Tying Ninchs Bubble Yum Scud

Tying the Bubble Yum Scud

When you think about the Mighty Mo, and nymphing, you think of scuds, sows, and in the winter months…Pink!

Ninchs…I looked up how to make last names plural, so I think this is right…Bubble Yum Scud today on the HH Blog.

Check this baby out. It has a heavy tungsten bead to get you to depth rapidly. And if you are not a fan of using split shot to get your flies into the zone, you will love the Bubble Yum. It’ll get you there.

A guide fly for sure as this is commonly a pattern that lives on the upper end of many Missouri River full-timers nymph rig.

Scuds catch fish on the Missouri River. And many other similar resources around America.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Watch before you Cast A short by Orvis

This is a great short from our friends over at Orvis. We love to watch fish rise, fish feed either on the surface or subsurface. Learning about fish feeding behavior is fun. And really important for those who like to use the net more often.

The Missouri River requires watching as well. We watch a lot.

Well, those who catch a ton. Those who wanna be the Hare? Not as many as the Tortoise.

Hail Mary QB’s? Not many of them get to the HOF. We see lots of Hail Mary anglers. They don’t carry a net with them…if you know what I mean.

Understand the rise form, the feeding behavior, what makes that specific fish tick.

Watch and learn.

I have become, in the last 3 or 4 years, a believer in casting at the center of the feeding lane. Let’s say the fish moves to and fro 18″ Or even farther. Sometime you find a fish moving back ad forth across a couple feet. Occasionally in the fastest section of moving water, sometimes over in the pond/slack water/back eddy region. The fish moves back and forth searching for food. I am a believer in casting, presenting the fly perfectly, where the fly can be presented perfectly.

The center of the bell curve, the line in the center is where you want your drift to be. At least when fishing towards many of our rising fish on the MO. A moving back and forth fish. Which we do see often during spinner falls. Later, after the majority of the insects have passed us headed downstream, the fish gotta ind food and they will move across current lines searching and feeding.

So, why would you ever toss the fly to the flat side of the bell curve. The center axis, the line vertically thru the center of the bell curve above, is the hot zone man.  Drift your fly thru the hot zone. Perfectly.

Not badly thru the flat side of the curve. The pond, the back eddy where he rose twice.

He has risen in the center of the bell curve 17 times. On the fast side 4 times, the slow or stopped side twice. The center 17 times.

So, do what any smart angler would do and make good drifts near fish. Good drifts around fish. Good drifts in the center of the bell curve.

And by watching you can do this sort of thing. Have success.

The angler and the watcher in the video above speak about this right when she hooks the fish. Sometimes you gotta err on the “better drift side!”

Because we all know that good drifts catch fish.

The goal of any of the dry fly stuff, or headhunting like these two are, fishing at a specific trout, is catching the trout.

Just like business, just like trout fishing. Go with the averages for the most success. Do what the numbers tell you. Do some research, some washing, some learning…to do more catching![/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=339&v=Qk-FyiIPA2Q&feature=emb_logo”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Love this pattern. Has been responsible for many trout during the Swing Season.

You like stripping? Yeah, we do too. It works!

Tie this feller up this winter or this late fall for 2019, and the future. 2020! It’s right around the corner.

Buy one for yourself and one as a gift!

Integrate differing colored beads, body color, tail. A fly you can run with. And pretty easy. Remember to spend your dollars with the shop that provides your daily Missouri River entertainment. New, no. Cool, yes.

I have watched this a ton of times. And I’m gonna watch it many more today.

I love watching good casters. It never gets old. Mental training is important in the learning process.

Lots of folks do not know what kind of learner they are. See’r, do’er, feeler, understander. I’m a Understander 1st, and a see’r 2nd. So watching Mike make those fundamental casts gets me further down the road.

Then I can go out and try to replicate the simplicity of his stroke.

And, sometimes it works. Getting on the water with a rod in your hand for countless hours is how you move forward. Very difficult to assume Rock Star status with out standing knee deep in a run for countless, hours.

Enjoy the video. One of my favorites. Tuesday today. Thursday begins the Trout Spey Camp. Looking forward to a weekend of two handed fun![/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/129327269″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Tying Tuesday @ Headhunters of Craig

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Tying Tuesday @ Headhunters of Craig

The Sparrow is a fly that flat out works.

Commonly swung through Missouri River Trout Spey runs.

Or employed with a single hander while fishing the RIO Single Handed Spey Line. Squeeky’s favorite single handed line for fall skinny water weed bed hovering, plucking, surprising, sneaking, stalking…

An easy caster, true feel, solid hook-ups. A line that makes me forget I’m tossing a streamer line.

Honest, that line is fantastic. Try it. You’ll like it. Line technologies continue to impress me. Whether it be from the gang in Idaho Fall or east of us in Michigan. While rod technologies move forward I could argue that fly line tapers, technologies, and applications are moving at a breakneck pace.

Whoa! Off track per usual. The Sparrow. Tie it. Fish it. Love it.

Plus how cool is it at the bar when asked what you were using out there today to state confidently…

A Sparrow Bro’.

This Jack Gartside pattern has fooled tons of fish. While fresh patterns will catch not only our eyes but the trout out there, classic patterns like the Sparrow never fall from style. So many of the current fly patterns incorporate flashy tunnel like synthetics. Not the Gartside Sparrow. Just the like the most classic of streamer patterns, ie Woolly Bugger, this fly hangs onto fame without contemporary bling.

After learning how to tie the pattern you can implement any color scheme you desire. Like the October Caddis would look dazzling to those trout with autumn caddis interests. Yummy!

The Sparrow is part of our extensive proprietary Fly Tying Kits line Just Add Vise. Check out all of the Just Add Vise Kits that include enough hooks, materials, and video to tie 25 flies!

Come by the shop and check out the Missouri River Canyons best trout spey fly selection. There is no comparison in the Tri-County region.

Buzzball Fly Tying Just Add Vise

A great fly for the Mo. Squeeky’s favorite summertime app tern.

Been tossing it the past couple weeks. A good time for sure.

It is not red hot, yet. It will be.

No wing profile recognition, no negative reinforcement of the trout. Looks like garbage. The kind of garbage that trout eat. Here, on the Mighty Mo.

Buy this pattern in the shop. We have them in several sizes up to size 18. For baby junk eaters.

Buy this Just Add Vise Tying Kit in store as well. Or online.

Watch the video, then tie the fly. You cannot foul this fly up man. It looks even better if it is tied, un-neatly. Sloppy in fact. Those who tie this fly too neatly, don’t get it.

Fish it with confidence. Created for the junk eaters at Jackson Rock by Gary LaFontaine a couple decades back.

Enjoy your Hump Day. It is the day before The Weeknd starts. Be safe!

You will only employ this cast 99 out of 100 casts on the Missouri River.

So, pretty important here.

Otherwise, you can practice casting near and around the fish rising. Eating. Waiting for the fish to inhale the fly.

Ben Hardy says…

“This is the show. Practice at home where practice should be done. Fish well when you get here. That is what pro’s do. Practice on the front end.”

You could use another slackline cast as well. Or just this one. The Reach Mend.

It is pretty important. If you want to catch fish here. Utilize it. Often.

A local classic that I first saw fishing with Mark Daly and LT back in the day. Don’t know who created it, but one of those two certainly had their hands in it. Both long time Mo River anglers and two of Squeeky’s influences for sure. Learned a ton about the river from both of those cats.

Throw Back Thursday brings you Depth Perception by Scumliner Media. This throwback vid filmed in late July 2011.

You coming this late July? How about August? 2018, an to some extent 2017, was a unreal August experience. Really uncommon to have top notch dry fly fishing of the ilk we witnessed this previous August.

Will it happen again?

The combo you want is…No anglers. Lots of fish rising.

While it may not happen again, would you want to be here if it did? Book your Late July or August trip today. IT will make your May Thursday go by a little quicker. Operators standing by to take your call, answer your questions, and get you lodging too.

Calm, light moisture in the air, and quiet this 2nd day of May. We too are thinking about the summer months, dry flies, and cool drinks.

Practice Week continues with Tim Rajeff

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Practice Week continues with Tim Rajeff

Well, we agree with everything Tim Rajeff is talking about. You should too.

A key phrase he mentioned in the opening is that practice happens when you are away from the fish. Practice does not happen when you are staring at rising trout. Your cast does not have an opportunity to improve when your knees are quivering with the sight of rising fish.

Practice. Pros practice. Those who catch more trout practice.

Do you practice swinging your golf clubs? Do you see the Course Pro once in a while? Annually?

It’s not like we here at Headhunters are telling you to go out in the garage and lift weights!

It’s casting practice. 10 minutes. Fun stuff. Stuff you can do while drinking beer. Double fun stuff.

Develop your casting practice routine and catch more fish this year.

Headhunters is your Missouri River Eduction Source here in Craig Montana. We can help. Casting lessons available from our in house experts who are well versed in teaching casting skills.

SA Casting Loop Video

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

SA Casting Loop Video

#1 error from casters that I see in the boat? They never stop the rod on either the fore or aft cast. Perpetual motion.

Analogous to throwing a dart, you must stop the forward motion of the rod.

You have to stop the rod. You have to. It is a must.

It is physics. I don’t make that poop up man. Many guests believe I am speaking gibberish.

And, some of them are right?

I always say that the fishing stuff spurting from my mouth is true. All of the non-fishing diarrhea emanating from my person? Straight BS.

See folks. Watch the video. I’m not making it up!

Watch that fellers rod stop on the front and back. It stops. Like your hand hitting a brick wall. It stops.

And there is a pause to let the line straighten. You cannot push fly line. No matter how hard or fast or whippy you try.

You gotta stop the rod. There is not a substitute for this.

Do yourself a favor in 2019 and take some casting lessons. BEFORE YOU COME TO THE RIVER.

You know professionals take lessons every day. Professionals have casting instructors. Yes they do. Honest. Speaking with Whitney Gould a couple weeks ago, who is currently the Women’s World Champion Spey Caster, while she was on a break from her casting instructor. Yes, the best in the world have casting instructors. The best in the world have casting instructors.

So, many of us do not fish 100+ days a year. We may only fish 3 days a year. Those anglers also need casting lessons. Honest.

The best in the world get coaching. Lots of coaching.

Guide Ben Hardy always says that when you come here you are not to practice your cast. The Missouri River is the SHOW! You don’t practice your baseball swing when you get to the World Series? Nope.

So practice happens before you get here. In your lawn on Sundays for 10 minutes a week. Or seek out a casting professional and raise the bar man. Preferably both.

I have had guests do just that. Get casting lessons. Practice for short periods of time before you arrive. Don’t go and practice for an hour. Nobody casts fro an hour straight. Shorter periods of practice, more often That is a recipe for casting success.

Do you know the outcome of practicing? More trout to hand. More success. Bigger smiles.

Yes, bigger smiles.

And life is too short to trim the smiles from your day.

Chasing the Taper Trailer

Chasing the Taper Trailer

Chasing the Taper Trailer

I do own a couple bamboo rods made by the boys at Sweetgrass Bamboo Rods. They are both great. Love to fish them.

Occasionally.

I do like the action, the history, and the look of that sweet bamboo!

Most of the time I do throw a hyper fast dry fly stick. Most do on the Mo. The right tool for the job.

You cannot replace the fantastic feel of casting, hooking, and fighting a dry fly fed brown trout with that classic piece of history.

Enjoy the trailer today on the HH blog.

Damn cold this morning at -9F with a 6″+ compliment of snow fro this last dump. We have to all the way til tomorrow to receive our next dose of the white stuff. Our winter is strong and it looks like we will have a favorable water season ahead.[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/219031832″ video_title=”1″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Project Video

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Project Video

We couldn’t say it better ourselves. A film supporting the Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Act.

It truly is a special place. The entire drainage. Love seeing our friend Stefan Larrson in this short. Love seeing the beauty of the Blackfoot. We love the smell of the westside. The fishing. The feeling. The entire package.

Check out more @ www.blackfootclearwater.org

We fish across the divide as often as we can get over there. It is just fabulous. Check in with Headhunters if you want to head over to the westside. Mark, John, Brett, Ben, Braden are all interested in helping you discover the Blackfoot.

Sign a letter of support if you want to your kids and their kids to enjoy the Blackfoot River for generations to come!

More snow in the canyon this morning. 6F and another 4 inches last night and this morning. Snowing now. Gonna snow-blow at the shop so we can get around!

Rarely see as much snow on the ground as we have now. It keeps coming. But the amount of snow here and the snow that we have in the mountains are two different things. We want more in the mountains. Here in Craig at 3400′ it really does not make an impact on our summer flows. At all. But it does show that winter and snow accumulation is indeed happening.

Long weekend. Watch conservation videos. Tie flies. Nap. Clean your fly lines. Organize fly boxes. Shovel snow.

Headhunters closing early Sunday for a bowling affair about 1pm.

UV Para Ant Just Add Vise Tying Kit

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

UV Para Ant Just Add Vise Tying Kit

UV Para Ant Fly Tying Kit

The ant is a popular fly for the Missouri about 6 months of the year. Those who do not believe in the nat, that is OK. Ant believers are using the net more often! Both cinnamon and black ants are on the trout diet list! Blind fish it, sight fish it, just fish it to those finicky Missouri River risers!

What a great time of year to tie up some summer flies. February is not all that great for being outside, other than skiing! So if you like to hang out in your basement, in front of the TV, or at your work desk tying up some “summer love” be sure to include the UV Para Ant!

These kits are designed for tyers who have grasped the basic moves of fly tying, and are priced just as if you bought the materials individually.

The package comes with everything needed to tie 2 dozen flies, and has a material list included so you can re-supply when needed. You can watch our short “how-to” videos if you need help with a step or two. These are super popular, and are great for those camped out on the Missouri River or camped out binge watching Leave it to Beaver.

All is well in downtown Craig. Snow on the ground. Wind blowing. Anglers angling.

Can be Groundhog Day here in Craig. Fishing. Everyday. And Joe’s. That is the other outlet. And that’s it for the winter months.

Short mental breaks are good for your 4th season constitution. This vid will do it. Really cool.

Enjoy your weekend! If you find yourself in Craig, swing in for a cup of coffee.

Check out the vid below too. The first one I saw about a year or two ago was this one. 3:38 of super sick longboard DH action! Firebead Ray Just Add Vise Tying Kit

Tie this one up for winter water.

If this is not in your box for the winter and spring fishing here on the Mo, you must not fish here often!

The coming out of this specific pattern was in 2008. HH had it. High water was here. This was the bug that you had to have.

Now a winter staple as well as a spring time producer. Tie them up in a coulee different shades like pink, gray-pink, and gray. And tan is the sleeper!

Tie them up. If not, swing by the shop, or order online here!

Fly Shop Strong Small Biz Saturday!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Fly Shop Strong Small Biz Saturday!

Shop at your favorite local small businesses today.

And tomorrow.

I do some speaking in a few communities every off season. I often hear complaints from the guests that there is not a local fly shop. About how there once was, and that they have to travel lots of miles to visit a fly shop, and how great it would be to have the shop back in the community.

I don’t know the circumstances of those failed businesses. I don’t claim to know. But what I do know that if you spend your fishing dollars with big box stores, discounters, or online only businesses…you will not have a specialty retailer nearby.

Small businesses are important for your community. The dollars stay locally. The dollars support locals. That local is you. You have to make the call, it is your decision.

The only one it hurts is everybody. Those mega businesses will survive. What might not is your local fly shop.

Only 400 fly shops in America, 500 worldwide. Is it important to shop at them?

You have to make that decision. What’ll you decide?[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/248387067″ video_title=”1″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Heading out of a strong Zep-tember in style.

This is the official film video of the Immigrant Song 1972. Produced by the band. Raw rock and roll. The way Page gets after it in the latter half of the song is pretty rad. That guy must have sold his soul. They always claim it was Plant. But we all know Page went deep.

Snowed Saturday night. Not a lot. But snow. Sleet really.

We are damn excited to move into the 10th month. October is great.

Should have a fantastic BWO event this year. All the indications are pointing that direction.

We will have to wait and see. But, don’t wait to book your fall trip to the Mo.

Blackfoot River: Always Worth The Trip Video

Blackfoot River: Always Worth The Trip Video

While the Missouri River is on fire, not the flame kind, but the fishing kind…we always have the Blackfoot River on our mind.

Freestones. Love ’em. Big flies. Cutthroats. Westside of the Divide. The smell of Pine Trees.

All good things.

Watch this re-run today and dream of small streams along with the babbling sound of water.  Ten book your Blackfoot River trip with Headhunters.

Couple it with a day or three on the Mighty Mo and you tell have a great Autumn trip planned.

September is a great month to fish the Blackfoot. No people, hungry cutty’s, large mayflies, fall colors.

Close your eyes and dream of the feel of a raft seat…and shrieking eagles.

Happy Friday.

Reach Cast Video Scumliner Media

Reach Cast Video Scumliner Media Classics

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Reach Cast Video Scumliner Media

A Headhunters Classic.

Timely information. Water is dropping. Fish are looking upwards.

You don’t have to bring a reach cast to the Mo. But you do have to bring some sort of slack line presentation style. Or not.

Mad Reach Cast Style is important here.

That straight line BS does not fool as many trout fishing the Missouri River.

Accuracy is kind of a big deal too.

Those who practice those kind of things do better when they arrive at the show.

As Lead Guide Ben Hardy always saysWhen fishing the Missouri you don’t practice on the run, or even towards rising fish. This time is not for practice, it’s the Show!

He’s right. Practice at home. Employ those casting and presentation skills during your stay.

It’s the Show!

FOMO, on the MO?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

FOMO, on the MO?

July and August will be real good the year.

Do you have Fear of Missing Out? FOMO? Some do. Others don’t.

If you do, then you should get in on the latter part of July into August post high water season for real good high quality low pressure dry fly fishing here in Craig Montana fishing Montana’s Missouri River.

Don’t get Mo River FOMO. That’s bad.

Put of booking your summer fly fishing trip to the Mo? What no more. The water is dropping, currently sell under 18K, and will be throughout the month. Will we get into dry fly fishing this month? Ohhhhh, maybe. I think we will.

Having said that I was wrong on the flows this spring, so you may not believe me. But just as my last guest in the boat straight outta Calgary reminded me the I say often…Trust me, I’m a guide.

PMD’s start soon. Caddis have been seen in good numbers on the lower. Trico’s get rolling in early July. Grasshoppers will see the light in July into August. Strong dry fly angling throughout the summer will occur. Honest.

Probably not as many weeds wither. Generally following high water years the weeds do not bother as bad.

So call up the shop and relieve your Mo River FOMO, bro’.

It’ll make you feel better today, and tomorrow.

High Water Nymphing Technique Video

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

High Water Nymphing Technique Video Headhunters Fly Shop

Ed Note: Been asked several times to replay on the blog again. For those of you who have not yet arrived we will have high water for the month of June. It will not go down. The water levels may rise. There may not be dry fly fishing this month. If at all it will be in the last week of the month, June. High water nymphing daily here on the Mighty Mo. Deep rigs at 9′ plus from bobber to split shot…and beyond. Again, if you are a dry fly angler, you will not be using too much Gink this month. High water conditions will persist throughout the month.

This is going way back to our last High Water session in 2011. This high water nymphing technique video is right on.

Sara is rowing, Mark is babbling once again, John records it all.

Check the vid out. Come by the shop and ask questions. Head to the river and try your high water hand.

Douglas Rods Upstream Plus Fly Rod @ Headhunters of Craig Montana

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Douglas Rods Upstream Plus Fly Rod @ Headhunters of Craig Montana

The Upstream PLUS provides more power than the Douglas Upstream ultra-lite series. It gives the angler a solid up-locking reel seat for fighting larger fish. Most importantly, it provides a slightly faster action that makes the Upstream PLUS a great choice for people who want enough muscle to land the fish of a lifetime and enough finesse to use the tippet and flies required in tough, technical situations.

The Upstream PLUS is a very special rod. It’s just the right size, with just the right flex. If you need to protect light tippets, if you’re casting the whole line or short distances, if you’re fishing to spooky trout where delicacy is required, if you need precise cast between 20 and 70 feet, these rods can get it all done. The Upstream PLUS rods are a casters dream. The time and effort spent fighting with your rods to make the right cast is a thing of the past.

Come by Headhunters Fly Shop this summer and find out what the buzz is about. These rods are great to cast and what the Headhunters gang really likes is the fun had while fishing them. Light, quick, responsive, and fun. Yes, fun to fish.
