Missouri River BAetis Nymphs

Missouri River Baetis Nymphs to get you through the week

This week, or at least the front end looks like the sun may play a role in the dry fly game. So what do we do when that happens? Nymph.

We love having the option to get the net wet between hatch periods fishing Montana’s Missouri River. What would you do?

You could also tie one of these dazzlers form a dry fly and dangle it in front of the fish if you wished. A proven method as well.

Stop in and get you baetis fix here in Craig at Headhunters Fly Shop. We got ’em!

Top Row: Copper Bead Pearl Lightning Bug, Quasimoto PT, Redheaded Stepchild, Juju Baetis, LGM, Two Bit Hooker, Anato-May Olive, Hola Back Girl Brown
Bottom Row: Tung Death Metal, Tung Lightning Bug Pearl, S&M Nymph Brown, BH Crystal PT BWO, Lightning Bug Purple, Peep Show Dark, B.H. Bubbleback BWO, Doc’s Blonde Baetis
Caddis and March Browns are in the house as well and we will address the March Brown nymphs of choice tomorrow. Caddis? Later. The higher water temps have brought out the bugs earlier than in the last several years.

Headhunters Baetis Week. Dry Fly Love.

Headhunters Baetis Week. Dry Fly Love.

Boy do we love Baetis here in central Montana fishing the Missouri River. It is the real beginning of the spring dry fly game.

While the Midge kick it off, the Baetis bring in the dry fly year adding validity to the daily dry fly game. Do they come every day? Mostly. So do the Midge. So we begin to expect dry fly opportunities excellence on a daily basis.

In the shop there are daily questions about the flies we like to fool those sometimes finicky feeding trout.

We like the emergers and flies that sit in the film. Film flies rule. Baetis are all about hanging in the meniscus. So therefor those are the type of flies that our fly guru Ninch fills our overstuffed always stocked fly bins.

DSC_0072

Duns are cool too. Who doesn’t like the adult. Cripples are what John, Jared, and Ben Hardy like. Spinners can come in handy too. John is also a fan of the BWO Spinner. Mark likes the Buzzball on everything else. But for BWO’s he fishes the CDC emerges most. Sara digs the small attractor type Baetis like the Purple Haze, Craze families which we do not even have listed. Those are a different category for us, but many like to throw the generics out there and our fish do seem to agree on one thing. Braden likes the bright dun stuff. Max is into the Spinner too.

It’s all about the presentation. And the right fly helps.

So what do we suggest? Any fly you dig. We all have our favorites and go-to patterns. What are yours? If you need a hint do not be afraid to swing by the fly shop. If you want to buy one of everything…two of everything…an even dozen? Why not. Be prepared. Fish well stocked.

Headhunters Baetis Week. Dry Fly Love.
Nearly 40 dry fly BWO patterns at Headhunters Fly Shop

We have not included the Para Adams in several post colors we carry, the Craze patterns, the emergent purple flavored filmy’s. That has to bring up the total closer to 60 patterns. Tired of fishing the same old patterns. Try something new this year, this week, on your favorite BWO reach.

Here are the flies as pictured above in some sort of order. Mostly in order as follows…

  • Top Row 1: Low Water Baetis, Hogan’s Sipper BWO, Harrop’s Short Wing BWO, RS2 BWO, Harrop’s Captive Dun, Harrop’s Captive Dun BWO, Brook’s Sprout BWO, RS2 Grey
  • Row 2: Harrop’s CDC Biot Emerger, Loop Wing Emerger Grey BWO, Indicator Parachute BWO, Para Cripple BWO, Swisha’s Clumpa, Quigley’s Half Dun Hatching BWO, Thor Cripple, Snowshoe Dun BWO
  • Row 3: Cripple Parachute BWO, Baetis Cripple, Harrop’s D & D Cripple Baetis, Harrop’s Last Chance Cripple, Sparkle Dun, Sparkle Dun Olive, Quigley’s Sparkle Flag BWO, Silverman’s Stacker Cripple, Nyman’s DOA Cripple
  • Row 4: Hi-Viz Para BWO, CDC Wing Para Spinner BWO, Harrop’s Hi-Vis CDC Spinner BWO, Harrop’s CDC Paraspinner Baetis, Silverman’s Stacker Spinner Olive, Passage’s Magic Fly BWO, Nyman’s Black Posted DOA Cripple, CDC Winged BOW Emerger, CDC Winged Emerger Grey

Team Headhunters Vedavoo Gear

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]We’ve just received a new shipment of gear from Vedavoo, that dope “handmade in the USA with USA materials” company. Designer Scott Hunter puts a lot of thought into every piece of gear he makes. It’s not always obvious when you first pick it up. Most Vedavoo pieces are utilitarian. They are not over designed, and could even be described as “non-technical”.

It’s when you start to use the stuff that you realize that each pack rides just right on your body. There are just enough pockets in the right places. The durability is unquestionable, and the simple retro style is built for using on the water, not looking at in the shop.

Our favorite piece from Vedavoo is the Deluxe Gear Pouch. This has become my all time favorite Steelhead/Spey/Minimalist pack. Perfect for an evening of dry fly fishing on the Missouri, a quick hike up a tributary creek, or as a winter Spey kit for the Missouri. It is the only pack I wear Steelhead fishing anymore. And I have owned and used many.

We also love the Spinner Day pack and it’s unique harness system that you have to try on to appreciate. Like much of the Vedavoo line.

Swing on by and check out the new gear with Team Headhunters Patches on them. It’s going to be a wade fishing year, and Vedavvo packs are just the ticket.[/vc_column_text][us_separator show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][us_image image=”11650″ size=”full” link=””][/vc_column][/vc_row]

NRS Crush Watershoe

NRS Crush WaterShoe at Headhunters Fly Shop

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]This shoe is literally Crushing it. The NRS Crush is a hot seller right out of the spring gate as we move into our stunning summer.

Why so popular when we still have snow flurries about the local region?

Antricipation of course. A wanting and needing for warmth. Just the though of it is personally satisfying.

Buy a summer dream and wear them proudly.

The Headhunters staff speaks out about the NRS Crush

NRS "Crush" WaterShoe
Women’s NRS Crush Watershoe @ Headhunters Fly Shop

Mark says: The NRS Crush is what all the kids are wearing this year!

Dewey says: I’ve been wearing the “Crush” around the shop and they feel like slippers. I like that I can wear the shoe in the boat and wading. I am sure the “Crush” will make it to the golf course this year. You never no when you may have to play a water shot.

Sara says: Pretty comfy. Wouldn’t want to run a marathon in them. But then again, I wouldn’t want to run a marathon.

Braden says:  Chicks dig ’em,  so I dig ’em.

Ninch says: I like them because you don’t burn the top of your feet in these baby’s. Other than that, I rock my flips.

NRS Crush Watershoe @ Headhunters Fly Shop

Rugged materials, smart details and our signature Idaho style make the Crush your go-to shoe, day-in-day out, trip after trip, on and off the water.

  • This versatile, technically-capable shoe looks as good at the pub as it performs on the water.
  • The super sticky, siped rubber outsole provides a sure grip on wet rocks.
  • Quick-drying, DWR-coated Cordura® upper shrugs off the wear and tear of sticks and stones.
  • Ports in the sidewall quickly drain water away.
  • A removable foam insole supports and cushions the foot.
  • A “crushable” heel lets you also wear the shoe as a slip-on.
  • Includes two pairs of contrasting-color laces.
  • Custom-designed “launch box” includes a free NRS strap.
  • Marking sole.
  • D width
NRS "Crush" WaterShoe at Headhunters Fly Shop
Idaho State logo’d and wiped sole.

The upper material is made of Cordura. A sticky siped marking rubber sole. The insole is EVA foam with a lace closure system and built in sidewall drainage. A crushable heel and D width makes this a must have for summer boat and fishing wear.

Is this shoe made for wade fishing? Yeah, here on the Mo we commonly wade fish in our flip-flops, so a case could be made for it here. On slippery bowling ball style rivers? Maybe. But the sole is totally grippy on smooth wet rocks.

This shoe is made for kicking it after fishing, before fishing, while in the boat, kayakers, and other water activities. You gotta be careful about the marking sole if you are rolling around in beautiful white gel coated craft. Those folks will hang you if you come aboard their boat with these black soled water shoes.

Available in half sizes 8-13. We got them in all sizes at the shop. The NRS Crush sells for $79.95.

We have not had them around long enough to do the smell test. That is certainly forthcoming.

The NRS Crush Watershoe is not available yet on our online store but they are ready for you at the shop

So far we have launched boats, rocked them on our porch for Coors Lite entertaining, and enjoyed the comfort level in the shop.

We got ’em here at Headhunters Fly Shop in Craig Montana. Your fly fishing function and fashion store deep in the Missouri River canyon. Actually centrally located in the best fly fishing town on earth. Where else can you get out of the boat just steps from a great fishing bar called Joe’s and a top shelf restaurant named Izaak’s.

Not too many places on earth like Craig Montana.

Enjoy it in your NRS Crush Watershoe.

You’d have to ask Ninch. He’ll know.

It is one of the most talked about streamers on the Mo, and rivers, streams, lakes, and of course bass ponds.

A few in the past week have asked us to post a little something about this fly. Again.

Here it is. The answer. The Kreelex. Love it. Live it. Fish it.

Buy this baby at Headhunters and get it started. Tie your own?! Why not.

The beauty of Headhunters Kreelex JAV Kit is that you can add another 10 flavors of Krenik Product to your grab bag here at the store.

Essential Addt’l Items for your Drift Boat

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Everybody has the basics in their drift boat.

YETI Ice Chest, spare oar, extra oar lock, spare boat plug, warm jacket, rain pants, a heater when it’s cold, gloves…

Pictured above are some of the things that I feel are necessary for bringing your game up to the concierge level.

I am striving for the concierge level for sure. I really think it is a function of age. I’m old enough to have a number of killer fly rods, extra reels, boat heater and kerosene heater systems, the right clothing, SIMMS Waders, Kast Gloves…but why go without when spending 1/2 of the year in a drift boat.

Essential Addt’l Items for your Drift Boat

Cotton Terry Hand Towels. My favorite extra item int he boat. Used to dry your hands. To wipe your mouth. To clean any mess that may develop during the day. I use them clean for a day, then y=they clean the floor the following morning, then to the wash. Good for a wash or two until they become totally grotie! My clients favorite addt’l item.

Micro-Fiber Towel. An update tot eh Terry Towel. Used for sunglasses, camera equipment, anything f=that needs a clean and soft towel.

Beef Jerky. Good everyday at 10 am. If you start drinking beer at 89am, then 9am is the appropriate starting time. The bigger bag the better. Beef Jerky makes every fishing day better.

Extra Car Keys. I have 3 in the boat. Seems like the right number. I put them all back in the boat. Don’t get locked out at the ramp. If you do, make sure you have plenty of Beef Jerky.

Sharpie. Everybody needs few Sharpie’s around.

Chocolate. I like the big Toblerone Bars. Big enough to share. You can hoard it if you wish, but if you get busted you gotta have some for others. This tube holds 6 big bars. Stock up at Costco when you see items like this!

Hand Warmers. I buy these too by the case. I have never had too many of these in the boat. It’s like having too much money. Never heard that phrase out of anybody I know. I warm them up on the dashboard in the heat of the window defroster int eh truck on the way to the put in. Then put them ion your shirt pickets warming your core for the day. A 2nd pair in your gloves or outer pockets to warm those fingers too!

An extra extra boat plug. Takes no room. Find the 2nd one when you cannot locate the 1st one.

An extra super warm hat. This one is waterproof too. With ear flaps. DWR finished. 90% of your body heat escapes though your head. Cover it for all day warmth. Keeps the rain off too. Extra comfort without sacrificing a ton of space.

Matches/Lighters. Ever had to pull over, start a fire, to get warm? I have. Most of my friends have too. Lots of flame sources are pretty important to me these days. Safety is key. Only two kinds of people. Those who have needed to start a fire, and those who will need to sometime in the future.

Baby Wet Wipes. You only need them if you don’t have them. Big bang for a little product. These can be clutch!

RIO Fly Line Cleaning Towelettes. Why even get in the boat if your fly line is not slippery and clean. Better shooting, better floating, all better all the time. These 99 cent towelettes are the most important indirect item in my boat. I use them 2-4 times a day when fishing. The best way to get your fly to the target is by having a perfectly slick fly line. The RIO Line Cleaning Towelette is essential!

Electrical Tape. This stretchy waterproof tape can be used for lots of fix it jobs. While Duct Tape is great too, we already know you have roll in the boat somewhere. This secondary roll is essential too. A roll or two fits nicely in any drift boat orifice.

Eyeglass Repair Kit. Eye protection, safety, is the number one rule in any fishing situation. Not tipping the boat over is pretty important too. Small screwdrivers, nose pads, extra little tiny eyeglass screws, in a tiny little tube. Pick one of these kits up at your local grocer or at the glasses store. The small screwdriver also works on fly reels. Bonus.

Loon UV Knot Sense. This is a product that I just love. Use it to fix a cracked/sliced fly line. Get rid of that hinge that is f***ing up your perfect slack line dry fly presentation. Use it to fix that groove in your favorite fly reel that is again messing with your line. Fill it in with UV Knot Sense! Use it to fix those leaking waders. The 12 holes you just produced crossing that barbed wire fence. Dab it on, and expose to the sunlight. The UV rays will immediately cure the goo. A product that is imperative in your drift boat.

Hot Sauce of your choice. I like several hot sauces! Who doesn’t. I currently have the Pepper Plant Chunky Garlic on board. A damn fine sauce. Big flavors of garlic married with various peppers. Good til the last drop. Makes that bland wife you buddy packed Pop w/ flavor!

These are items that I think will make your day go by smoother than expected. Why not live large in Montana. Big state, big times.

What are you favorite additional essential boat items? Let us know so we can add them to our own collection![/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][us_grid orderby=”title” order=”asc” ids=”6844,10999,9123,9116,6650,9071″ post_type=”ids” no_items_message=”” items_layout=”shop_trendy” items_gap=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Fly Box Organization Hell

Fly Box Organization Hell

It’s over. I’m done. That hell has passed and now I can breathe easy.

My wife can sleep better too knowing that the kitchen table can be once again be used as a spot for eating meals.

Only took 10 days…

I know I promised that it would only occupy the central household table for a short two nights. I may have extended the project longer than I needed, but it is a difficult seasonal process.

You know the pain and whiskey/beer content measured in ounces, or drams, or quarts that must be consumed to even approach this project with a clear mind.

This year like most I had a plan going into the game. I was going to take all the hoppers out of their homes and re-use a couple of the boxes for a caddis dry fly re-org and gather all of the smaller terrestrials into the other hopper box. Then I was gonna move the midge nymphs into something smaller, the midge dries into a new magnetic divider small box(s), the streamers into a color coordinated 2 box system, along the way integrate the pre-purchased well thought through the new compartment boxes and 2 magnetic slim line boxes somewhere, then get the crawdads a new home, the 3 Season worm, scud, czech box cleaned out, the mayfly nymph box cleaned up too, the worm box needed to go, the Drakes an update, the March Browns all into the mayfly dry box, and then make room…

So you can see how this process becomes cloudy. Way cloudy. 5 bourbon rocks can make things a bit unclear too.

We have had several clients of the fly shop bring in cups, boxes, and random fly mayhem, hand over to a shop employee, and pay for them to organize and fill in. Wow!

Probably the smart way out for those folks who do not want to piss off their wife!

One of the biggest tasks is re-aligning all of the flies in fly shop fly cups. Some have BWO’s, and few streamers clotting up the cup. Some have worms from the spring period with tippet and tangled rats nest type f***ups, other faded and dust riddled flies from your patch. A few cups full of shitty flies that never worked that came right from your tying desk.

Then as you all know that when you get deep into the re-org process…you have a change of plan. A change, a hunch, a strong feeling that the first 11 hrs invested has been a complete waste of time as you formulate an entirely new plan.

Which of course takes 7 new fly boxes.

And a trip to the fly shop. You would order them online, but your wife has designs of using the table for something other than your long winded bullshit yearly fly organization.

Hence the immediacy of the fly shop trip. You could use the empty perfectly good fly boxes in drawers in your tying/man room…but they are old and that just will not stand. You would give them away, but you might need them some unforeseeable time in the future? Right?

Nonsense is the key to fly fishing and that theme runs deep. It infects anglers from age 8 to 88. It is pretty tough to avoid.

That is why we fight so hard for complete and total organization. If your flies are organized, they’re easier to find. Making it easier to catch fish? Maybe that does not correlate.

I think those who cast better generally catch more fish. But it certainly does not hurt to be ready for the game.

All spring we practice casting, read inane nonsensical articles like this one, and organize fly boxes.

Then the fishing season arrives and we in theory should be ready for action? In theory. On paper.

I know I am one step closer to becoming truly ready. My fly boxes are organized, categorized, and filled in anticipation of Trico’s, March Browns, BWO’s, Scud hatches.

A good time to get this task done in yesterday. But if you missed the deadline give it a shot this weekend. Just make sure to pick up a bottle at the liquor store on your way home.

Pick out something your wife likes…it’s for her.

Missouri River March Streamer Patterns

Missouri River March Streamer Patterns w/ a side of Streamer Line discussion

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]March Streamer Fishing is?…which leads us to this article written by team members Dewey and Mark at Headhunters Fly Shop.

Missouri River March Streamer Patterns

With unseasonably warm weather this month the river is starting to get pressure. A popular lead in to the Missouri River fishing discussion sometimes starts with “Are they hitting streamers?” Yes is the answer. “Is the bite good?” Like Ninch says “Only as good as you are.”

That is sort of the truth according to Ninch. You can also go long periods with out any interest in your streamer pattern. Should you change? Only you can answer that question. It really is up to you.

How?

Fishing streamers can be accomplished floating, wading, or a combination of the two. Let’s start with wading. With the popularity of the two-handed rod increasing here in central Montana this method is an effective way to cover large water without wearing yourself out. With that being said it does not mean the same water cannot be fished with a single handed rod. It’s just a matter of how much back casting room you will have. And your preference too.

Where?

The fish seem to still be in the winter mode meaning they are grouped up and hanging in slow water. The sexy riffles and runs look good this time of year but generally hold less fish. The slow water at the tail-out is usually where the fish will hang. The same water we send people to nymph fish is the same type of water you may want to seek when tossing the streamer fly. Inside bends have also been good and don’t forget about the water that looks like whitefish water…it can be prime winter habitat for trout.

What Gear?

I like to fish water 3 to 6 feet in depth. Some anglers like shallower water and a few are more comfortable with the deep stuff. So what kind of line do you need to access those streamer loving trout? Floating lines will work in the slow not so deep water. Generally you get to the fish with a weighted streamer pattern. Lead eyes, coneheads, flies weighted with lead on the shank…all good ways to sink that tasty morsel into the trout zone..

You can also use any number of weighted streamer lines. The RIO Outbound Short has been on of long time favorites but there are a couple others that are great too. The Outbound Short F/I has a 15′ clear intermediate tip. Maybe the best all round Missouri River streamer fly fishing line. Easy loading with almost endless power is why this remains the top selling streamer line at Headhunters.

The RIO Outbound Short comes in a full intermediate version. Clear Tipped backed with a Transparent Yellow back end of the line. Gaining a cult following here in the shop and now bleeding into the hands and reels of some our our streamer junkie clients. Super shoot-a-bility will let you believe you are conducting business with a sniper rod!

Screen shot 2015-03-15 at 11.33.02 PM
RIO Outbound Short Streamer Line

The RIO Streamer Tip F/I is equally as good. A 10′ clear intermediate tip for lower water fall conditions here on the Mo. Lots of power for wind coupled with precise cast-a-bility that many like all year long!

RIO StreamerTip WF6F/S6 is an option for those who like to get a bit deeper. The 10′ blck tip sink rapidly with a floating back end. 6-7ips for those who like it deeper than the intermediate head can achieve.

The RIO Sink Tip rounds out our RIO Sink Tip Series with the 150 grain up to a 300 grain tip. 4-5ips sink rate on this 24ft sink tip.

Having some streamer fans inquiring about the Airflo Kelly Galloup Streamer Max Long fly line. We got ’em in stock for your streamer dreams! A fly line built for those who like to get the flies deep! This heavily weighted Airflo streamer line is for tossing those over-sized articulated streamers that Galloup disciples thrive on. If you fall into this category then you must have this adorning your streamer stick.

Kelly Galloup Streamer Max Long Fly Line

You can add any number of tips to the end of your dry fly line too. Do they work as well? No. No but they can gt you into a few fish in a pinch. VersiTips from RIO and weighted Polyleaders from Airflo are available at the shop. That is a topic for another blog. Later.

What Technique?

Dewey says: The fish are not too aggressive on the bite. Meaning that they may not be jumping on the fly, not the hard grabs often. I like to cast 3/4 down stream and let the fly swing to the hang down, directly below me. Most of my takes have been on the hang down. I have had success with a slight twitch at the hang down. Wade fishing is a great way to enjoy the day chucking streamer patterns to Missouri River Trout. You get into a rhythm that is calming. Until the jolt of electricity when the fish decides to whack it!

I have been throwing the two handed rod a bunch this winter. It is my preferred way to winter fish streamers. Why? It is newer to me and is certainly easier on my body. Plus it is so damn efficient replacing the incessant single handed casting with time in the water. Why not have your fly in the water more often. Seems to make logical trout sense!

Float fishing is a different game. The single handed rod still rules here. No application for the two handed rod unless you like to endanger those around you. Hooking the rower is still not a great path to take. The fish are holding in the same type of slow water. The slow water can be found in the traditional streamer water behind rocks, skinny water near islands and bends, or slow runs in the middle of the river.

Now is when the “only as good as you are” part comes in. It’s still early for the “get it in there and fast strip” type of streamer fishing. We find get it in there twitch and pause to be more effective. This is when matching fly weight to line type becomes important. If the outfit sinks to fast to avoid hanging up you will be stripping to fast. Keep the everything balanced for pause and twitch. If you can entice the strike by teasing the often suspect rainbow trout into that fateful aggressive open thy mouth reaction then you will catch more trout. If you can’t? Well, casting practice on the water is sometimes an excuse we use at the bar upon coming up blank!

I cast my single handed rod while floating down the river and switch to my double handed rod when wade fishing. Efficiency is important if you want to catch these sometimes bullish winter fish.

Missouri River March Streamer Patterns

Fly selection tends to be a little smaller than what we recommend a month from now. Size 6 or 8 is the norm with the occasional 4 or 10 thrown depending on pattern or water. Colors can very from day to day. I find if you have faith in your fly you oughtta/gotta fish it hard. Bring a cup full of winter or March streamer patterns to the water. The following patterns are a few we like to recommend for this time of year.

  • Hot Cone Wooly Bugger #6
  • Dali Lama Black/White #6
  • Bloom’s MRS Bugger #4
  • Bloom’s Bullhead Black/White #6
  • Olive Blossom #6
  • Sculpzilla Blackl/White #6
  • Kraft’s Kreelex Copper/Gold #6
  • Coffey’s Sparkle Jig Sculpin #1
  • Coffey’s Sparkle Minnow Brownie #6
  • Lil’ Kim Copper #4

Adipose Boatworks Helena Montana

Adipose Boatworks Helena Montana

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]While we love a ton of fly fishing products you could assume that we love a few even more.

Adipose Boatworks in Helena Montana is definitely one of them.

Tracy Allen and Mike Ward have done a bang up job manufacturing The Adipose Flow.

Adipose Boatworks Helena Montana
Tracy at the helm

You can actually see our Adipose love from the number of boats in our Craig Montana yard. Most of our guides rock the Flow with Peter Skidmore owning the 2nd Flow off the line 5 years ago. Now he is on his 3rd and still loving it. John Arnold had an early Flow as well. Now you can see over 10 Adipose drift boats on any given morning at Headhunters.

A few new things happening at Adipose this spring. My last visit Mike and Tracy filled me in on new additions and updates.

Locking hatches is the first one. Now you can insure your gear stays put with the locking hatches. Cool!

Side Anchor system for those who dig that sort of thing.

Rod cushions

Rod holder cushioning. Add this for fly rod health. Anchor cushioning as well.

Some sort of Pro-Lok Edge Oar System  which is a graphite high speed oar system that is integrated with the oar locks…super slick deal, lightweight, killer.  You will have to call the shop in Helena and speak with either Mike or Tracy for more info!

Last year we saw metal casting stanchions securing the knee braces. Floor mats fore and aft. Additional oars. An updated oar lock selection. Jack stands, spare tires, drift boat trailers…and more.

All kinds of cool boat stuff at the shop in Helena. Boat buckles, oars, locks, advice, plugs, Torqeedo electric motors, boat straps, anchors, ropes, Adipose Montana Canvas boat covers and the list goes on.

Locking Hatches new for 2015

Call and visit the boys anytime for a visit to the stuffed boat lot. Spec boats available today and for the near future. They do slide off the lot this time of year. Call the shop if you need to special order an Adipose Flow and arrange your new drift boat.

We are the Adipose Demo Center on the Missouri River. Call Tracy or Mike and arrange a trial on the Missouri River here in Craig. We also have a couple Adipose Boats for rent. These go fast so get your reservation in the books today at Headhunters Fly Shop.

Missouri River March Dry Flies

Missouri River March Dry Flies

A good month ahead as we prepare ourselves for the first real dry fly action of 2015.

As the grass becomes greener and the flower buds are trying to pierce the winter envelope we too are ready for the re-birth here in Craig Montana.

While we have been prepping for 2015 starting way back in 2014 we are happy to see more and more of your smiling and excited fishing vibe stroll through the door. Yes, welcome 2015.

And yes welcome, 2015 dry fly fishing.

Most anglers aspire to toss the dry fly at finicky bank sipping rising trout. Not all, but you could make an argument that at some point in the commonly taken fly angling path many of us turn our attention to fooling the big brown trout on delicately tied tiny dry flies.

I think that is fair to say.

The season is upon us and it truly is time to get on the vise and bang out a box full of midge and BWO flies fro the upcoming 2 months. March and April both bring ample opportunities to grease up that dry fly, put your head down, and throw a perfectly executed reach cast!

Missouri River March Dry Flies
Missouri River March Dry Flies available at Headhunters Fly Shop

Above you will see single and solitary midge patterns, clusters from Harrop and LaFontaine, parachutes, CDC flies, cripples, and emerges. All good patterns for the Missouri River and it’s often slack ass water dry fly situations.

What flies should you be tying? Or buying in the near future? Check them out below and above and get after it.

March 15th is the beginning of Headhunters famous Spring Special. So soon? Yes. Check it out here to fish dry flies in the next couple months!

Missouri River Winter Trout Candy

Missouri River Winter Trout Candy for Bobber Lobbers

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Nymphing is the primary fish catching method of any winter trout fishery.

The Missouri River is no different.

So why not toss the sowbug. We have a ton of sows in stock and ready for winter angling.

At any given time you can throughout eh sow or scud. Most of the time some sort of sow/scud is attached to the end of our nymphing rig.

30 patterns above for a diverse batch of not only anglers but of trout. Some with beads ad some without.

Add a split shot and watch these sink to the feeding lane of your choice.

Soft inside lanes in nearly stopped water. Fish it if you can stand it. Most new anglers to the Mo’ do not spend the time int he right kind of winter water. They will learn. Fish the painfully slow inside lines…if you can.

Online Trout Flies!

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]We’ve been slowly working on a ‘real’ webstore over the winter, and it’s actually got a few products on it. A much nicer user experience than our previous clunker.

Some of you know we’ve been working on this because you’ve been buying stuff. This week we added a few of our favorite fly patterns as well.

There’s not many, and there won’t be. This selection represents some of our favorites, ones we talk about with customers on the phone, and the patterns most requested in over-the-phone sales.

Ninch and I will add some more soon, but it will remain a ‘best of’ list.

2015 Year of the Net

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Here, we observe Missouri River guide Beth Hood using a long handled net to capture a nice sized Missouri River Rainbow. Good form.

The team at Headhunters has noticed that net sales, questions and available options have all increased in the last couple of years. It seems that more and more anglers are using a net. Or maybe they are buying better nets that are more useable? Hopefully, an increased use of nets means a higher survival rate on released fish.

Now we have always sold a lot of nets to drift boat anglers. If you fish from a drift boat, you must use a net. There’s really no other way to land a fish unharmed without pulling over to the bank. In fact without a net in the boat, you really don’t land much. I have proven this to many clients over the years by forgetting my boat net. Typically on my first guide trip of the year.

For years the most popular ‘boat net’ on the Missouri has been the big, black extendable Ranger boat net with a rubber bag. Personally, I hate them. They are way too big, they fall apart in a few days, requiring the liberal use of JB Weld, screws and duct tape. I’m sure you’ve seen Missouri River guides ‘stabbing’ fish 10 feet from the boat, which also annoys me.

Here’s the big ugly:

[/vc_column_text][us_image image=”9998″ size=”full” link=””][vc_column_text]Although I would never use one of these, I understand why you would. It’s long and big. And the rubber net is good for the fish. They lie nice and flat in it, and are easy to release without handling them. We got plenty in stock if you need one.

Your clients don’t actually have to have any fish fighting skills, and they’re cheaper than better nets at $80 (sometimes less at scummy big box stores).

My personal net is an S2 from Jackson Hole called the Big Al (this is not the way inferior EGO S2 slider POS net you see in big box stores). Mine is about 10 years old and still going strong. It’s welded aluminum with a rubberized bag that is long and deep. In fact Beth is using it in the above image.

It’s a tough and quiet net, that fits in any boat without being in the way. For a long time I considered it the only high quality boat net that wasn’t made out of wood. The only problem was that it cost $220, which is(was) more than most were willing to spend. (I’ve had many arguments about my $220 net lasting 10+ years versus others who buy an $80 Ranger every year)

S2 also made some ‘mid-sized’ nets that blurred the line between a hang-off-your-back net and a bigger boat model. These are the kind of nets used by some wade fishing guides, and they really are useful for smaller streams and fish. I carry one of these when I’m rafting on the Blackfoot and Dearborn.

S2 has disappeared (at least I can no longer find them online), but several others have stepped in to fill the $200 high-end boat net niche.

Two we’re carrying in the shop are the Fishpond Nomad Series, and the newer Rising Aluminum Net. These are both very well made nets, although we can’t speak to the long-term durability of the Rising model as it’s newer.[/vc_column_text][us_image image=”10002″ size=”full” link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.risingfish.net%2Fproduct_detail%2F136%2Faluminum-net” onclick=”custom_link”][vc_column_text]The RISING ALUMINUM NET is the right size for me. I would rather have a net that stays out of my way, than a longer reaching one that we are tripping over all day long. You’re supposed to land them, not intercept them half way to the boat.

This net appears to be well made. There is a machined screw that secures the hoop. No rivets like the bass crowd uses. It uses a clear rubber net that is lightweight (one problem with light aluminum nets is that a heavy rubber bag can make them hard to single hand).

The end of the handle screws off, revealing a watertight ‘flask’. I’m not joking. if you see someone who looks like he doing shots out of his net handle this summer, it’s a Rising.

They come in some cool colors, which is cool. I really like this net so far. Time will tell how durable it is. At $129, however, 3-4 years would make me more than happy.[/vc_column_text][us_image image=”10004″ size=”full” link=””][vc_column_text]The FISHPOND NOMAD nets have been around a few years. First as just Nomad, then associated with Fishpond after being acquired by the Colorado bag maker.

These are one piece composite construction that has a thin rubberized coating making them grippy. Clear rubber bags are used on all models, and there are a bunch. These come in a wide variety of sizes from small wading nets, to boat nets 55″ long.

These have proven to be light and durable nets. You can chip off the coating it you treat them like a guide, but it has no effect on the net itself. They also come in a variety of camo-esque patterns. Cool-esque.

The boat-sized Fishpond nets run $200-229. Expensive, but from what I’ve seen worth it. With they achieve 10 year status like the S2? Only time will tell. We sold quite a few Fishpond Nomad nets last summer. Getting popular. Camo.

We also carry wood nets from Blue Ribbon, including the Guide Boat net. We definitely sell more hand nets than boat nets in wood. The Blue Ribbon boat nets seems durable – at least I’ve never heard otherwise – but i’ve never liked the HUGE round hoop on wooden boat nets. Takes up so much more room in the boat than it need to. I much prefer the long narrow hoops of modern nets. You know me. New school.

KEEP ‘EM WET CAMPAIGN

So if I haven’t sold you on the use of a net yet, maybe the Native Fish Society will. They have been promoting the Keep ‘Em Wet Campaign with anglers hash tagging photos on social media with #keepemwet. Lots of prizes!

If you post pictures on Facebook or Instagram holding fish in the air this year, people are going to make fun of you. This is serious. The best way to take that fish in the water photo is with a net under him.

I’ve definitely seen the blog community getting behind the #keepemwet campaign. Great to see the proper handling of fish get some ink (pixels, I guess). The use of a net is an important aspect of proper fish handling, especially for those fishing out of a boat. Use the net to release the fish please!

And here’s Beth Hood #keepemwet.[/vc_column_text][us_image image=”10007″ size=”full” link=””][us_image image=”10013″ size=”full” link=””][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Silly Sunday Spey Scenery

Silly Sunday Spey Scenery

Free 2 Handed Casting and Fishing Clinic yesterday hosted by Headhunters Fly Shop.

Full boat with 12 students and the weather actually did cooperate, mostly.

Calm and raining in the morning followed by wind, overcast, sun, calm, rain, wind…

No worries from the participants. Everybody was just awesome.

It may have been the most talented class we have had! The youngest crowd so far. Over half of the gang was under 35!

Silly Sunday Spey Scenery
Sara and Max cutting it up!

Many of the class enjoyed the opportunity to cast different 2 handed rods. Rods from SAGE including the Method 6126 (John and Mark love this rod!), 6119, and 7126. SAGE One 4116 and the 7116. Orvis Clearwater 11′ 6wt, Clearwater 11′ 7wt, and the Clearwater 11’9″ 7wt. T & T DNA in two lengths which the class thought was silky! And the T & T DNA is Ninch’s personal fav. Glass Echo Switch Rods including 11′ 6wt which Max is all in on this length, 12’6″ 6wt and the 12’9″ 7wt. And a few more you will just have to come in and see…

Remember we have better than 15 Spey/Switch Demo Rods for your pleasure. Headhunters Fly Shop is Montana’s Trout Spey HQ.

We have one more free 2 handed casting clinic on March 7th. Then Gould/McCune in April. The 11th and 12th with the 2 clinics that have nearly sold out. Just a few spots left. If we fill the 2 days we will add a 3rd day. Sustained anchor casts with these two world lass casters and instructors. Get in today!

RIO InTouch Fly Lines @ Headhunters Fly Shop

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]The new InTouch fly line from RIO came out last fall and now it is going on most reels that move through Headhunters Fly Shop. Anglers are noticing the difference too.

Why? ConnectCore is the answer. Airflo fly lines have had a non-stretchy core for generations and RIO has created a low stretch core called ConnectCore. And we love it!

RIO says...

When you rely on touch to know what’s going on in the depths, line stretch is the enemy.

Our ConnectCore lines open up new worlds of perception and sensitivity with ultra-low stretch performance. Soft, subtle takes become positive grabs, and without stretch to dull reaction times, hook sets are instant and sure. ConnectCore. The secret weapon for success.

The unintended result of changing the core is a subtle texture that is tangible on the InTouch line series. The intended result is quicker pickups from the water, better connectivity from hand to fly, better hook-ups, and far better cast-ability. Available today at Headhunters Fly Shop in Craig. All of the RIO InTouch Series fly lines are in stock and certainly the line sizes that suit your Missouri River needs.

Introducing RIO’s new ultra-low stretch InTouch fly line family from RIO Products on Vimeo.

Rio InTouch lines include the ever popular RIO Gold. America’s #1 selling fly line. This improved InTouch version is really terrific. I have gone back to the Gold for my softer more forgiving rods like the SAGE Accel and older rods like SAGE XP, Z-Axis, SLT’s, Circa’s, Winston, Scott, and may other rod makers match up well with the RIO InTouch Gold.

The RIO Grand is just awesome. Faster action tip flexing rods shine with this overweighed fly line.

The InTouch RIO Grand is a full line size heavier than the industry standard, and features more weight distributed towards the front of the line to easily load faster action fly rods. The ultra-low stretch ConnectCore provides groundbreaking levels of sensitivity for intuitively better cast timing, easier line lift and sharp, precise mends.

  • Easily loads fast action rods
  • ConnectCore improves cast timing, hook set and mending
  • One full line size heavier than industry standard

The RIO InTouch Xtreme Indicator Fly Line is our favorite for nymphing all over Montana. The high floating orange flavored tip gives you not only intelligent vision but an easily mendable fly line tool.

New for 2015. An incredibly advanded nymphing line, ideal for fishing indicators out of a boat.

The InTouch Xtreme Indicator line has been designed to be a very effective tool for anglers that fish nymphs and indicators out of a boat. The short head has a powerful front taper that casts indicator rigs with ease, and loads up with a single cast. Built with RIO’s ultra-low stretch ConnectCore Technology, the line allows for intuitively better cast timing, easier line lifts and sharp, precise mends. Lack of stretch also means faster reaction time when setting the hook.

  • Short, easy casting head to easily throw large indicators and flies
  • Ultra-low core stretch for maximum performance
  • Unique three-color SureFire system ensures unprecedented accuracy control

Ninch stated the other day that we have all of the InTouch lines in stock for your fly line updating this winter headed into spring. I agree with Ben. A perfect time of the year to inventory your fly lines and replace those that are due.

We have 10 SAGE reels lined up with all of the popular RIO lines like the Gold, Grand, Xtreme Indicator, LT, and Perception. Come in and demo any fly line you choose. Why not take out a couple lines to give them an honest try and decide based on actual results.

Headhunters Fly Shop is your fly line HQ in the central part of Montana. Great Falls, Helena, and Craig…we have the largest selection of fly lines in our region. Over 75 models on the wall for you to choose from. Single and two-handed lines from RIO, Airflo, Wulff, and Orvis.

And, don’t forget that Headhunters has an unconditional fly line guarantee. You don’t like it, return it, exchange it, refund it, get it right. We got your back in this sometimes confusing fly line world.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][us_grid post_type=”ids” no_items_message=”” columns=”4″ items_layout=”shop_trendy” items_gap=”” ids=”7462″][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][us_grid post_type=”ids” no_items_message=”” columns=”4″ items_layout=”shop_trendy” items_gap=”” ids=”6950″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][us_grid post_type=”ids” no_items_message=”” columns=”4″ items_layout=”shop_trendy” items_gap=”” ids=”6962″][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][us_grid post_type=”ids” no_items_message=”” columns=”4″ items_layout=”shop_trendy” items_gap=”” ids=”8107″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Ninch & John’s Fishing Report

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Ninch and I decided to try a little lower river action the other day, what with the unseasonably warm and balmy, shirtsleeve weather. The ice that locked up the lower river for a month is long gone. The wind was almost non-existent, and Pelican is the closest ramp to both of our houses. Our plan was to swing streamers all day on two-handers, which is always our plan this time of year.

Here’s my favorite shot of the day. The big wide open of the lower river.[/vc_column_text][us_image image=”9472″ size=”full” link=”” onclick=”lightbox”][vc_column_text]The morning proved a little slower than we expected. While the air temps were plenty warm, the water may have still be on the cold side. We were also fishing some pretty quick water for this time of year. A few were nabbed regardless.

As they day progressed we really began to dial in the perfect depth and speed. Silty inside bends were very productive, as they hold the most midge pupa and nice easy currents for the trout to hang in. It usually takes us a little longer to figure it out when fishing “new” winter water. By “new” I mean that we know it well but not well in January. Sure, we know where they are from the Dam to Mid-Canon this time of year, but it’s more enjoyable to hit some new stuff and figure it out. Unless we get our hats handed to us…

Which did not happen this time. In fact, it was some of the best winter angling I’ve experienced on the lower river. In a couple of runs I watched Ben lean into fish 2 or 3 casts in a row. You never get them all when you’re swinging, but we got a good number of them, including some nice Browns.

Ninch spent the entire day swinging his Echo Glass two-hander, which is really turning out to be the perfect winter stick for the Missouri River. Ninch used the new RIO Scandi Versitip with floating, intermediate and type 5 tips. He caught most of his fish on the intermediate.

I fished my Sage METHOD 12’6″ #6, which has become my favorite Mo’ rod (and my favorite Steelhead rod). I stuck with the floater all day with a long leader and weighted fly. I probably should’ve switched to the intermediate – and more in some runs – but am just too lazy to stop fishing and change heads. A problem I’ve had for a long time.

Our best flies were the winter standards. Flashy baitfish. Ninch was throwing some kind of Kreelex variation of his own, and I was tossing the Mozuri Minnow. I am well aware that everyone wants to throw giant, fat-head, tandem (or more) Galloup-esque patterns. They have there place and time, but we find that over the course of a winter, the smaller Clouser style baitfish patterns far out-produce the bigger pushers. And when we have a big day, it’s always on the minnows. I tell people this all the time in the shop, but they don’t listen…

We were a little bummed when we started and realized it was going to be a good midge hatch. We had no single handers in the boat. We probably didn’t have any dries. Then a big ant fall came and we were really bummed. While I can’t say that I saw a whole lot of feeders, I did see a few. And we weren’t really fishing those kinds of spots. I suspect that there were some great dry fly opportunities around. Today may have been the day. Staying out until dark would have been the smart play if we were looking for heads. As it was, we were pretty much fished out around 3pm.

In the winter you can expect mostly Rainbow, and we had that. Cookie-cutter Missouri River fish mostly in that 16-17 inch range, but a few bigger. We were also rewarded with a half-dozen nice Browns. Very healthy and powerful. Jumpin’ all over the place. This makes me happy.

Here’s a few shots of a beautiful post Chinook winter day on the Missouri River.[/vc_column_text][us_grid type=”m” post_type=”attachment” items_quantity=”” images=”9474,9473,9471,9470,9469,9468,9478,9480,9467″ orderby=”post__in” items_gap=”” columns=”6″ items_layout=”gallery_default” img_size=”us_350_350_crop” overriding_link=”popup_post_image” breakpoint_1_cols=”6″ breakpoint_2_width=”768px” breakpoint_3_width=”480px” breakpoint_2_cols=”4″ breakpoint_3_cols=”2″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Missouri River winter flies

Fly Tying Night Efforts

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Fly Tying Night in America resumed last night in Craig, MT. We kind of announced it at the last minute, and folks came from both directions – Helena and Great Falls – as well as locally.

Some pretty nice efforts last night. No screwing around in this group, just filling up the boxes with flies to be used on the Missouri River.

Echo Glass Switch and Spey

ECHO Glass Spey & Switch in Stock

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]They’ve finally arrived, the much anticipated and touted ECHO Glass Spey & Switch models. We’ve been playing with these for a couple of months (we magically got our hands on one of the early production models), and it’s thumbs up from everyone. Easy casting, powerful and fun. Yes, fun. How can a fly rod be fun? Try one and see.

While we – and other reviewers – believe that these are great learning tools, they are also deadly in the hands of experienced spey casters. It’s one big spring that cannot be overpowered. They are also relatively light, considering how much glass and resin is involved in the construction.

The price is unbeatable, and I’ve stated before that the price would appeal to many as a second or third rod, but we would have no problem using these as a primary rod for nearly any two-handed application.

We have the 12′ 4″ #6, 12′ 9″ #7 and the 11′ #6 in stock and available for demo. Swing by and try them out if you’re in Craiglandia. Get your’s now, as I don’t expect them to last long.[/vc_column_text][us_grid post_type=”ids” no_items_message=”” columns=”4″ items_layout=”shop_trendy” items_gap=”” ids=”8949″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Sage Method Video

Winter of SAGE | SAGE Method Video

You folks know we are enamored with the SAGE Method series.

Ultra fast action rods that are perfect for those who like a red big stick with power.

While we love the 5 and 6 weights for summer dry fly and nymphing action we have become pretty excited about the SAGE Method 2 handed rods. We have a number in stock and a pile of SAGE Method Demo’s too. Feel free to stop on by with questions about any of the SAGE models and specifically the Method.

We’ve got better than a half dozen for you to try. Or try the 2 handers at one of our Free 2 Handed Spey and Fishing Clinics. The Saturday session is full but feel free to get on board February 7th and March 7th. Book your slot today.

But stop in anytime at the Missouri River SAGE demo center.

SIMMS Winter @ Headhunters

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Some say summer is for SIMMS.

SIMMS WInter
Super Slick SIMMS Jacket is our winter favorite!

We say, don’t forget about winter my fishy friend.

We so often find ourselves thinking about summer fishing behaviors when we fantasize about fishing. Flip Flops, some shorts and a SIMMS fishing shirt. I know that is where my mind often drifts. Thinking of warmer days as we trudge through the mindless winter here in central Montana.

Well the reality is just this. There simply are more days when you need to include cold weather gear here in Montana than the polar opposite.

Waders lead this winter tale as we pull them on more often in than not September thru May, sometimes even June. We live in our waders. The SIMMS G3 is our clear choice. Mid priced and bombproof. Every angler knows that SIMMS makes the only wader Made in America, the only one, and the quality of the product is guaranteed. The G3 is the warrior. You can get into the G4, but for us here on the Mo, with very little barbed wired jumping and not much bushwhacking we like the comfort and ease of the SIMMS G3 Wader.

The SIMMS Slick Jacket is our go-to winter shell. Longer for covering your SIMMS ExStream Jacket easily. “Propelled by GORE-TEX® Pro Shell fabric, with stretch, the Slick flows with your body for superior mobility, while the ultraclean outside-in design delivers snag-free performance from hood to bottom hem.” This truly is your best bet for tromping around Montana winter waters.

A simple SIMMS Zip Top Fleece is one way to go. The SIMMS ExStream Jacket is yet another. Why not be warm. Comfy in fact. Fishing is not supposed to be chore. Nope. More fish are fought when we are comfortable.

We are constantly wandering around with 2 handed rods in the winter and the Slick/Kinetic combo fits the winter Missouri River bill perfectly. Reach though pockets on the Slick allow you to find that lip shit in your interior pocket. And that flask? Oh, keep that in your outside Slick pocket for convenience.

SIMMS Winter
SIMMS Kinetic Jacket @ Headhunters

If your blood runs a little warmer you may enjoy the SIMMS Kinetic Jacket. A great outerwear piece that you can wear out or hide under your Slick Jacket. Your choice. The new Simms Kinetic Jacket is just what we’ve been waiting for. A “puffball” on steroids. We love the hood for super chilly mornings and windy fall days. It’s has some stretch, which makes casting easier. It’s lightweight and the combination of synthetic materials means that when your arm gets wet while releasing that trophy, you’ll stay warm. This jacket is perfect by itself, or under a rain shell. A “must-have” for off-season trout fishing Montana’s Missouri River, or your local winter fishery!

SIMMS is for much more than just summer. It has so many more uses than just one season. SIMMS can outfit you for your other season wear. We got the goods in downtown Craig for your winter, and summer, fishing pleasures![/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][us_grid post_type=”ids” no_items_message=”” columns=”4″ items_layout=”shop_trendy” items_gap=”” ids=”6650″][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][us_grid post_type=”ids” no_items_message=”” columns=”4″ items_layout=”shop_trendy” items_gap=”” ids=”8879″][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][us_grid post_type=”ids” no_items_message=”” columns=”4″ items_layout=”shop_trendy” items_gap=”” ids=”8910″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Missouri River Winter Flies

Missouri River Winter Flies

I don’t know the names of all of the flies in these images. I just don’t anymore. Ninch is the fly mastermind with some suggestions from John and I. But it really is his deal. So as the bins change as the trends change I find myself finding new killer flies to try all the time. Changing it up is fun. Nothing in nature stands still  for too long.

That is the argument for changing flies too. Static behaviors are lame.

So I lost the list of the flies in this post. I know 2/3 of them. So while I do not know the proper names I do know that they all work when you toss them into the Mo.

Add a split shot and a bobber and hold on.

Find slower water too.

Missouri River Winter Flies
Dirty Winter Flies

The dirty winter flies above include Peep Show, some derivation of a Zebra, Zebra’s, FB Sow, Ninch’s Pearl Ninja, Pink Lightening Bug, Tungsten beaded SJW, Rainbow Czech Nymph, Ninch’s Pink Beaded Sow.

Really super slutty stuff works well. Pink or orange or red flavors will get you through the cold months. Black works too.

Dry flies? Check them out below.

Missouri River Winter Flies
Midges.

Buzzball, Dominick’s Reneball, Griffith’s Gnat, Harrop’s CDC Hanging Midge, 2X posted Cluster, CDC Cluster, and more. Any thing you like that looks good on the water. A crap shoot real is the deal. Tie on some sort dropper for a better shot. If you can go that way.

Happy Holidays and we will see you on the river. Or in the bar afterward.

We commonly get asked why an individual would buy an Abel.

Can’t blame a feller for that now can you?

Missouri River Winter Fishing Checklist

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Missouri River Winter Fishing Checklist. All the stuff you need for your winter excursion.

Whether you be fishing at your local pond or here not he Missouri you need to be prepared in a different way than you would be for a summer outing.

In the summer months you can forget a bunch of shit and still hammer out a comfortable fishing trip. In the winter it is much different as you need a clausal list of fishing accouterments.

Summertime: Rod, 6 pack, wide brimmed hat, cool shades, flip flops.

I love the short summer list. No better time to fish than the summer in my book. Early sun, late sun, 18hrs of fishing, dry fly all day long. Cold beers at Joe’s. Get to bed late, get out of bed early, and repeat.

But alas, the winter program is about 180 degrees from the EZ summer routine.

Missouri River Winter Fishing Checklist

You may have to dig out a bigger bag for all your winter shit. I have a large NRS waterproof bag that I shove all that I may need in clothing for any given day on the river.

The giant NRS Duffel includes…

  • Down Jacket
  • Lighter puffball
  • SIMMS G4 Jacket
  • Softshell jacket. Windproof and comfy
  • Lots of gloves. Leather Mitts that I stuff hand warmers into are key!
  • Handwarmers
  • Flask. Full.
  • A couple hats. The SIMMS Elmer Fudd. Some sort of beanie, and a windproof hat too.
  • A BUFF!
  • Xtra Socks
  • Hidden batches of Chocolate. A must.

On the terminal tackle and rod checklist we have it seems even more stuff in the winter months. We have added rod with our two handed option, actually a couple.

Rods and terminal tackle…

  • A couple nymph rods, a streamer rod,a dry fly rod, and a 2 handed rod for swinging.
  • All the streamers you own. A box full of pink nymphs. A couple dry flies like midge clusters and soft hackles.
  • A few add on leaders. VersiLeaders with differing sink rates for streamer and swinging success.
  • A SIMMS Nipper around my neck on a Fly Vines Lanyard

Relatively short list but the right tools for the job at hand. In the summer you can get away with a dry fly rod only. But the winter, albeit generally slow fishing, can introduce you to moments of brilliance. Short, quick moments.

Now all the comfort items that I love to stuff the truck with…

Zotz. It's where the Fizz Izz!
Zotz. It’s where the Fizz Izz!
  • Any number of Thermoses. 1 w/ hot chicken broth. Another w/ hot water. Yet another with coffee/Bailey’s combo. And yes, that is the plural of Thermos. Check it.
  • Random snacks that always includes jerky. I like peppered the most. Some sort of hard candy like Zotz. Maybe a half bag of Cheeto’s too.
  • More gloves.
  • A Mr. Heater. Good for standing around at the back of the car. Works in the boat as well.
  • More handwarmers.
  • And another flask, in case the 1st one has a hole in it.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]That pretty much covers it. You can add or subtract any number of items to this list. Car fishing and boat fishing are certainly two different operations. Choose accordingly.

The weather has changed for the better and you should be clear for take-off any day this week. Call us at the shop for an up to the minute fishing report. Remember we have a bundle of DEMO Spey Rods for you play with this winter. From SAGE, Echo, Orvis, T & T, and Loomis. Your Missouri River winter resource.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][us_grid post_type=”ids” no_items_message=”” columns=”4″ items_layout=”shop_trendy” items_gap=”” ids=”6902″][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][us_grid post_type=”ids” no_items_message=”” columns=”4″ items_layout=”shop_trendy” items_gap=”” ids=”6650″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

10 Missouri River November Streamers

10 Missouri River November Streamers

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]The month has settled in to weather and temps we are more comfortable with.

Not really the ZERO degrees stuff, but the overcast and snow and such is familiar territory for us in central Montana.

Fishing Montana’s Missouri River in all seasons requires more than one technique. More than one style. More than just one note.

So we show you some hot streamer flies for the month ahead. You can dredge these on your single handed 9′ 7weight wielding a heavy sink tip. You can strip them in rapidly with your 9’6″ 6 weight donning an intermediate RIO Outbound Short. You could swing it slow with your 12’6″ SAGE Method with a Scandi Short VersiTip Line. Your choice. Lots of ways to skin a cat.

Ninch, our resident fly guru, picked these patterns out for your November river streamer success.

Streamers Top Left to Right: Kronic Kreinik Red and Silver, Warpath’s Sculpin Whammy Tomahawk Tan, Hot Eyed Kreelex, Black Mohair Leech

2nd Row L to R: Morris’ Brown Trout Minnow, Warpath’s Egg Sucka Black and Purple, small black Woolley Bugger

3rd Row L to R: Baby Black Sculpzilla, Brown Skiddish Smolt, ?, Arnold’s Mozurri Minnow

Come in and browse through our well stocked streamer bins at Headhunters. We are open 7 days a week and here to help. Shuttles daily too![/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][us_separator height=”60px” size=”custom”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][us_grid post_type=”ids” no_items_message=”” columns=”4″ items_layout=”shop_trendy” items_gap=”” ids=”7550″][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][us_grid post_type=”ids” no_items_message=”” columns=”4″ items_layout=”shop_trendy” items_gap=”” ids=”7688″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Use your gas savings for fly fishing stuff!

Reduced gas prices this last month around America. Sounds like additional drops in fuel prices as we move deeper into the winter.

www.fuelguagereport.com states that the average US gas prices to drop below $3.00/gallon for the 1st time since 2010. They also state that this is the longest consecutive decline in gas prices since 2008.

Those are stunning facts. What’er gonna do with the all the extra dollars in your pocket?

If you save X dollars a week by saving $0.30/gallon at 25 gallons a whack totals $7.50. $30/month, $360/year.

What can you do with $360 fly fishing dollars? Here are a few ideas below. Feel free to add your own into the mix…

Hire a fly fishing sherpa or fly fishing concierge service. My plan has always been to employ this idea. You don’t want a guide but you like to have let’s say certain tasks performed before you arrive at the river?

A fly fishing concierge would…

  • Launch your boat for you.
  • Prepare the ice box. Your YETI would be pre-cooled and filled with your preferred assortment. Perrier, a nice yet varied selection of macro brews,a dn a flask of your favorite single malt scotch.
  • Rig the rods. 1 dry, i streamer, and 2 nymph rods. New leaders and tippets daily and clean fly lines.
  • Lunch. I like a selection of cheeses and meats. Crackers. Like a water cracker and a Ritz. Love a Ritz. Salami’s, prosciutto, smoked ham, a smoked cheddar, a soft French too. Pickles, capers, olives, pepperoncini’s. You know. The good stuff.
  • At the end of the trip you would just pull up the boat on shore and leave it for the concierge to pick up and clean, preparing for the next days voyage.
  • Perfect. Lower the stress level of preparing for the day. Your concierge would see to it that your fishing day was as pleasurable as possible.

Casting Lessons

DSC_2450
Casting lessons make you better!

Not as exciting as the fly fishing concierge service but probably more practical.A few casting lessons scattered throughout the year to get you to the point you want to be at this coming fly fishing season.

Some may want instruction for their upcoming saltwater trip. Others may want help with their tuck cast or any of the slack line trout casts.

Find the one who fits your learning style. This is important. Not all instructors are right for all individuals.

Then practice. Use the rest for a new fly line to treat yourself at the end of the process. You will also have more fun fly fishing because you will have more success! EZ dollars to fun conversion. Easy!

New Reel

Many fly reels are priced int he mid 300 range. A Nautilus, a SAGE, an Orvis, an Ebay find. Your choice. Get yourself some fly fishing jewelry with your gas savings.

Several New Fly Lines

Toss the old cracked and not slippery lines into the garbage bin. You will be happier every time you cast for the next year. Can’t remember when you replaced the fly line on your SAGE Z-Axis? Your Sweetwater Bamboo Classic? Need to upgrade your line for your new Loomis NRX LP? You should answer yes to all of the above.

The best thing beyond a casting lesson for you fishing improvement in the year 2015 ahead is to replace your fly lines.

Just do it. Smiling anglers, you, is what a new fly line will deliver.

An Upgrade on your next Guide Trip

DSC_0099
Go solo?

What kind of upgrade am I speaking about? Well, I’ll tell ya. Getting rid of that annoying fishing partner of yours who commonly hogs your water and thinks it is your fault! That is the only upgrade you need for fly fishing Nirvana. That $360 in gas savings can get you into a guide boat by yourself. Buy him, your asshole buddy, out of the equation.

Yet another way to smile.

P.S. If you like your fly fishing buddy, that is cool. Keep him in the boat.nJust use the money to tip your guide more. Everybody smiles! He likes new fly lines too!

Mish-Mash Fly Fishing Money

  • A partial fly rod
  • A down payment on your trip to the Missouri River
  • Lodging deposit for the Craig Trout Camp
  • A few dinners at Izaak’s
  • 7 rounds for the house @ Joe’s Bar
  • A rental car for the week fishing
  • A new kids rod by ECHO. The perfect gift for your fly fishing protege. $180 for the entire package rod, reel, and line @ Craigflyshop.com
  • A YETI Cooler
  • 2 Pair of Polarized sunglasses. Smith or Costa. Your choice. One for each season.
  • New SIMMS Waders. Or at least half of the cost. Stay dry and warm this coming year. Quality waders are worth their weight in gold. Is this the year for new waders?
  • 1 Howler Bros Gaucho shirt, dinner for 4 at the taco cart, a couple glow in the dark tarpon lures, a 24 pack of Corona’s, $4/gas, a good lantern, and a GoPro 3 camera. Produce night bridge fishing video in the Keys jumping big tarpon parlaying your fame into really nothing of value except for several hangovers in the future…if you are grasping at straws?!

Just a few ideas for all that dough you won’t be spending at the pumps this winter. Prices are bound to sky rocket as we approach the summer of 2015. You know another good idea is to buy your airline tickets for your fly fishing trips this coming summer in the winter. Cheaper flights? Take advantage of the drop in gas pricing this year and Use your gas savings for fly fishing stuff!

Echo Glass Spey

Echo Glass Spey Rod – First Look

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]With the resurgence of fiberglass fly rods, it was only a matter of time before someone brought archaic glass technology to the two-handed market. Leave it to ECHO to be the first with a production model (there are some blanks out there), and they’re bringing both switch and spey models to us this winter. I first saw these at the iCAST/FTD show in July, and the “wiggle-test” alone told me I must try them.

Here’s the product intro from Red at ECHO via Midcurrent:[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/106846577″][us_separator text=”GLASS TWO-HANDER ARRIVES” show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_column_text]So, there they are. Now I just need to give one a try. The one thing I know about non-graphite construction, is that I will either love it or hate it. There’s a lot more room for error when a manufacturer decides to go down the glass road.

We had briefly “grass-cast” the rod at our shop a few weeks ago during a visit from ECHO rep Brandon Prince. Loaded with a 510 Scandi, you could actually huck it off the sod. But that was our only test, and I wanted to give it a real workout before our Swing Season starts on the Missouri. Miraculously, an ECHO 12’9″ #7 glass two-hander arrives days before a scheduled Steelhead trip in Eastern OR. The perfect place to try it out.

[/vc_column_text][us_separator text=”FIT & FINISH” show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_column_text]Fit & finish are very nice on this rod. The blank is a classic glass color I believe aficionados refer to as “honey”. Very cool and the olive wraps look great on it. Guides are typical two-handed chrome.

I really like the grip and seat however. The grip is a classic “cork-only” style that you rarely see anymore. No, it doesn’t have 15 colors of burled and rubberized cork spaced throughout it. Which is fine by me. There is quite a bit of filler in the grip, but grips I see on rods costing 3X as much have the same. And at $300 I’m not going to say a thing.

I really like the reel seat. It has a brushed/satin finish that reminds me of glass rods from the 60’s and 70’s. It also has a cork insert which I like. It also stayed tight while fishing, and you can put a tremendous amour of force on this rod, which often loosens reel seats and ferules (which also stayed true).

The rod comes in a nice natural colored cordura case with sock that’s a “rounded-triangular” shape.[/vc_column_text][us_separator text=”CASTING” show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_column_text]I fished the ECHO glass 95% of my trip, lined up with a Airflo Compact Scandi 480gr head. The grain window is 480-590, and is designated correctly. While I will probably stick with the 480gr Scandi, I think I will recommend a 510gr for most casters in our shop. For Skagit systems, I will most likely use a short head at the top of the grain window.

Casting is effortless with this rod at short and medium distances. While obviously not the most powerful stick you’ll throw, the slow and smooth action definitely puts a smile on your face. And while slow, is not what I’d call “glacial”. It’s has some pop, and a ton of latent energy gets built up when you load the rod. You can really crank on this thing. Which is fun.

While the slow action makes you think Skagit, it throws a Scandi with power and accuracy, though you do need to nail the timing at longer distances. It doesn’t take long.

Speaking of longer distances, the ECHO glass easily casts the distances most anglers will find themselves fishing. I never felt that I didn’t have enough rod or distance, but I could get to “the end” of what the rod was capable of doing comfortably. I think using a 510gr line (or a longer head) would have added a few feet and some “punch” to the end of my  longer casts.

There are a few situations where fiberglass might hurt you. Giant rivers like the Thompson, and very windy rivers like the Snake and Deschuttes come to mind. But other than those unique places, I think this rod can be an everyday driver for most anglers. If I was packing for Smithers today, it would be the first rod in the car.

I didn’t use the ECHO glass for Skagit purposes, but I have no doubt that it launches a short head and a big tip. I will find out shortly here on the Missouri. Watch out Walleye.[/vc_column_text][us_separator text=”FISHING” show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_column_text]The big concern with fiberglass (or bamboo) is the extra weight you’re carrying while holding your rod. A few ounces add up over the course of a week. The first thing I noticed when I picked it up, was that it was lighter than expected, and the butt diameter of the blank was much narrower than I expected. Good job ECHO.

But, it is heavier than some of the most modern graphite rods. The other rod I fished during the week was a similarly sized Sage METHOD 12’6″ #6, and I definitely could feel the difference. The weight does add up over several long days of fishing, but I don’t think I would call it a deal breaker. Smaller anglers or those with wrist/elbow/shoulder problems might find it an issue.

I found the rod light enough to balance with a Hatch 9+ no problem. My 7+ was a touch on the light side, but I would have used it without complaining. The rod does not feel like it needs an extra-heavy “spey” reel.

The slow action and extra weight do make mending a breeze, however. Long mends were effortless.[/vc_column_text][us_separator text=”CONCLUSION” show_line=”1″ line_width=”default”][vc_column_text]The ECHO Glass two-hander is a great rod, and what I would call an unbelievable deal. A glass Spey rod for $300 could sell as a “gimmick” rod. Something you break out here and there for the challenge, comments and a few laughs. But this rod is not a gimmick. It’s a great fishing and casting tool. It really has few weak points, and for most anglers it may be all they need. The easy casting stroke will be less frustrating for newer two-handed casters as well. And for $300 you can easily afford to pick one up for a second (or 3,4,5) rod. More importably, those new to two-handed fishing can get a great rod without selling your roommates gear on ebay.

We will also be carrying the 12’6″ #6, and will have a switch or two to play around with.

All for now, but expect to hear and read more about the ECHO Glass Spey and Switch rods from us this winter.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

KAST Steelhead Glove

KAST Steelhead Gloves

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]KAST Steelhead Gloves are truly the best.

We have been selling these bad boys to our customers since they came out of the mold and the KAST Steelhead Glove continues to be our best selling foul weather glove!

A must have for those who swing 2 handed rods here in central Montana’s wild river like the Missouri River near Craig MT. A must for those who travel over the divide and head out to the coast this winter for Spey Swinging Fun. You gotta try these kick ass KAST Steelhead gloves.

KAST Steelhead Gloves

Mark has been attached to a pair for over two years now. Just got a second pair for clients in the boat. Sara & John just returned from the Grand Ronde and utilized them daily. Ninch loves his pair as he swings a two handed rod all winter long. Julie uses hers as well but not always for fishing. They work very well scraping snow from the windshield and snowmobiling, sledding, ice fishing, shotgunning birds, shoveling the driveway, a pair in the proverbial glove box for 3 season emergencies…

KAST Steelhead GlovesSara wanted to mention the two other gloves offed by KAST Gear. There are the two versions of the Raptor Glove. One with index and thumb fingers chopped for fishing dexterity and the other with all the fingers. The Raptor is a great not so wet fishing glove.

The Raptor is perfect for ripping streamers all day long from the boat in November and December. It is perfect for changing flies and sink tips to find the right trout zone. Use the full fingered version of the KAST Raptor for rowing while you buddy chucks those streamers way too close to you head.

We have all 3 KAST Gloves in the store for your winter pleasure. The Steelhead are obviously the most popular but the KAST Raptor is gaining lots of Headhunters fans!

Boat Fly Review Of The Year So Far

boatflies
Patterns from the island of discarded/forgotten flies.

Since the spring, the employees here in the shop have been saving all the discarded/forgotten flies that have been left in our rental Adipose drift boats. The picture accompanying this post shows the flies that we’ve accumulated thus far.

They offer a pretty good snapshot of how the fishing has been. There are rainbow Czech nymphs and sowbugs from the winter/spring. There are tungsten San Juan worms and wire worms from the spring’s high water period. There are purple comparadun and Stormchaser dries from the spring Baetis period. There’s a March brown in the mix as well. Then there are the pale morning dun emergers and rusty spinners of late spring/early summer, some caddis dries and emergers, a yellow sally nymph, a Buzzball, the ants of summer, the ever present Zebra midges, and some streamers in the mix as well.

If you look closely at the photo, you’ll probably recognize a pattern or two that you caught some fish on this year. Czech nymphs, Zebra midges, Little Green Machines, rusty spinners, pheasant tails, CDC and elk dries, Buzzballs, San Juans… These patterns are definitely mainstays here on the Missouri River. Maybe some of the flies in the picture even belonged to you once. A few of them look pretty chewed up…

While cleaning our rental boats in the next couple of months, we’ll probably find some more trico flies, a callibaetis or two, some baetis/pseudo imitations, hoppers, more caddis (hopefully some of the October variety), and the streamers of the fall. Maybe we’ll throw another picture up here on the blog as the collection grows.

What will you be fishing this fall on Montana’s Missouri River? Do you agree on the Boat Fly Review of the Year so far?

Make your own memories this fall here in Craig. Get on it and we’ll keep the coffee warm for you.

Fly Tester by Flymen Fishing Co.

The Fly Tester at work testing some streamers in the shop.
The Fly Tester at work testing some streamers in the shop.

The newest addition to the growing fly tying arsenal at Headhunters Flyshop is the Fly Tester by the Flymen Fishing Co.

Have you ever tied up a dozen flies of some new pattern only to find out that they didn’t perform the way you had hoped when you got them in the water? The Fly Tester was designed to allow the fly tier to avoid this situation by observing the action of flies immediately after tying them.

In a nutshell:  DESIGN → TIE → TEST → CATCH FISH

The tank is best suited for testing streamers, but will also show how nymphs  drift in current and how dries skate on the surface (think mouse patterns or skating October caddis).

To see the Fly Tester in action, you can stop by the shop, or check out this cool, short video below.

Key features of the tank include:

  • “BEST IN SHOW” Award Winner at the 2014 International Fly Tackle Dealer show
  • High quality, crystal-clear, acrylic construction
  • Bi-directional water flow with upper, middle, and lower sections that allow you to swim up to 3 different types of flies (streamers, nymphs, and surface flies) at the same time
  • Flow tube that can swim streamers up to 12″ in length
  • Slim line design that is lightweight (less than 8 lbs.) and with a small footprint for use at the fly-tying desk (height is 12” x width 3.5” x length 24”)

Next time you’re in the shop, feel free to bring in some of your homegrown flies to give them a swim in the tank. We’ve also been testing a lot of the flies from our bins and noticing some new things about how they truly perform in the water.

If you’re interested in getting a Fly Tester tank of your own, they retail for $285 and we’d be happy to order one for you.

Sun Bum

Sun Bum Sun Products

Sun Bum ProductsWe are all about this hot new sunscreen product we bought in the store last month.

It goes on easy, has a non greasy feel, and smells a little like coconut. I’s say we dig it!

Lots of different sizes and sun proofs from 30SPF to 70SPF. Most of the guides are applying the 70 while the rest of the gang has been opting for something less like the 50SPF or the 30SPF. The easy spray on version is gaining strength with anglers as you do not have to foul your hands or fly.

Small and large bottle available. Try the lip shit too. Banana and Grapefruit flavors will keep you smacking all day long.

Sun Bum Tips

  • Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going out in the sun to allow maximum absorption and protection.
  • Make sure you’re applying enough sunscreen (at least 3 tablespoons to cover your entire body). Reducing the quantity lowers the level of protection significantly. Pay special care too more sensitive areas, such as your ears, nose shoulders, cleavage and neck.
  • Don’t neglect hard to reach and easily forgotten places, such as your ears, feet and upper back.
  • Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours. Apply more frequently after swimming, sweating or toweling.
  • We know it’s tough, but try to avoid intense mid-day sun from 11:00 am and 2:00 pm during the hot summer months.
  • If you are taking medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist to make sure it’s okay to spend time in the sun. Some medicines can make the skin more sensitive to the sun’s rays.
  • Protect children. Children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of UV radiation and they often spend more time outdoors than adults. Parents should take special care to protect them from the sun using protective clothing, hats, sunglasses and sunscreens. Keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight

Check out all the cool media stuff at the Sun Bum Blog

A few more tips for your sun protection the remainder of the summer. You know you should rock the sunscreen in the winter too. The UV Rays are still around!

SAGE Salt at Headhunters Fly shop

SAGE Salt at Headhunters Fly Shop

Brian O’Keefe said it was the best rod at the show. The best rod he had ever cast.

Generally whatever Brian O. of Catch Magazine says about fly rods, if you have seen him cast you would know, we tend to agree with.

John brought in the SAGE Salt based on two things. B.O.’s comment and John’s belief that you will agree.

Get a SAGE Salt for you upcoming saltwater trip to the Keys, the Seychelles, the Bahamas, the Biloxi Marsh, the Delta, the Vineyard…you may want a tool as good feeling and precise as the SAGE Salt.

It’s fun to cast too.

Come in and try one out after wandering Montana’s Missouri River.

Hopper Time

Missouri River Hopper Time

It si pretty good for the ‘ol hopper on the Mo.

Well, not too good for Mr. Hopper himself. But pretty good for those tossing them in the water.

We got lots. Lots in the bushes, lots clacking on the banks, and a few in the river. The Missouri is not the world’s best hopper river, but we get by.

Trico’s are still rolling in big numbers most every morning and that is the focus until the last spinner is inhaled by some persnickety Rainbow Trout.

Missouri River Hopper Time

Then it’s time for a quick bite and cold Diet Coke. Tie on the hopper and hope!

I love having hopper affairs during the late summer. It is the finest. Many love the small sipping daintiness of the trico’s…I love the gulp a a good hopper eat. It is really cool.

Get your RIO Perception fly line and get after it. The head on that classic hopper type fly lone is just right for picking up 25′ and chucking it back at the bank. A RIO Grand is not too bad either. But the Perception is our favorite late summer fly line. Check it out next time you are loading up on hoppers. Try a new line too. Just like Christmas in August.

We are digging the foams here in Craig. Get yourself a bottle of GINK, douse the foamie, and watch it get eaten!

Staying a couple days? Try one day on the Missouri and one day not eh Blackfoot across the divide. A perfect two day plan!

LAte August Missouri River Flies

Late August Missouri River Flies

Late August Missouri River Flies that are hot this week and let’s hope this coming week too. The fishing in the morning is damn good if you are in the right spot with the right fly. What is the right fly? Some of these below are sure to get the job done.

Hopper fishing has been good with your favorite generic terrestrial flies coming on strong too. Trico’s still really strong. Saw one of the biggest Trico hatches and consequent spinner falls of the year on Friday. Saturday too? Maybe.

Late August Missouri River Flies

Row 1 top to bottom: Donkey Kong Hopper, Parachute Hopper, Morrish Hopper Pink, Burk’s Spent Hopper.

Row 2: Rainbow Czech Nymph, Military May Black, Tailwater Sowbug, Harrop’s Soft Hackle Bead Thorax Black, Magic Fly Tungsten BWO.

Row 3: Black Zebra Midge, Beadhead Poly Wing Emerger Black, Little Green Machine, Juju Baetis, Purple Lightening Bug.

Row 4: Arrick’s Ant, Glitter Ant, Fire Beetle, Storm Chaser.

Row 5: Snow Shoe Midge, Hi-Vis Trico, Passages Magic Fly Trico, Two Wing Trico Spinner, Purple Craze.

Hot flies in the shop this week. Hot flies on the water too. What flies work for you? Only you can know that secret. If you need a helping hand or suggestions on what is working don’t be afraid to swing and and have a cup of coffee and peruse the Headhunters fly bins. It really is fun fly shopping.

Ninch, Sara, Julie, John, Braden, Max, and Mark are ready to talk fly fishing. See you this late August on the quiet Missouri River.

Strike Foundry was created by Chef Marko to increase sensitivity and sight. The two most important aspics of any good strike indicator. Feel and vision. Period.

Strike Foundry Stealth Indicators

Strike Foundry Stealth Indi’s are just that. Stealthy and highly sensitive to subsurface movement of the fly.

There have been may bobbers that have down the pike in the recent past. Thing-A-Ma-Bobber held high court for some time but there is movement in the Indi World for sure.

Strike Foundry is pushing hard. Easy to throw, extremely lightweight to detect even micro movements from trout living and eating below the surface. Sometimes on the bottom. Check them out on your next trip through the store in Craig.

3 Ways to Rig

In Line

In Line. The simple and easy route. Not too good for our fishing here on the Missouri River as we need to detect subtle indicator movements. But it is one of the 3 ways to rig.

Loop Over

Loop it over like you would any similar bobber. Easy, easy to move, easy to detect strikes. Hit ’em hard! Double it if you want it to stay longer. Loop it over, then twist 1/2 turn, and loop again. Easy peasy.

Right Angle

Right Angle style is our favorite way to rig the Strike Foundy Indicator. Using the gray portion as the bottom of the rig, tie in 2 pieces obviously at right angles to each other and fish away. This style of rigging gives you the ability to see the direction of the fly in relationship to the fly line. Works perfectly.

The Right Angle style. We like this the best!

I enjoy the Strike Foundry Bobber because of the Right Angle usage. Super sensitive for the most discerning of indicator anglers. It rules. Lots of color ways coming to the shop soon. I even hear there is a special color way coming…more on that later.

Strike Foundry is headed up by our friend from the Driftless Region in SW Wisconsin.A dream to get a better indicator not he market. Good work Marko. We love the product.

Stop in and see the bobber selection at Headhunters which is extensive and will include the Strike Foundry Indicator this week!

Check out the Strike Foundry Website here and the Strike Foundry Facebook Page here. Enjoy!

SIMMS G5 Technology

SIMMS G4 Gore-Tex Pro Shell

Stay dry longer. Longer than ever? That’s what the fellows at SIMMS are saying.

Are you ready for fall yet? We are not. But we are beginning to prepare ourselves for what Mother Nature brings us in the ways of weather.

I do know from experience that you certainly do not want to be left out on the cold and rainy baetis afternoons fishing the Missouri River. October can be cruel. November with BWO’s popping before your eyes…comfort and a good reach cast come to mind.

SIMMS is all hopped up on the Gore-Tex Pro Shell and the G4 Pro, and we agree. Drier longer. A damn good thing for anglers.

We like to keep dry as well. The Mo fishes all 12 months which is different than most every other river on this Big Green Earth. Not many rivers can claim fishable waters for that length of time. We can. The shop is open daily, nearly 365 days a year.

So we get used to fishing in inclement weather. Hard to believe while it is 97F as I write this rain oriented product article. But she is hiding around the corner. We generally see snow falling from the freaking sky buy the second week in September. Not much. Usually.

So we prepare earlier than we would like. Hand warmers back in the boat. Stocking up on propane bottles for boat heaters. Cleaning the soup from last spring from the Thermos…yuck! Hope it’s not Cream of Chicken!

Gloves, warm hats, SIMMS G3 Waders and your best rain jacket. In this case the G4 Pro.

All the bells and whistles come with the King of all SIMMS Rain Gear. It is truly the leader of the pack.

We also like the SIMMS Bulkley for its waterproofness and its built in warm liner. Awesome. The SIMMS Acklins is appreciated by all that try it and the SIMMS Slick for those wanting bombproof longer shitty weather garment.

We have all you may need for the fall here fishing Montana’s Missouri River. A fully stocked fly shop with Craig  Montana’s only SIMMS Dealer. Shirts, pants, waders, wading boots, hats, gloves, and many other killer SIMMS accessories available here.

As the Trico’s wane in September you can start fantasizing about cool foggy Montana mornings with October Caddis and Baetis flies on your brain. We are starting to think along those lines…

Why I love my SAGE Method

Why I love my SAGE Method

I used to be the soft rod guy. No more. I am a fan of the stick that gets the most work done. Do work Son!

That is the SAGE Method. A work horse if there ever was one.

I look at the bevy of fly rods available to me in the morning and I nearly always pick out the 5 and 6 wt SAGE Method. The only time the line up changes is when I add a couple SAGE One rods for good measure.

Yes, the SAGE One is probably the better all ’round fisher of the two, but if you like go fast and horsepower all the time, as I do, then the Red Rod is the clear choice for daily angling.

The Method can fight fish too. Just faster.

Top 10 Reasons I love my SAGE Method

  1. Horsepower. None beats it.
  2. Hyper fast casting accuracy. True flight after you stop the rod every time.
  3. It’s Red. Trans Am’s are red. Coca-Cola is red. The Red Rocker likes Red…just watch
  4. It goes anywhere you want to go. Long, short, into the wind, along with the wind. She goes along for the ride, in fact she is driving!
  5. The best all around casting machine on the market. SAGE got this rod right in the trout sizes.
  6. I like the 5, the 6, the 7, the 8, the switch, the 9…you get the drift there don’t you. Commonly trout rods have a couple sweeties in the line. All the red rods are sweet.
  7. The fish fighting machine. Whip ’em fast and get them in. No tired fish when using the Method.
  8. Everything is better in red. The SAGE Method is the tough guy rod for tough guys. Or just fella’s who like to own it. Use it for trout fishing and beyond. Whipping up on a big ‘ol Tarpon is cool too. Getting to the Tiki Bar sooner making everybody happy.
  9. Knocks out the wows in your line when casting. The Konnetic Technology truly does work. Watch a few different anglers cad the red rod and judge for yourself. Stop in and try the SAGE Method anytime.
  10. A World Class Dry Fly Rod. Can stand up to the test. Your test. A nymphing machine. Stiff enough to set the hook at long distances and carry heavily weighted split shot ridden rigs! Streamers? With ease.
