New Breed Chicks Rule with 3 Generations

3 generations of gals here on the Mo this winter.

Andy, Danielle, and Hannah fished in the damn cold weather a couple days after Thanksgiving. An afternoon fish session with boat heaters, hand warmers, warm hats, and hot soup. And a few fish to hand. Just awesome.

Snowing hard again today here on the river. The roads and boat ramps are dicey. Not great travel conditions. But hardy Montanans are used to hardships. We certainly live here for the river and take the added discomforts in stride.

Planning on coming out this weekend? We believe any temps aver 25F are not too uncomfortable for fishing. Below that temperature you can certainly be on the cool side. Ice in your guides is a problem.

New Breed Chicks Rule with 3 Generations

A couple inches have already fallen this morning. Really feels like more will fall today. Quiet on the river today. Really calm too. No wind to fouls things up. At least here in Craig.

Be sure to read the excellent 2015-16  Spey Rod Lineup & review yesterday on this very blog. And remember that we have all kinds of demo rods at the shop and ready to fish anytime. Even in the snow.

I love fishing in the snow. It is so quiet. Just you, the spey cast, the silent sound of falling snow, and an occasional tug!

Heidi Potter with this nice Rainbow caught on a dry-dropper fishing the Cascade reach.

She has graced these blog pages before.

The Potter family comes out once and twice a year to the Mo from C’Da Idaho.

Fun times with them always and they are not afraid of a good time!

Thanks Potter family and we are already looking for your next visit in 2016.

New Breed Chicks Rule Julie Edition

New Breed Chicks Rule Julie Edition

My college roommate’s wife Julie with this Brown Trout on a hopper.

I have to take Mark and his wife Julie, his name also Mark, fishing for free because of the pain I put him through in college. Just ask him.

Super nice folks living in Bellingham WA. Julie’s folks live in Helena and they have a day to swing out to the river and dip a line.

And I am happy they do. Julie’s second trip fishing the Mo and this her big one. She also got a rainbow or two.

We love women and female anglers here at Headhunters. Thanks for coming out again Mark and Julie. We enjoyed a great dinner at Izaak’s following the day with Ribs, Half a Chicken, Mac and Cheese, Chicken Wings, and a Blackened Chicken Caesar Salad. Yummy!

We may slip up once in a while but the entire HH gang is on board. So not as many at all fish outta the water.

Keepemwet is the right thing to do and Mary agrees.

We all have plenty of 16″ Rainbows. Do you/we really need more?

May says no, no thanks.

Remember them how they are as they are etched in our memories for life.

Words of wisdom Mary. Thanks a ton for coming out with Brian and we will see you again in 2016…or later this fall for the BWO bite!

Yep,a  fly caught Walleye on the upper river.

Pretty cool Jen.

You totally rate with us.

And I bet that was a tasty fish!

Jen out fishes her husband most of the time too. Not uncommon for gals around here.

Willie states that she does not row the boat as much as he would like though…

New Breed Chicks Rule Wendy Edition

New Breed Chicks Rule Wendy Edition

Wendy holding this nice Brown Trout from the Mighty Mo.

She and her husband came down for long weekend and left the kids with the grandparents.

Smart.

Good work Wendy.

They reside in the upper corner of Montana which is just  a stones throw from the Missouri. Yes, the Missouri is copse to everywhere.

Minneapolis, Seattle, San Fransisco, even New Jersey. Hop on that super sonic jet and fly on over.

We are here all 12 months. But if you like dry fly fishing, you should shoot for April thru Thanksgiving. A good time to visit.

Who knows, you gal pal could grace the hallowed pages of the Headhunters Blog!

Things are good here on the Mo. Caddis, MB’s, Baetis, Midges are all in play. An opportunity to toss the dry fly daily. That is what we are here for, known for, and love so much.

Try your headhunting skills soon. See you wandering the streets of Craig. Or the dry fly flats of the Mo…

New Breed Chicks Rule Gigi Edition

New Breed Chicks Rule Gigi Edition

One of our favorite people Gigi with this Brown Trout on our New Breed Chicks Rule Gigi Edition.

Gigi and Terry are fixtures at the shop. Well more Terry than Gigi but we really love seeing Gigi around.

And Terry too. But we love gals around the shop. So to all you gals, we love you and we love guiding gals.

They learn faster than the male counterpoint. Honest. They do.

And women are a ton of fun in the boat. They get the entire deal. It is not always about pounding on them. It is about the enjoyment of the day. And I gotta say it is quite refreshing!

Thanks Gigi for gracing the pages of the Headhunters Blog today and we of course look forward to fishing with you again.

Thanks again Donna for gracing the pages of this blog.

This Brown Trout on a dry-dripper. While this one did not inhale the Adams a few more did later in the afternoon.

Thanks again Donna for fishing with us here on the Mo. See you again this fall.

What the hell is a dry-dripper? A little tiny slender bodied mayfly dangling below some sort of floaty fly. At least that is what I call it…

New Breed Chicks Rule Molly Edition

New Breed Chicks Rule Molly Edition

New Breed Chick Mooly out with her family this past week.

Can she fish? Oh yeah.

She is no stranger to a fly rod. Molly spent her formative years in Jackson Hole skiing the winters until the snow became water. Then she would fish the streams until the mountains came ending the summer. Both she and her husband were engaged in the outdoor recreation business until the kids stared coming.

When she spoke about her youth, meaning post college days, Molly lit right up.

The last 12 years she and Greg have been raising 3 children in Minnesota. Now the kids are of an age where they can easily cox them into the rig for road trips westward with rods and skis delicately placed crammed into the back of the Family Truckster.

All the kids cast and fish well. Molly said they run the entire family out on the lake in a pontoon boat, motorized, with 5 float tubes stacked on the deck. Stuff each child into a tube and toss them off the back. When the troops are deployed she and Greg get far enough away from the kids so when the children run into trouble they re far enough away that they have to figure it out on their own. A perfect theory in my book. Teaching self sufficient fishing behaviors is smart. You gotta start them young with this tough love fly fishing program for it to be successful.

Just a little guidance, encouragement, coupled with distance allowing for self discovery.

Pretty smart Molly.

She is a great angler who is quite excited to get back to the western rivers as she stated she and the gang will be back soon.

While Molly was interested in her kids catching a few fish she was not all afraid to punish her husband. I don’t know what the final tally was but I think Molly may have edged Greg out.

She is now stranger to the Mo, nor is she to the New Breed Blog.

The entire Gross clan was out as Ron, Dan, Len, Diane and the brother from another mother Rick graced us for the latter part of October.

They are not afraid of a good time. Not at all.

Thanks Gross party. We love your folks. And thanks to Diane for keeping them moving in the right direction…

Really cool Jackie. She was out for the first time to the Mo with Headhunters Guide Jared Edens.

He husband Ken has made a few trips out with good friend and fishing partner Marko Baxter of Strike Foundy Indicators. Ken has done some testing for Marko and Strike Foundry…that’s what he calls it. Lots of testing. Here in Montana and definitely in the Driftless area. And probably a few other places too.

So Jackie said she oughtta come out to the Missouri River and do some testing herself!

And test she did. Catch she did. And enjoy she did!

Jo Darling fished with Headhunters Guide Mark Raisler this past week.

Mark fished with here husband Greg last year in conjunction with the RIO Line Co trip and he returned this year with his better half.

They will be back again for a longer stay in 2015.

Greg runs the media side of The Gorge Fly Shop located in Hood River Oregon. Check them out while in cruising up the Columbia.

Travis Duddles was visiting this year with the RIO/SAGE group. HE could not make it last year and Greg subbed in, graciously. It was nice to fish with these Oregon boys.

As for Jo, we will see you next year too! We look forward to it Jo and Greg!

Karen Sorocco with this nice fish last week on the Missouri River.

More and more women coming out with their girlfriends, boyfriends, husbands and by themselves too.

Love to see the gals on the water.

Women are a treat to fish with as they see the day as an entire experience. Catch some fish, look at the animals, chat, catch some more fish…

Women also still have the ability to learn. And learn they do.

And ego’s. They do not bring that emotion on board.

Until they start out-fishing the boys…which they commonly do.

Hooray for the women that fish the Mighty Mo.’

Bring it on!

New Breed Chicks Rule & Future Flyfishers

New Breed Chicks Rule & Future Flyfishers

New Breed Chicks Rule & Future Flyfishers today on the Headhunters Blog. Audrey helping Dad with this nice Missouri River Rainbow.

Good friends and original Headhunters clients Bret and Sara Childers from up north are now bringing several generations of the Childers clan. Father and Mother Childers and now their daughter Audrey.

Here is a note that Sara dropped us this morning.

Hello Headhunters,

We had a great time on the Missouri and enjoyed staying in your awesome Rv spots. We got a good picture of Bret & Audrey with a Mo Rainbow and thought it might be a good addition for your “Chicks Rule” on the blog. She floated Craig to Stickney with us, and by the end of the trip she was looking out the front of the boat telling her Dad, “I see sippers!”

Thanks
Bret, Sara & Audrey Childers
Thanks Sara and thanks Audrey for rocking it on the Mighty Mo. We love seeing you folks here int he RV park and on the water. Bret helped John and Mark test the Inflatable Drift Boat by NRS last summer. Brett and Sara love to hang on the porch too. Can you blame them?
Thanks again Childers family for visiting and enjoying Montana’s Missouri River. See you soon!

Annie today with a nice Rainbow caught not he Mighty Mo with HH Guide Mark Raisler

Her husband Sam caught some too!

A scorcher today with dry fly fishing for Trico feeders for about 2 hours. Longer in some areas.

Thunderstorms building as I frantically write this late afternoon Hump Day post.

Some weeds in the river but not as bad as previous years. Honest.

Some more caddis around than the previous week. Trico’s strong. PMD spinner falls still quite impressive and the trout are responding.

Give us a shout if you want your gal on this website.

Hope you folks are having a fantastic summer out there in the world somewhere.

We are. Annie is too. Nice work today Annie on her first guided trip to the Mo. They say more next year!

We look forward to it!

A standing “O”!

Stephanie fishes a ton. Well, only on the Mo, and this just her 4th time this last week.

Stephanie also caught her first posted up dry fly fish on a Buzzball. Fun times had by all here fishing Montana’s Missouri River.

Her husband Brian fishes a ton. Honest.

But did he make the blog this sunny July Sunday?

Nope.

Nice to have you back in the spot light Steph.

New Breed Chicks. Richardson Edition.

Renee Faltings shows off her sick PMD inventory. Renee is from the Ketchum/Hailey, ID area, and all the cool kids there rock a Richardson Chest Box. They always have. Many moons ago I was a guide on Silver Creek and had one myself. I did not, however, paint my toenails blue. It was the 80’s, and I painted them teal or purple.

Interested in one? It takes quite a while to get your build from Richardson, or you could call Renee’s buddies at Silver Creek Outfitters and see if they have any in stock. They sometimes do.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report New Breed Style

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report New Breed Style

Char Ford fishing with Headhunters Guide Jared Edens today on this updated fishing report from Headhunters Fly Shop in Craig Montana.

It is July, and the fishing is easy. Well sometimes. I am referencing the Porgy and Bess tune from the Gershwin Brothers. Catfish are jumping’…

On any given day the stretch you fish can be quite vacant. Look around and go the other way. It works. After the 5th? Maybe.

Not too many bugs yesterday as we are in a mode where sometimes they are gonna come big, and other days not so much.

5 Ways to get it done this July

Dry or Die. Most that are here for the July period are DFO’s. Tie them on and cast. Bring your industrial bottles of GINK and Fly-Agra. Get out early and stay out late.

Blind fish the dry. Many do this in between rising fish. A good way to pick up a couple extra trout. Look for 18″-36″ of moving water and toss an attractor like an ant or a giant Adams or some sort of caddis.

Dry-Dropper. Something that not many of us do. It sacrifices both the dry and the dropper. We believe that it is perfect for freestone rivers, but not so hot for our river. Reduces the effectiveness of the dry and the dropper equally. Choose one or the other. Your most efficient option.

Deep Nymph Rig. Get the flies not he bottom with a split shot. The bottom is where most of the fish live. Deep nymphing is batting for average. Singles win ballgames. For those who like to catch a bundle, this is your technique.

Streamer Fishing. Underrated summertime activity. Strip them fast before the weeds make an appearance. Explosive grabs and bigger trout. Try it when things get slow on the other fronts.

Headhunters open daily @ 630am and open late until 9pm. Stop in for the best in Missouri River Flies. Free info too.

New Breed Chicks Rule Raining Cats and Dogs Edition

New Breed Chicks Rule Raining Cats and Dogs Edition

A submission from our friend Stephen Caldwell and his wife Torrey from the rainy Mo this last week.

It is sunny now and we aim to keep it that way for a while.

Here is the short note that Stephen sent along.

Mark,

Maybe this is worthy for a New Breed Chicks Rule? My wife Torrey Caldwell told me she’s had enough of those rainbows that she was consistently pulling out of the water all day, she said I want a bigger brown.
So we started fishing “brownie” like water and she popped the hook on 3 very nice ones prior to this one. She was very happy with this one, she picked it off out of a pod of rising fish with a small sz 18 caddis dry in the middle of a rain storm.
Not too many chicks out there are sniping browns off out of a drift boat during a downpour with a smile on there face like that, and the ones that are we need to make sure to not take for granted because they are awesome.
Thanks,

-Stephen Caldwell

She has been traveling the great US of A eating fish though! So we cannot hold that against her.

Aislinn lives just up the road and fishes the Mo more often. Some times she brings her kids and sometimes her husband Chris too.

My Day with Nick and the Fish Magnet

My Day with Nick and the Fish Magnet

Ed Note: This article sent to us by Headhunters Fly Shop friend Terry Armstrong in regards to their annual guided trip through Headhunters Fly Shop and Guide Service during the Spring Special. Headhunters Guide Nick Stipech is the guide in this story and a strong asset of our guide team. Thanks to all for participating and to you Terry for writing and fro you Gigi for becoming the fish magnet!

My Day with Nick and the Fish Magnet | Terry Armstrong

This year’s trip started the night before with us making sure all our needed gear and then some was packed and ready to go. We packed two 5 wt graphite rods; one was my old reliable workhorse rod a Sage RPL that has been with me over 25 years now, and the other my wife Gigi’s Winston.

Then just in case this happened to be the day the fish started poking their noses out and sipping on midges and BWO’s I threw in the Sweetgrass Mantra bamboo rod I bought last October and haven’t had much opportunity to fish with yet. Then I gave some serious thought to throwing in the 8wt streamer rod for good measure. I couldn’t help at least thinking about it. It’s the streamer junkie in me.

The rods where then followed with an assortment of other items deemed necessary for a day on the water in late April. Hats, gloves, handwamers, rain gear, and of course the condiments: wine (for her), bourbon (for me), and cigars.

We arrived Sunday morning at 8am in the thriving metro Craig area. Town was buzzing and the Headhunters Fly Shop parking lot was wriggling. To be honest I really didn’t pay much attention to the rest of the town except for a brief whimsical gaze in the direction of Joe’s Bar. We met up with Nick, our guide for the day, was already there and waiting.  We exchanged pleasantries, decided on section of river to float, and transferred gear from our vehicle to his.

We started at the Wolf Creek Bridge without incident.  Just the last minute usual trips to the little unisex concrete bathroom. I have to admit it is nice having someone rigging rods for you and putting the boat in the water while you light a cigar and enjoy the view. Or in Gigi’s case…wandering around the area contemplating possible hiding places for a Geo-cache reportedly in the immediate area.

The boat was launched and so began our day on the water. It was a great day of nymphing with a long leash and some scud imitations. Gigi as usual caught at least 2 fish to my one, and probably even better than that, but who’s counting?

On many occasions Gigi had a fish on before I even had my line all the way out. Chicks rule and she was a fish magnet on the water. The fish are definitely becoming more energetic with the warming water temps. Didn’t get a look at the backing but came close on a couple of occasions.

We were into fish all day long with mostly sunny skies and cool temps 40 to 50 degrees. The big “W” reared its ugly head at times but had an adequate number of merciful reprieves to keep the day fun. Half-way through the float I was thinking this was going to be to short of a day that we should have chosen a longer float, but by the time we reached Spite Hill to take out I had caught plenty of fish and was more than ready to bring a great time to a great end.

Gigi being the show off, and a fish magnet…she caught one last fish as we headed to the takeout.

Once again I ended a day of guided fishing as a slightly better angler then I started with a few more tidbits of knowledge added to my 35 plus years of experience. It never ceases to amaze me how little I know. After fishing the Missouri River 50 plus days a year for 35 plus years I still am learn new things every time I fish with someone else or read a book.

This was my fourth guided trip in my life and my third on the Missouri and I have ended each trip a little better angler than when I started. Thanks to Headhunters Fly Shop Nick Stipech for a great day.

New Breed Chicks are everywhere and welcome here in Craig.

New Breed Chicks Rule

New Breed Chicks Rule | Carroll College Edition

Brittany and Allyson rock. They came out from Carroll College and fished hard in the driving snow this last Saturday.

It was damn cold. Actually, brutal.

Snowing sideways and the primary 15mph breeze coming from the North.

Headhunters Guide Beth guided these two into these great Missouri River Trout.

Thanks gals. See you on the river…

New Breed Chicks Rule #421

New Breed Chicks Rule #421

Sally rocks. She rules too.

She can throw a dry with the best of them. And does often. She even lets her husband Chuck sit in the back, most of the time.

HH Guide Jared got her in position to hook this nice Brown Trout on a Skwala.

Nice Work Sally!

We will probably see her here on this very fishy blog again someday. They visit Craig often…

Sunday Scenery

Sunday Scenery | New Breed Chicks Rule

Sunday Scenery Brown Trout Edition New Breed Chicks Rule today on the Headhunters Fly Shop.

Sunnier skies, brighter browns, warmer bones.

We are thinking of warmer mornings, afternoons, and nights.

Until then we are still huddled under electric blankets.

Doing the sun dance this afternoon for sure.

Maybe I’ll start it out with a couple pulls off the Fireball bottle…
