From several years back…

This was the precursor for the Classic Scumliner HH Flick Somewhere Out West.

Sunday in Craig Montana.

The weather while not much for snowmaking or water generation for the summer, has provided a great period for winter fishing.

We will certainly need more snow for a good Drift Boat Sledding Session this winter…

Do your snow dance, safely inside your house, hidden from your children, to encourage snow this winter. Do it for our rivers!

Tuesday Fly Casting Tactics w/ Simon Gawesworth

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Tuesday Fly Casting Tactics w/ Simon Gawesworth

A great tip from Simon Gawesworth fo RIO Line Company today. Tuesday here in Craig and all is well.

The fly shop staff is out on the casting lane often fine tuning personal casting issues. Should they be out there more often? Well I won’t criticize here on this blog. What I do know is that you cannot fine tune all of the casting changes you personally need to make while fishing.

Casting issues, changing your cast, improving your overall effectiveness with a fly rod in hand takes time. That time is now. That time is not with fly rod in hand casting at difficult bank feeders. In July. No, that is not the time to learn, that is the time to execute.

So a heads up, as I always remind you this time of year, is to practice now. Make those changes now.

Changes take time. It does not happen rapidly. It happens over lots of casting sessions.

The key to success on any of these learning objectives is to do lots of mini sessions. Do not try to do hour long marathons. Nope. Short 5-10 minute sessions will allow you to advance quicker. Long overdrawn exhaustive learning sessions are not smart. Regression will happen!

Get your practice rod out and get going. January is the time to begin the improvements.

I practice with the fly line I will be using to take it to the next level when I get to the “Show!” So I use the Headhunter Fly Line during practice on the lawn, with hoops for targets, to gain accuracy. First cast is the best cast, and the winter months is when and where you develop those skills.

Headhunters Guides including me, Squeaky Oar Lock, are available for casting lessons any time of the year. Call the shop today and get your casting lessons set up this spring!

Be better in 2021!

Missouri River Winter Fly Patterns. Pink Lightening Bug Tying Video

Pink Lightening Bug Tying Video brought to you today by Headhunters Fly Shop, Just Add Vise Tying Kits, and the Missouri River.

Ed Note: We are about plumb out of Just Add Vise Kits. So we have not has them available online. But, but We have a HH crack staffer named Steve on the job. When will they be available? I don’t know. Could be for the Christmas season? But I do know that we will tell you about it here first!

Ever fished the Missouri River near Craig in the winter months? No? Our strong suggestion is that you have a few of these bouncing around in your winter Missouri River box.

It sells really well in the winter months states Headhunters Fly Shop longtime Derrick. I wouldn’t go out there without them. What if they get on them? You better have a handful.

Or you can just tie them. Easy-peasy. Just watch the short video below by John Arnold and whip up a few dozen.

If they work, you can sell your buddy a couple for $5/fly. Or more…

Have seen some fish come from that winter type of water already. Water temps are dipping rapidly and the fish will adapt quickly. Slow ass water with a pink fly. That is the winter Missouri River mantra.

November is a soft month for angler pressure. Even lighter in December. Both great months for you to find yourself standing knee deep!

This is the bug you need for fall. Spring, summer, and winter too.

If you fish the Mo, then you know you need this.

Love to tie this from the bend of my oversized Adams fishing October thru at least Thanksgiving.

The unweighted version is money. While the Tung-headed pattern can help you get down there where they live.

Snowing hard last night dumped a few inches on the ground here. A bit of a respite today, then back at ‘er on Friday with 5+ inches. Maybe 10 inches!

A good day to tie flies. And many of our guides are. When the wind calms, they will head out and make a couple casts. I may as well.

Come by the shop if you don’t want to tie any up. We have lots of them. And in several versions. With or without beads. Many many flavors too. Headhunters has the Best Flies Under the Big Sky and this fall is no different. We got the flies!

We like this fly. We like cripples here on the Mo. We like small flies. We like CDC. We like the baetis fly. So consequently we like the Smoke Jumper.

A no frills pattern that looks like the bug. Try the post in darker colors as well for the common glare conundrum here commonly experienced on the Missouri River. A dark post shows well against the slate gray autumn sky.

The river is heating up. Better every day right now. Tie up some fun fall flies this week as you prep for your annual October journey to Mother Mo.

August nymphing requires lots of patience, potential weeds crowding your fly, and the Clouser Crayfish. Or a Zirdle.

A top fly for many nymphers this time of year. Add a split shot or not. Many let it ride as you drift over waving grass and bucket filled moving waters. The takes can be violent. Sometimes looks like the fish ate going 100 mph! The bobber certainly moves.

Six feet! If you cannot se the Indi move that far, fly fishing may not be your game?

One of our favorite “big nymphs” here on the Missouri, and it’s popular for bass and trout other places as well. We’ve put together this Clouser Crayfish fly tying kit with everything you need to tie 2 dozen flies. Perfect for yourself or as a gift.

Enjoy your Thursday. Seasonal temps here today with daytime highs in the mid 70’s. Warmer again as we move into next week.

Dead Flies Don’t Swim Video & 5 Things to Never Do Dry Fly Fishing

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Dead Flies Don’t Swim Video & 5 Things to Never Do Dry Fly Fishing

Water levels falling this week we think. They fell yesterday by a couple thousand and will fall again today below 9K. Hooray.

The dry fly bite yesterday was damn good as well. More to come as we get into the true dry fly period with water levels appropriate for the season.

Today we show you again Dead Flies Don’t Swim. A classic HH vid by Scumliner Media that shows the joys of July.

Dead Flies Don’t Swim is also branded on our dry fly specific fly line. We believe in the slogan. Meaning? Dragging flies do not get eaten by our voracious trout. Perfect dead drifts get us through the day for sure.

5 Things to Never Do Dry Fly Fishing

  1. Drag your fly. Dead Flies Don’t Swim. Dead bugs do not move on the water. The primary diet of our trout here in Central Montana is dead flies. Spinners, cripples, scents.
  2. Think you are good enough to toss the first cast into the lane and hope. Dude. I don’t know any body that good. Prep for a couple minutes and make the appropriate drift before you alert the enemy you are in the neighborhood. All men over 50 do this. Almost all. I’ve had a couple in the boat that don’t. Maybe a few. But not a lot. Fellers do this everyday. It’s bad. Catch more fish and practice a bit outside of the trout.
  3. Make your goal to catch the trout. Don’t foul it up early in the game. Make a plan. Execute. No plan?No fish. Guessing again? If you are a guesser, and I think you may be, then your goal is not to catch that trout. You can see everything. The fish rising, the fly floating not dragging, the fly. All the variables are in front of you. You can see them all. No secrets. No guessing. DOn’t guess your fly over there.
  4. Shoot line on rising trout. Most dry fly ops are within 30′. Some 25′. You do not have to shoot line 30′. Nope. Cast it with accuracy. Don’t shoot line at a 30′ target. You are guessing every cast. And that is bad.
  5. Get too close to another angler while dry fly fishing. Lots of water out there. Respect others water. BE smart. Don’t be that guy. You know. That guy the dick.

Zirdle Bug Just Add Vise Kit and Video

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Zirdle Bug Just Add Vise Kit and Video

Many are fishing the Zirdle as the top fly on the deep water nymph rig.

Emulates crayfish, or just something that resembles food.

A popular fly throughout the summer months. And in August you will want this fly on your rig. The Zirdle is also a bug that leaves fly bins early in the season. Why not tie up a couple dozen for your trip to the Mo this year? A smart move!

With the water deeper today and maybe the near future tie this and toss at banks that are 2′-4′ deep. Hold on.

Enjoy this Tuesday in Craig. Raining still. Yesterday rained cats and dogs, all day long.

Dry fly fishing still good. Gotta look a bit harder. Good PMD hatch Monday as well. Caddis will take them on top as well. Find you bug and fish it.

Even if it is a Zirdle.

Tuesday Tying Video from the JAV Family

Tuesday Tying Video from the JAV Family

Buzzball Fly Tying

A great fly for the Mo. Squeeky’s favorite summertime pattern!

Been tossing it the past couple weeks. A good time for sure.

It is not red hot, yet. It will be.

No wing profile recognition, no negative reinforcement of the trout. Looks like garbage. The kind of garbage that trout eat. Here, on the Mighty Mo.

In my conversations with Gary in the 90’s here on the river I also found that he believed that the fussy-ness of this pattern and the ability to trap air bubbles underneath the fly gives the impression that the insect is decomposing. And decomposing insects are easy to eat. They don’t move. They are dead. And we all know that Dead Flies Don’t Swim!

Broken down proteins are easier to digest making this food source ideal for fat fast growing Missouri River trout.

If you have witnessed fast moving aggressive PMD subsurface feeding behaviors you already know that picking something from the surface or damn near it that does not move is much more efficient than the former actions. And that is why bits and pieces of dead and decomposing insects make up a large percentage of the Missouri River top water diets.

Check out the fly bins of your Missouri River fly shops and you will not see a wide variety of high floating flies. Not too many dun or adult patterns. They will be mostly comprised of flies that rest in the film. Emergers, cripples, and spinners.

Make Headhunters your first stop on the Mo. We carry the Best Flies Under the Big Sky!

Fishing Licenses, flies, river maps, info, in a clean sanitary environment.

Buy this pattern at the shop in downtown Craig Montana. We have them in several sizes up to size 18. For baby junk eaters.

Watch the video, then tie the fly. You cannot foul this fly up man. It looks even better if it is tied, un-neatly. Sloppy in fact. Those who tie this fly too neatly, don’t get it.

Fish it with confidence. Created for the junk eaters at Jackson Rock by Gary LaFontaine a few decades back.

Tuesday and all is well here on the Mo. The Buzzball will get on the list of the top flies of the summer. Until then you can count on the Translucent Emerger or Pupa to get you through the day. Or a PMD Cripple is and has been hot. Spinners, spents, knock-downs. All good flies for the time being as we move through the early summer session.

And for those PMD lovers we have fully stocked PMD nymph bins. And you will need them out on the Mo for the next 2 months. A fly that will grace your rig for the future!

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]The Mighty Zep with the Rain Song for the rain we have received this weekend.

Posted this first 5 years ago. Been listening to the Mighty Zep a bunch this past month. The Rain Song has been in my Top 5 Zeppelin Tunes List since I first gave it a listen about 40 years ago.

Raining cats and dogs here in Craig this evening. It’ll blow out the Dearborn and increase the flows on the Mo as well.

Looking for a possible 10K the front end of the week. Of course keep it here for the update first as the Headhunters is the only information source you trust in Craig Montana and beyond. We keep you up to date of all things Missouri River.

Look for wetter skies coupled with cooler daytime and nighttime highs as we move through the weekend into the work week ahead.

Changes for sure. LPP, Dearborn, and Missouri River rising. Changing fishing conditions will be a given. You can bet on that.

Fish rise until 13K. But not well. Under 10K would be appreciated. 6K is great. 7k OK. 8k not too great. 9K not good. 10K and beyond is a nymphing only show. Hope you are tying up some wire worms and sow bugs. If you are not ,we got ’em here at HH of Craig.

What will the week ahead bring for bugs on the surface? Don’t know. I do know that yesterday in the canyon produced no bugs. None. Today? Probably the same.

We can assume that the BWO’s have run their course. The March Browns? Probably gone as well. Mothers Day Caddis? I would guess that there are some more left in our system? How many? I don’t know that answer.

Working towards the weekend on this hump day. Warm again today. No wind though!

Nymphing red hot. The remainder of the disciplines not as good per above. Streamer anglers? Toss ’em if you want.

Enjoy your Hump Day! Tie up some spinners of the PMD variety for the next couple months. Last year was an epic PMD event for 10+ weeks. This year? Let’s hope it is similar.

Summer is coming to a river near year. The Mighty Mo. Look us up in Craig for all things Missouri River. Your entertainment, information, education, and customer service experts in Craig!

This highly popular Rusty Spinner pattern by the Harrop family is a killer when fishing June and July on our home water here in central Montana.

We fish it a ton. Biot bodied sparsely hackled almost floating fly that make brown trout move from their lane.

Yessir. That is the kind of move you want fish to make. Moving to take a fly is one way to make the fish behave aggressively. If you can get them to move, yes make them move, you got ’em.

This available in one of our Just Add Vise Tying Kits. Yep you get enough materials to tie 25 of these babies. All included int he kit. Plus this video with a QR code on the package and you can tie it in your tent if you wish! 25 hooks, boots, hackles, for you to get 25 ready for the coming season. Buy it online if you so desire. But not right now…We are getting these very popular tying kits put back together after the thinning of the herd this March and April!

A Rusty Spinner has long been the favorite fly amongst summer dry fly anglers. If you can’t get them on anything else, tie on a Rusty Spinner and fish it till you he eats it.

It’ll work. Honest.

Trust me, I’m a fishing guide…[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/121434150″]

The Longhorn Beetle today on the Tuesday Tying Video from Headhunters Fly Shop of Craig Montana.

Beetles on the Mo? Yep. Not right now. But I have seen lots of black flying ants!

You don’t have to fish it if you don’t want too. But I will let you know that many of the long timers here use the black beetle wish smashing success. It is not talked about a lot.

But I’d have a couple in your box. Just in case?!

While many of the Just Add Vise Kits were plundered during the peak of the Covid Crunch we do have a few Longhorn Beetle JAV Kits in stock and are ready to ship.

Tuesday here in Craig. A good day. Wish you were here!

An oldie but goodie on the Headhunters Blog.

Since you have been practicing casting the entire month we are reminding you to do a bit of this action too.

Some sort of slack line presentation can be important when fishing flat slow moving tailwater and spring creeks.

Fish still don’t like dragging flies.

Dead flies don’t swim.

Cool video from RIO Fly Lines today on the Headhunters Fly Shop Blog.

The Headhunter Fly Line is manufactured by the Idaho Falls gang.

Not very often when you get a peek inside the manufacturing process of a fly line.

Proprietary equipment spits out the lines and, Poof!, we get col fly lines.

I like the magic of this process.

5 Steps to Summer Success

5 Steps to Summer Success

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

5 Steps to Summer Success

In this self-isolation period of our lives we need to do something, anything, to keep ourselves busy. Spending time with your fly rod could be just the answer.

We know you always have the best intentions of practicing your fly cast before you arrive at the World Class Dry Fly Arena here in Craig Montana. But sometimes life gets in the way.

Alas, Covid-19 comes along and allows all kinds of time for practice. Now you will NO EXCUSES when you arrive on the Mighty Mo this summer.

  1. Practice Casting. I say this a lot. Practice Casting. If you do, you will catch more fish. Honest. 10 minutes per session. Get yourself a practice rod if you wish or line up your 9 foot 5 weight and get out there. Run through a couple situations that you may encounter on the river. Try casting with your left hand! Can you can the fly accurately in the wind? At 37 feet without the wind? can you get some extra distance from your cast? But the bottom line is that you just want to have that rod in your hand making friends with your brain. The more rod in hand time, the better your success rate on the river this summer!
  2. Organize your kit bag, boat bag, fly fishing closet. The biggest task on this is becoming familiar with our tools. And tossing out shit you do not need. Or giving it away. That garbage has to go. Any of those items you are saving for your grandkids…toss out or give to charity. Then buy them something they want, or is designed for them, at that moment. ‘Nuff said.
  3. Create a valid First Aid Kit. I like to have all kinds of care items in my kit from an arm splint, eye irrigant, Benadryl , Ibuprofen, Whiskey, lots of Band-Aids in varying sizes!, Neosporin. The ready to go kits are pretty awesome. It is better than most have already in their boats or vehicles. We love the first aid kit offerings from NRS in Idaho. Put one in your car too!
  4. Tie some Just Add Vise Kit Flies. Fruit Roll-Up? Face Plant? Rainbow Czech. Bubble Yum? Corn-Fed Caddis?. Ohh, all good my friends!
  5. Fantasize about summer fly fishing. That is what I do. Close my eyes and watch mental movies of PMD’s coming through the surface! Ohh, yeah, that’s nice.

And, that is all you can do. Practice, organize, fantasize, wash your hands.

PS If you have not read our Covid-19 operations update, it is here.

IT is here. Spring is here in Craig. I felt it last week. A Nic spring afternoon, that felt like spring.

While you may not be able to attend your kids basketball game, cause it is cancelled, you can still go outside.

Why not take that basketball player out to the stream. The original social distancing. You will both get some should points for that activity.

Check out this video from a number of years ago. All fishing done with a dry fly. A fun day for sure. That is out there.

Wait until the snow stops flying here in the canyon…and then step into the river.

The fish could be rising. Let’s hope so.

That would feel good right now.[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/40323097?fbclid=IwAR1j7eBz7m3F-kr7h5Qr9EjExfYQLErilidcvRKmz_duKIPVKX_V05K3ApA”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Casting Video Straight Rod Tip Path

The rod tip path has to be straight.

Convex round rod tip path does not work if you want to improve or move forward in any way in your fly fishing career.

Dropping the rod tip on the fore-cast is never a good idea.

Never. Never ever. It never ever works well. Ever. It is a physics equation, and you folks who are god like…it does not work for you either.

Never. Ever. Never ever.

Classic 1939 Rod Manufacturing Video

Cool vid today not eh HH Blog.

Playoff Football on TV. The Australian Open starts too.

Weather’s the best it has been in at least a week on the river today. Temps well above freezing! Anglers around.

And looks pretty good for the week ahead too.

While the store has been quiet this past week with walk-in traffic the phones have been ringing. A lot. It is the time of year to lock in your dates. The late you wait, the more difficult it becomes. Smart anglers book early.

Check out the vid. Pretty fun to watch. Far more hands touch each fly rod made today. And they are producing higher quality technologically advance products!! We can all appreciate the modern fly rod. And fly lines too!

January. Half way home this month. Winter. Ahh. Hooray.

Casting Tip Today from Tim Rajeff

Casting Tip Today from Tim Rajeff

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Casting Tip Today from Tim Rajeff

One of the great casters, instructors, and minds in todays fishing world. He also makes some pretty popular rods by the name of ECHO.

Tim today talks about Off-Shoulder casting. Truly an important cast here on this big river in Montana we fish daily. The Missouri River in Craig.

Why? Because the wind blows all the time. And sometimes upriver outta the north. Making it difficult. It may not blow against the grain all day long, or it will…nevertheless if you cannot execute this cast, those days will not yield many trout. Or opportunities.

So why not increase your chances and learn this valuable trout casting tool before summer 2020. Winter is a great time to add a couple tools to your box.

I am not one who learns casting on the water. Not enough time for that. When I’m on the water I am fishing. Not practicing. Learning is what you do off the water. Ask any great caster what they do. I know pro athletes don’t learn fundamentals on the field. No way man. Not during game time.

Yes, some yahoo is gonna comment that they can learn new casts, tread in unfamiliar waters, and conjure up some casting brilliance from the ashes of his last cast… on the water. And maybe you can sir. But the casting mortals, which is all of us but you, are best serviced by learning this kind of cast on the lawn. In a casting laboratory.

Yessir. At a time when you can concentrate on the cast. Not the rising trout.

Go out and practice this cast. It will not take much time to learn. Nope. You will pick it up pretty quickly. Because your brain already knows how to cast. And when you need to employ the Off-Shoulder Cast on the water, you will already know how it feels!

That other fella, your fishing partner brother-in-law will be thrashing around tomahawking freely rising trout. Unfortunately he’s the guy who can learn, on the water.

And then turn to you in the back of the boat and say “You wanna give these a shot?”[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/215218143″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Sipping Dry Saturday

Sipping Dry Saturday

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Sipping Dry Saturday

Saturday here on the Mo. Fishable today. A couple cabins rented. Several boats on the water. Coffee drinkers at the shop. Swingers on the water.

And summer conversations on the shop phone. Anglers locking in summer guides and lodging. Now is the time to get your perfect 2020 Craig Montana hook-up.

A classic vid today from Sharptail Media from 8 years ago. We enjoyed shooting this short with Simon.

Arctic temps greet us tonight as we move into the 3rd week of January. Looks like very little fishing will be done Monday thru Friday. Some days the temps will not crawl above the ZERO mark!

Whoa. That is cold. Call first if for some reason you are headed up to Craig. We may not be at the shop the entire time. When the mercury plunges below the ZERO mark we spend less time in the shop. Pretty cold in that shabby little fly shack in Craig! Not really built for winter conditions. More of a summer place…

So today we bring you Sipping Dry. For summer memories. Summer dry fly action. For summer warmth. In this type of weather we must think of the sun, fantasize about Trico hatches, and wait for the snow to go away. The long wait.

Only another 4 or 5 months. That’s all.

January Missouri River Forecast

Missouri River Fly Fishing January Forecast

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Missouri River Fly Fishing January Forecast

January Missouri River Weather Forecast

Pretty stable for the next ten days with air temps in the mid 20’s at night along with daily highs in the mid 30’s. Lots of cloud cover predicted so may be a decent time to fish?

The average temperature for January includes a highs of 35F and lows of 15F with 0.51 inches of precip which adds up to about 9″ of snow. The wind chill can be impressive with winds from the north. The prevailing wind is generally from the southwest which is not nearly as biting as the evil wind. Check out the 2020 totals here on US Climate Great Falls site.

The water temperatures are not terribly cold. Yet. Currently hovering around 35-ish. Bouncing between 35-37F for the past couple weeks. Without the frigid well below zero temperatures for a good long spell the river will not become slushy or un-fishable.

The water levels are holding in the lower than average zone by  about 1400cfs. Don’t know as of posting what the water direction will be before the end of the wet season in June, but we do know our snowpack is below average.

January Fishing Forecast

Cold. Our coldest fishing month. Or one of the top 3. Again we will not know the outcome until later this spring. The non winter-like November and December have led us into quite a boring start for the New Year. Wear warm clothes, warmer socks, and bring your Thermos.

Morning fishing is for those who like to sneak out there before the fish are bothered by the winter sun. Some wait until after breakfast to begin their slow journey to the river. Fish the noon til 4pm slot until the sun stays out later if you like the meat of the day.  As the winter fades to spring then you may begin to enjoy the morning more often. But that is a couple, or a few months away.

Nymphers come on strong in January. The primary attack for fish catching includes anything pink. Or at least start with anything and then figure it out. Firebeads are really a hot ticket in the next couple months. Really strong through the end of spring.

Fish the real winter water all month long. The stale stuff. Almost stopped, yet still moving.  The inside bends towards the end of the moving area. Then focus on depth. The water is pretty low so go with shorter than normal rigs. Split or not is your choice. A house divided on this lead filled topic.

Swingers comprise about half of the winter Missouri River angling participation stats. Skagit fishers are getting fish on the line. Fishing pretty well from top thru the canyon. Check with the shop before heading out for not only boat ramp health but shelf ice coverage.

Rainbow Czech Classic

Fly Tying Thursday Classic Rainbow Czech

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Fly Tying Thursday Classic Rainbow Czech

If you don’t have this fly in your Missouri River box we know one of two things about you.

Wither you are a dry fly guy, or you have not fished the Mo before.

The Rainbow Czech is a fly pattern that many anglers have on their nymph rig at all times. Or a facsimile thereof.

So, if you are new to the MO, tie this feller up. Lots of them. Squeeky uses this fly 12 months of the year. He does not take it off, often. Always the lead fly of one of the two nymph rigs.

If you got some time this week ahead and don’t know what to do, tie this up for your 2020 spring Mo River Trip.

Do we have the kits available? Of course, JAV kits are proprietary and only available at Headhunters of Craig! See them below and get yours today.

Or you can call the shop and chat with our full time shop staff that can guide you into more JAV kits to tie this winter!

Happy Holidays. Enjoy the week ahead! Come fish if you wish. It’s pretty good![/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/122361553″]
