High water means more bigger bugs.

Yep. Big fly big water theory. Some say it. Some even mean it.

If you are headed this way in the spring, summer, or fall you may want to have this in your trout bag.

Nymph it. Streamer fish it. Jig it. Well shoot, float it.

Popular in high water situations and conditions.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/121432769″ video_title=”1″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Pink Lightening Bug Just Add Vise Kit

This might be a good idea to tie on fishing the Mo this spring.

One of the standard issue fly patterns. I first saw it from local legend Dan Gard. Don’t know if he invented it, or tipped it, but he was the first one to have it.

Bob Brent may have invented it. One of those two. I think it was Dan though. Dangerous Dan  Gard. Great fly creator. Funny feller. Have a couple stories about guiding with Dan my first or second year ont eh Mo. Fun times. Enjoyed it a lot. Learned a ton from the likes of Dan Gard and Geoff Ferguson in the front end of the 2000’s. May more too. But I like the way those two tie their flies. Fuzzy. Shaggy. Good looking. Fishy.

I think it was Dan’s baby.

Tie this feller up if you want to catch some with the bobber this spring.

The Headhunters Online Shop is LIVE again. Our crack web team, John, put the new version together this winter. Lots of work. Great looking store. Ready for action. Why shop on Amazon wen you can get your fly fix here online.

Single Handed Spey Video w/ Simon Gawesworth of RIO

Today on the Headhunters Fly Shop Blog we bring you this fantastic video with Spey Casting Guru Simon Gawesworth of RIO Products.

We get lots of questions about this newer style of single handed casting and Simon will break down a few myths and confusion points in this informational and educational video.

Really worth watching. A couple of fellers from Spokane empty the single handed spey cast on the St. Joe in Idaho. We see a few using it here as well. Mark has been sneaking around with his for the past year. IT comes out more and more in specific situations. Swinging soft hackles, small leeches, or even overhanding long distances just for fun!

Enjoy this flick from RIO today on the Headhunters Blog. Headhunters of Craig is Your Trout Spey Shop!

The legendary Rainbow Czech Nymph offered by Headhunters Fly Shop of Craig Montana.

Included is the video above. Come by the shop picking up the Just Add Vise Rainbow Czech Nymph Tying Kit. Tie a zillion my friend. This fly only works from this week…until last week next year.

The Rainbow Czech nymph is attached to most nymph rigs 365 days a year!

It used to me our #1 seller in the shop. Now it may be Wilcox’s Little Green Machine. I’d tie the LGM below the RB Czech. Then get your net ready.

Enjoy the video today on Headhunters Fly Shop daily Blog. Tie up a gross this evening. Enjoy.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/122361553″ video_title=”1″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Spring Training

Spring Training in Montana

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Spring Training in Montana

Tomorrow starts the Spring Special here at Headhunters of Craig. Cheap guide trips and cheap lodging. Yes it is coming, Spring we mean. Warm out all week and snow tomorrow.

April is the big push for this special as it runs through the end of the month. Call today and get yourself some good dates as the BWO’s begin to play a part toward the middle of the month.

Streamer lovers get in on the spring bite too. Some of the beer fish of the year can come in April. Nymphing is rock solids dn the dry fly, as mentioned above can be epic fishing midge and BWO hatches. Blind fishing not too bad as the education of trout has just begun for the season.

Spring baseball is underway along with the sunnier skies and air temps we are excited here at Headhunters Fly Shop and Guide Service. Lots of new products enter the store in March and April for the summer anglers.

Even more importantly are the flies that 7wt has added this year. More streamers of course, and more Trout Spey patterns too. Our ever expanding and up to date fly selection is second to none on the Missouri River. The difference? Lots of angler input from all of us, and the cash register. If that fly does not move quickly to the river, Ninch puts it in a fly cup and gets rid of them! Honest. The difference maker here in Craig is the focus on the flies. A dead fly pattern does no-one any good. The retailer or the consumer. Dead flies gotta go! And they do here @ Headhunters.

Catching more fish has always been our focus and that has not changed. Educating the Missouri River angler is also our interest. Knowledge is what the fly fishing consumer is always looking for and we are here as a partner in that process.

A dry fly only video. Rare in today’s market. Yes, Headhunters is a dry fly friendly shop. Hunting Heads is what our business is based on. But we make our mortgage payment selling nymphs…go figure?

How to Avoid Twist and Memory of a Fly Line Video

From RIO this informative video about How to Avoid Twist and Memory of a Fly Line Video.

I don’t see this everyday but when I do it is trouble. A few instances in the boat over the years have been just awful. You get to Montana, posted up on rising trout, line up your dry fly rod…and POW! Twisted fly line!

Cure it on the river, before you get here; whenever it happens for better fly fishing success.

Check out this short video and have the tools to un-twist that line when engaged int he heat of the battle!

No football, no Grand Slam tennis, no baseball, ice dancing again on the Olympics…so why not learn a bit about how to avoid these common fly line issues.

Rest today. Back to work tomorrow. Ugh. February.

Today a soft hackle video with Hans S of the South Dakota Angler. We used to post a quite a few vids from Hans. A good tier. If you are in the SD region look up the SD Angler for all your fly fishing needs!

We use these a bunch in the fall. Alos during the spring session you could tie a Midge Soft Hackle, a BWO softie, and any generic mayfly or caddis soft hackles for swinging or nymphing success here fishing the Missouri River.

Perfect for the trout spey or single handed spey gang. Enjoy your Thursday.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4ZyRn3X5RI” video_title=”1″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

A fly that will get you through the winter. All winter. Pink is the theme for nymphing from December 1st until mid June?

This ever popular winter bug today on the Headhunters Fly Shop Blog and Fishing Report. The Pink Lightening Bug JAV Video.

Watch and learn. If you don’t want to tie them up stop by the shop and fill up a cup or two. Or you could pick out a few Just Add Vise kits including the Pink Lightning Bug.

Happy Friday. Many Headhunters staffers fished this week with results all over the board. Some days are better than others. Mark fished yesterday with hot and cold stretches. Swung the fly the entire time with fish coming to hand on the Thin Mint, small black leeches, the Sparrow, Superflash White Zonker. larger Partidge and Peacock. John was out several days this last week too. His report is good. He has not changed flies in a month or two. And fishing in very thin water. That is true. The fish are holding in beautiful locales. Without the pressure yo can find them in pretty obvious spots.

That is all for today. Swing Clinics all weekend long. We will see you on the flats. Call today for lodging this weekend here in Craig.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/122357219″ video_title=”1″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Double Spey Cast

A quiet day on the river.

Double Spey Cast River Right Downstream Wind today on the Headhunters Blog.

Somedays we take a slight break. Today is one of those days.

The ugly part of late season for outfitters is putting together the paperwork for the Board of Outfitters and ramming all of the receipts into Quickbooks.

It’s not as fun as fishing. That part is fun. And engaging. And instructional. And mentally important.

We’re still out there guiding. And fishing ourselves. Swinging.

Remember that we have private casting lessons and Trout Spey Guide Trips this fall moving into winter. 4 Seasons here at Headhunters of Craig.

Headhunters is Montana’s Trout Spey Education Center. Look us up with any needs you may encounter. Open daily 8-6[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/194606461″ video_title=”1″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Not too many folks out fishing. Quite nice.

Those that are might be tossing the Trout Spey around.

Let us know if you need a helping hand. Shop open daily from 8am-6pm. Open a bit longer for a bit longer, then to winter hours.

Decent BWO hatches the past couple days. Need more overcast for the bugs to become more sticky. Streamer fishing average at a best. Kreelex is king!

Some of you are hunting. Good luck out there and be safe.

Got another month of strong swinging and dry fly fishing and nymphing too.

Little Green Machine JAV

Little Green Machine JAV

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Little Green Machine JAV

You need the Little Green Machine tucked away in your fly vest this fall.

Possibly the most popular fly at Headhunters of Craig. It still may be the Rainbow Czech Nymph, but I think it has been surpassed by this 12 month jewel.

Wilcox’s Little Green Machine is an essential fly on this and many other rivers of the west.

Order up the Little Green Machine Just Add Vise Kit from the shop or swing in and pick up not only this must have but many others for the Missouri River.

If you don’t feel like tying it, we only have about 1000 dozen in reserve….

You gotta have this little killer if you like to short leash, deep nymph, or tie it off an Adams. A fly for all conditions.

Rainier Beer Montana Edition

Great Beer Advertising Rainier Beer Montana Edition!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Great Beer Advertising Rainier Beer Montana Edition!

The first time I stepped in Joe’s Bar with Shaun Thompson and Erich Bittmann asking what was on tap…I was shocked.

We had driven 12 hours across two states and the two beers on tap at the Craig Bar were…Oly and Rainier.

Yuck.

While I have endured lots and lots of both I now prefer something watery and weak like Coors Light. As you can see my taste for beer has not matured much. I was an ardent Budweiser drinker for many years. And was at that time as well. I do remember ordering a bottle of Bud and a Crown rocks.

Yummy.

Then the most remarkable thing happened when we decided to head back out fishing to the Mighty Mo. Uncle Joe asked if we would like a couple to go. “To go?” I asked.

Yeah. A couple roadies. “Well yes I would.” A beer and a blend. To go.

Perfect.

Back to the Rainier Beer ads. Tons of them in the 70’s and 80’s as I grew up in the green state of Washington. Much before the Microsoft, Amazon, and tech world explosion. More of a quiet beer drinking fishing and hunting society.

This one is classic and of course includes a Montana theme.

Enjoy your weekend with a half rack of Rainier.

Reach Cast

Oh boy it’s hot Reach Cast Video

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Reach Cast Video

Getting hotter here on the Mo. Monday it did not fish all that well. A few on the dry, but not many on the nymph. Be prepared for either outcome here in the near future.

Plugging along in the back end of July. It’s hot.

The fishing can be difficult on the dry. Even more difficult if you don’t employ some sort of slack line presentation.

The Reach Cast is one of those that may help you get a few to the net. A Pile Cast will work. An S Cast will work. Any slack line presentation that you feel you should present.

Because dragging the fly over the trout, even just a little bit, may not encourage the fish to bite your fly.

7wt’s famous saying is true right now which is…

The fishing is as good as you are.

Happy Tuesday.

Windy too.

So, beyond that the fishing real good, in the morning. Yesterday it stopped fishing about noonish. Or one-ish. Today? Who knows. The day before it fished well until about 3pm.

Weeds? Yep. Some days better than others. Yesterday not bad at all. Today? Oh, don’t know yet.

Dead Flies Don’t Swim Video July 5th

Yep. Trico’s. Shot late July a few years back.

All the regular things apply here. First cast. Good drifts. Great presentations. Deead drifts…etc.

Because, dead flies don’t swim bro.’

Ever.

Enjoy this flick today. Hotter that hell today and this week ahead. Fish early.

Good caddis action for the evening session. But a short window.

It feels like we are fishing inside a convection oven. Cooling towels could be important. And lots of water. Drink water. Lots.

Or die.

Loving July. Let’s hope the water temps don’t spike, the weeds don’t inundate us with weed-dum, and the air temps return to seasonal norms.

I’d fish now. The time is now.

Remember that fall is on its way and you should think about booking your lodging and guide trips to get them locked up. September and October are just around the corner.

How about visiting in November this year. Quiet, fishy. Lodging available, guides available, no pressure on the river.

How about giving way to the two handed game and get your Trout Spey on?

It’s an idea. Plant it. It will grow.

It’s July, and we are not even punchy…yet.

High Water Vid from a few years back

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

High Water Vid from a few years back

A quick video from 6 years back, our last high water era, with instructional overtones. While this video is a few years old, it still applies to us today. Meaning today!

Fish the soft inside water, not the outside sexy stuff. Insides my fishy friends.

While we are not seeing the flows that we saw during the previous early summer season high water period 2008-2011, we may see them rise to the 10K-12K-ish if the water comes of the hillsides quickly. Or even higher if the rain gods grace Montana, the Rockies, and surrounding communities.

If the snow comes off slowly we may see the flows in the 6K-8K range for the month of June. This according to Stephanie Micek of the DNRC. Squeeky spoke with her yesterday and she said it has a lot to do with how the water comes off. Warmer temps, or even hot temperatures with day time highs in the 80’s F and night time lows above 55F will trigger some rapid run-off. If we see more seasonal day time air temps we will see a gradual run-off. Night time lows are part of the equation. When she dips into the 40’s the pace of the run-off happens much more slowly.

That is the news of the day my Missouri River brethren. Not excluding my sister-ren. Hah.

See you on one of those flooded dry fly flats soon enough. Until then happy hump day from us out here in central Montana to you living vicariously out there in wide open America.

‘boo This Classic from Scumliner Media

A spring day here in central Montana.

Snow on the ground and 20F. Headed toward 40F today. Warmer this week with some scattered snow showers, rain, sun, and most likely some wind.

A transition week really. Will se see more winter lie conditions or will this week usher us into a springlike mode? Who knows. Again, tat Mother Nature creature is a tricky one.

This video by Scumliner Media titled ‘boo was shot a couple years ago. A good one to watch as you too figure out your spring. Should I fish, should I get out on the ski hill a couple more times? What should I do? Tie summer PMD patterns? Go for a drive along side your local stream?

Whatever you decide enjoy it today. Tomorrow is Monday.

We do have a couple Sweetgrass Rods in the shop that you may like. Come by and see if bamboo is in your future. Thanks to the Sweetgrass boys for keeping tradition alive and well in Twin Bridges Montana.

Case of the Mondays

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Welcome back to the cubicle! Monday morning and we’re all recovering from a busy weekend. The sun came out, and so did all of the Montana anglers who’ve been secluded under a blanket of snow for the last few months. By winter standards, the river was packed. Fishing reports were varied, and frankly we heard a lot of tough fishing stories. Regardless of success, everyone seemed to be enjoying the fresh air and time on the water. Probably the first days of the year for many folks.

Nymphing reports were good if you know where and what to throw. We’re always preaching it this time of year, but “slow-water” was the word. Like not moving. And pay attention. The usual stuff produced, and a boat is really necessary for much of the river. The canyon had some good reports from those who didn’t spend the day in fast water.

Streamer fishing reports I heard were not great, but I think everyone I talked to caught at least some fish. Some two-handed anglers did very well. There were a few stories of fish in fast and shallow water, which I myself experienced on Friday with some explosive hits on a floating line way above “the bucket”. Might be some Rainbows beginning to move into shallow water for reproductive duties.

I spent Sunday fishing with Todd Tanner from Conservation Hawks, the Bigfork, MT based conservation organization whose mission is centered around the effects of climate change and future impacts to sportsmen. We decided to hunt heads while talking conservation, so I don’t have much of a report to give. The stars never aligned (wind, sun, clouds, bugs), but we did see an excellent midge hatch mid-day. All too brief, however. We also swung a fish or two.

Go check out the Conservation Hawks website and get involved. You may also be familiar with films produced by Conservation Hawks, as they’re typically included in the F3T lineup. While you recover from the weekend, hide from your boss and enjoy the most recent flicks from Conservation Hawks.[/vc_column_text][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/197360846″ video_title=”1″][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/150681923″ video_title=”1″][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/124560152″ video_title=”1″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

F3T Time – Convergence

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/197360846″ video_title=”1″][vc_column_text]The Fly Fishing Film Tour is starting it’s way across the country, and here’s a trailer for one of the features titled “Convergence” from our friends at Conservation Hawks.

CONVERGENCE, the new film from Conservation Hawks, explores the essence of fly fishing. In September, 2016, the CH team filmed Hilary Hutcheson and her daughters Ella and Delaney; Travis Swartz (a.k.a. “Hank Patterson”); Simon Perkins, Els Van Woert and their daughter Pippa, and Pippa’s grandfather (and Orvis CEO) Perk Perkins. CONVERGENCE is the story of these incredible anglers and their collective passions: their love for wild trout; for healthy landscapes; for clean, cold waters and for family and friends. The film also shares their concerns about the future, their desire to protect our fisheries, and their unease with our changing climate and rapidly warming planet.
CONVERGENCE is a collaborative effort between Conservation Hawks and Conservation Media. It follows the recent Conservation Hawks films COLD WATERS and CHROME, and will be part of the 2017 Fly Fishing Film Tour (F3T).

Fly Tying Night in America Wednesday Jan 18th

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Fly Tying Night in America Wednesday Jan 18th

Big night in Craig Montana. Fly Tying Night in America Wednesday Jan 18th.

A loose gathering. No lesson based stuff. A free for all with some beer, sometimes chips.

Lots of BS and some fly tying too.

Fly Tying Night in America Wednesday Jan 18th 5pm til about 8pm. A couple hours for sure.

I’m tying winter nymphs. You? What are you tying. I usually tie Buzzballs.

We are just having a few of these this year so join us Wednesday night.

Come on down and tie up one of our famous Just Add Vise Kits.

Enjoy the Just Add Vise Kits Mozuri Minnow today from the mind/vise of John Arnold. His take on the Yozuri plugs that some fish in the saltwater. This fly works. Rides weedless, looks like a stugglin’ rainbow, and is flat out cool.

Swing it on the Mo for year long success.

Following the incredible journey made by a Salmon, the film features the people and places that call this river home. The Susitna is an incredibly diverse ecosystem for Alaskan wildlife – and livelihoods for many – but is under attack from a few folks who only see dollar signs.

The Natural World Video

The Natural World Video

I met Tom Melvin this last October at the Headhunters Fly Shop Advanced Fly Fishing School. I was unloading the truck with beer, food, and various fly fishing gear. Tom walked up and introduced himself.

I got to know Tom the following four days. Tom is a Catholic Priest. An interesting feller who loves to fish. Like so many of us, he has a job too. I really liked Tom. An outdoorsman who has a truly interesting past. He has served in the Navy and held various roles within the Catholic Church.

Tom is threatening to come back to the Missouri this year. I bet he does.

On the last morning Tom showed me this video. I loved it.  We are always looking for fish media that has a message. Other than Bro-brah stuff. And, this short is fantastic.

If you don’t get to church today…and instead watch football all day…at least watch this vid!

Wild Trout: A Montana Fish Story

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Wild Trout: A Montana Fish Story

A cool Montana film to watch this morning as the calendar turns a page.

Happy New Year!

Hope you are not nursing anything to severe today. If you are, turn back over and sleep it off.

At high noon in Craig we have the Annual Polar Bear Plunge. It will be damn cold, with air temps in the mid-teens, and snow falling from the sky.

Gonna be really quite frigid for the next week. At least for the coming week. Some daytime highs will not crawl above ZERO. Highs below zero. That is cold man. Definitely ice in your guides!

We will be in the store for most of it unless we call an audible and stay home for travel safety reasons. January kicks off the booking season and we are ready with our capable booking staff at the ready.

2016 was a fantastic year for us @ Headhunters in downtown Craig.  2017 will be more of the same. We will be celebrating our 10th year here on the Missouri River. We are so fortunate to be in the fly fishing game. Fun times, great staff, and the best customers in Montana and beyond.

We love to help anglers young and old, novice to expert, nymphers to dry fly fanatics.

Look for more entertainment this coming year from Headhunters. A return of our popular Advanced Fly Fishing School in the fall, a couple new world class fishing guides, lots more Trout Spey Education including the best in 2 handed products, 10th Annual Caddis Fest and BBQ Cook-Off, Browns and Brews Fest Labor Day Weekend, our Fan Favorite Spring Special $350 Guide Trips beginning March 15th, Blackfoot River Trips, BBQ’s, free casting lessons, Fly Tying Nights ,and much, much more from your favorite Missouri River fly shop.

Welcome to 2017! Plan it. Enjoy it. Fish it!

Fishski Revisited Scumliner Media

Hoep you are on your couch today and not at the office.

But if you are at the office we suggest you watch this video. Even if you have seen it before.

We are still chilly here in downtown Craig but we are warming as the week goes on. Then cold as we return to the weekend and the New Year.

There is enough snow on the ground if you want to put on your rock skis and head out onto the Missouri River slopes. Although we suggest you do it at your local ski area.

The High Bank slope is sweet though. Holding snow.

It may slough. But that is just speculation…

Things to do in Craig when it’s 20 Below.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]As the snow tapers off and the temperature drops, we head into a solid 36 hours of butt-ass cold weather. The weatherman says -20 or more (or less?) coming Friday night, and that “Real Feel” map says -40 all over the region. We’re not coming into work today. No need to be here for shuttles and we don’t like the idea of staff or friends driving in sketchy conditions. Sara and Braden will roll in Saturday around noon when the temperatures hit the zero mark. Hopefully.

So, what can you do on a day like today? Not going outside is the primary goal, so what can we do inside that’s fishy? Personally, I’m planning on cleaning my half of the bedroom (Seriously Julie, I’m going to do it this time. Probably after Mike & Mike, though.).

VIDEO’S

First off, let’s watch a few video’s. On Friday morning you can head on over to the Orvis blog for the Friday Film Festival. Phil Monahan usually puts up 10 or 12 of the newest and best fly fishing videos every Friday, so we don’t have to. I did find this one in my video feed that I really like. It hardly has any views or likes, but the camera work and editing are fantastic. And it’s nice to watch some relaxed Steelheaders that catch fish. Really good stuff.

Warning: this is a foreign film from Canada and there are no subtitles.[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/191410363″][vc_column_text]

READ A BOOK

Hopefully you caught my blog about Chris Dombrowski’s new book “Body of Water”. Perfect on a frigid day as it will transport you to a white, sand bottom flat in the Bahamas with the sun beating down on you. Nice and warm, and one of the best fly fishing books I’ve read in ages. If you want to go classic, grab “92 in the Shade” by Thomas McGuane. Perfectly warm story for a polar vortex. Not interested in reading about fishing? Anything by Cormac McCarthy, but you need to be in a quiet place with no interuptions.

WATCH A NON-FISHING MOVIE

It’s probably not healthy to watch as many fly fishing movies as some of you do, so why not try something different. Just head over to Vimeo (NOT YouTube!) where artists and creatives hang out. Type a subject into the search box and go. Or better yet, hit the Vimeo Staff Picks where you’ll see all kinds of creative edits from all over the world. Here’s an unfitting video I watched last night. It does have lots of Northern BC in it, but no fishing.[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/193969644″][vc_column_text]

GET BACK INTO FLY TYING

Does anyone do that anymore? Dust off your fly tying kit and whip up a few bugs. That will make you forget that trees are exploding outside. When I sit down to tie I have 1 of two plans:

1. Tie a bunch of a single pattern to fill the box for the upcoming season. This is probably going to be a tailwater-nymph, Buzzball’s, or maybe even some basic peacock/grizzly/bronw buggers. Whatever I decide on I stick to it, I don’t even change hook sizes.

2. Come up with something new. To do this effectively you need to have some parameters, like “summer steelhead, skater, low-water, late season” or whatever. DO NOT just sit down and try to invent an entirely new style and/or fly. Pretty tough to do, and you’ll just end up staring at a hook in the jaws of your vise for an hour before realizing it’s the wrong hook.

And remember, if you’re going to tie flies on the dining room table, you need to clean your room first or your wife will get pissed!

BUILD A FLYROD

You need to plan this one in advance, and you can’t do it in a single day. But if you live in the upper-midwest you have months of Polar Vortex in front of you. There’s a lot of ways you can go here, but it’s hard to argue with one of the ready to build kits from Swift Fly Fishing / Epic Rods. Not only are they the best ready to assemble kit out there, the actions of these rods are superb and you can choose between multiple colors of most blanks. The kits may seem a little pricy at first, but if you’ve ever sat down and ordered all the different components from 3 different catalog’s you know the value of a ready to go kit. Order it now so it’s ready to go!

CLEAN OUT YOUR BOAT BAG

I actually just did this one the other day, and my reel bag and all my tangles lines and shooting heads along with it. Apparently I’ve either purchased or stolen over 25 verse-leaders from headhunters fly shop in the last year. I am pretty excited that my gear is ready to go, no matter wheat the river or discipline. For years I have done this the night before my first guide trip of the season. Or not at all. A lot of times I end up with some lines, flies and old spools of tippet that I know younger anglers would appreciate and I pay that stuff forward. If it’s not going back in my tackle bag today, it never will. If you decide to switch back and forth between compartment fly boxes and foam fly boxes each year – like I often do – this project may take several days.

ICE FISHING

I never really got into this one.

CLEAN ALL OF YOUR FLY LINES

This is a Mark Raisler special. I think he does it every morning, not just when it’s below zero. But it’s still a great project and you’ll forget about it until you make that first false cast weeks down the road. Loon makes some great line cleaning products.

CHECK YOUR WADERS FOR LEAKS… AND CLEAN THEM!

You’ll never do this when the season gets into full swing. Perfect chore and doesn’t take nearly as long to find and fix the leaks once you get a few tips from the wader repair page over at the Simms Fishing Wader Repair page.

OK, that should at least get you through lunch, unless you headed over to Facebook after reading this. Looks like things will be fishable next week, but still a bit on the cold side. See you after the Polar Vortex![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Friday Flick – Cadent

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/193970500″][vc_column_text]Everyone loves the fall, and this will only remind you why. Judging by the mega-views on Vimeo, you’ve probably already seen it, but we thought worth posting as it’s so good. This should be in the “Best of the Web” category at next years Drake Film Awards.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Shooting Line can be a Drag – More from Mike McCune

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/193638623″][vc_column_text]More from the Godfather, Mike McCune. One of the most common questions I get at our spey clinics is “how do I manage and handle my running line while spey casting?”. I try to avoid answering this. It’s a personal thing, and there are many opinions and methods for accomplishing this task. Hold line with two-hands or one? Bottom hand or top? Or my mouth? big loops or small? And on and on and on…

In this short video, Mike gives you a basic method for short line management and one for longer amounts of line. If you constantly battle shooting line drag, watch this. I also like this variation from Deneki.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Mike McCune – Perry Poke Video

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/193603477″][vc_column_text]If you haven’t had a chance to attend one of our clinics with Mike McCune – and wife Whitney Gould – this will give you an idea what it’s like to spend the day with him on the water. For those who don’t know, Mike is a longtime AK/WA/OR/CA Steelhead, Salmon and Trout guide. and one of the Godfathers of Skagit Casting and line design. We’re fortunate to have mike spend a little time with us each spring. Some of our staff go spend a little time with him each fall on the Grande Ronde as Dewey and Braden did last month.

Mike and I like to shoot these short videos while out on the river. No plan really, just pull the boat over, turn on the camera and let Mike share some knowledge from years of fishing and guiding. We usually pick a topic that we falls under “frequently asked questions”. He’s an excellent communicator and his visually descriptive terminology will help you become a better caster. I like to keep the camera close so you can watch his hands and feel the rhythm. Most viewers would prefer to watch a wide angle speycast shot from a distance, fluorescent line booming a hundred fifty feet over the water. But you’ll learn more by watching what happens inside the circle.

Here, Mike shows us how to perform the Perry Poke. To be specific, a downstream shoulder, right-handed, river left Perry Poke. Mike also shares some thoughts on ultra-short Skagit Trout heads, anchor point importance and more. When I go fishing with Mike here on the Missouri, this is the cast I see him performing most often. It’s a simple and effective cast. As Mike says, “it’s a good fishing cast”. Agreed.

If you’re interested in improving your spey casting skill set, watch it at least once. After that, turn off the volume and just watch Mike’s hands over and over again.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
