Saturday Scenery

Today you are either watching college football or fishing somewhere or spending the holiday weekend with family and friends. It’s the last weekend of the summer, so you’re not likely laying on the couch checking out the Headhunters blog. For the few that are, here’s a picture of the Craig bridge at sunrise in August. … Read more

Sunday Scenery

or is it supposed to be a Saturday? I can never remember. Mark is basking in the glorious SoCal sun this week, so here’s my ode to a Springtime Swing. Jim Chalmers getting it done on the lower river.

Silly Sunday Scenery?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Mark and Danielle are in Hawaii checking out the BBQ situation, so it’s up to me to bring you “Silly Sunday Scenery”. Or was it supposed to be “Silly Saturday Scenery”? And come to think of it, “Friday Foto” kind of rings a bell…

While I’m unsure which day is dedicated to landscape photography, I’m certain that I’m too lazy to go backwards through the blog posts to find the answer. So here is a beautiful shot from the top of Dearborn Rock. As you can see, the weather was fantastic yesterday, and more of the same is in the forecast. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Saturday Swing Scenery

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Out doing a little spey fishing with Missouri River first-timers Greg and Sam yesterday. The swung fly was not incredibly productive, but we did manage to score a few times. Thats Greg landing a nice Brown above. These guys are all about the two-hander, and pushed it into the wind all day on the lower river. Fishing reports are varied right now, with most guides calling it “good enough but not great”. Plenty of smaller rainbows especially in the Canyon and below. Some nice Brown Trout around with that springtime aqua sheen on the gill plate.

Enjoy the weekend wherever you’re playing. If you’re in Craig, Izaaks opened last night, and the ribs looked great as usual.[/vc_column_text][us_image image=”26571″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Sunday Scenery

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]A packed house yesterday as the weather topped 70° in downtown Craiglandia for the first time this year. Seems early to me, but most folks don’t mind shorts-and-flip-flop weather in mid-March. The parking lots were full and the Headhunters Crew spent most of the day shuttling rigs between the Dam and Prewitt Creek. A giant herd of sheep headed up to the dam and the more adventurous souls headed into the Cañon.

Fishing reports were OK at best, and pretty rough at worst. Down was better than up. Not sure if it’s the how the what or the where? Wading anglers seemed to do much better as well.

I don’t expect it to be as crowded Sunday, and things will hopefully be a bit cooler and cloudier. And not so windy. But I wouldn’t bet on the latter.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Saturday Spey

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Some of us are at the ski hill, others are swinging softly. The snow in Craig was obliterated by the weather the last few days. Great fishing conditions. We hope you’re out swinging one up, and the reports we heard yesterday were all real good. Enjoy this monochrome shot of Ninch as you rig up a head and tips for a day on the Mo’. Jimmy is ready to do shuttles and the boat ramps should be accessible by tomorrow![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Silly Saturday Scenery

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Would you stick your tongue to the Wolf Creek Bridge this morning? You do that while we drift a nymph rig through the slot. A super sensitive balloon 5 feet above a B shot, followed by something pink followed by something pink. Make sure and lead your rig in that fridgid, slow water. Might be able to swing one out of there if you have your two-hander in the rig. For sure if you have a small black leech tied on. Hopefully there’s a Thermos of coffee in your rig as well. Or some Redbreast. Looks like some precipitation over the weekend, but temperatures in the fishable range. And one last game this weekend if it’s too cold to hit the river.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Sunday Scenery

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]A calm sunset at the Wolf Creek FAS. Those aren’t clouds, but smoke from the Roaring Lion Fire at Hamilton, Montana. We’ve had very little smoke in our area from that or other fires in the region.

All quiet on the Mo’ this week. Weekends are seeing an incredible amount of recreational traffic and a wide variety of “pool toys” on the river. This week should be calm with some fishy, cloudy weather in the forecast.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Friday Foto Hiking with Jim

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Shop regular Jim Brandley and I spent a day hiking a small stream up near Glacier NP last month. Here’s a few shots of our day. Incredible scenery. Pretty good fishing. Great hike. No bears.

Enjoy the weekend. A few fishermen around, mostly the hardcore type. A few out of state guides taking a late summer vacation to somewhere new. It’s always fun to share and compare the differences between the Missouri and other rivers.

Plenty of splash & giggle floaters on warm afternoon weekends this time of year.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][us_image image=”19591″ onclick=”lightbox”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Friday Foto – Storm Season

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Our weekly image shows this wicked Thunderstorm that whacked the river last night around 8pm. This shot is taken near Cascade with the Adel Mountains in the background. Plenty of lightning associated with this cell. Finally. I love storms and they usually signal a day of good dry fly fishing.

Make sure and bring your rain jacket and pants this time of year. You never know where or when these can pop-up.

If you can tell you’re going to be in the lightning, my personal recommendation is to get out of the boat in a low spot with no big trees, and spread out! If you all sit together, you all may get it.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Freezout Lake Snow Goose Migration

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Freezout Lake Snow Goose migration occurs each spring, and is a very popular event for nature lovers in the Great Falls area. Julie and I have logged many days at Freezout – but in the fall and with guns. Never in the spring with cameras and binoculars. We decided to spend a morning checking it out last weekend with our daughter Adair. The weather was beautiful and it was a packed house. This event attracts birders and waterfowl photographers from all over the west (World?).

Adair didn’t really get it as we hiked the levies and saw some birds. We really didn’t see that many ducks and geese considering Frezzout’s fame for waterfowl production, though there are several thousand swans around. We had just about given up when we saw a large number of cars parked on the lower lake so we decided to give it a look. It didn’t take 10 minutes for a group of geese the size of a medium sized city to descend onto the lake. Then she got it.

If you’re into this sort of thing, you might check it out. It only last a couple of weeks before the Snow’s continue their journey north. if you’re in the area, head north out of Great Falls on I-15 to Vaughn, then follow the signs to Choteau/Glacier Park. Right after the town of Fairfield, you’ll run right through the middle of the Freezout Lake area. If the birds are around there will be cars up and down the shoulder of the highway.

You can drive to plenty of the viewing spots, and there is a system of levies and roads throughout the Wildlife Refuge. Some of these roads are open, but many are closed except for foot traffic. Very easy walking if you want to get a little exercise while you’re there.

Bring binoculars for sure. If you want to bring camera gear you’ll want a lens of at least 300mm equivalent. You’ll see more pro’s here with $10K telephoto lenses than anywhere outside of an NFL stadium. My 70-200 was definitely not enough on my full frame camera, though it was close on Adair’s inexpensive crop-sensor camera.[/vc_column_text][us_grid columns=”3″ post_type=”attachment” items_quantity=”” images=”18206,18207,18213,18212,18211,18210,18209″ orderby=”post__in” items_gap=”” items_layout=”gallery_default” img_size=”us_600_600_crop” overriding_link=”popup_post_image” breakpoint_1_cols=”3″ breakpoint_2_width=”768px” breakpoint_3_width=”480px” breakpoint_2_cols=”3″ breakpoint_3_cols=”2″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Silly Sunday Scenery

Silly Sunday Scenery

Headhunters Guide Max Mattioli rocking the upper river with a guest Saturday. Sun and some wind and some trout.

The week ahead looks like unseasonably warm weather again. Light winds too. Come out and fish. If you wish!

February is on deck. Look for a February Forecast on the way. More spey reports. More fishing reports. More summer 2016 updates. More fantastic daily rambling bullshit coming at you from downtown Craig Montana.

The epicenter of Missouri River fly fishing.

Friday Foto December Snow Edition

Friday Foto December Snow Edition

All is well here fishing Montana’s Missouri River.

Friday Foto today here on the Headhunters Fly Shop Blog.

Trout Spey Casting Clinic led by John tomorrow. SOLD OUT. The next one coming in January.

The snow pretty much melted yesterday with the roads all but bare and dry. Even the secondary dirt roads have thawed. The boat ramps should be all good too.

Looks like a nice weekend ahead of us. If the damn wind stays to a digestible level. Super windy Thursday. Not enough to keep anglers off of the water though. The SW wind leaves ample shores in the lee available for fishing.

See you for a coffee break at the shop this weekend. Open at 8am daily.

Happy Thanksgiving from Sub-Zero Craig Montana

Friday Foto w/ short fishing report.

Friday Foto with the Forest Anderson Craig Bridge today.

Damn cold the last couple days with snow coverage statewide.

Warming to day with anglers bound to be on the water. Gotta get rid of some of that Turkey Fat.

Swingers Unite. There will be some swinging going on for sure. Stop in for a chat about the 2 hander if you wish. Try something new this weekend. It is what the Pilgrims would have done.

Nymphers are looking toward the softer water arena’s for their subsurface success. Scuds, sows, pink flavors of LB’s, shrimps, Amex’s, and such. Some action from the mayfly side of life for a short time longer.

Stippers are getting cold hands. The water temps are such that lots of splashing, sliding water up the line can freeze quickly making your guides oversized and not too slippery.

Swingers are getting cold feet. Water temps are such that an hour in the water can make a fella want to take a stroll up and down the bank. 44F and falling daily.

Dry fly fellers are tying flies at home. Although apish or two could be up anywhere. Those in the know are in the know?

The weather coming up for the weekend is not terrible. Hi’s in the upper 20’s. But the sun can make all the difference. Makes it feel 10 degrees warmer. Or more? Coffee helps that feeling. At least for awhile. Joe’s Bar open @ 8am.

Shop open at 8am. Black Friday. Stop in for deals, sales, and all things killer int eh trout fishing realm.

Shop Small Saturday tomorrow. Shop locally and show your support.

Silly Sunday Scenery

Howling again on Saturday! Blowing pretty hard. Overcast in the afternoon may have made the bite heat up.

Certainly a better post lunch byte than during the morning session.

Those trout out there look real, real, healthy. Big dogs.

Get in on some of the fatty bows on the Mo this coming week. A good mix of anglers here this weekend from Boise, C’DA, Bozeman, Calgary, Helena, Great Falls, and who could forget Havre.

Experiencing the trout dream daily here in central Montana.

The landscape is nearly all brown and tan ad shades thereof. Hence the B & W image today. Really the only color in our personal landscape is the Rainbow Trout.

That in itself will get us through the winter.

Tying Knots – Friday Photo Essay

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Going through the last 12+months photos recently and realized something. I have a lot of pictures of my friends tying knots. Lots. You’re probably asking yourself, “why in the hell would you take a picture of someone tying a knot? Why not casting, or a grip ‘n grin, or someone drinking a beer?”[/vc_column_text][us_image image=”15316″ onclick=”lightbox”][vc_column_text]That’s what I was thinking too. But then I realized there are a couple reasons I have a lot of knot-tying images:

  1. I like the act of rigging up. Getting ready. Watching someone standing by themselves in a river. Choosing the right fly. Making sure that knot won’t fail. Probably the most focused an angler is over the course of the day. Certainly the quietest.
  2. We must spend a hell of a lot of time tying knots!

I remember my high school football coach telling our team that during the course of an average football game, players actually “played” for 6 minutes (I think he was pointing out how out of shape we were). In todays passing oriented game, I’ve read it’s more like 11 minutes. 13 if Russell Wilson is scrambling around.

It made me wonder how many minutes of our day we spend tying knots. For guides, it’s every single minute you’re not rowing or netting a fish. So lots.

But for the rest of you, I wonder. 1 hour? More?

So, here is – without a doubt – the best knot tying photo essay you’re likely to see this week, featuring my very favorite knot tying images. Some great anglers as well…[/vc_column_text][us_grid columns=”4″ post_type=”attachment” items_quantity=”” images=”15321,15320,15319,15322,15323,15324,15325,15326,15333,15328,15329,15330,15327,15331,15332,15334″ orderby=”post__in” items_gap=”4px” items_layout=”gallery_default” img_size=”us_600_600_crop” overriding_link=”popup_post_image” breakpoint_1_cols=”4″ breakpoint_2_width=”768px” breakpoint_3_width=”480px” breakpoint_2_cols=”4″ breakpoint_3_cols=”2″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Missouri River Fall Friday Foto

Missouri River Fall Friday Foto.

A drifter of sorts.

Quiet river again Thursday. Today?

Fishing is pretty good. Not on fire by any means.

Better streamer reports coming in daily. The subsurface strippers are having success. Swingers too. Smaller unweighted patterns are getting bit. A dry line or an intermediate tip will suffice.

Not many bugs to be found. Not enough. A slow BWO season for sure.

A good weekend to fish. We have lodging and guides available. Shuttles for sure. Handwarmers, rental boats, and all the winter gear for those who like to stay warm.

November 1st. A good month.

Nobody around. Rising fish.

Craig Ghost Town.

Just drift boats and out of work guides.

Perfect.

Above is Darcy Richardson of Fernie B.C. He and his brother Darren see us annually after Darcy has finished his guide season on the Elk River. Darren said they will be coming at least another 10 years for fantastic late October fly flicking. Dry fly and short leash will fill the day. At it does. Streamer fishing if you like.

They both loved the Sage ONE Trout Spey 2wt for soft hackled flies.

Now they have headed back north to the snows of Canada. No snow here. Shortly? Maybe.

See you wandering the back alleys of Craig.

Or on a lonely dry fly flat.

Kick ass fat trout.

Missouri River Week in Review: Images

Silly Sunday Scenery

Windy this morning here on the Missouri.

Then high sun has kept some of the anglers at bay. Been pretty quiet on the river.

Still some late season holdout Trico’s around and giving some fisher dudes dry fly opportunities.

Enjoy the Silly Sunday Scenery today and let’s hope we get some overcast rainy weather this coming week! But it looks like sunny skies along with wind for the week.

Stop in and see our large selection of wind resistant clothing…

More Creepy Night Photos

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Friday Foto’s this week include more creepy night photos. Who does this? More people than you think. I actually got busted on a couple of spots around Craig the other night. Just like fishing. They beat me to the spot.

(above image: Cascade Boat Ramp)

Speaking of fishing, there is a lot of surface activity in the wee hours right now. Lots. Might be worth a shot, and if the Aurora Borealis continues to glow, you won’t even need a headlamp. Chug a mouse? Skate a big Caddis? Black streamer? Yes.

HOW & WHEN TO SEE IT

I get questioned almost every day about finding out when the Aurora is going to be visible in North Central Montana. Not really by people hoping to capture images, but just by folks who’ve never seen it. Check out Soft Serve News to find out the current activity and “Storm” warnings. If you’re a Facebook afficianado, it’s probably easier to follow them and you’ll see the warnings on your FB feed. I also check out Spaceweather.com, which has lots of cool scientific stuff as well.

New Breed Chicks Rule

New Breed Chicks Rule

Alex on the Mighty Mo this last week.

She and her husband popped up from Billings for a touch of fly fishing on the Missouri.

The Bighorn used to be their favorite river. No longer. They we quite pleased with the the fight on our feisty Rainbow Trout.

We love them too Alex. They are planning a move to Missoula soon and will be a couple hours closer. Hooray!

I have a feeling we will be seeing more of these two in the future.

Look us up for anything you may need Alex. Even the two handed classes offered in the winter months.

They said they would be attending…for sure.

Silly Sunday Scenery Brown Trout Edition #47

Brown Trout on the dry fly.

The big fly.

Looking like a July week ahead. A 2015 July week with unsettled weather. Looking like a high on Monday of 52F. A typical non-typical year.

The cooler weather should keep some of the pressure from the bikini clad gang…not that there is anything wrong with that. We like everybody. Remember that it is all about intention.

Out early to beat the rest of the troops. Can work.

The upper river fish are getting nearly impossible to catch on a dry. Specifically if you don’t commit to drag free drifts. Headhunters that continually slide the fly over the head of the target may be disappointed. Not for the weak at heart. For the strong, try the reach cast. When you hear folks at the bar stating that the reach or some sort of slack line presentation is imperative for success, they are not lying.

Late July fish and early June fish are two completely different creatures.

Totally different. Opposite ends of the spectrum.

Back to your weekend. We are open early in Craig. Coffee is generally ready at 6am for your eye opener. Joe’s open at 8am. Izaak’s at 4pm for your dining needs. Check out Craiglodging.com for any accommodations. Big SALE Rack developing outside the front door.

Trico’s all over, up and down. Some days more than others. Attractors working well. Caddis hit an miss. PMD’s all but gone. Nymphing report? Good on the insides and weed-lee’s. Come on by for any fly help or suggestions. We love to talk about the Missouri!

Stupor busy up top near the Dam. If you like a quieter experience, go elsewhere. Less stuffed elsewhere.

Come by and check out the NRS Freestone Inflatable Driftboat with a new drain system. Just awesome.

Adipose Drifters available every day for rent too. We have waders for rent as well as fly rods, reels, demo fly lines, trout spey rods, anchors, shuttles, free river maps, and a Coke machine that mostly works…

See you this week ahead.

July Craig Montana Sunday Morning Images and Micro Fishing Report

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Top notch morning in Craig.

July 19th.

Sunny and warm. The water had cooled to 60 two nights in a row and now hovers at 64F.

Love my Corolla!
Love my Corolla!

Tough fishing conditions for those who do not carry a fly rod in the back seat of their Corolla.

If you can get it done, it becomes easier.

Casting and dead drifting is vital to your success on the dry fly.

The fish are spooky and that initial contact with the trout should not include unpreparedness.

It should include having the right amount of line out before you present so you do not show the fish your fly in a bad light first off.

Those anglers who love finicky, tough, selective, difficult, time consuming, Henry’s Fork-esque type trout…you fellers love this time period on the Mo. It does box out some anglers from those locales.

Crowds are waning as we move into the latter parts of July.

August is on the horizon and we enjoy the cooler temps in August. July is the warmest month, usually, and cooling water temps generally accompany the change of month.

Well, we hope it is coming soon.

Or if it does not come for some time, we will eagerly waiting your arrival.

Whenever your time comes we will welcome you.

Make your own bit of fly fishing history this summer on the dry fly capitol of the west.

It is still raining at the time of this post. Good news. The historically wet May may lead into the historically wet June. May brings 2.4″ and June brings more. We exceeded the May norms and will we create more mountain greenery this June?

We hope so!

A couple storms dumped about a 1/2″ of water over our region. Bring it!

Canyon Ferry level is now 89.4%. It’s coming…that is good.

Happy Friday to all those in Troutlandia from all of us in Craiglandia.

Looks like overcast skies for the weekend. You like dry fly action? We do.

The wind-devil has been staying away for most of the week…he delivered some pretty hefty winds last weekend. So we should have some solace from the wind?

Who knows.

We do know that Izaak’s is open and the river is fishing well. Joe’s Bar you ask? Yep, open!

Most of the businesses in Craig are open save for the Taco Truck, but they too may be open soon. Izaak’s at 3pm and serving dinner. Izaak’s will be closed Monday nights for the month of April. Head on up to the Frenchman for dinner if you need a bite.

Shop open at 8am and open late til 7pm for all your Mo River trout fishing needs! We have lodging avail for this weekend too. Give us a call and hop in one of our discounted guide boats for $300!

Tomorrow is our 8th birthday here at Headhunters. How should we celebrate?
