Food for thought...

Food for thought…

Boat ramps are pretty sketchy as of late.

Several fellers have been stuck. For lengths of time. Be sure you are prepared to be stuck. Liquids and food. A beer or two and a bag of jerky.

Chains have been seen this last week several times.

This photo at the Craig Boat Ramp Saturday afternoon. Needed chains for many river extractions.

Check closely your boat ramp before you get stuck.

Unless you got plenty of beer and jerky…

Big Sky Country and the Who | I Can See for Miles

Big Sky Country is based on this line. I can see for miles. The Who did a tune int he late 60’s with this theme.

Are the messages congruent? No not really.

Nevertheless a great classic Who tune.

Warm here today on the river with snow melting. Windy! Highs tipped 50F yesterday and more today?

Anglers around an fishing. Warm, and windy. Some spey dudes and some nymphers.

Snow at the front end of the week. Some more winter weather for sure ahead.

Enjoy your Saturday and the I Can See for Miles concept.

A nice shot of Mountain Palace.

I haven’t posted one this last week have I?

A pic of MP, my favorite formation on the Mo, near here, in central Montana.

Mountain Palace brought to you today by Headhunters Fly Shop and Guide Service.

A good Free Spey Clinic yesterday. Some new blood, some old blood, and a couple instructors, and lots of success by the attendees!

Thanks for coming, see us again in February and March. The 7th of the month for both of these upcoming clinics. And, Gould/McCune on April 11 and 12. Sign up today.

More on this fabulous clinic tomorrow.

Happy Sunday and enjoy the football. Tie a few flies too…

3 Generations of Missouri River Anglers

3 Generations of Missouri River Anglers

The Tomlinson’s from Seattle Washington.

They used to fish Alaska and now they have found the Missouri River in Craig.

Mark fished with John, the patriarch, a 8 years ago. Then John brought his 2 sons and a couple son-in-laws and a friend as well.

Now the third generation has arrived. Schooling in Missoula and fishing with family on the Tomlinson annual fall Missouri River trip.

Headhunters Guides Peter Skidmore, Ben Hardy and Mark continue to enjoy fishing with the gang.

Can’t wait to fish with the boys again this year in September!

Start your Missouri River family legacy this year. Your kids will love it.

You might enjoy it too…

P.S. We miss you Rambo!

Spring Special continues through the month of April. $300 Guide Trips and discounted lodging. Best deals of the year.

Midges. BWO’s show this month. When? A guarantee, or closer to reality would mean middle of the month. On a warm spring, first part of the month. Skwalas too.

May

Missouri River Holiday Booking Reminder
Rainbows are on the rise. Populations strong.

May is most of the staff’s favorite Missouri River month. Fewer anglers than both April and June with lots of bug action.

Might be the best streamer month of the year.

Craig Caddis Festival and BBQ Cook-Off Saturday May 16th. Afternoon action with live music, BBQ eats, kids events, parade, live and silent auctions, and much more! We’ll see you at the 9th Annual Craig Caddis Festival.

Spring Stream Opener. The Dearborn opens the 3rd Saturday of May and we begin our Dearborn River Guiding Season. A great small stream in our own backyard. Check out the link for more info or call the shop. We love this short and sweet time frame to fish the Dearborn. Some years a month, some years less than a month. Call to get on board for this wilderness adventure.

Nymphing? Rock Star.

Sight fishing for late season Baetis and early lower river caddis. Midges too.

Lighter river pressure for sure.

June

Game Time. 1st or 2nd busiest month of the year. July is the other. Bookings for June and July begin in June or July, the previous year. Long time guests love the action in June high water or not.

River can be higher than you wish. Mother Nature is a hard one to read. Watch the site for our insight into what is happening for the water year ahead. Flows in the last 10 years have been extremely high, extremely low, and a couple of the years coming in at average. But average is not happen often in the last 25 years. So, a crap shoot. A risk that many, many anglers are willing to make.

Dry flies daily. Caddis, PMD’s arrive by the middle of the month. Good to great dry fly fishing depending on the water level. We are looking for under 8K for a very strong dry fly bite.

Book your Missouri River June trip soon!

We start fishing the Blackfoot River across the divide. A great day trip to break up your Missouri River week. A dry fly excursion that all who experience the Blackfoot are glad they did! Ask ay of the shop staff about booking a Blackfoot day or two.

July

Missouri River Holiday Booking Reminder
Trico Hatches on the Mo July and August

Not a month for the fickle. Combat fishing. If you like solace it is not July. Why so many anglers? Dry fly all day. Honest.

Caddis, PMD’s, Trico’s, terrestrials. The most consistent dry fly bite of the entire year.

4th of July is one big ass party in Craig. Our favorite holiday of the year. Bar-None.

Book today if you want guides or lodging in the month of July, or June. Get it straightened out this week with your family and friends. Not a ton left on the table for lodging, and guides are dwindling fast. We have rental boats too.

Blackfoot River is in full swing. Our guides love to sneak across the divide for a day of Freestone Fishing on the Blackfoot.

August

Good in the front end of the month. Not as strong towards the latter part. Sometimes the water gets too warm for trout comfort and the perennial Missouri River weeds come into play.

Terrestrials, caddis, some PMD action but they are on the decline, Trico’s. Ants and hoppers rule the mid day with Trico’s on the plan every morning.

Get out early for the best fishing of the day.

The Blackfoot makes a lot of sense this month. Before dawn meet times to head over the hill to fish this fantastic river.

September

Missouri River Holiday Booking Reminder
Big Brown Trout on the Mo!

A very busy month. 4th busiest behind June, July, April. One of our best nymphing months.

Not a ton of dry fly action. Can do well on terrestrials and some Trico falls in the A.M.. Psuedo’s, small BWO’s, can get rolling in the afternoon. But don’t plan on coming to the Missouri to get your dry fly fix.

September is the sleeper month. It books earlier than you would think.

The last and final month of Blackfoot River fishing. Maybe the best of all 4 months. Not much pressure at all and the fall colors are just awesome.

Craig’s 1st Beer Festival Brews and Browns scheduled for the 2nd Saturday of the month. More info as we get closer.

October

Baetis, October Caddis, some midge, Psuedo’s. Good dry fly action. Historically great.

Nymphing is really freaking good.

Streamer fishing is dynamite.

One of the favorite months for long time Missouri River anglers, industry folks, out of work freestone guides, and you. There is a nice pace to October and we like it.

Lodging fills fast. At the time of this post October already has some ink on the calendar.

There is the entire year. Hatch periods are pretty consistent and our blog, this blog, has updates in regards to fishing, hatches, lodging, and guiding, and more! Not every event is listed like our impromptu Drift Boat Drive-Ins, Headhunters Free BBQ nights throughout the summer, live music, and all around hilarity on the grounds of Headhunters Fly Shop.

These are pretty strong outlines of the year but some of you may need even more information about types of lodging or setting up a group trip. We make it easy for you throughout the entire process. We are the Missouri River experts. If you need any additional information you can email us  info@headhuntersflyshop.com or give us a shout on the Missouri River Hotline 406-235-3447 8-5 daily.

This is just awesome. If you dig Samba, and jive.

And 60’s Jazz.

Love the background banter of the band. Sounds like a party, all the time.

I’m sure they are drinking, I’d be for sure.

Happy Sunday. Enjoy this killer Adderly tune.

The first version is the kick-ass version recorded in San Francisco. The audio is just great.

If you are at work today…Close your office door, close your eyes, and drift with the music.

If you are throwing a cocktail party tonight…play this album.

This the the version with the live band, live video.

The Moller SkyCar.

This cat has several models for you to choose from.

As far as we know there are not any SkyCars on the road yet.

But the Moller Neuera, pictured above, and the Moller SkyCar 400 are two that strike my fancy.

No word yet for the development timeline of the Moller SkyBoat? We will keep you posted here.

Moller SkyCar. Why not a SkyBoat?

Think about it. No need for a shuttle. No need for a truck to haul the boat to the river. No waiting at the boat ramp. No problem SkyHopping over the dude who just low-holed you. Fish places that never get boat pressure, or even foot traffic.

And be the coolest angler on the planet rolling up to the fly shop in this rig…

Montana Spey Clinic

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

CLINIC #1 IS IN THE BOOKS

An excellent turnout for our first two-handed Montana Spey clinic of the year. The weather was nice, and we had a little glitch with our google drive sign up list and overbooked it. That’s OK. The weather was great – the best we’ve had in over a year – and the crowd was enthusiastic. All 18 of them, and we had some from as far away as Denver at this clinic. Might be the new distance record.

I continue to tweak our presentation and subject matter. We’re starting to get into the pure Skagit stuff a bit more, at least for those who want to learn “sustained anchor” techniques, as well as try Skagit lines instead of our preferred Scandi rigs. Ninch is your man.

I was glad to see several anglers really taking advantage of the gear available to them. Switching lines, rods, and tips to see how they’re rod reacts differently. It’s often dramatic. You just got to try it. Several attendees brought their own rods, and I think at least one or two of them will be looking for a different line. It’s so important that you get the right line for your rod. Try it, try it, try it…. That’s why we have all of those lines and tips at the shop.

And oh yeah, you can try them anytime your in town. Just swing by.

The ECHO Glass Spey Rod got a good workout, and most – if not all – of those who tried it loved it. We will have several more for demo (and for sale) by the first of the year. This rods really shined for those new to the sport. And veterans just love the funky, slow powerful action.

Our next clinic is Jan. 10th, weather permitting. Sign up now at the shop.[/vc_column_text][us_image image=”8550″ size=”full” link=”” onclick=”lightbox”][us_image image=”8552″ size=”full” link=”” onclick=”lightbox”][us_image image=”8551″ size=”full” link=”” onclick=”lightbox”][vc_column_text]After the clinic, Dewey just couldn’t help getting out there and nabbing a few nice Missouri River trout![/vc_column_text][us_image image=”8553″ size=”full” link=”” onclick=”lightbox”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Lots of folks casting, a ton of fellowship, and some fish were caught too.

Guide trips out today while the weather is cooperating. A few boats on the water using the only shuttle service in Craig. Quite a few wade anglers roaming the waters of the Missouri as well.

Enjoy fishing, napping, or watching football.

Or if you live here locally…all three.

Not all that fishy around here this last week but the week ahead looks much more digestible with daytime temps in the tasty 40’s.

Swing Class tomorrow morning at 9am. John says he has been tweaking the morning presentation getting ready for a new year.

Folks out tossing flies into the waters of the Missouri yesterday, today, and through the weekend too.

Headhunters Winter Fly Fishing Events & 2015 Lodging Update

Headhunters Winter Fly Fishing Events & 2015 Lodging Update

Getting throughout the holidays can be difficult. Getting through the holidays without either fishing or planning for fishing can be really difficult.

We suggest either route to get you through. If you need a fix right now you can check out our Vimeo page by Scumliner Media here. No Balck Sabbath, just tons of fun fishing footage.

Back on track here as I got kinda excited about winter fishing. YEs, winter fishing. We fish all winter long here on the Missouri River. Some days are better than others. There are plenty of days that the weather is not all that conducive for angling. Just not all that comfortable on days when it is too much below 32F. At 0F no chance of us getting out there for too long…

Missouri River 2015 Lodging Update

Ninch wanted me to let you folks know that the lodging scenario for both June and July is fading away rapidly. Already the two most popular Missouri River months for fly fishing and consequently lodging June and July lodging is always tight. This year is now different.

The amount of advanced 2015 bookings for June and July is pretty overwhelming. Dry flies and long days with nice warm seasonable temperatures bring many anglers to Montana’s Missouri River for these favorable months.

The upshot is as follows. Ninch says,

“Book now or stay in Helena or Great Falls this June and July. And, might as well get your guide locked in too. It makes a lot of sense to get these reservations in the books before the New Year arrives setting your trip in stone for 2015. Don’t be left out yearning for your favorite Craig Trout Camp cabin or any one of our killer riverfront properties.”

Check out www.craiglodging.com for all the 2015 Missouri River Montana accommodations and lodging options.

Black Sabbath War Pigs California Jam ’74 Video

Having a hard time getting the engines revved after the holiday weekend?

Ya, us too.

I have a great idea to get rid of those Too Much Turkey Blues.

Sabbath.

Go to full screen.

Turn up the volume.

Stand up.

Push Play.

Air Guitar this entire hard rock anthem.

The entire thing.

Dance, fist pump, sing and shout, head bangin’.

Do it.

Then walk out of the office knocking over a few fake office plants on your way out mumbling some obscenities just like Ozzy…

First video from ’74 California Jam. Hippies in the crowd.

Second video from ’05 Ozzfest. Just rockers. I think I like the second one…just sayin’

Good Old Days…

I was sitting in Joe’s Bar the other day, no really, and someone made the comment,

You should have seen the river years ago, it was so much better.

So being a nosy guy I thought I would ask,

Q: How long ago are we talking about?

A: Oh, early 80’s.

Now, I am dating myself. My first memory that I can conjure up had to have in the late 60’s. I probably started to seriously fish the river in the early 70’s. About the time that Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974) came out in the theaters.

.
Disclaimer by me, Dewey: This is simply Dewey’s lifetime observations of the Missouri as they pertain to the quality of the river. I may disagree with someone’s opinion of the river. That said it doesn’t mean I am right.

In my late teens my buddies and I would jump in my 69 Ford F-150 and race up to the river above Craig to fish the evening caddis hatch. I remember needing only one pattern to get through the night the Missouri River Special.

Screen Shot 2014-11-30 at 1.38.54 PM
Skaggs Drug Center 10th Ave @ Holiday Village Great Falls

That was due to most fly selections came on a card from Skagg’s Drug Store or Great Falls Sporting Goods. This spawned my desire to tie my own flies.

We would be the only anglers on the river as this was pre “The River Runs Through It” (1992) days. Yes this was the good old days with fish rising everywhere and most eating our flies. Good thing because our floating lines didn’t float very well and what the heck was a tapered leader!?

All would be well until those in charge at Holter Dam decided to bump the river flow up. That would be the end of the bite. In the good old days the river fluctuation occurred often. (Our understanding is 2K<8K>2K as the power generation was needed.)

Stocking of the river was still in practice with a 10 fish limit. (Stocking of Montana rivers until 1983.) I can imagine how this could be a gratifying memory. My recollection is less fish per mile with the average size of 14 to 15 inches. Once the stocking practice ceased the size and fish per mile increased. Although currently the angling pressure has increased the fish per mile and size continues to be far better than the past.

Screen Shot 2014-11-30 at 1.55.50 PM
Cool!

In the good old days I would fish much larger flies and presentation did not have to be perfect. In the late-eighties to mid-nineties I would fish sink tip lines with a sz. 8 Bitch Creek Special or Peacock Wooly Bugger. This was my nymph, streamer, and dry fly set up for all conditions.

Gradually my go to method ceased to be effective. Now I could blame it on the increased fishing pressure but I have always had the desire to learn more about the sport and become a better angler. It forced me to learn to nymph, tie better patterns, and present the dry fly drag free. I learned to fish down stream with a reach cart before I new the cast had a name.

Once the sport exploded the Missouri was not left behind with the angling pressure increasing exponentially. I’ll admit driving up to fish the Mo and finding someone occupying the spot I wanted to fish was frustrating. Again it forced me to seek out new water and deal with. I could whine about it but the fact is it forced me learn new water. If not for more people I would probably be stuck in the same old water.

I am much more fulfilled to the challenge of the Missouri River today over yesterday. All of the local folks and fishing folks in Craig Montana are pretty chill. The Missouri is a large river with lots of room. I dig the younger fisherman as their talent and expertise amazes me.

Screen Shot 2014-11-28 at 8.05.11 PM
Scene from Thunderbolt and Lightfoot with Eastwood looking west at current I-15 Rest Stop site. The old Dearborn school used be be here until ? That’s where they found the money behind the chalkboard.

Sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong era, but I get over that in a hurry when I look at the job market. Remember, fishing isn’t always about catching fish. It’s about being in the moment and enjoying it.

Enough bull sh#$ from me. People are always commenting on the good old days and that ‘you should have seen the fishing.’

I believe that today is and are the good old days and don’t let anybody ruin your own personal Missouri River Montana experiences!

Great Falls Sporting Goods 1924 Image

Cool image from the inter-web yesterday doing some surfing about.

Check out the stuff in this 1924 image of Great Falls Sporting Goods Store.

Cool creels hanging, upper left has a hook display or two, I think reels on the left too.

How about the wooden glass topped merchandising cases. What is in the cases on the right?

Craig Bridge circa?

Love to walk back in time and check out the inventory.

I wonder how much the flies were? And what was the selection like?

I suspect they did not have 1200+ fly bins.

Although I bet the anglers of the day did not need as many options.

Cat gut leaders, silk lines, bamboo poles, and Leadwing Coachmans.

All you need!

The Craig Bridge was here. It was built in 1902.

Joe’s Bar? Not yet…

Shop Small this Saturday

Shop Small this Saturday at your local stores. Whether it be in the small fishing ‘burb of Craig or your hometown…do your community a favor and Shop Small this Saturday.

Wouldn’t hurt your local retailers to shop small on Monday too.

Shop Small this Saturday
Headhunters Fly Shop open daily

I too shop at big box, online, and cannot pull myself away from a Big Mac once in a while. But I also remember to spend at small specialty retail as much as possible. It’s good for all.

The dollars you spend at your local shops stay in the community. That is a benefit for you, your family, and your neighbors.

Just think a bit this holiday period and remember that your local businesses love you, need you, and help in more ways than the big box store.

Thanks again for reading this sometimes informational blog from The Missouri River.

We are your fly shop when you are in Craig fishing the Missouri. We can pop whatever you may need in the mail and it will arrive on your doorstep soon. Operators standing by @ 406-235-3447.

Try some swinging. You’ll like it. You can wear gloves. If you don’t twitch your fly, you can drink beer while you’re fishing. You’re uncle’s a swinger, right?[/vc_column_text][us_image image=”8198″ align=”center” size=”full” link=”” onclick=”lightbox”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

November fly fishing on the Mighty Mo in the shadows of Eagle Rock.

Pretty good stuff and a pretty good time.

Bait anglers, swingers, and a few nymphers out on the river today.

We had a few folks in and drifting today down the Missouri River.

Stop in this weekend for a shuttle, a few flies, and a cup of Joe before heading out on the river.

It’ll be comfortable again on the river with comfortable air temps and light winds!

Silly Sunday Scenery

Wolf Creek Bridge in the snow.

It’s cold too.

The game changes tomorrow. We will be fishing.

See you swingers on the water.

Enjoy your Sunday. Today we stay inside one more day and watch football, tie flies, nap.

Hopefully see some fall for a couple weeks before the winter tide is too strong and overcomes us.

Use your gas savings for fly fishing stuff!

Reduced gas prices this last month around America. Sounds like additional drops in fuel prices as we move deeper into the winter.

www.fuelguagereport.com states that the average US gas prices to drop below $3.00/gallon for the 1st time since 2010. They also state that this is the longest consecutive decline in gas prices since 2008.

Those are stunning facts. What’er gonna do with the all the extra dollars in your pocket?

If you save X dollars a week by saving $0.30/gallon at 25 gallons a whack totals $7.50. $30/month, $360/year.

What can you do with $360 fly fishing dollars? Here are a few ideas below. Feel free to add your own into the mix…

Hire a fly fishing sherpa or fly fishing concierge service. My plan has always been to employ this idea. You don’t want a guide but you like to have let’s say certain tasks performed before you arrive at the river?

A fly fishing concierge would…

  • Launch your boat for you.
  • Prepare the ice box. Your YETI would be pre-cooled and filled with your preferred assortment. Perrier, a nice yet varied selection of macro brews,a dn a flask of your favorite single malt scotch.
  • Rig the rods. 1 dry, i streamer, and 2 nymph rods. New leaders and tippets daily and clean fly lines.
  • Lunch. I like a selection of cheeses and meats. Crackers. Like a water cracker and a Ritz. Love a Ritz. Salami’s, prosciutto, smoked ham, a smoked cheddar, a soft French too. Pickles, capers, olives, pepperoncini’s. You know. The good stuff.
  • At the end of the trip you would just pull up the boat on shore and leave it for the concierge to pick up and clean, preparing for the next days voyage.
  • Perfect. Lower the stress level of preparing for the day. Your concierge would see to it that your fishing day was as pleasurable as possible.

Casting Lessons

DSC_2450
Casting lessons make you better!

Not as exciting as the fly fishing concierge service but probably more practical.A few casting lessons scattered throughout the year to get you to the point you want to be at this coming fly fishing season.

Some may want instruction for their upcoming saltwater trip. Others may want help with their tuck cast or any of the slack line trout casts.

Find the one who fits your learning style. This is important. Not all instructors are right for all individuals.

Then practice. Use the rest for a new fly line to treat yourself at the end of the process. You will also have more fun fly fishing because you will have more success! EZ dollars to fun conversion. Easy!

New Reel

Many fly reels are priced int he mid 300 range. A Nautilus, a SAGE, an Orvis, an Ebay find. Your choice. Get yourself some fly fishing jewelry with your gas savings.

Several New Fly Lines

Toss the old cracked and not slippery lines into the garbage bin. You will be happier every time you cast for the next year. Can’t remember when you replaced the fly line on your SAGE Z-Axis? Your Sweetwater Bamboo Classic? Need to upgrade your line for your new Loomis NRX LP? You should answer yes to all of the above.

The best thing beyond a casting lesson for you fishing improvement in the year 2015 ahead is to replace your fly lines.

Just do it. Smiling anglers, you, is what a new fly line will deliver.

An Upgrade on your next Guide Trip

DSC_0099
Go solo?

What kind of upgrade am I speaking about? Well, I’ll tell ya. Getting rid of that annoying fishing partner of yours who commonly hogs your water and thinks it is your fault! That is the only upgrade you need for fly fishing Nirvana. That $360 in gas savings can get you into a guide boat by yourself. Buy him, your asshole buddy, out of the equation.

Yet another way to smile.

P.S. If you like your fly fishing buddy, that is cool. Keep him in the boat.nJust use the money to tip your guide more. Everybody smiles! He likes new fly lines too!

Mish-Mash Fly Fishing Money

  • A partial fly rod
  • A down payment on your trip to the Missouri River
  • Lodging deposit for the Craig Trout Camp
  • A few dinners at Izaak’s
  • 7 rounds for the house @ Joe’s Bar
  • A rental car for the week fishing
  • A new kids rod by ECHO. The perfect gift for your fly fishing protege. $180 for the entire package rod, reel, and line @ Craigflyshop.com
  • A YETI Cooler
  • 2 Pair of Polarized sunglasses. Smith or Costa. Your choice. One for each season.
  • New SIMMS Waders. Or at least half of the cost. Stay dry and warm this coming year. Quality waders are worth their weight in gold. Is this the year for new waders?
  • 1 Howler Bros Gaucho shirt, dinner for 4 at the taco cart, a couple glow in the dark tarpon lures, a 24 pack of Corona’s, $4/gas, a good lantern, and a GoPro 3 camera. Produce night bridge fishing video in the Keys jumping big tarpon parlaying your fame into really nothing of value except for several hangovers in the future…if you are grasping at straws?!

Just a few ideas for all that dough you won’t be spending at the pumps this winter. Prices are bound to sky rocket as we approach the summer of 2015. You know another good idea is to buy your airline tickets for your fly fishing trips this coming summer in the winter. Cheaper flights? Take advantage of the drop in gas pricing this year and Use your gas savings for fly fishing stuff!

Stickney to Palace

Stickney to Palace. A shuttle driver’s story

Stickney to Palace: A shuttle driver’s story

Max brings us this story from inside his brain. He and John fished yesterday, Monday, and endured the cold weather. Max penned this Sunday morning…

With winter weather moving in I think it’s safe to say that yesterday, Saturday,  was the last super busy shuttle day of the fall. We did a November-high 19 shuttles on Saturday. Dudes got after it Saturday, and for good reason. A full blown shit-storm is blowing in this evening, gusting over 30 mph and bringing with it one to two inches of snow.

If the over/under for combined shuttles on Monday and Tuesday is five, my money is on the under. The temperature in the early part of this week could get as low as -10, almost a 70 degree drop from our upper-50’s afternoon Saturday.. That said, I’m sure there are some diehards who would love to prove me wrong and float The Mo in sub-zero temperature this week. Maybe I should take the over.

All things considered, it’s been an interesting fall to say the least. High temps in October generally stayed above 55 degrees and it was not unusual for it to be 70 degrees and sunny. Not your ideal conditions to catch the fall baetis emergence. I think I heard Helena had its warmest October on record in 2014 (time to start trading in those gas-guzzling, drift boat-hauling pickups for so,e sort of Hybrid?). Jokes aside, it has been an odd month of fishing here.

The streamer bite, although picking up daily, has been very inconsistent. I’ve heard fantastic reports of 40 streamer eats on a sunny day, and terrible reports the next day under an overcast sky. We had what I would call really good streamer fishing this week on the upper river. Some awesome eats on the Dali Lama, my favorite Missouri River streamer. So the chase is definitely on… for now. Dry flies? They’ll eat it ’em for sure, but it’s slower than we’d like.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve enjoyed answering the question, “Are the baetis going yet?” The answer is still unfortunately, “No, not really. They’re out there; you’ll see a few. But they’re not really going yet.” Hopefully this cold front gives them the kick in the ass they deserve for making us wait so long. You know what they say though, good things come to those who wait, and wait, and wait some more.

If so, will you be the one who floats The Mo’ this Tuesday and breaks the bank for all the suckers like me who took the under bet on shuttles? I’ll be here in the shop, staying warm, drinking coffee, and talking trout, football, and rutting mule deer.

*On a side note, have you seen the bucks this week? Mule Deerdefinitely swollen at the neck and coming into the rut big time. My prediction for peak rut activity is one week from today. Whitetails still two weeks out.

As I’m typing on this warm Sunday morning, I’m thinking that if you’re not out fishing today then you’re missing your last chance for mid-50’s weather of the year. Fall is coming to a quick end and winter is approaching. The snow will probably fly sideways tonight and tomorrow morning I will probably feel like staying in bed a little longer than usual. Time to put the Muck boots and Simms Bulkley jacket to good use.

Stay warm this week and don’t be that guy on your street who gets into a fender-bender because he forgets how to drive in the snow.

Cheers,

Max Mattioli

Ed Note: Max, you did beat the odds for Monday Tuesday. You bet the under and won.

Storm 1

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Fall no longer exists. We go from flip-flops to Muck Boots in a day. Yesterday Mark, Chad and clients got caught out in it. They new it was coming, but you never believe the temp is really going drop 40 degrees in an hour. North winds. Snow in your eyes. Push.

Iced up guides.

Max Matioli and I hit the river quickly yesterday afternoon. Temps around 20, dropping. Snow increased quickly as the afternoon wore on. The skies were absolutely loaded with waterfowl, and and it was obvious that every Swan in North Central was headed south. Our guides were icing up like it was 20 below. Super fast and super hard ice. Teeth and slobber were the only solution.

The trout were tailing all over the place. Whatever it is they root around for in the late fall. Scuds or Crawdads I’ve always assumed.

We stayed out long enough to hook some fish and get 1 or 2 to hand.

Storm 1 has arrived. Winter is here.[/vc_column_text][us_image image=”7440″ size=”full” link=”” onclick=”lightbox”][us_image image=”7439″ size=”full” link=”” onclick=”lightbox”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Wednesday Great Blue Heron

Thursday Great Blue Heron

We see the Great Blue Heron on Montana’s Missouri River corridor nearly daily. They do not go too long without a meal on this 4 season river. I’ve seen them get many fish. Juvenilles, teens, and a few adults. Once, a snake. Yep. They dig the reptiles.

Much of this information come from the cool site All About Birds Great Blue Heron. Check it here if you want even more information about the GBH.

Cool Blue Heron Facts

  • Thanks to specially shaped neck vertebrae, Great Blue Herons can curl their neck into an S shape for a more aerodynamic flight profile and to quickly strike prey at a distance.
  • Great Blue Herons have specialized feathers on their chest that continually grow and fray. The herons comb this “powder down” with a fringed claw on their middle toes, using the down like a washcloth to remove fish slime and other oils from their feathers as they preen. Applying the powder to their underparts protects their feathers against the slime and oils of swamps.
  • Great Blue Herons can hunt day and night thanks to a high percentage of rod-type photoreceptors in their eyes that improve their night vision.
Despite their impressive size, Great Blue Herons weigh only 5 to 6 pounds thanks in part to their hollow bones—a feature all birds share.
  • Great Blue Herons in the northeastern U.S. and southern Canada have benefited from the recovery of beaver populations, which have created a patchwork of swamps and meadows well-suited to foraging and nesting.
  • Along the Pacific coast, it’s not unusual to see a Great Blue Heron poised atop a floating bed of kelp waiting for a meal to swim by.
  • The white form of the Great Blue Heron, known as the “great white heron,” is found nearly exclusively in shallow marine waters along the coast of very southern Florida, the Yucatan Peninsula, and in the Caribbean. Where the dark and white forms overlap in Florida, intermediate birds known as “Wurdemann’s herons” can be found. They have the body of a Great Blue Heron, but the white head and neck of the great white heron.
  • The oldest Great Blue Heron, based on banding recovery, was 24 years old.
  • Great Blue Herons congregate at fish hatcheries, creating potential problems for the fish farmers. A study found that herons ate mostly diseased fish that would have died shortly anyway. Sick fish spent more time near the surface of the water where they were more vulnerable to the herons.

Habitat

  • Great Blue Herons live in both freshwater and saltwater habitats, and also forage in grasslands and agricultural fields, where they stalk frogs and mammals. Most breeding colonies are located within 2 to 4 miles of feeding areas, often in isolated swamps or on islands, and near lakes and ponds bordered by forests.

Food

Fish

  • Great Blue Herons eat nearly anything within striking distance, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, insects, and other birds. They grab smaller prey in their strong mandibles or use their dagger-like bills to impale larger fish, often shaking them to break or relax the sharp spines before gulping them down.

Nest Placement

  • Great Blue Herons nest mainly in trees, but will also nest on the ground, on bushes, in mangroves, and on structures such as duck blinds, channel markers, or artificial nest platforms. Males arrive at the colony and settle on nest sites; from there, they court passing females. Colonies can consist of 500 or more individual nests, with multiple nests per tree built 100 or more feet off the ground.

Behavior

  • Great Blue Herons forage, usually alone, across much of the U.S. This largest of the North American herons wades slowly or stands stock still, peering into the water for prey. In flight the Great Blue Heron folds it neck into an “S” shape and trails its long legs behind, dangling them as it prepares to land or when courting. Breeding birds nest in colonies that can number several hundred pairs, where they build stick nests in trees, on bushes, or on the ground. If you visit a colony, look for elaborate courtship and pair-bonding displays that include a ritualized greeting, stick transfers, and nest relief ceremony in which the birds erect their plumes and “clapper” their bill tips. Pairs are mostly monogamous during a season, but they choose new partners each year. Away from the colony, Great Blue Herons defend feeding territories from other herons with dramatic displays in which the birds approach intruders with their head thrown back, wings outstretched, and bill pointing skyward. Gulls and even humans may also be a target of this defensive maneuver.

Friday Friday from your friends at Headhunters Fly Shop and Guide Service.

This is not a shot from today, or yesterday.

I thought if I put up a shot of what fall generally looks like Mother Nature might find it OK to follow suit.

Until then, 60’s, sun, and wind will have to do.

Mike Tyson Mysteries

Does anyone else think this is ludicrous?

Boy I do.

So I will probably watch it.

Screen shot 2014-10-27 at 9.35.00 PM
I know what you’ll be watching on Mondays…

I came from a time where Iron Mike was one tough SOB and cartoons were part of my daily diet. Now Mike Tyson is a whack job and cartoons are still part of my diet.

Remember those early fights? Way before Mike was allowed to destroy himself?

They were just awesome. Check out Mike below with his best knockouts ever.

Read what the LA Times reporter Robert Lloyd has to say here.

So if you need a bit more ridiculousness in your life, beyond dry fly fishing for fiicky trout on the Mo…then watch Mike Tyson Mysteries on Adult Swim/Cartoon Network.

You missed the premier last night, but I am sure you can get it on the interweb somewhere…

Watch Iron Mike’s Best Knockouts below if cartoons are not your thing.

Happy Tuesday.

In the Life of a Headhunter

In The Life of a Headhunter

The daily routine of a Headhunter might just go like this…

Wake. Look outside to verify cloud cover. If sunny, sleep for as long as you want. If not, rollover and sleep until 10am.

10am. Get out of bed. Make coffee. Stare outside for 31 minutes dreaming of sipping trout.

In the Life of a Headhunter
Sighting…

11am. Clean fly line. Tie 3 CDC Cripples and 2 Black ply posted ones too. Pour last cup of Joe.

Noon. Wander to the fly shop for fresh bottle of Frog’s Fanny. The new brush does not matter as you have been rolling same Fanny Brush for 764 days now. It’s really puffed out.

Noon:15. Drive to the river and stare at the water for 13 minutes. See some sign of the big bug. The baetis tricaudatus. Good. Very good.

Noon:30. Now standing in your favorite dry fly run staring. Just little fish and really just a few of them working.

In the Life of a Hedhunter
Standing knee deep…

1:15ish. First cast. Got ’em. First cast is always the best cast. They get more difficult after the first cast. Squeeky Oar Lock told me that 341 times once.

1:15is til dark. Just a blur really. Some fly changing out of necessity. Really just fly replacing as the first one the CDC Wing disintegrated. Second one the poly got too gooey from fish slime. The third bad knot, again.  The fourth is still attached.

634pm. Back to car headed for a Hot Toddy. Heat on high thawing crippled frozen hands. Smiling.

Tomorrow? Let us hope it is overcast and cool again.

Silly Sunday Scenery

Silly Sunday Scenery | Just Duck Edition

A few years back we got flack for posting a banner image during construction of the bridge that followed this bridge.

But since this bridge is gone, history, in the archives…I wonder if we will get beef from folks who regard this locale sacred?

Silly Sunday Scenery is just that.

If you know where this bridge is, or was…don’t tell anyone.

See. The secret is safe.

P.S. I wonder how Lewis and Clark got under this bridge?

On another note. The weather is turning for the worse and we could not be happier.

Hopefully you are spending a little time on the river, this or your own, this coming week. Just a little time left before it may be too cold, football too god, hunting, or honey-do’s. Cast a few more times, duck out of the house one last time…

Trust me. I’m a guide.

Do it.

World Series Missouri River Style

I am personally pulling for the American League team. Being a Mariner’s fan I lean toward the Junior Circuit.

Go Kansas City!

My wife is pulling for the Giants. The Headhunters staff? Mostly San Fransisco fans.

The baseball season has many parallels with the fishing season. They essentially begin and end at the same time. About the time the Boys of Summer  get thinking about Spring Training we get ramped up here on the Missouri River as well getting guide trips out on the Spring Special daily. More on Headhunters Spring Special very soon on this very channel.

So as the MLB season winds down so are most trout fishing operations. Many guides and outfitters around the state are here fun fishing for the remainder of the month and into November. They like streamer and dry fly fishing too!

The difference here on the Mo? Headhunters Fly Shop and Guide Service keeps on fishing. All 12 months. The shop is open every day except for those below 0F. Christmas too. But that is about it. We have a strong minor league, a winter ball/fishing session, 2 Handed Guide Trips for $300 starting on November 1st, and  your Trout Spey Rod Demo center all winter long!

Don’t forget the Free Spey/2 Handed Casting Clinics beginning December 6th.

blog_banner

Here is my take on the World Series Missouri River Style.

I may have written a blog like this in the last 7 years, but really cannot do not care remember.

A Single: The best way to be guided. Just ask any fishing guide.

The Double: Well, two fish on. One for each angler.

A Triple: Not 3 anglers in the boat.

Home Run: Any day off of work and on t river with friends. A Home Run everytime.

Strike-Out: No beer int he cooler

Skipper: Guide of course.

Balk: Landing that Whitey!

Stolen Base: Getting to the boat ramp first!

Suicide Squeeze: Cutting off, low holing your buddy and catching a big brown trout!

Double Play: Forgot your Gink and out of 5X.

Double Switch: Thought you had a big brown trout on the line, bring it to the boat, and it turns out to be a fouled Whitey!

Grand Slam: Catching fish on dries, nymphs, streamers, and a shot of Fireball to finish!

Just a few terms that are crossover from baseball to fishing. What are your favorite terms? Let us know. Don’t forget about the two handed season, the free clinics, and your favorite destination fly shop is open all winter!

November is the New October

November is the New October | Missouri River Chronicles

John wrote an article about the too nice, the way too nice late October weather we have been experiencing and I concur. Let’s move on into the fall, the true fall conditions we have so come to love. Not expect, but certainly love!

So I put together this piece about the future. The future that we can expect, or hope to expect this coming month. The cloud cover is supposed to be more. The temperatures are supposed to be cooler. And the bugs are supposed to be bigger and come more often.

Missouri River October and November Forecast

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac…

OCTOBER 2014: temperature 46° (3° below avg.); precipitation 1.5″ (avg. north, 1″ above south); Oct 1-10: Rain to snow, then sunny, cold; Oct 11-16: Showers, mild; Oct 17-22: Snow showers north, rainy periods south; chilly; Oct 23-31: Rain and snow, then sunny, mild.

NOVEMBER 2014: temperature 41° (4° above avg.); precipitation 0.5″ (0.5″ below avg.); Nov 1-4: Sunny, mild; Nov 5-8: Rain to snow, then sunny; Nov 9-11: Rain and snow, then sunny, cold; Nov 12-18: Sunny, mild; Nov 19-20: Rain and snow showers; Nov 21-26: Sunny, mild; Nov 27-30: Snow showers, cold.

Annual Weather Summary: November 2014 to October 2015

Winter will be colder and slightly drier than normal in the north and milder than normal with near-normal precipitation in the south. The coldest periods will be in late December, early to mid-January, mid- to late February, and early March. Snowfall will be below normal in the east and near normal in the west, with the snowiest periods in early to mid-November, mid- to late December, mid-January, and early and mid- to late March.

November is the New October

Has it been colder and more normal like in years past than it has been this year? Yes, in years past. Has it also been normal with overcast and cooler temps creating more opportunities for fish to look toward the surface? Yep.

The reality is that it has been both and will continue to be. The snow and inclement weather will arrive. In November? Maybe. Reading the info above from the Old Farmer’s Almanac I don’t know what to believe. I do believe winter will visit at some point.

The big bugs have not shown yet. Will they come? I don’t know. I suspect they will. The water temps will continue to plunge as fall, or winter, may actually come. The streamer bite is becoming better everyday. Honest. Nymphing is just fine, per usual.

November is the New October

Guide trips available all month long. The November month. We get into that 2 Handed game as well. $300 Spey Trips until the end of December. Craig Trout Camp is open all winter long with lodging here in Craig. Call us for anything you may need from 2 Handed Rods, to lodging, to guides, to shuttles, to our always free coffee.

The average snowfall in November is 8 inches. The average precip total is 0.59 inches. The average high air temp is 43F with the low coming in at 23F. Much cooler than November. Although October is historically cooler than it has been.

Swinging is good in November. Real good.

Tough to choose for most between the rhythm of the swing or the beat of the dry fly bite.

What do you want to do?

I just want to be ready with dry fly rod in hand wading out to my favorite BWO slick.

Best Montana streamer fishing

It’s nice. A little Too Nice.

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]A beautiful fall day yesterday in what was – I assume – record high temperatures. Nearly 80 degrees in North Central, and not a breath of wind. Too sunny for a big hatch, and the water is still too warm for Baetis. If you’re hunting for BWO’s on the Missouri River, think November. You’ll have the place to yourself. Until then, Pseudos and small caddis are the fare.

Mark, myself and Zak Dalton of Sage/RIO spent the day tossing streamers (and a few dries) on the Missouri. A few slower spells, but all in all a great day with plenty of fish in the net. A few good ones.

Our key to streamers yesterday? Slow – like in a coma – retrieves. We don’t like short strikes. The best flies were the usual Skiidish/Sparkle/Kreelex, etc. stuff.

Today we’re finally getting some clouds/rain. In fact I’m walking out the door right now. After that it’ll be back to that “too nice” weather pattern for another week. Today’s the day…[/vc_column_text][us_image image=”7119″ size=”full” link=”” onclick=”lightbox”][us_image image=”7120″ size=”full” link=””][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Tuesday in October

Tuesday in October | Red Shafted Flicker

Northern Flicker | Red Shafted Flicker

Flickers are fairly large woodpeckers with a slim, rounded head, slightly downcurved bill, and long, flared tail that tapers to a point.

Flickers appear brownish overall with a white rump patch that’s conspicuous in flight and often visible when perched. The undersides of the wing and tail feathers are bright yellow, for eastern birds, or red, in western birds. With a closer look you’ll see the brown plumage is richly patterned with black spots, bars, and crescents.

Northern Flickers spend lots of time on the ground, and when in trees they’re often perched upright on horizontal branches instead of leaning against their tails on a trunk. They fly in an up-and-down path using heavy flaps interspersed with glides, like many woodpeckers.

Look for flickers in open habitats near trees, including woodlands, edges, yards, and parks. In the West you can find them in mountain forests all the way up to treeline.

Silly Sunday Scenery

Silly Sunday Scenery

Looking for the rise form.

Eric Mondragon and angler Dave out for a day of fly fishing on Montana’s Missouri River.

The fall is a good time to get out.

Are you going to get out another time before we put on our snowy pajamas?

You should. Enjoy this Sunday. Fish if you can.

Time to Swing

Time to Swing?

The days of Autumn are here and the daylight becomes about 4 minutes less per day.  The hours I work at the shop limit fishing time before and after work. The other day I thought I would get out for a couple of hours before my shift and work on my spey casting and maybe hook a fish or two.

Armed with the Sage Method 6119, RIO Scandi 390, and a Olive/White Dali Lama I headed up stream from Craig. Around 8:30 I entered the river with a nice 17 mph SW wind blowing down stream.

After a few warm up casts that placed my anchor point everywhere but the right spot I managed to throw some line to my intended target. Part of my scouting trip included seeing if the weeds would be too much to swing a streamer. Not at all is the answer.  With few exceptions the weed flew off during the cast.

Placing my anchor point in the weeds was my only concern at this point. Even the fish decided to cooperate by hammering the Dali. I prefer a longer two-handed rod like like the Method 6126 for throwing line with ease. The Method 6119 makes me a better caster as the timing needs to be right for long casts, but when a 18″ fish climbs on board the bend in the rod is similar to a 6wt single handed rod.

For the two-handers in the audience the river is shaping up for swinging. If wading is your only option it’s another tool to get that streamer out there. Headhunters has plenty of two-handed demo rods from Sage, Orvis, Thomas & Thomas, and Echo to get you into the swing. Stop by the shop and the staff will help with equipment questions, hot streamers, and recommendations for areas to swing on the river. Don’t miss our Two-Handed Spey clinics this winter, for information visit our web site or call the shop.

Fall colors in full effect.

The non-local locals are here in full effect.

Streamer fishing? Getting closer to full throttle.

Dry fly fishing? Not as much, but some afternoons are pretty killer.

Be there. Be here. Be present.

Then, and only then can you participate or even inundate yourself in Montana’s Missouri River Fall.

Fall Fishing Montana's Missouri River

Fall Fishing Montana’s Missouri River

It is great. The big bugs are not here yet, but the dry fly fishing can and has been pretty good.

Different stretches of the river can hold bugs for the day, good hatches and success on the dry fly. Posted up and getting them.

Other reaches? Not as good.

Is there any way to tell which stretch will fish well today? I do not have the Genie in the Bottle but I can guess. And I do. And sometimes I guess wrong.

You? How are your guessing skills?

Fish to your strong points. Fish the water that you are comfortable with if you like to catch them or at least have an opportunity to get them on the dry fly.

Blind fishing has been good to as you have been reading the past couple weeks on this very blog.

RIO Line Company and SAGE Rods are here for their annual trip and it has been a ball already. They love to toss the streamer and then when the dries show…it is time to get out the SAGE Accel Rod and have at them. For streamers this week they have been throwing the SAGE Salt saltwater rod in both 5 and 6 weights. We have them both in stock and we also have a 5, 6, ad 7 wt. Accel in stock for demo purposes. We are really getting into the Accel. Come in today and take one out for a test drive. It is awesome.

The weather ahead looks sunny. Will it have some clouds in it? Will it be good for dry fly fishing? Only you can guess.

[forecast]

You do have to be here to really get a feel for what is happening. You gotta go to know.

So we always go.

We really do love this time frame on the Missouri River and let us know if we can help in any way for the future. We are here at the shop from 7am til 8pm daily for all your river needs like lodging, guiding, demo rods, flies, coffee, free high speed info, and much, much more!

It is damn pretty here on the Mo’.

Eagles, Brown Trout, and you?

The fall colors are happening and the we just love the shorter days, cooler nights, and clean smelling air.

The weeds are fading, the bugs are hatching, and the fish are rising.

Lots of Eagles around the river.

Just like this one.

And, I like birds.

Happy Friday. Hope your weekend is awesome.

Headhuntersflyshop.com is back!

Website down for a day. Malware invaded the server and fouled us up, or down.

Lost a couple weeks of posts but seems to be stable now and we are back.

Just like rising trout. You can put them down, but they want to come back…

Sorry for the confusion and we will get you back to square one with a fishing report and more.

John will be cleaning things up in the next couple days as you may have a feeling of Deja Vu. It is October, not September. You are not dreaming.

Thanks for reading…honest.

Autumn Leaves. Freddie Hubbard.

Autumn Leaves. Freddie Hubbard.

If you know this tune you will love Freddie Hubbard playing this most important of this non-American Jazz Standard written by the French and the English lyrics added by Johnny Mercer in ’47. Autumn Leaves played by American horn player Freddie Hubbard is one of my favorite fall tunes.

Enjoy this one today. It’s long and it’s perfect.

Close your eyes and dream of the Mo.

Friday Foto Eagle Edtion today this Friday the 12th of September.

Snow the last couple days. Sun today.

Look at  the weather and if you are of the fair weather type of angler you may want to come out sooner than later.

In previous years we have seen too warm a fall. Let’s hope we have something closer to normal. A little cool weather can get us off to the right start this fall.

Cross your fishy smelling fingers.

Have a great weekend and a great Friday!

Swedes in Montana. Again.

Swedes in Craig MT. Again.

Ulf and his cast of thousands was in Craig for a couple visits on the Montana tour.

Then Stefan was back in Craig with Martin again for his 5th visit. I think.

We see a number of Japanese guests on the river every year.

Simon straight outta the UK was here for his second stay in as many years.

The Canadians visit often. Really quite often as they escape the cold in the winter and take their fishing up one notch leaving the Bow behind and drifting down to the Mo frequently. Too many of these guys to mention but Peter immediately comes to mind. International destination? Yep.

Swedes in Craig MT. Again.

Visitors from the four corners of the earth come on out to prove themselves on the world class Missouri River.

Do they fish the Madison when they come? Yes. How about the Henry’s Fork. Yep. The spring creeks in Livingston MT. Sure. Do they love the Missouri River more than the rest? Certainly.

Consistency is key for year after year successes and we can definitely boast that trend. A facet of our great river that many cannot claim. None really.

Am I biased? Oh quite certainly.

I am so surprised at my amazement of the trout that come to the fly, come to the hand on this river. Year after year I could not be happier that I am able to be here, here fly fishing Montana’s Missouri River. A river that you can hon your fly fishing skills on. Shoot, improve if you want. It is a river that never gets too easy. It is a river that is built for all skill sets. It is a a resource that all can enjoy whether you are fishing or not.

Beginners to experts enjoy each and every twist and bend of the Missouri River. We have a couple more months of strong visitors here in Craig. I’m sure we will see anglers from all over the states and some regions outside of the U. S. of A. Bring it.

We love meeting guests new to the river and to Montana. If we have already met we look forward to seeing you again and if not we certainly look forward to greeting you here in Craig.
