Two-handed Trout Season

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We’ve started Two-handed Trout season a little earlier than normal this year. Actually, some of are swinging every month of the year, but Late October to late December are what we consider “prime time”. The fishing is pretty good right now. The fish are big and we’ve had a half dozen guided trips out this … Read more

Trout Spey Outlook

We’re still in Trout Spey season on the Missouri, and the swing bite remains good. As the weather and river slowly warm, the fish continue to get more active. The Rainbow trout are spawning right now in good numbers. It’s pretty easy to spot reds in and around faster 2-3 foot deep water. A sure … Read more

Two-hander Report

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Darn good swing fishing for early March on the Missouri, and more than a few spey anglers out searching. At least when the weather is nice. The Dungeon Keeper

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Kelly Galloup’s Sex Dungeon is without a doubt one of the most popular large tandem streamer patterns in the West (World?). The articulated movement, swimmy materials, and large deer hare head that pushes water making noise is a great combination. It’s an expensive fly – lots of materials and complicated – but we sell lots … Read more

Montana Spey Report

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Still swinging here on the Missouri River, but those water temperatures have dropped and the fish have really tanked up in those winter lies. Friday Fly Tying Just Add Vise

The Mozuri Minnow from the vise of John Arnold. John patterned this streamer pattern from the Yozuri Minnow fished on light tackle when living in the Florida Keys. Originally tied with Walleye in mind it soon proved to catch plenty of those silly Mozuri River rainbows too!

Now a daily player and certainly an all-star in the winter months here and everywhere.

Friday Fly Tying Just Add Vise Tie this up and fish it on your streamer rod, your swing rod, and have a couple back-ups in your box!

Enjoy the video, order up Mozuri Minnow Just Add Vise Kit, and add a couple more too! Winter starts after the holidays…

Strong Trout Spey – Finally

So we’ve now had a week straight of solid swing fishing And the river seems to have stabilized.  It’s still high for this time of year at 4600cfs, but it has stayed there for the last several days. Water temps are hovering around 36°. Sounds cold, but the trout seem too like it a lot. … Read more

Trout Spey Report

The swing-bite has been inconsistent this fall. I blame it on inconsistent weather and inconsistent flows from Holter Dam. Mother Nature dictates the weather, and continuing construction on the spillway at Holter Dam Is affecting the flows. The flows have been erratic, and so has the fishing. There have been a few great days, some … Read more

Montana Trout Spey Video Scumliner Media

New, no. Cool, yes.

I have watched this a ton of times. And I’m gonna watch it many more today.

I love watching good casters. It never gets old. Mental training is important in the learning process.

Lots of folks do not know what kind of learner they are. See’r, do’er, feeler, understander. I’m a Understander 1st, and a see’r 2nd. So watching Mike make those fundamental casts gets me further down the road.

Then I can go out and try to replicate the simplicity of his stroke.

And, sometimes it works. Getting on the water with a rod in your hand for countless hours is how you move forward. Very difficult to assume Rock Star status with out standing knee deep in a run for countless, hours.

Enjoy the video. One of my favorites. Tuesday today. Thursday begins the Trout Spey Camp. Looking forward to a weekend of two handed fun![/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/129327269″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

A quick video today on this Sunday previous to our big Trout Spey Camp beginning this Thursday.

The bite is improving. The water levels have dropped a bit. The water temps continue to decrease. The leaves are falling after the snow and sold snap this past weekend. We are having a ball on the Mo.

Look us up if you are heading out in the next two months. We love October and November. Great streamer and swing months. Great dry fly and nymph months. Great months!

Single Handed Spey Video w/ Simon Gawesworth of RIO

Today on the Headhunters Fly Shop Blog we bring you this fantastic video with Spey Casting Guru Simon Gawesworth of RIO Products.

We get lots of questions about this newer style of single handed casting and Simon will break down a few myths and confusion points in this informational and educational video.

Really worth watching. A couple of fellers from Spokane empty the single handed spey cast on the St. Joe in Idaho. We see a few using it here as well. Mark has been sneaking around with his for the past year. IT comes out more and more in specific situations. Swinging soft hackles, small leeches, or even overhanding long distances just for fun!

Enjoy this flick from RIO today on the Headhunters Blog. Headhunters of Craig is Your Trout Spey Shop!

How to Tie a Soft Hackle with Hans

Today a soft hackle video with Hans S of the South Dakota Angler. We used to post a quite a few vids from Hans. A good tier. If you are in the SD region look up the SD Angler for all your fly fishing needs!

We use these a bunch in the fall. Alos during the spring session you could tie a Midge Soft Hackle, a BWO softie, and any generic mayfly or caddis soft hackles for swinging or nymphing success here fishing the Missouri River.

Perfect for the trout spey or single handed spey gang. Enjoy your Thursday.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4ZyRn3X5RI” video_title=”1″][/vc_column][/vc_row]
