A break in the weather

A break in the weather

Fishing weather has returned, albeit temporarily, for the weekend and front end of the week.

Although we have been loving the snow. A good feel of winter with snow falling most of the last week. And the week ahead looks like more of the same. More snow on the way.

More snow on the ground this winter means more water in the rivers this coming summer. The entire state, save for the Missouri River, was in really tough shape this last year. Not good at all. We squeaked by with average flows. Nothing high at all. Will we have the high water this coming year? Nobody knows. And if anybody tells you something…well you can believe whatever you want.

All we know is that we always prefer the more water option over the less water option every time. Big water beats the low water hand every time. We won’t know the outcome of the winter until later winter early spring period. Then we can get a handle on the winter precipitation and make some sort of random educated guess.

November and December here in our region, east of the Continental Divide, seem to be consistent in the early winter snows. The last several years we have flirted with real winter until we turn the last page of the calendar.

Then it seems as though winter vanishes. I want a real winter from Santa this year. I’m sure most of us embroiled in the fishing industry and those of you who love to fish Montana would wholeheartedly agree. Hands down.

Leave your note to Santa next to the milk and cookies.

So back to the Sunday Report here on the Headhunters Blog. Decent fishing out there. A break in the weather yesterday and today including Monday. Snow flurries could happen at any moment on any given day.

The boat ramps are pretty safe. Check the end destination before launching. Or check with us. We generally know the condition of the ramps.

The shelf ice is not and at all. There is some out there but not the terrible dangerous shelf ice that can make getting to the water on some occasions difficult.

Water temperatures are holding at 35.5F with water levels at 3330cfs. Cold for sure. Put on your wool socks before you wade into that ice bucket of a river. No slush in the river yet. The air temps have to get in the zero range for some time to make the upper river slushy or even ice-bergy.

Flies for nymphers? Pink. Flies for swingers? On the smaller side in both the natural colors or un-natural color ways. Both pretty effective. The patterns of the winter so far have been on the bugger side of life. Zonkers still on the radar. Leeches not a terrible choice.

See you on the water this week. Shop open daily @ 8am.

Snow Day

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We should be waking up to an all-day snowstorm in Craiglandia this Monday morning. Sunday was a beautiful, almost windless day on the Missouri River. I spent it doing something I just don’t do that much anymore in the winter. Fishing from the boat with streamers and nymphs.

Sam and Eric from Simms Fishing came up from Bozeman to get a little trout fix before the big storm. Fishing was OK, not great by any means. If it was cold and windy I would tell you it sucked. But it wasn’t and it didn’t. We caught some very nice Rainbow’s on streamers (a couple on nymphs), a few Browns, and did it all with single handers. We saw the two-handed crowd out there. They were swinging in the usual spots.

Best rig for us was a Foxy Clouser/small bugger combo fished on an intermediate tip (Ninch/Sara/Braden can show the right little buggers). That’s all that really worked. The angler in the front of the boat ruled, as it allowed him to do a slow-swing and retrieve. Most of our fish came on that. The guy in the back pretty much got hosed.

That slow swing and retrieve is very similar to what we do on foot with our spey rods. Probably was a good day for the two-handed crowd.

Headhunters probably won’t be open today (Monday), depending on the road conditions. Julie will probably show up at some point to answer calls and count all the money, but if you need shuttles, please call in advance. If there is no answer give Julie a shout at 406-868-5473.

REPORTS

Mostly heard good but not great reports over the weekend. Everyone seemed happy, and as mentioned above, the nice weather will have something to do with that. Similar streamer reports from the Dam to Pelican. Some fish rising Saturday, but we didn’t see much surface action today. Definitely some anglers about, and a few stayed the weekend at the Craig Trout Camp.

After this storm blows through we are hoping for some nice temperatures and more good fishing conditions. A little increase in the flows would be nice. Ice fisherman are probably hoping for a good arctic blast so they can go fill some buckets up with Perch. We’re still finding them in the river as well. Inch says he talked to someone who swung up several on the Spey rod the other day. Perch an the Spey. Who-da-thunk-it.

ROADS AND RAMPS

Be careful on the highway if you do decide to venture to the river today. Last night saw some pretty good rain from Wolf Creek to Cascade while I was driving home from work/fishing. That should turn into a nice sheet of ice that will be hidden under that fresh snow. Yikes! And take care on the ramps as well the next two days.

The End of the Hunt

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]If you live outside of Montana, you think Montana’s are all about trout fishing. They are, but it’s hunting that really motivates many (most?) Montanan’s. Big game season is over, sans a few shoulder season and damage control hunts. Upland birds are nearing the end (Jan. 1), which will leave the shivering and lonely waterfowl hunters, who will have a few more weeks in January.

By all accounts, it’s been a good hunt for most. I’ve seen plenty of nice Elk and Deer in the back of trucks, being drug to the road, on Facebook and Instagram, and in the local news. Big game hunters had some of the cold and nasty weather they need to be successful. Some years we don’t at all.

Upland bird hunters had a great season, at least in our area. Excellent weather for the most part as well. And it looks like those who chase them right to the end will have some pretty good conditions to finish the season with.

Duck hunters are in the midst of it, and from all reports local hunting has been pretty good. Not enough super nasty weather, I suspect, but those with access to good fields are having success. Julie and I were in Bozeman the other day and the Three Forks area was black with birds.

While I don’t hunt all that much anymore, I do occasionally hit the field with local guide Michael Kowalski and haul my camera along. Yesterday we enjoyed what will likely be my last day in the field with his uncle John Kowalski, legendary local hunting and fishing guide. As well as guiding fly fishers in the area, both of these outdoorsmen guide upland bird hunting for PRO Outfitters in Helena. PRO runs what is likely the best upland bird hunting operation in Montana. Probably beyond.

Here’s a few images for those interested in bird hunting on this Saturday morning. Montana is beautiful.[/vc_column_text][us_grid columns=”3″ post_type=”attachment” items_quantity=”” images=”15954,15955,15956,15957,15958,15959″ orderby=”post__in” items_gap=”” items_layout=”gallery_default” img_size=”us_600_600_crop” overriding_link=”popup_post_image” breakpoint_1_cols=”3″ breakpoint_2_width=”768px” breakpoint_3_width=”480px” breakpoint_2_cols=”3″ breakpoint_3_cols=”2″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

A bit of snow yesterday. Not much stuck on the ground. Sunday and Monday including the rest next week of may bring a bit more.

The weekend looks good for those who want to come on out. Light winds with nice daytime temperatures will let you fish without too much pain. Shoot, with temps at or near 40F you should be just fine.

Weekend Re-Cap here in Craig Montana

Weekend Re-Cap here in Craig Montana

Monday morning here in Craig Montana.

A fun weekend here on the Mighty MO. Our first of several Free Spey Clinics went off without a hitch on Saturday. A few cancellations left us with a smaller group of about 15. Ninch, Sara, Beth, Dewey, John and Mark instructed the enthusiastic spey gang as they cast away until the late afternoon.

Weekend Re-Cap here in Craig Montana
Spey Rod demo’s @ Headhunters Fly Shop from Sage, Orvis, Echo, T & T

Most had not cast a Spey Rod before Saturday. All could get by after completing their first spey casting session. A couple brought their own rods and the remainder of the class used Headhunters extensive selection of demo spey rods.

We have the Sage Accel in 6wt, the 6126 and 7126 Methods are popular, and the Trout Spey Sage rods from 2wt all the way through 5wt.  The Orvis Clearwater is a fan favorite as well as the rods from Echo. We have the Echo Glass which is a great seller.  The 12′ 4″ 6 wt, 12′ 9″ 7wt as well as the 10′ 8″ 4 wt  and 11′ 6wt switch rods. The Echo 3 and Echo TR were enjoyed by the group. The  T & T DNA rounds out rest of our demo stock.

This vast selection of spey and switch rods is not matched any where in Montana. I counted 26 demo spey rods in the rack at the shop. And, and we have all of the lines you may need in the demo fleet too. Lines from RIO in both Skagit and Scandinavian versions. Airflo and lines from OPST are both very popular as well. All to try out on your own rod if you wish. Finding the right line for you, for your type of water, and for your style is of utmost importance. Headhunters is here t oasis you in that battle.

Happy guests at the Spey Clinic this weekend. If you are interested in the three remaining clinics you might want to give us a call and get your name on the list. Check out more info about these always filled free spey clinics.

Chatted with a couple of fellers from Kalispell after they floated the river on Saturday. Nymphing wa their game and the flies of choice included many pink flies. A Caviar Scud, Rainbow Czech, Amex, FB Ray in grey or pink and a few eats on the Zebra too. They said they enjoyed the lack of traffic. They will be visiting a few times this winter to see not only the sun here in lonesome Craig and to catch a few. They enjoyed the Craig Trout Camp Brown Cabin for a mere $125/night. Dinner at Joe’s Bar with a few beers. A perfect winter weekend.

Get a HH Gift Card for any amount.

Not as many anglers on Sunday as the wind blew about 100mph. Not really that windy, but it sure seemed like it. Partly cloudy and windy. The week ahead looks warmer again which generally means more wind.

We got the Christmas lights up at the shop on Friday. It ’tis the season. We are into it too. We do love the holidays. Christmas boxes going out the door daily as on-line fly fishing shoppers are getting their  family members and friends killer gifts from Headhunters Fly Shop.

A great gift for your favorite angler whether he of she be a Montana waters fan or not…is the benchmark of Gift Cards. The Headhunters Gift Card available in any amount. Why not get your sweetie a guide trip for 2016, a step in the positive direction for a fly rod, or a nice selection of flies for their upcoming ’16 Missouri River trip.

Having a ball in Craig Montana. Looking forward to the new year. Many returning guests booking their lodging and guide trips for next season. Open daily for any of your needs whether it be shopping, spey clinic booking, or getting your name on the books for the year ’16.

Happy Monday to you all!

Maybe this is why we live in Montana

A map of the 4G LTE coverage in Montana.

You can clearly see that Montana is not covered. We actually do have cell coverage here in Montana. All those giant Montana cities, of which a couple peak at the 100K population mark, have some pretty decent coverage. But if you like to watch the Sunday ball game on your phone…you may not like living in Montana.

A little misleading, my use of this image, but I think you feel me here.

While we complain about the lack of communication speed and options here in central Montana, and certainly in downtown Craig, we are not completely disgruntled about the lack of cell coverage.

Many clients enjoy the lack of cell signal here on the Missouri River.

No coverage? No ringing phone? No worries.

Although we do have the only cell coverage at a fly shop in Craig with our cell booster. Izaak’s has it too. That is why you see the stack of anglers sitting on our porch in the late afternoons. Checking in with reality.

While reality is difficult to hide from…Craig Montana offers a bit of real life solace.

And we dig it.

PINK is in. The nymphing anglers we spoke to yesterday were all over it.

So were the trout. Pink is the color. We are headlong into December and the remainder of 2015 including the first several months of 2016 will be covered in PINK.

We agree. Headhunters is full of Pink too.

Think Pink with the Pink Panther.

Highs in the mid-40’s today not he water. Some wind will accompany the somewhat sunny skies. Some out there swinging, some tossing the goober with pink under it.

Good football today.

What are you doing? Plan to spend a little time not he water this holiday season. It truly is a wonderful time of year.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Friday Foto December Snow Edition

Friday Foto December Snow Edition

All is well here fishing Montana’s Missouri River.

Friday Foto today here on the Headhunters Fly Shop Blog.

Trout Spey Casting Clinic led by John tomorrow. SOLD OUT. The next one coming in January.

The snow pretty much melted yesterday with the roads all but bare and dry. Even the secondary dirt roads have thawed. The boat ramps should be all good too.

Looks like a nice weekend ahead of us. If the damn wind stays to a digestible level. Super windy Thursday. Not enough to keep anglers off of the water though. The SW wind leaves ample shores in the lee available for fishing.

See you for a coffee break at the shop this weekend. Open at 8am daily.

Welcome to the Missouri River December

Welcome to the Missouri River December

December 1st. All is well. Cold as it should be.

A common winter question at the shop is “Do you really fish during the winter? When the weather is like this? Really?

Oh yeah. And we are not the only ones. Lots of local and regional anglers visit the Missouri River during the off season. Great Falls and Helena residents including Butte, Bozeman, Whitefish, and even Spokane and Billings don’t blink about heading over for a day, or three.

A short drive for most. A large reward for all. As I stated yesterday we are into one of our slowest periods of the year. Not fishing wise. Although it is not red hot. More like Snow, White, Hot.

Missouri River December Weather

Welcome to the Missouri River DecemberCold. Mostly cold and somewhat windy. When the sun is high is does not mean slower fishing. But, but the fish do not mind the lower grayer skies either. I prefer the latter. It just feels fishier when the clouds obscure the sun.

Keep in mind while the mercury reads 24F, the high and bright sun will make it feel a balmy 37F.

The wind is the variable that really, truly, nobody is a fan of. If is blowing the fishing conditions can be questionable. Always give us a call before you head out for the current conditions in Craig.

Average daily December high temperature is 35F with the low being 15F.  Average snowfall is 9 inches with the average precipitation coming in at 0.55 inches.

The upshot is cold weather and tough fishing conditions. Or for those who like the solace of the river in December…bring it.

Missouri River December (Non)Hatches

Kind of none. Some BWO’s around and some midges. More like the pink nymph fly hatch. Or a streamer Kreelex hatch. That is about it. Very little dry fly action. So, we go to the bobber and the Trout Spey Rod or a slowly stripped streamer on a single handed rod.

Welcome to Missouri River December
Lots of winter ahead of us!

So what do I do? Find that soft winter water. Most of the anglers that arrive at the shop in the morning get the same explanation about water types. We constantly hear bad reports from those trying to play the summer game. Meaning that they are fishing in good looking hopper type water. The faster, sexy type of water. Stay away from that stuff in the winter. It is no good. There are not any fish in that ind of water. The water temps are in the Hi 30’s for the remainder of the month and the fish do not hang out there. Period. So if you want some good winter nymphing action find the slow and soggy water.

It is more a question of where. That is what we are getting at here. Where. The slow pond like water is the right stuff. Where you would not fish in the spring, summer, or fall. The slower inside bends with some structure. Or no structure. Look for the most boring water you can find and fish it.

Trout Spey is King

We love to throw the 2 handed rod in the winter months. With the advent of smaller trout size spey/switch rods the Missouri River is a fantastic resource to learn a new game. And we have them all. We are the education location for all things trout spey. With well more than a dozen demo trout spey rods in stock we are Montana’s Trout Spey destination. Demo lines at Headhunters as well with the entire range of Skagit and Scandi lines.

The Missouri River has a ton of killer swing runs at your disposal. You will see fellers out there practicing, fishing, swinging. Landing fish too. Depending on the water depth and speed you can either attach a lightly weighted pattern, a  heavily weighted pattern, or an unweighted fly to the end of your switch rod. The fish can be anywhere on the swing, or twitch, or jig. Fish it, change it, strip it, swing it.

Craig Trout Camp Open All Year!

Open all year long!
Open all year long!

Craig Trout Camp is open all year long. We never close the most popular properties on the Missouri River The good news is the discounted off season price. Rainbow and Brown Cabins rent for $125/night and the Craig House starts at $250/night. Why stay anywhere else? Come out for the weekend. Fish, stay, relax.

Missouri River Off Season is Killer!

Lots of reasons to fish the off season. Low population of anglers. That is all I need to hear. But some like to catch a few trout for their troubles. No problem there either. Good fishing for those over-sized Rainbows. Stop in any time for answers, questions, coffee, a ton of BS, Christmas gifts, sale times, conversations…any and all.

Headhunters Fly Shop is your only daily fly shop on the Missouri River. We are here for you, the all seasons angler. And we love December!

It certainly is if you like the snow. Snowed hard yesterday morning and made the roads a bit dicey. Cleared up in the afternoon with calm winds and overcast skies.

But the 20F air temp kept most off the river.

Lonely out on the Mo when the snow flies. And sometimes the wind blows too. Not quiet as cool.

And the wind the last couple days, meaning all week long, has been atrocious. Gusts over 50mph on Tuesday evening. Wednesday was no peach either with the snow showers. Today it is supposed to be a bit calmer. Fishable weather? Maybe.

The worse the weather, the fewer the number of anglers.

Not always a good idea to float the river. But always a good idea to get out there and cruise around with a  cup of coffee and a fly pole. The wind can keep you shoreside. And sometimes it should.

This weekend ahead looks like a winner. A great weekend to sneak out before the holiday ahead. Hopefully the entire week is awesome.

Silly Sunday Scenery

Silly Sunday Scenery

Howling again on Saturday! Blowing pretty hard. Overcast in the afternoon may have made the bite heat up.

Certainly a better post lunch byte than during the morning session.

Those trout out there look real, real, healthy. Big dogs.

Get in on some of the fatty bows on the Mo this coming week. A good mix of anglers here this weekend from Boise, C’DA, Bozeman, Calgary, Helena, Great Falls, and who could forget Havre.

Experiencing the trout dream daily here in central Montana.

The landscape is nearly all brown and tan ad shades thereof. Hence the B & W image today. Really the only color in our personal landscape is the Rainbow Trout.

That in itself will get us through the winter.

Tying Knots – Friday Photo Essay

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Going through the last 12+months photos recently and realized something. I have a lot of pictures of my friends tying knots. Lots. You’re probably asking yourself, “why in the hell would you take a picture of someone tying a knot? Why not casting, or a grip ‘n grin, or someone drinking a beer?”[/vc_column_text][us_image image=”15316″ onclick=”lightbox”][vc_column_text]That’s what I was thinking too. But then I realized there are a couple reasons I have a lot of knot-tying images:

  1. I like the act of rigging up. Getting ready. Watching someone standing by themselves in a river. Choosing the right fly. Making sure that knot won’t fail. Probably the most focused an angler is over the course of the day. Certainly the quietest.
  2. We must spend a hell of a lot of time tying knots!

I remember my high school football coach telling our team that during the course of an average football game, players actually “played” for 6 minutes (I think he was pointing out how out of shape we were). In todays passing oriented game, I’ve read it’s more like 11 minutes. 13 if Russell Wilson is scrambling around.

It made me wonder how many minutes of our day we spend tying knots. For guides, it’s every single minute you’re not rowing or netting a fish. So lots.

But for the rest of you, I wonder. 1 hour? More?

So, here is – without a doubt – the best knot tying photo essay you’re likely to see this week, featuring my very favorite knot tying images. Some great anglers as well…[/vc_column_text][us_grid columns=”4″ post_type=”attachment” items_quantity=”” images=”15321,15320,15319,15322,15323,15324,15325,15326,15333,15328,15329,15330,15327,15331,15332,15334″ orderby=”post__in” items_gap=”4px” items_layout=”gallery_default” img_size=”us_600_600_crop” overriding_link=”popup_post_image” breakpoint_1_cols=”4″ breakpoint_2_width=”768px” breakpoint_3_width=”480px” breakpoint_2_cols=”4″ breakpoint_3_cols=”2″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Veterans Day

Celebrating all veterans today November 11th.

We honor, remember, and celebrate the service of all US Armed Services in peace and during war.

Today we honor the bravery and service of all veterans.

We at Headhunters keep these men and women in our hearts and minds all year long.

Including today.

Craig Trout Camp Open All Winter

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The entire Craig Trout Camp at Headhunters will be open for the entire winter for those who spend just as much time fishing the Missouri during swing season. The Rainbow & Brown, Craig House and Sutton Place will all be available at discounted winter rates from Nov. 15 – March 15.

  • Rainbow & Brown – $125/nt (2)
  • Sutton Place – $200 (4)
  • Craig House – $250 (4) – $350 (6)

Now you probably don’t have to book a cabin well in advance. But, we’ve had some of the cabins open the last few years, and our booking crew will tell you that there are times when everyone seems to try and book. Even in the winter. That’s why we have them open! So if you and your buddies have a plan, book it. It’s easy to change it later.

Also, remember that dining options get a little limited around here in the winter. Your best bet is to bring your own grub. The Craig House and Sutton Place have full kitchens. The Rainbow and Brown have mini-fridge/microwave setups. We do have BBQ’s that you can use to grill up some steaks – or Marks fav – hot dogs!

Call the shop to reserve or if you have any Q’s. 1-877-379-3597[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Womens Spey Clinic

Women’s Spey Clinic

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Headhunters manager Sara Roholt and guide Beth Hood held our first women’s spey clinic this weekend. As expected from these two, the clinic was a success and all who attended learned a thing or two about spey casting, rigging and equipment from these 2 spey-junkies.

Sara and Beth are on the water all winter throwing their spey rods, so this isn’t a social experience. These gals know what they’re talking about.

Former Headhunters staffer and Bozeman photographer Jess McGlothlin was also in attendance, and provided these great photos. click to enlarge[/vc_column_text][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][us_image image=”15200″ onclick=”lightbox”][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_column_text]

ON WATER

Saturday was on the cool side, and excessively windy. The girls chosen spot (at Ben McNinch and Nick Stipech’s pad) proved to be the least windy spot on the river. An excellent choice.

Sara and Beth followed our standard clinic protocol, starting with an hour-plus of classroom explaining the gear and terminology, followed by on water casting instruction. Sara ran the in-classroom session, as her knowledge of equipment proved invaluable. Beth headed up the on-water casting portion, and worked on fundamentals starting with the final launch stroke.

Sara thought that most attendees were interested in applying spey techniques to local trout fishing in Montana, as opposed to future Steelhead trips. We think that’s great. Get out there and swing up some Montana natives!

“It’s exciting to watch a group of women of varying skill levels come together to learn something new! Sara and Beth were excellent teachers, and it’s hard to imagine a better setting for the new Montana Spey angler to put their new skills to use.” – Jess McGlothlin

[/vc_column_text][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][us_grid columns=”2″ post_type=”attachment” items_quantity=”” images=”15201,15202″ orderby=”post__in” items_gap=”” items_layout=”gallery_default” img_size=”us_600_600_crop” overriding_link=”popup_post_image” breakpoint_1_cols=”2″ breakpoint_2_width=”768px” breakpoint_3_width=”480px” breakpoint_2_cols=”4″ breakpoint_3_cols=”2″][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_column_text]

EQUIPMENT FEEDBACK

Because we receive a lot of feedback about gear at our clinics, we were looking forward to a women’s only perspective. Sara’s compiled feedback was that the group really enjoyed the Orvis Clearwater Spey (first) and the Sage Method (second). Not as popular were the Echo Glass Spey/Switch and new Redington Chromer. We’re receiving a bunch of Echo TR’s this week, and I would expect them to be as popular as the Orvis.

Very interesting. The Clearwater (med) and Method (fast) are two completely different rod actions, but two of our favorite. No surprises there. The Echo Glass Spey and Switch rods are shop and customer favorites, but we have always heard negative comments from the ladies. We attribute this to the extra weight of these fiberglass rods. Men seem not to notice, but women most definitely do. The new Redington Chromer has received “meh” reviews from our staff, and from this group apparently.[/vc_column_text][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][us_grid columns=”2″ post_type=”attachment” items_quantity=”” images=”15204,15205″ orderby=”post__in” items_gap=”” items_layout=”gallery_default” img_size=”us_600_600_crop” overriding_link=”popup_post_image” breakpoint_1_cols=”2″ breakpoint_2_width=”768px” breakpoint_3_width=”480px” breakpoint_2_cols=”4″ breakpoint_3_cols=”2″][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_column_text]

SKAGIT vs SCANDI

The group used both Skagit and Scandi lines, and Skagit prevailed as the easiest and most enjoyable. We all know that Skagit lines are a bit easier to throw. The ladies group would also agree more fun to throw. They definitely do more of the work for you, which is nice.

Sara, Beth and Headhunters also provided some warm soup, veggie trays, chardonnay and I heard there was some Bailey’s floating around. All appreciated from the sounds of it. It was a little windy and cool Saturday.

MORE CLINICS?

Will we hold more ladies Spey Clinics? Up to Sara and Beth, but I would expect that we will. If you’re interested I suggest harassing Sara at the shop.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Better streamer reports coming in daily. The subsurface strippers are having success. Swingers too. Smaller unweighted patterns are getting bit. A dry line or an intermediate tip will suffice.

Not many bugs to be found. Not enough. A slow BWO season for sure.

A good weekend to fish. We have lodging and guides available. Shuttles for sure. Handwarmers, rental boats, and all the winter gear for those who like to stay warm.

Missouri River November Fishing Forecast

Missouri River November Fishing Forecast
Fishing the lower Missouri River

November brings lots of things. It does not bring people. Quiet waters. Fish tom Dam to Cascade with some nice peaceful lack of pressure.

BWO’s should last until Thanksgiving. Some midges around too. Hot flies? Parachutes, cripples, emerges, soft hackles, and spinners.

The streamer bite is picking up. That is good for the past several weeks, the streamer season, has not been all that terrific. The swing bite is picking up too. Both are worth doing for the next several months.

The nymphing is of course very good. Short leashing in the lower water levels, as we are below 3K, is outstanding. Find the deep green and toss it in. Still finding fish in the obvious sexy water spots. That will all end when the water temps dip below the 40F mark. But enjoy until then. We still have til about that TDAy for those temps to hold.

Headhunters Fly Shop and Guide Service Winter Hours

Open daily 8am-6pm. New Winter Hours. We will roll with these hours through March ’16. Open 7 days a week. Everyday but Christmas. Lodging available everyday, and night, including Christmas. Stop in for that winter time free coffee on your way through, for a chat, for those Christmas presents for all your fly fishing friends. Pick yourself up something nice too…you deserve it.

We love the late fall and early winter period. Quiet. Perfect. Slow. Snow. Overcast. Occasionally windy. More often calm.

November is good.

Check out this Spey Video here.

Snow on Tuesday. Wednesday too…

Snow on Tuesday. Wednesday too…

Started snowing this morning. Still snowing this evening.

About 3″ on the ground. More falling from the skies.

Wednesday some snow in the morning. Later in the day?

Very few anglers on the water Tuesday.

Wednesday? Some predicted north winds. Switching around to the south in the afternoon. Call the shop for a wind update if you are local and have that awful cold fall fishing disease going around.

Silly Sunday Scenery

Silly Sunday Scenery

November 1st. A good month.

Nobody around. Rising fish.

Craig Ghost Town.

Just drift boats and out of work guides.

Perfect.

Above is Darcy Richardson of Fernie B.C. He and his brother Darren see us annually after Darcy has finished his guide season on the Elk River. Darren said they will be coming at least another 10 years for fantastic late October fly flicking. Dry fly and short leash will fill the day. At it does. Streamer fishing if you like.

They both loved the Sage ONE Trout Spey 2wt for soft hackled flies.

Now they have headed back north to the snows of Canada. No snow here. Shortly? Maybe.

See you wandering the back alleys of Craig.

Or on a lonely dry fly flat.

Steelhead Witch

Spooky Saturday!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Popular on Headhunters social media yesterday, our friend the Wicked Witch of the Grande Ronde is using her powers to try and skate up a Steelhead. The way the wind is blowing on the Mo’ this weekend, it seems as though the army of flying monkeys might be on approach. Let’s hope not. Have a safe Halloween with the kids and/or adults. See you in November.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Max Mattioli Fly Fishing Guide

Local Boy Wins!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We rarely highlight any of our guides, we think they’re all awesome. A professional crew that does a huge number of trips every year, with smiles that last until mid-September (mine used to last until early June).

If NFGuide Max Mattioli looks familiar, it’s because you saw him behind the counter in the shop during the 2014 season. A Helena native, Max was thrown into the guide mix kinda-sudden-like this year. Pretty rare that Headhunters rolls a complete rookie guide, but we rolled with Max. He responded like a boss and had a tremendous year, doing over 100 guide trips (he’s still going strong), and receiving great feedback from his customers.

The above shot is Max and client with a slab Rainbow last week on the Missouri River. Dialed in for sure, Max is. You can check out his Instagram feed to see some great photos of trout and other species he’s wrangled from local waters.

Wait to go, Rookie.

If you’re interested in booking Max for this fall, winter or next year call the shop. Most of his clients from this year are doing the same.

A second look at the SAGE Pulse

Second look at the SAGE Pulse

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Second look at the SAGE Pulse. One of the newest SAGE fly rods to come out the Autumn of ’15.

At Headhunters Fly Shop and across the industry this rod has come out of the gate strong.

Well received this easy caster and understandably efficient fish fighter is a great rod for the Missouri River. On a river where we can all agree that the proper fishing behaviors should result in actually catching the fish the SAGE Pulse is the All Around Winner.

A number of rods have found their way out the front door and the clear HH Staff Choice coming into the fall leads us to believe that the Pulse may be around for awhile. And why not.

SAGE Pulse
Great for dries, nymphs or streamers!

The buzz around this rod starts with the easy feel in hand. It just feels right, right out of the tube. The second thing you notice is the ease of casting. Made of legendary Graphite IIIe the SAGE Pulse feels like it was made for your casting stroke. Yes, designed specifically for you.

I know that is a reach but the forgiving nature of the Pulse allows you to become intimate with this rod immediately. The third reason the Pulse is becoming a fan favorite is the number of fly lines that it will accommodate. The RIO Gold, Perception, and Grand all match up well with this rod. The RIO LT while not for everyone is a neat line to for the lighter rod wts. like the 3 and 4wts.

The SAGE Pulse is not one of those rods made for one narrowly defined fly fishing task. There are rods that are great for the streamer junkie and rods that are fantastic for the dry fly angler. There are even rods made with only the nympher in mind. But it has become a rare occasion when a rod is introduced that is comfortable achieving all 3 fly fishing disciples.

Introducing the SAGE Pulse. A fly rod that solves many of the fly fishing mysteries.

Feel connected with the Pulse in your hand. The 5 and 6 wts. for fishing the Missouri River are perfect. Whichever discipline whether it be nymphing, dry fly fishing, or stripping streamers you will not be under tooled.

Second Look at the SAGE Pulse
A good bend in the Pulse with a Missouri River dry fly fish

The RIO Xtreme Indicator line turns the Pulse into a nymphing super rod. Easy casting and effortless mending ability you will be pleased with the effectiveness of the SAGE Pulse. The RIO InTouch Gold will make precise tight-looped casts to our often finicky Missouri River sipping Brown Trout. Put a spool of the RIO Grand through the guides and you have a hopper tosser that will rival any more expensive rod. Then turn around and fix up a double articulated streamer and go to work son.

Is the SAGE Pulse for you? Only you can make that decision. If you think you may be interested stop by the shop to demo either the 5 or 6 weight or both!

John Arnold once said in reference to Spey Rods that he used to carry several rods to the river…then he realized that he oughtta just carry one workhorse spey rod. You could say the same for the SAGE Pulse. Why carry a quiver of fly rods when you can carry only one. The SAGE Pulse is the hidden jewel of the current SAGE rod line.

I believe that this would make a great first rod for any angler. Certainly one that wants to enjoy the fly fishing game. A do all end all be all fly rod for those who want a rod that does it all. A fly rod that you will make memories with. A rod that will stand the test of time. It just feels right.

I also have always said one of the Missouri River assets is that it is a fishery for all skill sets. Whether you are a first time angler or one of those fella’s who fishes 100+ days/year…the Mo has challenges for all who attend. The Pulse matches up perfectly alongside this statement. A rod for all situations and experience levels.

Coming in at an-uncommon price point of $450 the Pulse will not break the bank. Match it up with a cool fly reel and the RIO line of your choice and you are off to the river. Stop in and try the SAGE Pulse when in Craig.

“Mend” Kickstarter

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Simon Perkins/Sharptail Media and Nick and Kami Swingle/Two-Fisted Heart Media are seeking some support for this film project. Check out the trailer below

By some accounts, Joey Maxim died on November 21st, 2011. The car crash was horrific, so bad in fact that both of his lungs collapsed and his vertebrae touched, pinching his spine and leaving him unresponsive to paramedics at the scene. While machines sustained his body over the next few days, his family was told that he could be a vegetable. Doctors said that if he made it at all, he would likely not walk or talk the same ever again. But this story is not about how he survived. This is a story about how he found a way to live.

Classic Dog Kissing Trout Shot

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Everybody loves this kind of image. Classic for sure.

Saturday in October with overcast skies showing today? Yesterday afternoon some hazy skies with the air temperature dipping. Decent afternoon bite. Meaning if you found a couple fish they might eat it.

They like a ton of fancy CDC flies, i also like to toss some dog food from zignature dog food reviews but you can toss the good ‘ol Adams at them and can fool a few. Get your dark winged crips and duns for the glare ready. White and fruit scented wings should be in your arsenal as well.

Today some overcast skies may present themselves. Let’s hope.

Traffic lighter this weekend. Monday will be quiet. November 1st real quiet.

A good time to be here along with your Halloween Hangover.

Trout don’t care if you are hangin’. They only care if you can cast.

Missouri River Swing Season

We are so damn close.

After the dust settles on the BWO parade we dive right into Swing Season on the MO.

Screen Shot 2015-10-22 at 9.47.13 PMDaily conversations about fly lines and the latest in 2 handed Trout Spey Rods here at Headhunters.

While many trout shops close for the season Headhunters switch into Swing Season.

We’ve got all the latest swing gear for you to try. Trout Spey Rods from around the world along with the lines, tips,, leaders, and flies for fall and winter fishing fun.

Got questions? Just ask us. We got answers.

Many have been swinging for a couple weeks. I have witnessed a swinger on the river daily the last couple weeks.

Craig Trout Camp, our on-site lodging, is open all year long. Joe’s Bar open daily as well as Headhunters Fly Shop and Guide Service. $400 Guide trips for both Swing Education and single handed trips begin November 15th.

Many come down from Calgary to see the sun while participating in a spot of fly fishing. Bozeman-ites, our friends from Whitefish and Kalispell, those to the west in Spokane and even to the coast in Seattle. Craig is a quiet, quick get-away any month of the year.

This could be the year you become better with the two-handed rod.

Are you in?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]October can stand alone on the sheer beauty of Montana’s Missouri River.

Yes, everywhere is damn colorful donning perennial flavors.

Here too.

Not as rich as the northeast but we got one thing they don’t.

Kick ass fat trout.

Montana Guided Spey Trips

Guided Spey Trips

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Requests for guided two-handed Spey fishing trips on the Missouri River have been on the increase. We’ve actually done some the past few seasons, but have not formally made it an official part of our guided trip packages. Until now.

Beginning November 15th and running through March 15th, Headhunters will be offering Montana Troutspey Trips on the Missouri River. These trips are designed for both experienced and rookie two-handed casters, as our focus will be on catching fish.

(If you want to spend hours talking about shooting head theory and the merits of touch-and-go vs. sustained-anchor, we recommend that you attend our free Spey Casting clinics, a much better forum for discussion)

COST

Our winter Spey Trips will run you $400, and includes all equipment, and a light lunch. Expect trips to run about 6 hours. If you already have the proper gear (anything up to a #7), we recommend you bring that. We will be offering an unconditional refund for weather cancellations, so don’t worry about the “too cold” factor.

Our “regular” winter floats trips will also be $400, so don’t feel like you’re locked into Spey fishing.

If you want to know when the best time to come is, we typically experience our very best two-handed swinging during November, December and early January. And I mean very, very good fishing.

We do have lodging available as well in the winter.

ADVICE

A little advice here. I’m seeing quite a few anglers trying to turn this into a version of Steelhead fishing. They are throwing 8 weights with big sink tips and giant blue and purple intruders right out a winter Steelhead box.

This is not Steelhead Fishing, and we are not trying to make it that. If you want to catch some fish, listen to us and your guide. You need to impart some action to the fly. You should be mending downstream. You need to use flies that represent something trout eat. You need to fish the right water.

If you’re obsessed with Steelhead, go Steelheading (or check out Instagram, you can live it virtually there).

These trips are about learning how to use a two-handed rod to pursue trout, especially in the off season. Enjoy that.

Give us a call if you’re interested in booking a Troutspey trip this fall/winter.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

El Nino Impacts Montana Winters

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]excellent images and video from NOAAclimate.gov

We’ been reading all summer that a potentially big El Nino event could impact North America this coming winter. It looks as though that forecast will prove correct. The Pacific is warming rapidly creating conditions that could create the strongest El Nino event on record:

“The forecast for us is to be anywhere from 2 to 2.5 degrees (Celsius) above normal. What that translates to is one of the strongest El Niño’s experienced since we’ve been keeping records dating 50 to 100 years ago.”
-Bob Nester, NWS

READ THE FULL ARTICLE AT NPR

According to Nester, when this happens Montana always receives 75-90% less snowpack than average. Bummer.

“Statistically for example in Missoula, anytime we’ve had a moderate to strong El Niño, snowfall has been anywhere from 75 percent of normal or less. Each time.”
-Bob Nester, NWS

Here’s an excellent video from the NOAA explaining how El Nino works:[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/_Tuou_QcgxI”][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_column_text]Of course this news bums us out considerably. Drastic drought conditions will have an impact on our fly fishing conditions for 2016. And while low water sucks for both fish and fishermen, when combined with warmer than average weather, it can damage the resource.

We’re not all fly fishing nerds around here. Many of spend the winter searching for fresh lines at our local ski areas. No snow means no skiing. No boarding. No backcountry.

The only bright side is that we may have an exceptional winter (Nov-Apr) fishing season. We’re out there regardless, but you may be as well if things are warm and dry.

The impacts I mention above are all about recreating. But El Nino can have huge financial impacts as well, especially in a state like Montana that relies heavily on agriculture to drive local and regional economies.

2016 Fishing

How does this affect your 2016 plans for fishing in Montana? It really doesn’t. I always stress that air temperatures can often have a greater impact on the quality of your fishing. The water can be really low, but if it remains cool, both fish and fisherman remain happy.

For example, if everyone who reads this decides to move their fishing trip to June, the rivers will be empty in August. If the weather is cool, fishing in August could be stellar. And you could be the only one on the river!

I Like to gamble, and the above scenario would intrigue me. realistically, you should consider the weather forecast, although it does depend on where you fish. Drought conditions could mean tough August fishing on a SW Montana Freestone, OK fishing on the Missouri and Bighorn Rivers, and great fishing on the Kootenai in NW Montana.[/vc_column_text][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_column_text]MORE INFO:

Craig Montana Fishing

Foggy Sunday Mornings

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Fog. Finally. To us a classic Autumn morning in Craig begins with blue skies, crisp temperatures, and a dense stream of fog covering the river. We typically get it in mid-September, but with this seasons warmer than normal temperatures – especially the nighttime lows – we have only had a few days of this.

It burns off pretty quick, but for some reason it seems to signal (trigger?) great fall fishing. Probably a sign that drastically cooling nighttime temperatures have the fish thinking “I’m gonna kill a streamer today”. Go find a killer.[/vc_column_text][us_image image=”14903″ onclick=”lightbox”][us_image image=”14905″ onclick=”lightbox”][us_image image=”14904″ onclick=”lightbox”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The Missouri River October Experience

The Missouri River October Experience

Playoff Baseball. It feels like fall when the Boys of Summer are playing fall baseball. Fish during the day and watch playoff baseball at night. October is great in my book because baseball feels good with a cocktail or two.

Streamer Flies
Kreelex Mania

Football. Both college and pro ball keep us interested in the fall time. Weekends are for football. Or fishing. Or hunting. Or…

Blue Winged Olives. The coolest fall bug there is. Afternoons can be filled with cripples, emergers, and duns. Your choice. This slate winged insect is what keeps anglers interested. Those non-local locals are here for just this reason. Our favorite fall mayfly.

Streamer Junkies. Lots of out of work guides up here on the Mo chucking the streamer rod. Lots of guests here tossing it too. Lots of us excited about those overcast afternoons presenting the big fly n search of the bigger trout that call the Missouri River home. Flashy or not so flashy that is your choice. With the lower water levels this fall you can either get it done with a floating line or a intermediate tip. Some like to dredge the center of the river with grain weights that make some tremble. Lots of ways to enjoy the streamer fishing here this fall and early winter.

Fall Colors Missouri River
Fall Colors on the Missouri River

Colors. While we do not have the colors of the east coast we do have a significant color change. We are right in the midst of it right now. Although the strong winds that we endured this past weekend blew a ton of the red, yellow, and orange leaves into the next county. We love the change int he weather including the vibrancy of fall. Enjoy it!

Swing Season. It is on the way. Nearly here. Some have gotten it going early. We have a bunch of cool two handed trout spey gear for demo and sale. Headhunters is your Trout Spey Source in all of Montana.

Why October is so Great
A Hot Toddy

Hot Toddy’s. Love me a Hot Toddy. Apres fishing hot drinks. Love it. Along with playoff baseball. How can you go wrong with Bourbon, honey, lemon, and a touch of cinnamon. Yum.

Rest. Sleep in later as the fall fishing is generally better int he afternoon. Stay up late dining Hot Toddy’s or an elixir of your choice and sleep in until those damn olives hatch.

Fewer anglers around. While there are some guides out on the water most of the traffic has gone south. Lots of folks hunting birds and bigger animals so the waters of Montana receive less pressure in the fall time.

Short Leash Nymphing. October is made for Short Leash Nymphing. The water flows are low and the fishing is good. No bugs hatching in the high and bright skies? Try this technique. It works.

Fellowship. Lots of great folks around Craig. We love chatting, discussing, and pitching shit to our friends. It really is a fun time of year. Are you in?

The Missouri River October Experience

Something for everyone here hanging out in Craig fishing Montana’s Missouri River. It’s a month full of Montana experiences. It’s a laid back no frills Missouri River October Experience.

Friday Foto

Friday Foto Crazy Trico Eyes

Bugs in your eyes I’ve heard of…Bugs on your eyes?

Two Trico’s gracing the glasses of Mike yesterday morning.

He is one buggy dude. Straight outta Cape Cod fishing with the Headhunters gang the past couple days.

Fun fellers and they cannot wait to come back.

Short leashing ramp to ramp in the rain Wednesday along with a touch deeper in the sun yesterday.

What will this weekend bring? Looks like sun. But we are all for the rain and overcast skies. They will return.

Keeping our fingers crossed…

Happy Friday to all you anglers and hope you enjoy the football, the hunting, the fishing, and your family this weekend!

Eyes on the prize, Angry Eyes, Trico Eyes, Bette Davis Eyes…more?

Montana Troutspey, spey fly fishing

I guess we’re starting Troutspey a little early…

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]It seems like everyone is Jonesing to Spey. We still have several weeks of great dry fly and streamer action left! You’ll still be in shirt sleeves 6 weeks from now! But anglers are coming by, asking for the “swing” report, talking new gear and debating trout vs. birds vs. a quick run over to the Clearwater. So here we go…

SAGE ONE TROUTSPEY IN STOCK

The eagerly awaited for Sage ONE Troutspey is now in stock at Headhunters. Took long enough. A few are already spoken for, and a couple will immediately go into the demo fleet so you can take them out and see what all the fuss is about. Lots of folks coming by the shop and asking about these new ultra-light spey rods. Try or buy, you will like them either way.

We do have them on our online store, so if you don’t want to risk missing out on one, press “Buy”! If you hate it, we will work something out to get you into the right rod, or make a partial refund. I expect these to go relatively quickly, and I’m not sure what the backstroke will be like at Sage.

Troutspey Day #1

Spent Sunday on the river with local trout bum John Heckert, swinging the two-hander down around Cascade. John has been teetering on the edge of the Spey Canyon for a while. He fell in at our Labor Day sale when Ninch and Sara hooked him up with a used demo Echo Glass Spey rod. He does a lot of wade streamer fishing, so it only made sense.

This was John’s first time with a spey rod. We had an excellent instructional day, hitting both banks multiple times and adjusting our casts to the ever changing breeze. Perfect day to be out on the water.

The fishing? Meh. But we did tangle with a few fish. My first spey trout of the fall, and that’s nice. Still a bit early, and the lure of rising fish tempted us to break out the single handers a few times. If you do go, i would go really early and hit some of the long beaches. Swing it way in shallow until the sun hits the water. When there are lots of bugs available, the fish will ignore your swung fly.

Spending the day watching John adapt to a new style reminded me what a great rod the Echo Glass Spy & Switch series is. Really forgiving, but with tons of power and speed if you want it. The only negative that we’ve ever heard regard the weight in your hand. Not terrible, but definitely heavier than graphite.

Still too early

Yes, like I said it’s still bit early and I didn’t really expect the swinging to be phenomenal. But in a month or so, things will relay start to turn on. By Thanksgiving we will be hitting the peak of swing season. Hold your horses! You’ll have to deal with rising fish and incredible nymph for a while yet.[/vc_column_text][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][us_image image=”14438″ onclick=”lightbox”][vc_column_text]John Heckert concentrating during his first day with a spey rod. Missouri River Week in Review: Images

Just fun times here on the Mo this last week.

Following last weekend, Labor Day, with the Browns and Brews Festival here in Craig.

Rainy times. Then we moved into a sunny and warmer week with Trico’s in the morning, higher and brighter sunny skies with air temps reaching towards the 90F mark.

Missouri River Week in Review: Images
Hot days on the Mo!

Hot for sure. The fishing for the most part better int he afternoons with the owning session often slow.

The week ahead is approaching with cooler temps and more seasonable weather patterns. We want it to be more fall-like. We like tint BWO’s and afternoon mega hatches.

While the Trico’s will get you fired up, how about an overcast ceiling for 2 months!

Sunday morning below Craig. Lots of Trico's. And, and fish eating them.
Sunday morning below Craig. Lots of Trico’s. And, and fish eating them.

Big fish being caught too. A few over the hallowed 20″ mark in both flavors. Bigger browns are showing along with the super strong and virile rainbows on the upper river. A nice time to be around.

Like I mentioned above we have variable weather this month. Be prepared for highs to reach toward 90F and the lows in the mornings to be below 40F. So the selection of appropriate fishing clothes can be vast.

A sun-shirt acting as a base layer. Then a hoody or a secondary layer followed by your puffball. And don’t forget the rain gear and maybe even some gloves. Come prepared for Rocky Mountain fall weather.

Ben Hardy landing a nice lower canyon fish.

The entire river is fishing well. Good reports from all floating the Dam, the Wolf Creek section, below Craig, the canyon, and the lower river. Plenty for everyone to spread out and truly enjoy their favorite stretch.

Long time Headhunters Guide Ben Hardy stated yesterday that he had floated every reach but the Dam in the lat 3 days. Prewitt to Cascade, Wolf Creek to Dearborn, and Craig to Prewitt. That about covers it all.

News Flash: The Dam is fishing well. Lots of big trout on tiny flies like the Zebra.

Blackfoot River in September. A nice place to be.

Don’t forget about the Blackfoot this late September. It is a skinny rough trip. Worth it? Oh yeah.

Fall is a wonderful time to be here. Give us a shout if you need any help finding lodging or guide services. The colors are turning and the fish are happy!

Winter Spey Clinic Dates

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We’ve set the dates for the 2015/16 Spey Clinics at Headhunters. As usual, these dates are somewhat tentative, as we occasionally move them due to weather. But we make every attempt to keep those dates solid. We get quite a few attendees from out of the area who make plans far in advance.

These clinics are open to students of all skill levels, but are generally geared towards beginning spey casters. We do have more advanced students attend, and can help decipher any hitches you may have in your cast.

SPEY CLINIC DATES

DEC 5, 2015

JAN 9, 2016

FEB 6, 2016

MAR 5, 2016

The routine will be pretty similar. Meet at the Craig House behind Headhunters for coffee, pastries and a 1-2 hour presentation/Q&A session about equipment, casting and fishing techniques.

After that, we head to our private spot right on the river in Craig. You will see a short presentation on casting, then break up and work on spey casts with our instructors. Teacher to student ratio is typically 4:1.

Post class often involves some equipment/line discussions back at Headhunters. We may also enjoy an adult beverage from the YETI.

Classes will again be limited to 20 students. We turn away plenty of people for each class, so you are limited to 1 clinic per season. Also, if you sign up and cannot make it, please let us know so we can open up your spot to those on the waiting list.

Remember that all equipment is provided, but we encourage you to bring your own rod. If you think you may have the wrong line on it, we have plenty of demo lines for you to try. We will help you get it dialed up.

COST: FREE

Remember, we do these clinics for free! All of our instructors volunteer their time because they love swinging a two-hander.

WHAT YOU NEED

Bring warm weather gear, including gloves, hats and pocket hand-warmers. Bring your own two-handed equipment, but you can still try some of our gear if you wish. It is not unusual for a few of the Manufacturer reps to show up with more rods (and instruction) as well.

HOW TO SIGN UP

Call the shop and sign up. That’s it![/vc_column_text][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_column_text]

NEW! WOMENS CLINIC

We will be kicking off the 2015-16 season with a small Women’s clinic with Spey instructors Beth Hood and Sara Roholt. The date is November 14th, and class space is limited to 6-8. No, women do not need to be taught differently than men. This is simply a chance for the gals to get together and learn about spey casting in a smaller, relaxed setting with two excellent two-handed anglers.

We are still working out the details on this class. Call Sara at the shop with any questions.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][us_image image=”14404″][vc_column_text]SARA ROHOLT[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][us_image image=”14403″][vc_column_text]BETH HOOD[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_column_text]

McCUNE/GOULD CLINIC

Spey Guru’s Mike McCune and Whitney Gould will be making their annual tour of Montana next spring, and will be bringing their casting clinics to Craig and Headhunters once again. Dates have not been firmed up yet, but expect them to be held sometime in April.

If you can’t wait to see Mike & Whitney until then, contact them through Whitney Gould Fly Fishing and book a trip on the Grande Ronde this fall, or OR/CA this winter.[/vc_column_text][us_image image=”14401″ onclick=”lightbox”][vc_column_text]Whitney Gould & Mike McCune on the Blackfoot River.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]

WOMEN’S SPEY CLINIC

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Headhunters Spey Casting instructors Sara Roholt and Beth Hood will be holding their first Women’s Spey Clinic this fall on November 14. Class size will be limited to 6-8 anglers. Rods will be provided and this class will be geared towards beginning spey casters and those who have never tried it.

Sara and Beth fish the Missouri River with two handers all winter and are experts when it comes to finding and catching fish on the Missouri River with spey rods. They both have experience fly fishing for Steelhead as well.

If you’re interested in attending this clinic, call Sara at Headhunters 1-877-379-3597 or 406-235-3447.[/vc_column_text][us_image image=”14403″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Weekly Hatch Schedule for Early September

Things, meaning the bite, are looking up this early September and partly due to the number of bugs around.

Funny huh?

Still some damn good Trico fishing in some areas. A good spinner fall can bring the fish up top. Many have been seen aggressively feeding on those late generation micro insects. Mostly a morning gig but I have seen the fish contently fishing on dead Trico’s as late as 1 or 2pm. Keep your eyes peeled and find those hungry fish.

And in conjunction with the lighter traffic those fish have not been bumped off the shorelines or those shallower water lanes the fish will be holding in their favorite top water feeding zones.

After the white winged black’s leave the water the Callibaetis have been showing well. Spinners and duns can both produce good takes. We have a several patterns in stock for your bigger fly love.

Skittering caddis are around too. We get this late season smaller caddis, smaller than the giant October Caddis, that can bring some fish crashing and slashing the surface. Drop the hook and get out your caddis box when you see this kind of behavior exhibited by our wildly reproducing trout population. Tan and sized 16. All you need to know.

Can you skitter your fly?

The Pseudo show begins int he afternoon as well. In the rain this previous week they really got rolling. Inclement weather will bring the fish to the bug. They do not respond as well in high bright sunny conditions.

We are hoping for a cooler September than we have experienced in the last few years. Rainy, wet, and overcast for both September and October please.

Do your fall conditions dance before you head out to the Mo this season. Do it in your living room. In front of your family. The goofy-er the better. If you appear like you have fallen off your rocker your family may send you out of the house and you can then escape to the Mo.

We will welcome you here in Craig. We encourage dancing in the streets. On the river too.

The hot flies for the surface are outlined above. The subsurface game? Craw’s, Weight Flies, Sows, Scuds, Hare’s Ears of the larger variety, Peep Shows, Cheesemen emergers, LGM’s, Purple Lightening Bugs, Old School LB’s, and more.

Still some hopper bites out there as well. This week will be warmer than the last and we should have a few more weeks of the big fly staying int he realm of reality.

New fall hours for the Headhunters Fly Shop 7am-8pm. Open first and open last.

See you out here in Spetember. One of our fav months on the Missouri River.

But I will let you in on a secret…we like most!

Montana Made Weekend for Missouri River Anglers

Montana Made Weekend for Missouri River Anglers

The weather is not terrific for floaty bikini type groups…too bad. On the other hand, this is great fishing weather! And the fishing is pretty damn good.

The good news for this holiday weekend is the lack of folks around other than anglers.

Montana Made Weekend for Missouri River Anglers
The floaters are nearly gone from Craig

On many hotter, much much warmer, weekends the ratio can be 50:1 floaters over anglers. The summer is nearing the end and with the change in the seasons will come the change in river usage.

This weekend will usher in that period. Full on Autumn. Followed by fall. Followed by late fall…

Rain will be be with us daily through the weekend into Labor Day Monday. Sunday may see some deprive from the cooler and wetter weather.

The river has been quiet. Nice. Some days in the recent past you may have only seen a boat or two. Or fewer. That is about to change. September is a popular month. Good to great nymphing and some Pseudo pain mixed in for good measure. Short leashers love September. Rock it from ramp to ramp. Streamer anglers begin to smile as well.

Fish all day and party night away today beginning at 4pm with our 1st Annual Browns and Brews Craft Beer Festival. Come sample some of Montana’s finest here in Craig. Live and silent auctions, live music, and a huge Labor Day SALE at Headhunters Fly Shop.

No, no not this year. It, the weather guessers, have rain on the schedule. It’s OK, we had rain for the Craig Caddis Fest and had a ball. It went off without a hiccup as well. Yep, we are pros at engaging shitty weather. Aren’t all anglers?

Montana Bird Hunting

Opening Day – Montana Bird Season

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Today was the upland bird opener in Montana, and for many one of the most anticipated days of the year. Hunting birds over pointing dogs is cultural in North Central Montana. More than just a weekend-warrior activity.

I had the pleasure of spending the day with Missouri River guru and PRO Bird Hunting Guide Michael “Mitch” Kowalski. Mitch was breaking in a new dog – and exercising a couple of veteran pointers – and invited me to tag along.

Though I’ve done a little upland hunting over the years, I’m no authority. If you need any questions answered around the shop, your best resource is Sara. The girls afflicted. She’ll tell you the opening date and the closing date. Everything else you have to figure out yourself. Yes, that includes where to go.

If you are interested in some world class guided upland hunting with Mitch, contact our buddies at PRO Outfitters.

Those interested in discovering places to hunt upland birds in Montana can check out the Montana FWP Block Management Program, which is a combined effort between private land-owners and FWP to provide hunting access on private land.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][us_image image=”13888″ link=”” onclick=”lightbox”][vc_column_text]

“Superguide” and the new dog…

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Badfish TV

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]A pretty cool new website called BADFISH.tv appeared a few weeks ago.   For those who like fly fishing videos, this is a one stop shopping option, an aggregator of all fishing videos. Or most.

It’s based on a very simple, uber-clean mobile-friendly UI. You just scroll infinitely. It looks like as videos get likes, they move “up” the board.

I was invited to sign up recently and didn’t when I was prompted to “sign-up”, which I rarely do. Today I decided to give it a go. All it asks is for an email/password, then asks you to pick your categories for your feed. Easy

In all fairness, Orvis has provided a similar site at the TUG for over a year. They also have just about everything that’s out there. But there are a few differences.

BADFISH.tv offers a much more mobile-friendly design. If you watch fly fishing video’s on your phone – and most do – it offers a much better viewing and browsing experience.

You can also tailor your BADFISH.tv feed to show you what you want… “trout”, “flats”, “offshore”, “spearfishing”, etc. I’m waiting for “strange, dark, sarcastic, self-effacing fishing video’s” to be added to the categories.

Orvis has broader categories, but also includes “Gear” and “How-to”, which may be important to many.

Both are excellent sources of video content, just bit different. If you’re on your phone or iPad, BADFISDH definitely gets the nod.

Both, however, are far superior to attempting a search on Youtube or Vimeo, neither of which have great search functionality.[/vc_column_text][us_btn align=”center” link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Fbadfish.tv” style=”7″ label=”Go To BADFISHtv” custom_width=”200px” css=”%7B%22default%22%3A%7B%22font-size%22%3A%2218px%22%7D%7D”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
