Tie this one up this holiday for summer fishing love.

Add a red bead for weight and some added bling to make this fly sing this spring.

Hope you are enjoying the family this week. If they get too annoying retire to the tying desk and spin up some Grape Slushy’s.

A wildly popular fly at times when the fish key on the purple color. Which seems to work often here and beyond. Check out this killer article about what fish see subsurface on MidCurrent.

Great Swing bite this week. And the fly that was on top of the list was this Sparrow. Runner up being the Carey Special. Included int he tip five is the leech. Black, olive weighted or not.

But this Gartside pattern is a hit with most of our Two Handed fans. It is popular in black, olive and tan.

Tie this one up for success on the Mo and on your local river.

Check out Jack Gartside’s comments about the origination, naming, and so forth here.

Happy Friday. A nice weekend ahead of us here in Craig. Hope you enjoy yours!

Tailwater Sow Bug Tying Video

This is the bug you need for fall. Spring, summer, and winter too.

If you fish the Mo, then you know you need this.

Love to tie this from the bend of my oversized Adams fishing October thru at least Thanksgiving.

The unweighted version is money. While the Tung-headed pattern can help you get down there where they live.

Snowing hard last night dumped a few inches on the ground here. A bit of a respite today, then back at ‘er on Friday with 5+ inches. Maybe 10 inches!

A good day to tie flies. And many of our guides are. When the wind calms, they will head out and make a couple casts. I may as well.

Come by the shop if you don’t want to tie any up. We have lots of them. And in several versions. With or without beads. Many many flavors too. Headhunters has the Best Flies Under the Big Sky and this fall is no different. We got the flies!

Swing Season is in full swing, and we have created a new Swing Fly 2HTROUT, soft hackle section. All of your favorite trout spey flies in one area!

Hundreds of streamers patterns to get your stripping side revved up. And the dry fly bins are stocked. Headhunters is our name and dry fly fishing is our game. Come by for info, suggestions, and Missouri River trout fishing conversation.

Smoke Jumper BWO Tying Video

Smoke Jumper BWO Tying Video

Our good friend Hans Stephenson over at Dakota Angler with the Smoke Jumper BWO today on the Headhunters Blog.

We like this fly. We like cripples here on the Mo. We like small flies. We like CDC. We like the baetis fly. So consequently we like the Smoke Jumper.

A no frills pattern that looks like the bug. Try the post in darker colors as well for the common glare conundrum here commonly experienced on the Missouri River. A dark post shows well against the slate gray autumn sky.

The river is heating up. Better every day right now. Tie up some fun fall flies this week as you prep for your annual October journey to Mother Mo.

Check out Hans on his YouTube page if you want to see a bundle, a ton of tying videos. Thanks again Hans for the large library of tying videos. A great resource for sure.[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7nyCMM0K04″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Wednesday Workshop Frenchie Tying Video

This fly is important for the nymphers on this river.

We sell tons of them in the fly bins and you are welcome to buy as many of them as you wish. OR you can tie a few before you arrive.

It’s heavy. Pretty narrow. No excessive tying material hanging from it to slow the sink rate. Simple. Heavy. Effective. Is a derivation of the classic Pheasant Tail. Has red on it. It’s heavy so it can dangle in the eyes of trout. Looks like fish food.

Tie a few up today! Or buy a cup full at Headhunters of Craig.[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/336645879″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Yeah, us too.

Why not get behind the beetle. Only sage long term anglers on the Mo tie it on.

Which camp do you subscribe?

Clouser Crayfish

Clouser Crayfish Tying Video

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Clouser Crayfish Tying Video

August nymphing requires lots of patience, potential weeds crowding your fly, and the Clouser Crayfish. Or a Zirdle.

A top fly for many nymphers this time of year. Add a split shot or not. Many let it ride as you drift over waving grass and bucket filled moving waters. The takes can be violent. Sometimes looks like the fish ate going 100 mph! The bobber certainly moves.

Six feet! If you cannot se the Indi move that far, fly fishing may not be your game?

One of our favorite “big nymphs” here on the Missouri, and it’s popular for bass and trout other places as well. We’ve put together this Clouser Crayfish fly tying kit with everything you need to tie 2 dozen flies. Perfect for yourself or as a gift.

Enjoy your Thursday. Seasonal temps here today with daytime highs in the mid 70’s. Warmer again as we move into next week.

Zirdle Bug Just Add Vise Kit and Video

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Zirdle Bug Just Add Vise Kit and Video

Many are fishing the Zirdle as the top fly on the deep water nymph rig.

Emulates crayfish, or just something that resembles food.

A popular fly throughout the summer months. And in August you will want this fly on your rig. The Zirdle is also a bug that leaves fly bins early in the season. Why not tie up a couple dozen for your trip to the Mo this year? A smart move!

With the water deeper today and maybe the near future tie this and toss at banks that are 2′-4′ deep. Hold on.

Enjoy this Tuesday in Craig. Raining still. Yesterday rained cats and dogs, all day long.

Dry fly fishing still good. Gotta look a bit harder. Good PMD hatch Monday as well. Caddis will take them on top as well. Find you bug and fish it.

Even if it is a Zirdle.

Tying the Rusty Parachute Video

Squeeky believes that we may see these bugs this week? Water temps in the mid 50’s range! Working their way upwards this week as well with the warmer and hot afternoons towards the weekend!

Historically PMD’s show around the 4th, 5th, or 6th of June. The first emergences. But we have in the past 5 years seen them as early as May 28th!

What will the week ahead bring for bugs on the surface? Don’t know. I do know that yesterday in the canyon produced no bugs. None. Today? Probably the same.

We can assume that the BWO’s have run their course. The March Browns? Probably gone as well. Mothers Day Caddis? I would guess that there are some more left in our system? How many? I don’t know that answer.

Working towards the weekend on this hump day. Warm again today. No wind though!

Nymphing red hot. The remainder of the disciplines not as good per above. Streamer anglers? Toss ’em if you want.

Enjoy your Hump Day! Tie up some spinners of the PMD variety for the next couple months. Last year was an epic PMD event for 10+ weeks. This year? Let’s hope it is similar.

Summer is coming to a river near year. The Mighty Mo. Look us up in Craig for all things Missouri River. Your entertainment, information, education, and customer service experts in Craig!

This highly popular Rusty Spinner pattern by the Harrop family is a killer when fishing June and July on our home water here in central Montana.

We fish it a ton. Biot bodied sparsely hackled almost floating fly that make brown trout move from their lane.

Yessir. That is the kind of move you want fish to make. Moving to take a fly is one way to make the fish behave aggressively. If you can get them to move, yes make them move, you got ’em.

This available in one of our Just Add Vise Tying Kits. Yep you get enough materials to tie 25 of these babies. All included int he kit. Plus this video with a QR code on the package and you can tie it in your tent if you wish! 25 hooks, boots, hackles, for you to get 25 ready for the coming season. Buy it online if you so desire. But not right now…We are getting these very popular tying kits put back together after the thinning of the herd this March and April!

A Rusty Spinner has long been the favorite fly amongst summer dry fly anglers. If you can’t get them on anything else, tie on a Rusty Spinner and fish it till you he eats it.

It’ll work. Honest.

Trust me, I’m a fishing guide…[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/121434150″]

Fly Tying Thursday Classic Rainbow Czech

If you don’t have this fly in your Missouri River box we know one of two things about you.

Wither you are a dry fly guy, or you have not fished the Mo before.

The Rainbow Czech is a fly pattern that many anglers have on their nymph rig at all times. Or a facsimile thereof.

So, if you are new to the MO, tie this feller up. Lots of them. Squeeky uses this fly 12 months of the year. He does not take it off, often. Always the lead fly of one of the two nymph rigs.

If you got some time this week ahead and don’t know what to do, tie this up for your 2020 spring Mo River Trip.

Do we have the kits available? Of course, JAV kits are proprietary and only available at Headhunters of Craig! See them below and get yours today.

Tying Tuesday @ Headhunters of Craig

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Tying Tuesday @ Headhunters of Craig

The Sparrow is a fly that flat out works.

Commonly swung through Missouri River Trout Spey runs.

Or employed with a single hander while fishing the RIO Single Handed Spey Line. Squeeky’s favorite single handed line for fall skinny water weed bed hovering, plucking, surprising, sneaking, stalking…

An easy caster, true feel, solid hook-ups. A line that makes me forget I’m tossing a streamer line.

Honest, that line is fantastic. Try it. You’ll like it. Line technologies continue to impress me. Whether it be from the gang in Idaho Fall or east of us in Michigan. While rod technologies move forward I could argue that fly line tapers, technologies, and applications are moving at a breakneck pace.

Whoa! Off track per usual. The Sparrow. Tie it. Fish it. Love it.

Plus how cool is it at the bar when asked what you were using out there today to state confidently…

A Sparrow Bro’.

This Jack Gartside pattern has fooled tons of fish. While fresh patterns will catch not only our eyes but the trout out there, classic patterns like the Sparrow never fall from style. So many of the current fly patterns incorporate flashy tunnel like synthetics. Not the Gartside Sparrow. Just the like the most classic of streamer patterns, ie Woolly Bugger, this fly hangs onto fame without contemporary bling.

After learning how to tie the pattern you can implement any color scheme you desire. Like the October Caddis would look dazzling to those trout with autumn caddis interests. Yummy!

The Sparrow is part of our extensive proprietary Fly Tying Kits line Just Add Vise. Check out all of the Just Add Vise Kits that include enough hooks, materials, and video to tie 25 flies!

Buzzball Fly Tying Just Add Vise

A great fly for the Mo. Squeeky’s favorite summertime app tern.

Been tossing it the past couple weeks. A good time for sure.

It is not red hot, yet. It will be.

No wing profile recognition, no negative reinforcement of the trout. Looks like garbage. The kind of garbage that trout eat. Here, on the Mighty Mo.

Buy this pattern in the shop. We have them in several sizes up to size 18. For baby junk eaters.

Buy this Just Add Vise Tying Kit in store as well. Or online.

Watch the video, then tie the fly. You cannot foul this fly up man. It looks even better if it is tied, un-neatly. Sloppy in fact. Those who tie this fly too neatly, don’t get it.

Fish it with confidence. Created for the junk eaters at Jackson Rock by Gary LaFontaine a couple decades back.

A local classic that I first saw fishing with Mark Daly and LT back in the day. Don’t know who created it, but one of those two certainly had their hands in it. Both long time Mo River anglers and two of Squeeky’s influences for sure. Learned a ton about the river from both of those cats.

Firebead Ray Just Add Vise Tying Kit

Tie this one up for winter water.

If this is not in your box for the winter and spring fishing here on the Mo, you must not fish here often!

The coming out of this specific pattern was in 2008. HH had it. High water was here. This was the bug that you had to have.

Now a winter staple as well as a spring time producer. Tie them up in a coulee different shades like pink, gray-pink, and gray. And tan is the sleeper!

Tie them up. If not, swing by the shop, or order online here!

High water means more bigger bugs.

Yep. Big fly big water theory. Some say it. Some even mean it.

If you are headed this way in the spring, summer, or fall you may want to have this in your trout bag.

Nymph it. Streamer fish it. Jig it. Well shoot, float it.

Popular in high water situations and conditions.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/121432769″ video_title=”1″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Pink Lightening Bug Just Add Vise Kit

This might be a good idea to tie on fishing the Mo this spring.

One of the standard issue fly patterns. I first saw it from local legend Dan Gard. Don’t know if he invented it, or tipped it, but he was the first one to have it.

Bob Brent may have invented it. One of those two. I think it was Dan though. Dangerous Dan  Gard. Great fly creator. Funny feller. Have a couple stories about guiding with Dan my first or second year ont eh Mo. Fun times. Enjoyed it a lot. Learned a ton from the likes of Dan Gard and Geoff Ferguson in the front end of the 2000’s. May more too. But I like the way those two tie their flies. Fuzzy. Shaggy. Good looking. Fishy.

I think it was Dan’s baby.

Tie this feller up if you want to catch some with the bobber this spring.

The Headhunters Online Shop is LIVE again. Our crack web team, John, put the new version together this winter. Lots of work. Great looking store. Ready for action. Why shop on Amazon wen you can get your fly fix here online.

Watch and learn. If you don’t want to tie them up stop by the shop and fill up a cup or two. Or you could pick out a few Just Add Vise kits including the Pink Lightning Bug.

Happy Friday. Many Headhunters staffers fished this week with results all over the board. Some days are better than others. Mark fished yesterday with hot and cold stretches. Swung the fly the entire time with fish coming to hand on the Thin Mint, small black leeches, the Sparrow, Superflash White Zonker. larger Partidge and Peacock. John was out several days this last week too. His report is good. He has not changed flies in a month or two. And fishing in very thin water. That is true. The fish are holding in beautiful locales. Without the pressure yo can find them in pretty obvious spots.

That is all for today. Swing Clinics all weekend long. We will see you on the flats. Call today for lodging this weekend here in Craig.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/122357219″ video_title=”1″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Little Green Machine JAV

You need the Little Green Machine tucked away in your fly vest this fall.

Possibly the most popular fly at Headhunters of Craig. It still may be the Rainbow Czech Nymph, but I think it has been surpassed by this 12 month jewel.

Wilcox’s Little Green Machine is an essential fly on this and many other rivers of the west.

Order up the Little Green Machine Just Add Vise Kit from the shop or swing in and pick up not only this must have but many others for the Missouri River.

If you don’t feel like tying it, we only have about 1000 dozen in reserve….

You gotta have this little killer if you like to short leash, deep nymph, or tie it off an Adams. A fly for all conditions.

Missouri River Bugs – April
