Spey clinics are nearly full. One opening on the 4th. Look to Headhunters as your education center here in Craig.

Open Thanksgiving from 8 til noon-ish. Then off to complete a few shuttles. Then home to family.

Tomorrow is a Shopping Holiday. Keep in mind we are open 8-6 this entire weekend. Daily here in Craig all winter long.

Fly Shop Small this Saturday. Black Friday tomorrow. Come in and make some deals!

Headhunters Thanksgiving Missouri River Fishing Report is over. Go eat, watch football, nap. Repeat.
