[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Cooler temps will prevail this week as uncommon July temps will be gracing us dawn til dusk.

Looking like no temps over 80F for the week and night time temps in the lower 50’s. That is what the doctor ordered for sure.

Soggy angling this last weekend as the rain came down in bunches. The dry fly bite? Not bad but those who roll with the punches whacked ’em on streamers and nymphs. The streamer fishing was just awesome according to HH guide Beth Langell. Max Mattioli said the nymph bite wad damn good…and many others agreed!

Back to the future and the dry fly bite. Most are here to toss the dry against some pretty difficult trout. They certainly are getting harder daily as we move through the historically great July. Don’t foul it up early in the game. Some fish will disappear even with the perfect drift right outta the gate. So approach softly and quietly and stealthily and quiet and secretly and be super-sneaky! Then you have a fighting chance.

First drifts are still huge. They never fall out of favor. The 37th drift…not so good.

Best Trico hatch of the young Trico season yesterday on the upper river. The lower river? Good Trico’s down there too. THe middle? Maybe. Some bigger flies out and about with the black flying ant around daily.

Sally’s? Gone.

PMD’s? Anemic but the spinner fall can bring some fish to the surface for sure. The Rusty Spinner never falls from grace. Some talk on the Headhunters porch about the Captive Dun getting you to raise a few of the tougher ones. Words of Wisdom. The Trapped Dun is hot too.

Caddis? Good. Flights in the am with some good action blind casting before the hatch. Put the nymph away in the am and get some quality casting practice targeting fish on the drive by. Skittering caddis int he pm can bring the fish to hand as well. Find a good skitterer and fish it. Dead drift it for best success unless you are some kind of world class skitterer. Those of you, the very few, who know how can get some amazing action.

Dragging it is different than skittering it.

Spruce Moths around too. Smaller this year. The Spruce.

Hoppers? Yes.

Ants? Yes per above.

The fishing has been going south, the dry fly bite, about 2ish. Depends on the day but the best time for the sipping trouts is earlier than later.

But, the Nite Bite is pretty strong. A few are staying out late or going out later for the evening experience. You could be that guy. And why not. Skating caddis galore. And that nighttime PMDealio.  A strong suggestion is to forgo the PMD and focus on the caddis. Smarter money.

Bring your rain jackets and warmer jackets for the morning and T-Storms that are in the forecast daily. If you forget we have plenty of high speed Gore-Tex from SIMMS. We’d love to sell you one, but a warning follows…Bring rain gear in the summer, winter, spring and fall for your Montana journey. You might need it.

Lots of kick-ass flies in our bins with sunscreen, sungear galore, sun hats, ball caps, logo wear, GINK, TroutHunter 5.5X, RIO 12′ Leaders, SAGE One fly Rods, the only SIMMS dealer on the Missouri River, shuttles, ice, and the friendliest staff on the river.

Shop open daily from dawn til dusk.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 7.10.15

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 7.10.15

Weekend fun ahead.

I’ll try to stay on track with this fishing report as the last post was awesome. A weight lifted form my shoulders. Thanks. Love it.

Warm weather will greet you and some smoke in the airways. Highs in the lower 80’s and even dipping below at times.

Bugs all over the river or not. Depends on the day for the Trico’s, PMD’s and Caddis. Choose your reach and cross your fingers. The best is on the upper. Or the lower. The mid section has not been all that productive for either the nymph or the dry.

So go where you want. It’s all good brah.

Lots of anglers around as we move into the peak of the peak season. Wade anglers, boats, and this weekend some pleasure floaters too. Fridays have been the start of the pleasure floater weekend too. They get on it. Go early if you want some tuber solace.

PMD’s the last week not as good as the previous week. They are not done by any stretch though. We should have them around for another…?

Trico’s daily on the upper. And the lower. Not so much int he middle.

Weeds worsen as you head downstream. Until the rapids, then they magically shake out.

Downwinged caddis are all the rage. PMD spinners still get it done. Cripples are not a bad idea either. Trico spinners and the double winged versions are good. Trico duns can get it done and the CDC emerger is cool too.

Head out nymphing with weight flies, THead PT’s, worms, FB’s, Silvey’s Pupa’s, tiny beaded slender bodied nymphs, Zeeeb’s, Trigger nymphs, Frenchie’s, Micro-Mays, Tailwater Tiny’s, and a bunch of other techy tiny mayflies of your choice.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 7.10.15
Average for the month.

Should be a pretty sound weekend with a ton of folks here. Most of the July anglers make their annual pilgrimage to the Missouri River. Some m,ay even pop over the hill to the Blackfoot. You should. It is pretty nice over on the west side. Ask us for a trip over if you wish or integrate it into your annual July trip.

Night fishing can be good, and cann be bad. You have to go to know. Late shuttles and helping out the afternoon angler is one of our specialties. Ask our very fishy staff about their recent travles. they are out and fishing every moment they are not on the river, or at Joe’s…

Shop open damn early and open quite late. Have a rack of ribs at Izaak’s and a night cap over at Joe’s Bar. You deserve it.

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]No bugs yesterday. Some here and there, but not really any hatching action to speak of.

A short Trico hatch on the upper and a bit of the lower.

That is the honest poop.

Today? Who really knows. Warmer temps should bring the bugs back. Although he PMD’s did make a small appearance on Tuesday. Sunday in the cold and rain weather? Good Trico hatch in the morning. So before you begin to freak out, keep in mind that Mother Nature works in strange ways. Strange ways.

The weather for the week is forecast for sunnier skies and air temperatures on the more seasonal side. What should you do? Fish I say.

PMD’s on the entire river with the highest populations on the upper reaches. Duns still on the menu but some of those trout will give you fits while engaged in the catching/fooling game. Some reports of un-catchables showing up. You know the trout. The Un-catchable Trouts are out and about. Give them a shot. Good luck. And congrats in advance if you can it done. If not, no worries man. We all get beat buy at least a few of the good ones.

Some nice trout in the river this summer. Is it a huge fish summer? No, not really. But nonetheless some really nice fish. Still looking healthy.

Caddis are still the patterns that most are touching the rising trout with. Caddis. For years most called this a caddis river. Not necessarily a mayfly joint. And there there were some that always came for the Trico’s.

The Trico’s are into the 2nd week. You should see a pattern of morning hatches with predicatbel spinner falls late morning. Get out early and enjoy the fun.

Love the symphony of sipping trout.

The nymphing fellers are singing a bit of the blues. Difficult bite at times and the weeds can foul up the hard sexy bank. What to do? Cast off that weed and get back in the water. Ask any local angler and they will have a technique for removing the weeds from your fly and line.

Good nymphs include bigger worms, any number of smaller narrow bodied mayflies like the Military May, Peep Show, Micro May, Ju-Ju PMD, Magic Fly, Zebra’s and slender PT’s. Some have been strong arming them with bigger Tungsten PT’s, Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ear’s, smaller softies, and your favorites too!

Shop open at 530am for a spell while we drift through the remainder of the month. Open early for any and all your Mo River needs. We got a ton of flies, over a dozen sunshirt models, hats galore, BUFF, SIMMS SunGloves and SunMasks, SAGE Demo Rods, RIO demo fly lines, free coffee, and the best bullshit on the Mo.

Blackfoot River Montana Fishing Report 7.7.15

Blackfoot River Montana Fishing Report 7.7.15

Blackfoot River Report from yesterday posting today on the Headhunters Fly Fishing Blog.

Hoot-Owl conditions, closing at 2pm,  with no weeds an good fishing. That is the bones of this report.

Got to the River Junction early and not alone. One dusty SOB heading in there.

Most boats were guided and filtered off the boat ramp easily.

Slow the first couple hours as Missoula legend Tom Jenni said to me floating by that they were a little stingy in the mornig for him too.

Then the sun rose over the canyon as a good bite ensued.

Golden Stones were the key for us. Even threw the dropper for awhile in the late am with some success too. Blooms Tung Dart and the Iron Sally.

Saw some good PMD’s for a while too.

A real nice time across the divide finished off with a burger at Trixi’s.

Perfect.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 7.6.15

Many river with Hoot-Owl closures around the state. Not the Mo.

Phone calls daily about what the fishing, flows, and water temps will be like tomorrow, August, and even October.

The short answer is we will be OK.

History would tell us that the river will be open in August. We survived drought years on ’01, ’02, ’03, ’04, ’05, ’06, ’07. And that with low flows. Only one time did the river exceed the 3500cfs mark in that time frame.

Screen shot 2015-07-02 at 9.25.46 PM
Water flows for 2015

Today the river flows are 3950cfs. The USBR tells us they will hold at this level for the summer. 4100cfs is the projected flow. The Canyon Ferry Reservoir is 97.3% full. The water temps are lower than the last week from our cold spell yesterday where air temp did not rise above 55F. A 40 degree temperature change from the 4th. Check out the water temps…

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 7.6.15
A big fall yesterday

So, based on history, we will be OK. Mother Nature holds the cards and we cannot see into the future. So, take that as you will and either come out, or stay home. I hear the Caverns of Mystery are killer this time of year.

The fishing report for the Mighty Mo is as follows…

Trico’s are on the rise. Sunday morning in the light rain the bugs went bananas. A great hatch and the first mega hatch for the Trico’s of the summer. They are right on schedule as they generaly come the the 5th of July. That in my book, is the historic first hatch of the year. The 5th is the arrival date.

Lots of patterns will get it done. Watch for the duns to get eaten early in the hatch. They generally stop eating the tasty dun as the month passes by. But early on they do lie the dun. The emerger can be good too. A CDC pattern will suffice. We also like the Quigley’s Cluster Dun with a ply wing. Good stuff.

PMD’s have not been as spectacular as they were last year. We did not have a good caddis last year and the good PMD’s saved our ass.

The PMD spinner fall has still been good. The hatches not as good as stated above. But we should have the PMD around for another month or so. The best flies have been traditional poly winged spinners, Harrop’s anything spinners hi-viz and CDC, Captive duns, transitional duns, and even the dun too!

Caddis flies all throughout the resource. Good to great mornings and afternoons for the caddis fly. Has it been easy? Nope. the first part of the dry fly season is easier thatn the latter half. The fish do get smarter. And the fish above Craig are smarter too. Try below Craig for fish that are not PhD level…yet.

Skittering caddis flies are all the rave in the afternoons. Stocking Wings, Angelo’s Burn Winged, X2 Caddis, Red Stag Caddis, Double Duck, Missouri River Specials are all god times fro you on the river.

Sally’s are not around often enough to make a difference. But having a few in your box is not a bad idea!

Ants and hoppers are on the cusp. Just sayin’.

Give us a shout if you need up to the minute fishing reports and such. We are open all day long for any river needs like sun protection, shuttles, flies, coffee, free honest info and of course our porch is always open for the only fly shop in downtown Craig with free cell coverage, we have a booster, and the wi-fi too.

Check out our logo wear too. You gotta take something home for the kids and we have kids clothing and has!

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 7.1.15

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 7.1.15

Smiling faces in downtown Craig this week.

Lots of regular late June and July anglers ont he river whether they be wade fishing, drifting, or fishing with a guide the feeling in Craig is familiar and enjoyable.

Does every fish eat your fly? No.

Will they rise daily? In some spots.

Are there bugs around including PMD’s, Trico’s, Sally’s, and Caddis? Yes indeed.

The key to your fishing July Experience is to choose your favorite stretch and have at ‘er.  Enjoy your familiar water and catch a few, miss a few, and even land a few. The rec floaters are here daily as well but most are plenty friendly. The best way to handle folks running over your fish is to smile and realize that most are not doing it on purpose. It is all about intent. Those folks and floaters do not understand what our plight is. And why would they. Fly Flickers are a strange bunch and not many non-anglers know how nuts we really are.

Our spouses do though.

Good fishing all month long. We love July and enjoy the opportunities to cast at rising trout.

The weeds bother some and not others. The floaters bother some and not others. Some like the upper river and others the mid or lower reaches. Some like ham and some like turkey. Some believe this daily update and others do not believe a word we say. Sometimes the fish rise and other times they do not.

All your choice. Haters gonna hate. A democratic society we live in and we must understand that some complain and others don’t.

We for one are not complaining about nothin’. It is summer and the fishing ain’t easy.

A big heads up if you can recognize the trout that will eat the dry fly and the ones that just will not. Sometimes changing flies will get it done, and other times the fish just will not eat the one with the hook in it.

4th of July Party in Craig. Rocket to Uranus plays at 8pm at Izaak’s Porch with craziness beginning about 4, 5, 6, 7pm?

Shop open at 6am for your river needs. Happy July.

Top Ten List today on the Missouri River Fishing Report…

  1. Late June into early July. Most are heading out early. The heat has been a factor so get out there and get ’em. Take a Siesta, a nap, a full shift at Joe’s.
  2. Water temps are at 62F. Higher than normal? I really don’t know. But I do know that the dooms-dayers will tell you we are fouled. I try to stay more positive than that, they, them. Flows are at 4100cfs.
  3. 4th of July Party @ Headhunters. All day for America’s Birthday. BBQ, Beer, Fireworks.
  4. PMD’s are in style. The two hour period that you cannot catch them? I too am familiar. A PT is the way.
  5. Crips, spinnners, emergers, transitional duns, half duns, captive duns…plain old duns? Your choice. Every day seems to bring another story of success and failure. We love love June and July.
  6. DFO’s Unite.
  7. Weeds? Yes. More than normal? Maybe. Deal with it or go to the Madison.
  8. Caddis anglers are happy too. Good time in all sections. Skittering in the afternoon for your after noon fun. Get those PMD’s off of the line and change it up. Try the Stocking WIng, Missouri River Special, King’s River, X-Caddis, Buzzball, clipped Troth, Angelo’s Cut Wing or your fav. Swing it swinger.

“Cosmic Dude”

Dan Gard would have said this. Or did. Or is.

Have not spoken to Dan this year but gotta believe the Ghost of Dan Present is here…sayin’

“Cosmic.”

I second that comment Dan.

Cosmic is the word. Honest.

Dry fly fishing is as good as you make it. As good as you could expect it. As good as you dream abouyt.

Except for the conversion rate. That is totally up to you.

Do you have to land the fish to count it? Some do, some don’t and yet other don’t care at all about the landed trout.

They are into the entire experience. In its entirety.

PMD’s off daily on the upper. How many? Enough. Some days the hatch is magnified. Others not so much.

Caddis on the lower reaches is the key. Just like the upper river fish will take a caddis, the lower river fish will take a PMD…but both prefer the former, or latter?

Yellow Sally’s can be part of your day too.

Drakes? Yes. Read John’s post a few days ago about the occurrences…

Blackfoot? On fire.

The Missouri River? On fire.

DSC_3359
Rainbow Release on the Missouri River

I was asked at the bar how I thought the fishing was. I stated…“Damn good.” The feller asked why I thought it was as such and I stated back…“When do you ever have as many opportunities at rising fish than right now.” And he said…“You know you are right. I pass several, if not dozens of rising fish till I come upon one I want to tangle with. if I stopped and fished to every rising fish I would consider it unbelievable.”

It is because where else do you have the opportunities like we are so very fortunate to have here on the Missouri River in June?

“I ask you where?”

Nymphers are delighted and so are the dry fly anglers. The weather is hot and getting hotter.

Will we survive? Yes.

Is it over? No.

Will the bugs hatch in the sun? They always have before. PMD’s and Caddis and Sally’s and Trico’s and Ants and Hoppers…are all sunny weather bugs. No?

Is it hot this weekend, or forecast? Oh yeah.

We sure love the summer here in Craig, the epi-center of fly fishing on the Mo.  Fly shops, Joe’s Bar, Izaak’s Restaurant, Wolf Creek, Cascade…all of it.

Visit us daily @ 630am and the latest open on the river til 9pm.

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Some say this is the best time of the year. The weather is warm, the days are long, the wind is light, the bugs are popping…

All good things to have on your favorite trout fishery.

June is 2/3 of the way gone. Already! We have passed the summer solstice and now the days get shorter. Not for a while though. We will enjoy the warmth, the not too hot warmth throughout the week ahead realizing that the summer heat generally comes in the month of July. It is coming!

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 6.22.15

The State of the Missouri as it stands is as follows. Some may call it a fishing report, and they would be right. But here are the latest and greatest updates as we see it in downtown Craig Montana fishing the world famous Missouri River.

Familiar Faces in Craig Montana

The non-local locals have arrived in force. That only means one thing. It is game on. The dry fly fishing is good enough to fish all day long with the bottle of GINK staining your shirt from the time you roll out of your cot on the banks and look for early morning coffee. Go as early as you wish and find a few sipping before the hatches of the day get going.

Fish as late as you want as well. The caddis will keep you entertained until you cannot see you fly. Black and dark winged patterns will get you some bonus time after that sun falls behind the Rockies to the west.

Need something late in Craig? Headhunters Fly Shop open later than the rest til 9pm daily. Your late shuttle folks in town is Headhunters.

Missouri River Caddis Explosion?

The caddis are nearly everywhere. But if you have to fish the caddis all day long you should find yourself in the canyon section. Stickney Creek to Pelican is your best bet. Fish the down winged versions we love so well. X-Caddis, All Stages Caddis, CDC Stocking Wing Caddis, Para-Caddis, Translucent Emergers, Twightlight Caddis, Hot-Wing Caddis, Henryville for the classic anglers int he bunch, Missouri River Special or King’s River Caddis…the lower wing profiled stuff is good. Fish the Troth if you are so inclined. We like to clip the hackle from the bottom of those high floaters here on the Mo. The Buzzball is a good option too!

The upper river has yet to see the caddis explosion during the day but they are showing int he evenings and the daytime excitement will soon follow. The mid to lower reaches are on fire in the evenings. Head on down there and see for yourself. Actually the upper is good in the evenings too. Just not the shit hot bite we like to see int he summer. But that traditionally comes in July. June is reserved for the PMD.

Outfitter Stuart Dominick Casting at PMD Spinner Fish

PMD Love

PMD’s are on the upper and throughout the middle sections of the Missouri River. Most anglers are all hopped up on this bug. We are too. We have the Missouri River’s most extensive PMD selection for all your frustrations, your successes, and in-between as well. Read John’s article today about Fishing PMD Hatches.

The emergence happens about 9, or 10, or 11, or 12ish. The fish will eat some emergers as the bugs come off. Transitional duns, cripples, knock downs, and captive duns are all in the mix. How about a soft hackle or something that looks like a pheasant tail just below the surface? Good for a fish, or 5.

The spinner fall can happen anytime. Get out the flat winged spinners and have a ball. The Buzzball here is a good idea too. How about a sunken spinner? How about a beaded sunken spinner? All good ideas wen you are pulling your hair out, diving into your box several times, then tossing the whole box into the water.

Pretty good PMD fishing in the morning until sometime int he afternoon. Not a great evening pasttime. Caddis are made for that fix.

Yellow Sally’s

Not a great top water bug for us. Having said that the trout can get on them slashing in riffles and runs throughout the day in the early stages of the hatch. We have a few patterns that can get it done. The Outrigger Sally is the key though. You cannot have the wing profile too low on these insects.

The middle on the river and the lower reaches are seeing evidence of the Sally with this coming week getting stronger upriver too.

DSC_0268
The Farkas Party from Calgary having a ball on the Mighty Mo!

Terrestrials

The Missouri River has long been an ant river. Try any flying ant int he red, cinnamon, or black varieties and let ‘er ride. Long leaders with a dropper can add some entertainment when the hatch you are after is waning.

Missouri River Flows and Water Temps

4320cfs and 57F. Nice for the remainder of the summer. Cooler water temps for the time being. We want them to stay lower for a while. The air temps will rise later this week and the water temps usually follow suit.

The weeds have begun to move toward the surface. Weeds may be a problem this summer as they have been in the past. Some do not like them and find them annoying. I agree. Will they be problem this summer? Probably. Call us. We will say something like this…“Yep, weeds are here. Yep, nymhing can be tough with the weeds in the water column. Maybe you should just dry fly fish?”

Rental Boats, Guides, Lodging, Vet’s Boats, Demo Rods

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 6.20.15

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 6.20.15

As good as it gets.

For those who love to fish for the PMD eating fish.

Caddis too.

Lots of folks around and if you like solace and winter/spring/fall type conditions stop reading now. Now is not your time.

Dry fly anglers are here and having a ball.

As Ninch is fond of saying the fishing report or your personal success story is as simple as this…

“It’s as good as you are.”

If you can really cast well, present well, and drift like a stud you will be rewarded with plenty of fish that will find your flies attractive.

If you drag it around out there in front of the fish and alert the enemy, the trout, you are in the neighborhood…you will not find as much success on the dry fly.

Don’t alert the enemy you are even close. Just like trophy elk hunters the trout angler should be super stealthy. Do it.

  • Be calm.
  • Be quiet.
  • Present silently.
  • Set.

The nymphers are crushing with Worms, Frenchie’s, Peep Shows, S & M’s, Tung Death Metal, Military May’s, Hot Bead PT’s, Harrop’s Yellow and Black Softies, Nitro Caddis, Caddis Pupa, PMD brownish nymphs, Weight flies, Sows, Zebra’s, Two Bit Hookers, Gidget’s, Split Backs, Crack Backs, Tungsten Reckoners, Tungsten Redemptions…and many more!

Pick your stretch and get out there. The fishing from dawn til dusk is good enough to bring you on out here to Craig MT.

Izaak’s is open daily at 3pm for drinks and 4pm for fantastic evening fishing fare.

Headhunters Fly Shop is open daily @ 630am and open late for all your apres fishing needs til 9pm!

Blackfoot River Fishing Report 6.19.15

Blackfoot River Fishing Report 6.19.15

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]The big bugs have arrived and the fish are eating them. Salmon Flies fill the canyon and as of yesterday, the fish were hungry for them.

What will it be like today? No promises. I guess that deal is coming and going. I generally catch the hatch when it is going.

The river is greenish and perfect. It is falling too. 1480cfs at Bonner and falling rapidly.

Not as much pressure as I thought may be on the Blackfoot for a Stonefly hatch of this note.

A damn pretty float with a ton of fish on the big Salmonfly. What else could you want?

We love fishing on the other side of the divide. Why not take a day out of your busy Missouri River schedule and head over the hill. We’d love to introduce you to another Montana jewel.

Blackfoot River Fishing Report 6.19.15
Call up the folks at Blackfoot Angler for an update.

We always stop in the Blackfoot Angler for an update and a chat.

Breakfast at the Stray Bullet is almost a must and lunches are available too. A good stop on your way into the wilderness. The small General Store Blackfoot Commercial Company has an Espresso machine that will help those late nights at Trixi’s. And a gas station too! Lodging is good there as well with a few rooms available nightly.

All you need in a small Montana fishing town.

Dry flies are the norm on the Blackfoot River with big and bushy ones that we all can see attached to the end of your line.

The hatches coming off include a decent PMD, caddis, Salmon Flies, Yellow Sally’s, and some drakes too. Fun times all day long on this freestone across the divide.

Check out this video by Scumliner Media for an idea of how fun this trip can be!

Missouri River Montnaa Fishing Report

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 6.16.15

Bullet list Missouri River Montana Fishing Report today the 16th of June ’15.

  • Flows: 4690cfs. We should be holding at around 4100cfs for the summer. Inflows at Toston are about what the outflows are here. Normal procedure.
  • Water Temps: 56.5F. Cooled a couple degrees after the flows fell.
  • PMD’s: Daily. Look for the emergence before noon. Then fish on for a few hours. on discernible daily spinner falls of any notice. Save for one. But that should become part of your day in the next week. Floating mergers, trapped duns, and transitional duns are all the rage. That is the word in the bar. Reality? Sort of. PMD’s will drive you to drink.
  • Caddis: Still more popular on the reaches below Craig. Lots int he canyon and beyond. Flies that surf the film work the best.
  • Nymphers: Take the pupal version of what you are seeing in the sky and on the water and sink it.
  • Up down or in the middle? Your choice. All good my fishy friends.
  • Late night? If the weather is hot fish on. If not, drink at Joe’s and eat at Izaak’s.
  • The vibe is good and the bugs are out. Seasonable air temps have now put us back on our bug schedule. No longer are we 3 weeks in advance. water temps have leveled too and we can expect the 4.1K water levels for the remainder of the summer. Quite normal June conditions.
  • Dearborn River has fallen to 280cfs. The floating season is waning. The Pear is low. All of the feeders are low.
  • Shop open daily at 7am and open late for all your river needs.

We got the bugs you need.

Missouri River Dearborn River Montana Fishing Report 6.13.15

The fishing report is as follows…

Good everywhere. Some days better than others.

Caddis and PMD’s are the theme for the next month. Both creeks.

The Dearborn is on the latter part of the floating season. Today the Dearborn is falling and currently at 353cfs. A few more days? Yes, but below the magic 200cfs mark it is pretty difficult to float. You’ll be dragging your boat several times.

Salmon Fly patterns brought a few fish to the surface on Thursday. Saw quite a few bugs including masses of PMD’s. Caddis later in the day as we fished below the 2nd rock garden. A good trip for sure that unfortunately relatively short in length of season.

The Missouri River? It is game on fro the dry fly anglers. PMD’s and Caddis keep you busy nearly all day long. The wind in the past few days, mainly yesterday kept the flies at bay for a few hours…

Today a seasonal temperature of 72F and light winds. The fish at the time of press, 11am, are going bananas.

Honest. PMD’s get big browns all fired up.

The time is now. The time is in the near future. The time is now. The fish do get smarter everyday we pass through the summer.

Sally’s? Oh, maybe.

A few Dearborn shuttles today, and for the next few days as well. Call us for local and Dearborn shuttles.

Shop open early and late for all your trout needs.

Need lodging for the summer? Check out www.CraigLodging.com for lots and lots of options here in Craig MT and riverside up and down the Missouri River.

The water flows for the summer according to the USBR will hold at 4100cfs.

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Hot weather for the week.

It’s cool. PMD’s enjoy the high and bright sun.

The PMD emergence is the first true sign of summer. This is the moment when we can dash those awful winter and spring thoughts of snow, sleet, rain, wind. Unless we have our somewhat historical last storm of the winter season which can occur this week?

It doesn’t look like it but Mother Nature is a wild beast!

USGS.06066500.01.00060..20150601.20150608.log.0.p50

Flows? Here on the Craig River proper we are sitting at 6620. Normal? Yes. Will it get higher? Probably. Check out the chart above. Higher water in June is normal. We may see the June USBR projections today and we will pass them on as soon as we are able.

USGS.06054500.06.00060..20150601.20150608.log.0.p50So inflows above in conjunction with the reservoir level will lead us down the road of higher water.  The Canyon Ferry Reservoir is over the line this morning at 97.3% full. At 97% the Corp takes over and it is out of our hands.

What does that mean for our flows here below Holter Dam? Well, higher. When they reach the full lake level then historically they push the water through. Peaking the reservoir in the last week of June is the norm. So what does that mean?  It means that whatever the inflows at Toston are, they historically match the outflows at Holter. Inflows at 10K. Outflows at 10K.

Before you freak out let’s see what the projection is. Don’t freak out yet.

That Toston Flow Chart above should see some decline today. Or tomorrow. Most of the low lying water from the previous storms has moved through as we watch the smaller tributaries fall rapidly. This morning the Dearborn is at 545cfs. Not bad. As you can see the flows are diminishing rapidly.

USGS.06073500.01.00060..20150601.20150608.log.0.p50Float the Dearborn this week? Oh yeah.

The Blackfoot? Also coming into shape nicely. We love both of these tribes and fish when we can.

So you got that in your knowledge bank. The flows, the potentials, the whole deal. We see it as a good thing. Water for the summer. Water for the masses. Water for the people. Water for the trouts most importantly.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 6.8.15

Good to great. But not totally great yet. Some have good days, others not as good. The guided trips are producing as the nymphing game can be shaken up in these flows. The fish move around and it can take some time to locate them. Don’t be afraid to fish spring lanes with deeper bobber placements.

PMD and caddis nymphs rule the day  with the Worm still in the mix. Firebeads for some as they throwback to a month or two ago with fly selection. Lots of them leaving the store daily so it must be something to think about.

Yellow Sally’s should be in the water column soon? Those bigger stones too?

DSC_2798
They are coming. The caddis are coming daily

Dry fly anglers are getting more excited by the day. Almost consistent PMD hatches as we move into the second full week of June. In another week you can expect to see them daily. This week with the high and bright, as mentioned above, will bring it on in some reaches well. Evidence of the PMD all the way up the river with the concentrations mainly still below Craig.

Caddis are in fashion as well and again more bugs the lower you fish. X-Caddis, Translucent Pupa’s, Buzzballs, and the filmy companions can get it done.

Still the fish are not bothered and any number of patterns can work on any given day. The dry fly game is a bit easier to figure out than the nymph program. The trout get weird when water levels jump[ around.

Streamers? OK. But not the best time of year. Some success on flash flies has been reported from the staff and guides and a few bank anglers. Not much discussion as the dry fly is here and most are here for that reason.

We are entering our dry fly time of year and this river will support several factions of dry fly nuts. We encourage that gang and enjoy their discussions, company, and daily frustrations.

Call us up if any questions arise from this report or if you need even more info, a trip, some lodging, or just want to chat with somebody about the dry fly bite.

We are all ears here in Craig.

Headhunters Fly Shop open daily @ 7am and now open later til 9pm for your acres fishing hang. Late shuttles too. Need a new dry fly line? Why not come prepared for greatness with a new InTouch RIO Grand or Gold? You’ll be happier with a slippery floaty fly line…

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 6.5.15

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 6.5.15

The river is coming up. Good news for the remainder of this just yet began summer. We will have plenty of water as it looks like we will fill the Canyon Ferry Reservoir.

Currently climbing at 94.6% filled. A scant 2.4% to go! Nice. Mother Nature and the USBR got it right. Thanks to both!

The weekend weather also looks good. Temps in the 70’s and possibly 80 Sunday. You in? You coming?

Would it make you happier if you thought you had a chance to cast to a few rising trout?

Cross your fingers and find your sipping trout on the Mo. It is June and that is good news.

Sunny days and happy trout as the water temps are in the wheelhouse for the June bugs.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 6.5.15
PMD’s like this temp!

A smattering of PMD’s. They will pop this weekend? Maybe. Lots of caddis showing and more in the lower reaches. Still some micro-mays around and the fish are not afraid to eat them up either. Spinners, crips, skitterers, spents, emergent individuals, and just plain old duns are creating a texture on the surface that drives DFO nuts just nuts.

Nymphers are happy with the game right now tossing all kinds of PMD Nymphs. The Trigger Nymph, Peep Show, Military May Brown, Tungsten Redemption are my favorites for sure. Caddis Pupa’s are getting some attention too. I like the Bloom’s Weight Fly in Gold, Silvey’s Pupa, Translucent Pupa with the bead in it.

PMD
PMD’s for the week ahead courtesy of Headhunters Fly SHop

But the real talk in Craig is about the upcoming PMD. And I could not agree more. Classic mayflies with trout sipping them make trout fishing dreams come true.

  • Dries (L to R):  Cripple Thor PMD, Trapped Dun PMD, Quigley’s Half Dun PMD, Silverman’s Stacker Cripple PMD, Quigley’s Film Critic PMD
  • Nymphs (L to R):  Tungsten Split Case PMD, BH Poxyback PMD, Trina’s Angelcase Emerger, Ross’s UV2 Glitter Nymph Rust, Doc’s PMD, Trigger Nymph PMD
What is your story? Caddis or PMD’s. Love both.
The Dearborn is falling albeit slowly. The mud has all but slid downstream and you should have no fear fishing below it. How about fishing the Dearborn this coming week? Call us for information in regards to the DB. We’ll tell you all we know.
See you soon in Craig. We will be hanging at the shop daily 7am til 8pm. Reels, fly lines, info, coffee, guides, the best in lodging, stuffed fly bins of dry flies, all of the popular nymphs, killer logo wear, and friendly smiling faces.

First just a few…then a few more.

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]First just a few…then a few more.

Saw a few of those June Mayflies today.

The lower is heating up with that ill flighted Trichoptera Gang.

The water temps are up and down. Well within the temperature range of our annual yellow Emphemerella emergence.

USGS.06066500.15.00010..20150527.20150603..0.

First just a few…then a few more.

Will they come? Soon. Soon my friends. We are right on the cusp.

The water flows will coming up as well as we adjust for the above normal rainfall this early part of June. The reservoir is filling on time @ 92.8% at press time. Inflows at Toston above historical averages now and climbing to 13K and beyond with the shower activity around the upper Missouri River drainage.

Screen Shot 2015-06-02 at 8.31.50 PM
Water coming up on the Missouri River

The caddis flies continue to impress in the middle and lower reaches. The upper reach is clean and fishing well, most of the time.

The weather has been seasonal and predictably unpredictable. Rain, thunder, lightning, sun, calm, overcast, and wind will make up the majority of your day out there. That is the June status quo.

Don’t get caught with your proverbial pants around your ankles without the proper gear. It can snow this month and commonly we see our last snow fall near the second week of June. Just sayin’. Bring good rain gear and warm clothing.

The bugs are coming. Soon.

First just a few…then a few more.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report June 1st 2015

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report June 2nd 2015

Welcome to June. Great fishing, great fellowship, great times.

And some folks around too.

In a couple days we will have the water projections for the month and months ahead. Until then we will enjoy the 4000cfs range and the coming bugs. Until the perennial June flies make their anticipated emergence we will sees couple more BWO’s, a couple random mayflies like March Browns but more likely Callibaetis and Mother’s Day Caddis.

The caddis on parts of the river in the sun can bring a good good bite. If you do not see the sun out you may not see as many caddis. Food for thought.

We do love the month of June here in Montana. It is green.

The Dearborn is still running above 1000cfs and the LPP is in shape and fine. Sheep Creek also running clear.

Canyon Ferry is at 92.8% filled and filling rapidly! Inflows 11K with outflows at 3500cfs. Good news for summer water flows!

The rest of the game? Waiting for the bugs. Today and this week with rain on the mind we will wait and see. The water temps are rising slowly as we make our way into the wettest Montana month.

Bring your PMD nymphs, your caddis dries and nymphs, your streamer boxes, your BWO’s, a box of beverages of your choice and go out there.

Floats above the Dearborn are more common with the mud…but not everybody is fishing above the DB.

This month can bring weird weather so always pack appropriately. Rain gear is a good idea. Warm clothing is a good idea. Hot coffee is a great idea. Hot chicken broth? Oh yeah!

Still some time with only a few boats on the water this week. Then the cork comes off.

Shop open at 7 daily for all your river needs and the best in flies, fly lines, and information at Headhunters Fly Shop in Craig.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 5.26.15

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]The weekend is beyond us as we move into the last week of May.

I thought that the rising water temps in the middle of the month would change the progression of insects and set the PMD’s off early, the Caddis to continue with straight, and the BWO’s to hold longer.

Results of the early predictions were mostly wrong. Again, wrong as an angler.

But I am certainly getting used to missing the mark and will continue to try to predict the future with Mother Nature dealing a difficult hand.

So we may be back on schedule with PMD’s beginning about the 2nd week of June and Caddis moving into our thoughts closer to the front end of June. Again, some guess work and some historical data. That is how the scientists work right? The historic emergence of the PMD is that we see the first PMD around the 5th, 6th, or 7th and then within 3, 4 or 5 days the game is on. Will that happen this year? Maybe.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 5.26.15
Watch this chart for hatch triggers

June is a fabulous month on the Missouri River. Will it be good this year? Yep. Will there be good dry fly fishing? Yep. Will there be a bundle of folks around? Yep. A very busy month here in Montana. All of t eh rivers will be fishing well as most of the westside rivers have experienced the run-off period. With the rains recently the rivers may be a touch off color and we will see some pressure from across the divide for those periods.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 5.26.15

The waters below the Dearborn are off color here locally on the Mighty Mo. When will that subside? A couple days. Currently running at levels near historical normal. The Dearborn is blown and the water a touch muddy for a few miles. Green yes. Un-fishable. No.

Little Prickly Pear is also spitting some mud, but not bad at all. Worm it up near the mud line? That is what the old timers would tell you. Does it work? Only you can be the judge of that legendary lesson.

Fishing. The fishing report is as follows.

The Upper River: Good to great. Some days better than others. Crowded? Yes, definitely. The lower reaches scare some folks with the mud and also many do not want to leave their comfort zone. Understood. The weekend had many floaters stuffed up top.

Nymphing is great with the standard Sow/Scud fly up top and the smaller something or other hanging below. Little Green Machines, small PT’s, Trigger Nymphs, Green Bellied PT’s, Purple LB’s, Pearl LB’s, Anato-Mays, Micro-May’s Gidget’s, S & M’s, Peep Show’s, Tunghead PT’s, Zebra’s, Rainbow Warrior’s, and may more mayfly nymphs of your choice. The BWO’s are still getting attention subsurface with the caddis and PMD’s not far behind.

Dry fly fishing up top is focussed on the March Brown and the BWO. Cripples and mergers are good. They will eat the dun too, but it better be presented well early in the drifting/casting session. Not every fish will fall for the good ‘ol Adams. But most do. Cluster midge, CDC Hanging Midge, Purple Craze/Haze, Nymen’s Cripple in both dark and light post config’s, Buzzballs, CDC Mayfly Emergers, any Harrop’s CDC patterns, Half Dun Hatching, Brook’s Sprout is killer, CDC Bubblebacks...come on in for additional info and flies that should, and might work this week on the Missouri River.

The Lower River: Below the Dearborn the game does change. More Caddis and PMD’s are evident. Yellow Sally’s should be on your mind too although they do not present themselves for some time, but remember that the nymphs are in the water column long before we see them flitting around our sunglasses.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 5.26.15
Is it on the fall yet? Maybe this week.

Nymphing is good. Fish all the stuff you like whether is be the sexy side or not. A ton of folks only fish the left side of the river, if you care. Find your groove and stay on it. Do not be afraid to lengthen or shorten your rig if you are not getting a good bite. No static patterns for those who get them more often than not. What worked yesterday, last week, or last year may not be the key to your success. Be aware of the changing conditions and change along with them.

Much of the same flies are in the mix but do not be afraid to toss some bigger generic patterns like the Prince, Purple Prince, Rubber Legs, Squirrel Nymph, Worm in many flavors, Czech Nymphs, FB’s, Bigger PT’s like int he 12 range, Yellow Sally nymphs, PMD nymphs for sure and many of your shaggy Caddis Nymphs. Translucent Pupa behind anything is good. Nitro Caddis, Grape Slushy, Bloom’s Weight flies in purple and gold, Silvey’s Pupa, and any of the flies listed above as well. Soft hackles may be a good bet dangles off of the nymph too. Be more creative on the lower and you can be rewarded.

Dry Fly fishing on the lower is good too. Weather dependent and pray like hell that the North Wind does not blow. that puts those sneaky sippers right off of the surface sinking them to the easy nymph prey lanes.

Dry-Dropper is a good bet. Solo dry is also good. Blind dry? All of this is up to you the angler. Lots of ways to achieve Mo River greatness. Caddis flies are a good choice with Mathew’s X-Caddis being a great one. You can fool the trout early in the season with this e flies that float well. Troth Caddis, Goddard’s and those fluffy jobbies that we love so much. Then when that time frame passes us by you gotta toss these film flies like the Stocking Wing, Trans Pupa, Buzzball, Missouri River Special, Bloom’s Ant, Half Chicken and others.

March Browns are fading and while they can produce action, the action is slowing. Get on there Baetis bus for good afternoon action. Film flies here to are a good bet. Crips and spinners and mergers are our game here in central Montana. If you have been fishing here for years or reading this blog for years, you should know what I am talking about. Any CDC fly is a good guess.

Missouri River Montana Holiday Fishing Report 5.23.15

Missouri River Montana Holiday Fishing Report 5.23.15

While it has been kinda hit and miss today seems to be fishing quite well.

Reports in at lunch from the gang fishing WC to below Craig somewheres validate that the weather pattern has settled in and the fish are responding.

The hatch activity due to the sunny weather in the previous 3 days has keep the top water bite to a level below average. Unless you are a headhunter and are on the search…then you may find a few more than the average bear.

Today? Today and the remainder of the weekend will present overcast skies alone with positive hatch cycles.

Lots of fun folks in our region as a bachelor party, a few long time Headhunters fishing groups, and maybe you will round out the gang here for the holiday long weekend.

Missouri River Montana Holiday Fishing Report 5.23.15

Nymphing Report: Good to great today. This last week hit and miss. Tomorrow? Who knows. But as I eluded to above the weather pattern is falling into this, this drizzly overcast deal. Way better than the winds from the north and high bright sun.

Fish will congregate in skinnier waters as they feel more comfortable with the weather, the lack of predators from above, and the bug population moves into the secondary feeding lanes.

Deep has been the key but with the rain, look for the behavior above to come on strong.

Boats are dribbling in to the shop this afternoon as I write the second part of the fishing report for  the holiday weekend and the reports as as strong as they were at noon time. A few HH boats were on the lower reaches and tell tales of hard rain, a good bite, but the dry flies were drowned  or being sunken at the time of torrential rain departures from the river.

Good thing that Izaak’s and Joe’s Bar are open daily for the drenched indi’s needing to warm their bones.

March Brown nymphs, PMD nymphs, caddis nymphs, and the FB stuff still working fine. Rainbow Czech nymphs along with a Little Green Machine will still get the job done. Want to branch out and try some other mayfly nymph patterns? We got ’em here at Headhunters. The most expansive and creative fly bins in the canyon. Bar None. Ninch will show you some flies you have only dreamed about. The nice thing with new patterns coming out and being fished guinea pig is that the fish have not seen it all. New flavors of flies do not always work…or do they?

Flies- Size 14 Pheasant Tail, Tungsten Split Case PMD, Tungsten Redemption, BH Poxy Back PMD’s, Tungsten Reckoner, Electric Caddis, Grape Slushie, Blooms Tungstens Dark, and Little Green Machines.

Dry Fly Report: Good if you dig that sort of thing. Epic? No, not really. Maybe tomorrow and the following day Monday. Maybe next week will bring back the daily dry fly bite?

March Browns still in the house as we move deeper to the latter parts of May. Later than normal? No. The water temps dictate the entire hatch cycle. And angle of sun, and water temps, and angle of sun…etc. So as we see the stabilizing of the temps we see a longer BWO and MB hatch cycle. The water temps have slowed the progress of our spring caddis but we can keep that on the back burner for another few days. It will return, they certainly will.

Remember that the dry flies do not need to be seen for the subsurface stages including the larval and pupal to be effective.

Conversation with a feller at the bar…Feller: “Huh? I did not see any PMD’s today. How did you know to fish the nymph? Me: Well, they gotta be under the surface moving about before they emerge into our atmosphere. If the hatch begins in a couple weeks, don’t you think that they are partying in their watery environs? Feller: Huh? Guess I never thought of that.

John Arnold reminds me of his favorite time to fish the Caddis Pupa. It is now, before the main hatch starts. He stated that he loves fishing the pupa in May. The best time to fish it really.

Back to the Dry Fly Report in progress: The regular spots, the usual suspects for the dry fly lanes are producing. The subtle soft spots are even more intriguing. Look hard at likely locals and ye shall find a few. Watch and learn. Understand the feeding pattern and make a few practice drifts before setting out after the trout prey. Those who approach quietly and drift with purpose, not hope like some, usually fare better.

March Brown cripples, BWO Spinners, Buzzballs, Harrops CDC Emergers, Purple Craze, Cluster Midge, Stockingwing Caddis, Outrigger Caddis, Dancing Caddis

Streamer Report: Sink tips are back in style. Th higher water levels and off color water have made it a better game than the past few days. Overcast and muddy. A story made for your streamer chucking successes. Those who get after it and strip until their arms are tired and sore have good catch reports.

Here again the normal flash will kill it. With the Black Bugger, Krafts Kreelex, Clouser Minnow, Rabbit Zonkers, Skittish Smolt, Coffeys Sparkle Minnow, Dolly Lama

Missouri River Flow Predictions…

Who really knows other than Mother Nature. But, but the inflows are stronger with the recent rainfalls around the state including our massive drainage. Will they affect the summer flows? Maybe. A long shot really. The Canyon Ferry reservoir is up to 87.2% Creeping upwards. Need 10% ion the next month. Boy, it could really happen. Then we may expect mid summer flows to be closer to the 4K mark than the mid 3K predictions. We of course will keep you abreast of the water situation here on the Headhunters Info Super Site.

Inflows at Toston below. You can see the orange or red triangle for the median daily flows and you can also see we are below that historical quotient.

USGS.06054500.06.00060..20150516.20150523.log.0.p50
Inflows at Toston. USGS Toston Missouri River

Remember that the flows mimicked this in the early, mid, into the latter part of the last decade. We made it through then, we will again. I’m rooting for Mother Nature to guide us along.

How about this weekend with the recent deluge of rain in Craig? Little Prickly Pear currently 123cfs but she will jump back upwards as will the Dearborn with this spit today. Dearborn is muddy this afternoon with flows currently at 675cfs and climbing again. Check us out for the up to the minute Dearborn flows and coloration. We do guide the Dearborn River if you are so inclined. Call us @ 406-235-3447 for additional info and inquiries about guided trips on this small stream jewel in our back yard.

May is one off our favorite months. Most of the shop staff love this month. Fewer folks, great overall fishing, some real good dry fly action along with streamer action as a side note…

Fly Shop open daily from 7am-8pm. Shuttles, flies, killer logo wear, SIMMS, SAGE, RIO, Abel, Nautilus, and much much more!

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 5.18.15

Thew weather went into a shitty wet and cold yet normal May pattern this last week. Will it remain the same this coming week? Only Mother Nature knows.

The weatherman has some insights too…maybe.

We saw the value of kick ass rain gear this last week though. Gore-Tex does the best job. Period. SIMMS gear heads did stay dry. SIMMS was here BBQ’ing along with Montana Fly Co and we thank them for their participation the Caddis Festival and Drift Boat Drive-In.

How much did it rain here in Craig? Rainfall for the previous 3 days at the Dearborn measured 2.66 inches. In Wolf Creek the measurement was 1.7 inches. Look at the results here. Did it affect the current situation and future situation of summer flows? Maybe. Maybe not.

While May and June are the 2 wettest months in Montana where upon we receive over half of our yearly precipitation, it generally does not affect the summer flow outcomes. Does it hurt? No, we like it. It greens up the joint too.

Will it fill the reservoir faster, or get us to the magic 97% fill goal? No, I do not think so. But it will add a bit of water for our summer ahead. We are currently at the 84%+ level. Need `13% to get to the last week in June fill goal.

Check out the inflows at Toston below. Will this help? Oh yeah. But the same statement is valid here too. Probably too little too late. But if the rain continues to fall from the sky, it could alter the path a bit.

USGS.06054500.06.00060..20150511.20150518.log.0.p50
On the Rise at Toston

The Dearborn looks like it has topped out at 695 cfs, up from below 200 cfs before the rain storm and the Pear is at 209 cfs up from about 50 cfs.

Are the feeder creeks blowing mud into the main stem of the Missouri? Yep. Pretty muddy and off color on Sunday. What will today bring? Some settling will occur but it may take a few days. Get out your dirt snake box and have at ‘er.

Check with the shop on our Missouri River Hotline 877-DRY-FLYS. We got your back and give us a shout for any river questions or stop in for a shuttle on your way out.

The water temps have dropped right out of the 50’s and will remain that way for a few days until the sun shines yet again. Current water temps at 48F and water flows at 4400 cfs. They have risen as well and if you add LPP and the Dearborn add another grand onto that figure.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 5.18.15

It is the date that Mount St. Helens blew in 1980. If you are interested in history, and for our Washington readers.

Here in Craig all is well. Nymphing very good to great. Keeping your hands warm enough to grasp the rod int eh north winds has been tough, but good fishing always keeps you warmer. All of the regular spring players will work. The slender bodied mayfly stuff will work for 3 mayfly species this week.

March Browns, BWO’s and PMD nymphs are on the menu. Close what you like and try it. If that don’t work, change it up. And keep in mind that before we see more Caddis on the surface they are in the mix subsurface. Just like the PMD mention above you need to remember that the life cycle previous to the adult stage we and you and most love so dearly begins under the surface a year before we see the dun..

Pay attention to depths and be willing to adjust accordingly. Those who practice static fishing behaviors…are happy with the results I guess, or they would change. Remember that bugs move into secondary shelf lanes when moving towards the surface. Smart fish follow that model. So do smart anglers.

Dry fly fishing? Good. Search and Ye shall find. Ask the Ninch, or Sara, or Braden, or Dewey, or who ever you may be standing next to and we can outline a reach that will fit your needs.

Again two of the Mayfly Brothers will get you some takes. MB’s and BWO’s are the hero’s in this story. Caddis are on the back burner until warmer temps return.

Streamer anglers love the shitty weather. Chuck and duck. Strip and set. Most of us love May for the bigger fish on the bigger fly. Small and boring streamer patterns have been getting it done. Remember it is all about the flash.

That is the latest from the river as we know it. Guides out daily, lodging in any one of our over 20 strong options, the best fly selection, the only SIMMS dealer on the river, Headhunters Logo Wear, shop open daily @ 7am.

Missouri River May Fishing Report 5.7.15

Two days beyond Cinco de Mayo. Moving towards Mothers Day.

Outfitter Stu Dominick of Renegade Outfitters above roping them on the Missouri River near Craig MT. We love Stu here @ Headhunters. A long time friend and outstanding Missouri River guide. He is the understudy for renowned Walleye Angler and Outfitter Dave McKee who also roams the states best waters in search of dinner. During the day they fish for trout. Mostly.

The river is just fishing great.

Lots of biters.

As I like to say, the Missouri River trout are in a positive feeding mode.

Tired of fishing reports that are too filled with goo and happiness? Yeah, me too. Below is the straight up sober reality version today on the Headhunters honest fishing report.

Missouri River May Fishing Report 5.7.15

The fishing is heating up daily. It seems to get a little better everyday. Other hi-lites include the opportunity to fish in whatever discipline you desire. Or all in the same day. Or just tie on a night-crawler and drift fish the live worm. That shit works.

Dry fly anglers are getting it done both blind and sight fishing. What would I choose on this deal? A big giant film type caddis pattern or a sz 8 H & L Variant. But that is only what I would do.

WWZD?

Foamie.

Members of the DFO Army like bigger Adams, March Brown crips and spinners. The guys getting them make the first cast well. The rest of those seventh drift casters? Not as many to hand. Remember that you can make a number of casts short of the fish before you make the one that he eats. Meaning? Don’t screw the dog til later in the casting game. Perfect presentations catch the most fish.

The fish are not pressured yet so those anglers who are spot on get all of the fish to eat the fly. A rare and fickle time on any resource when the best anglers knock the living shit out of ’em.

So, if you are that type of angler…the time is now. If you want to be that kind of angler you may need to practice casting in the lawn a few more times before ascending that fish ladder. Or sacrifice yourself, your wife, and your children to live the almost lost art of the tenured trout bum.

I like the guy that just smiles when you ask if his fishing was any good. That humble 29 yr old drinking a Grouse Rocks is the feller who doesn’t need to tell you about how many fish he landed. He frankly doesn’t know what the number of trout he landed is, or was. He only knows that his game plan will adjust tomorrow to accommodate what he has gleaned from today.

I would venture that his success rate higher than most…

Dynamic anglers do well on techy tailwaters. Those willing to understand and adapt on the fly learn the Missouri at a rabbits pace. The rest? They resemble the other competitor in this age old Fable.

The Hare wins this race on the Mo. The Tortoise? No, not today.

Aesop would be wrong in this fishing fable.

Missouri River May Fishing Report 5.7.15

Those tossing the Dry-Dropper are having success. Try a March Brown soft hackle off the bend.

Nymphers? Rocking it daily. Short, medium, or long seem to be all working well. From the dam northwards have at ’em. Choose you water and fish it well. If you depth is not producing you can always change. The other day I made 4 water level/depth changes before I got into the trouts. Could it have been the time of the day with the morning session fishing slower,t he fish not being on the bite? Yeah, probably. But those who stop trying must not be into getting the trout to bite the hook. And I get that. There is more to the day than getting the net totally soaked. Enjoying the birds, the bugs, the rise-forms, the Pastrami Sando in your lunch box…all important facets of any fishing day.

Change is an important constant in successful fly fishing.

Streamer anglers are enjoying the change in weather and are also enjoying the lower water that is revealing the Missouri River bottom structure that is so damn important to understand to be a rock-star class streamer junkie. 7wt. is selling subsurface Mo River topo maps online here.

The flows for the summer are shown below in this graph with the probable flows being represented in red. Looks like mid 3K’s for the meat of the summer. Good dry fly flows. Good angler flows. Good fish flows? No. Fish like more water, more O2, more room, more insulation, just more water period.  We would not be offended if the flows were higher. Can we change this number? I guess not. But we will try to wish it higher.

Will the river temps climb? Yep. The weeds? Yep. Most likely all of the lower water issues will make themselves present this summer.

Including the occasional altercation between anglers. Just be smart and open your eyes to others around you. Swallow your tongue and let it roll off. Don’t catch the ball. You can just let the whole incident just bounce on by.

What can you do about it? Good question reader. What you can do about it is act like a stellar human being treating others with the same respect that you yourself deserve. Lead by example. Fish with purpose and understanding that you are sharing a resource with other anglers. You are not alone and cannot act like an idiot angler or one of those asshole anglers. Act like you are being watched by your son or daughter. Act like the stellar human being that you are.

It’s in you. It’s in all of us.

We are running headlong into summer at a quicker pace than we normally do here in central Montana. Thinking out loud about the fun, the fellowship, and the lower than normal flows. Let’s all be on our best behavior and enjoy the Missouri River and all she has to present us.

The fishing is great. It will get better everyday until July 5th. Hold on. Here we go…

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 5.3.15

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]All is good on the Missouri River near Craig Montana. Up and down the river all of your favorite stretches are fishing well.

The wind has been haunting us for the week behind us and let us hope that it is not as prevalent as we move forward into May.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 5.3.15

Things to look for this month.

  • March Browns. They are here. From Craig on downwards. The trout love the dry. They are fond of the nymph too. Try a T-Head PT or any March Brown Nymph you like and a Para March Brown. We got Crips, Emergers, and Duns in stock today.
  • Baetis. The best hatch this month. Should go another couple weeks. Look for better fishing on overcast and inclement days. Pray for them. While we like the sun we also like rising fish.
  • The arrival of Caddis. Yep, this is the traditional month for the Mothers Day Caddis. Around Mothers Day? Probably.
  • The Drift Boat Drive-In Montana Fishing Film Festival @ Headhunters Fly Shop Friday Nite May 15th. Be there! The normal swag, fun, food, and beer type of party. The fun you have come to associate HH and the Missouri River with.
  • Craig Caddis Festival and BBQ Cook-Off Saturday May 16th. A big event for the entire family. The fishing is good too. See you after the day for food, music, fun, and cool stuff to buy in our live and silent auctions!
  • Slower traffic than April. May is a kick ass month for blind fishing mayflies and eighth fishing them too. Most of the HH staffers just love this month. For some it is their favorite. Yours too? It may be…ha!
  • Slower traffic than June as well. June the cork comes off. If you like to fish without as many anglers around you, then May is your time.
  • Lodging availability. Good times here @ www.craiglodging.com.

Food for thought as we get into the real season here on the Mo. Remember to be polite on the river. Have seen some real bullshit moves from boat traffic as of late. Boats running over wade fishers areas. I see boats not giving the wade angler enough room. Remember that those fellas have walked in and do not have the liberty to move like the boat does. So…give those guys some room fellas. Be polite. Don’t practice asshole boat maneuvers.

Headhunters has full stuffed bins of flies. And the ones you need the most. And the most popular patterns too. Lots of them. Some shops do not order enough flies for the season. Ninch does not like to run out. 7wt. told Ninch that is the key to fly shop success. Information, education, customer service, entertainment…and tons of flies. Ninch abides.

We’ll certainly have an impromptu BBQ later in the month, After the Caddis Fest Weekend. We will have some food on the Drift Boat Drive-In Night too. Maybe Smores?

Check out the Headhunters Logo wear that we have in stock. Over 50 logo’d hats to choose from and manufacturers hats from SAGE, RIO, Simms, Howler Bros, YETI, and mach more!

Headhunters Fly Shop keeps the longest hours on the river too. We are open at 7am and open late til 8pm. The hours will expand as the season moves into full summer swing. Your late nite shopping shop. Late shuttles too. Want to fish after 5pm? No worries. we got your back.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 4.29.15

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Pretty much rules this late part of the month. The fishing part. Pretty much rules.

Does it get better? Oh yeah. Much better. I think this time of year it gets a touch better every day until the epic Jul5th. Then it gets worse every day, meaning harder, until October. Then better for about 6 weeks. Then it’s winter and we get the two handed sticks out again.

Back to today’s fishing report.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 4.29.15

You can get the trout to bite your fly with many differing techniques as I mentioned in the last fishing report. I put up a picture of a …No I believe I mentioned several various ways to achieve angling success.

Dry-Dropper can get them in the am and when the bugs are going nuclear. Droppers of choice this week include the TwoBit Hooker, Pearl LB, Tungsten PT, Frenchie, LGM, Zebra, S & M, Disco Midge, RS2…

Dry fly fishing is good when you get in ’em. Find them in the normal Mo rising fish spots. Some rising in A-Typical locales as well. Smaller BWO dries with the emerger paying a role too. Spinner? Never go out on the Missouri River w/o the right type of cripple fly.

Q: What is the right type of cripple for fishing the Mo?

A: The one you can see.

Here at Headhunters we have posts of many colors and shades. Flies we have tied specifically for you the customer. Ninch, AKA 7wt., is perpetually scheming on how to get the best flies in our customers hands, rods, attached to the tippet and consequently to the trout. A dark post can certainly spice up your Baetis afternoon. Don’t go without!

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 4.29.15
Dropper flies for the Missouri River.

Nymphing is very good. We can still bump into slower periods or the morning will fish better than the afternoon…but that is just fishing. Be prepared to change you game if you need to, Follow the bugs throughout the water column. If they move, you betta move as well or face the bobber going quiet. Nobody likes a Silent Bob(ber).

Deep nymph rigs are still getting the job done most of the time. Go short when needed. Find fish any place you like at this point. The water temps are conducive to riffles, runs, drops, pools, eddy’s all fishing well. Find you lane and follow it down the lazy river.

Streamer fishing? Decent enough. Not as many playing that game as the dry fly and nymph anglers.

Awful nice this week with the weather as the daytime highs are in the 60’s all week long. Wind should be a player too. How about you. Are you a player?

See us at the shop daily 7am til 8pm. Open later than anyone on the Mo for all of your late night fly fishing needs here on Montana’s Missouri River. Shuttles late too. Thanks for making us your goto Missouri River info, education, customer service, and entertainment fly shop here in Craig.

Headhunters Baetis Week. Dry Fly Love.

Headhunters Baetis Week. Dry Fly Love.

Boy do we love Baetis here in central Montana fishing the Missouri River. It is the real beginning of the spring dry fly game.

While the Midge kick it off, the Baetis bring in the dry fly year adding validity to the daily dry fly game. Do they come every day? Mostly. So do the Midge. So we begin to expect dry fly opportunities excellence on a daily basis.

In the shop there are daily questions about the flies we like to fool those sometimes finicky feeding trout.

We like the emergers and flies that sit in the film. Film flies rule. Baetis are all about hanging in the meniscus. So therefor those are the type of flies that our fly guru Ninch fills our overstuffed always stocked fly bins.

DSC_0072
Ken outta Seattle WA fishing the Baetis Dry this last weekend w/ HH Guide Mark Raisler

Duns are cool too. Who doesn’t like the adult. Cripples are what John, Jared, and Ben Hardy like. Spinners can come in handy too. John is also a fan of the BWO Spinner. Mark likes the Buzzball on everything else. But for BWO’s he fishes the CDC emerges most. Sara digs the small attractor type Baetis like the Purple Haze, Craze families which we do not even have listed. Those are a different category for us, but many like to throw the generics out there and our fish do seem to agree on one thing. Braden likes the bright dun stuff. Max is into the Spinner too.

It’s all about the presentation. And the right fly helps.

So what do we suggest? Any fly you dig. We all have our favorites and go-to patterns. What are yours? If you need a hint do not be afraid to swing by the fly shop. If you want to buy one of everything…two of everything…an even dozen? Why not. Be prepared. Fish well stocked.

Headhunters Baetis Week. Dry Fly Love.
Nearly 40 dry fly BWO patterns at Headhunters Fly Shop

We have not included the Para Adams in several post colors we carry, the Craze patterns, the emergent purple flavored filmy’s. That has to bring up the total closer to 60 patterns. Tired of fishing the same old patterns. Try something new this year, this week, on your favorite BWO reach.

Here are the flies as pictured above in some sort of order. Mostly in order as follows…

  • Top Row 1: Low Water Baetis, Hogan’s Sipper BWO, Harrop’s Short Wing BWO, RS2 BWO, Harrop’s Captive Dun, Harrop’s Captive Dun BWO, Brook’s Sprout BWO, RS2 Grey
  • Row 2: Harrop’s CDC Biot Emerger, Loop Wing Emerger Grey BWO, Indicator Parachute BWO, Para Cripple BWO, Swisha’s Clumpa, Quigley’s Half Dun Hatching BWO, Thor Cripple, Snowshoe Dun BWO
  • Row 3: Cripple Parachute BWO, Baetis Cripple, Harrop’s D & D Cripple Baetis, Harrop’s Last Chance Cripple, Sparkle Dun, Sparkle Dun Olive, Quigley’s Sparkle Flag BWO, Silverman’s Stacker Cripple, Nyman’s DOA Cripple
  • Row 4: Hi-Viz Para BWO, CDC Wing Para Spinner BWO, Harrop’s Hi-Vis CDC Spinner BWO, Harrop’s CDC Paraspinner Baetis, Silverman’s Stacker Spinner Olive, Passage’s Magic Fly BWO, Nyman’s Black Posted DOA Cripple, CDC Winged BOW Emerger, CDC Winged Emerger Grey

Headhunters Fly Shop Missouri River Friday Fishing Report

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 4.14.15

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]We have folks all the time want us to call them when the fishing is “off the charts.”

It isn’t yet.

Will it be soon? Yeah, maybe.

Every April the cork comes off and we are looking for that to happen sometime this month. April and May are really, really good fishing months here in central Montana.

Really, really good.

Do they match July, June, or even October? You gotta be the judge of that.

April is drifting by faster than we realize and May will be upon us with some of the shop staff’s favorite fishing. Streamer mania and great blind dry fly fishing with March Browns, BWO’s and midges keeping us busy until the spring caddis show.

As for today, yesterday and the week ahead? Looking good my fishy friends.

Missouri River Montana Dry Fly Report
Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 4.14.15
Massive hatches of midges Missouri River Montana

Good dry fly days have been had with better and ultimately more consistent days ahead of us. The BWO’s are showing albeit not in huge numbers. Those Baetis boxes should grace your boat or vest for the next month for sure. Para’s, low riding emerges, trapped duns, transitional duns, cripples, and your own home brew patterns will get you through. Look for a Complete Baetis Blog coming soon.

Midges are here in force. Mega midge hatches all day long, on some occasions, will allow you to toss at rising fish when the wind falls below gale forces.

Midges are here in force.

Had to say it twice for effect. Big time midge hatches. Some years we have consistent daily emergences and some years we do not. This is one of the good ones. Midges can get you all revved up from dawn til dusk here on the Missouri River.

Patterns? Clusters, Buzzaballs, singles, G-Men. You have been reading this report for weeks now. All the regular stuff…plus your magic fly. We don’t keep any secrets here at Headhunters. Want to know the secret fly, the secret mayfly for the Missouri River? It’s commonly known as the Parachute Adams.

Missouri River Montana Nymph Report

Good to great. Getting better everyday. Fish moving into faster water as the temps rise and we can really see it. The water is dropping and be aware to adjust your nymph rigs accordingly. The dynamics of nymphing are constantly in flux and those who practice static fishing behaviors don’t use the net as often.

Look for center river water and get it on the shelf. Some are having success in those bank sided bubbly seams and runs. Others are staying closer to the center. Your choice. Lots of ways to skin cat.

Montana fly fishing Midges
Midges “Lined Up”

Patterns? Wide and varied. Still the primary objective is to sink that fly as fast as possible and keep it there as long as possible. That is the secret to nymphing success. Keeping the bait in front  of the target as long as physically possible. Honest. Trust me, I’m a fly fishing guide.

  • Gaudy beaded flies like the FB Ray, FB Caviar Scud, FB Pink Ray Soft Hackle, Hot Threaded Tailwater Sows, Ninch’s Lucent Bead Sow, Bloom’s FB Weight Fly, the Mexican Mayfly, Amex, Pink Lightening Bug, Holla Back Pink, Pierced Pink Nipple’s…
  • Mayfly patterns that are coming on strong include S & M’s, Peep Show, Indigo Child, Two Bit Hooker, Gidget, LGM, T-Head Pheasant Tail, BHGRHE, Brush Hog, Micro Mays, Red Headed Step Child, Pearl LB’s, un beaded PT’s, Ju-Ju Baetis…
  • Midge flies that sink include the ubiquitous Zebra. You could only throw that fly and do well. Food for thought. But if you havfta go a different route you’d have to come in and see what we have. I just fish the Zebra. Black Zebra. I will have to poll the gang at Headhunters and find out what all the hype is. I’ll get back to you.
Missouri River Montana Streamer Report

Streamer Fishing is getting better too. The water temps moving upwards gets those trout to move. To move towards that stripped fly. Bright fly bright day. Dark fly dark day. Try that.

The swinging gang is still out there. They are having success in a touch faster water as well. It need not be the stale part of the run anymore. Try stepping through the top ends of some of these runs. A fly with some weight will help in that arena as well.

Need Spey Lines or MOW Tips? We got it all on our on-line fly shop. If not, we will order it today!

Water Temps and Missouri River Flows

The water temps are climbing. Shocker! We would like them to climb slowly. But, we cannot control that sort of deal. Not yet at least. The better fishing is commensurate with the higher water temps. Shocker!

Currently roaming around the 44F mark. Should stall there for a while as we flirt with spring like weather for a couple days. Probably more BWO weather. Shucks.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 4.14.15
Wobbling around in the 44 range

The flows are in the 3860cfs ballpark and will stay no higher than that for a while. Check out the probable flows chart we will post tomorrow. Low man. May be a low water summer. Honest.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 4.10.15

While we will be out swinging on the Hemingway Flat for the entire weekend with Whitney Gould and Mike McCune the rest of you will be enjoying the river as she shakes the winter sleep out from her eyes.

Yes, the Missouri River is acting like a spring time fishery.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 4.10.15

For those who are nymphing this weekend you should be aware that the fish have moved into the faster realm and are spreading out from their cold slow water haunts. There are still some fish living in that type of water but the wild ones have gone awry and are in some riffle type water. Summer time water? No. Not in seam lines, stuffed like a potato, no not really. But diamond chop in the deeper lanes will get some action for that new  SAGE Method your wife just gave you.

Flies? All the BWO stuff, all the pink stuff, all the firebead stuff, and all of the midge stuff. Why not tie on a big rubber legs in the middle region, a tiny CDC Bubbleback BWO in the lower and a Zebra on the upper. Top fly your choice.

Dry fly guys? Use the BWO patterns to your advantage. Clusters will work too. Find a tough one? Single midge patterns or downwing BWO  or Cripples will do the job.

Are the BWO’s really here? Have they truly arrived? No, not really. But they are willing to flirt with us on any given day from here on out through the middle of May.

Streamer fanatics are using the regular standard Missouri River fare. Flashy, small, black. Your choice. Swingers? They are in the shop upgrading their personal 2 handed line selection. We have all the tips you need too! Your 2 handed and Trout Spey Source in all of Montana is right here in Craig. Call us up if you need anything or have any questions. We have the knowledgeable staff on hand to answer your toughest of line questions.

The weather for the weekend is variable. Nice today, odd Saturday, and a touch of wind for Sunday. You gotta go so why not this weekend. $300 Guide Trips on our Spring Special continue through the end of the month.

Missouri River Montana flows are at 3900cfs and the water temps are north of 43F. She is turning on! Be polite to other anglers out there as the water level decreases the river shrinks. Be polite and do unto others as you…

Lodging available for those last minute planners. Call the shop for any of your Missouri River needs. We are open daily @ 8am and open late for those enjoying dinner at Izaak’s. Izaak’s open @ 3pm and serving a mean Jalapeno Pineapple Margarita along with great Brisket!

See you here in downtown Craig and on the river this weekend!

Headhunters Fly Shop and Guide Service Missouri River Fly Fishing Report 4.6.15

Fishing is pretty good for the spring.

Ninch says same as always…”good as you are.”

I think he is sort of right. You gotta have the right gear and toss it in the right water. That ups the odds of getting the net off the floor.

Streamer fishermen are either happy or sad. Mostly happy with good results coming from tossing these big flies at the bank and across fishy shelf lines. Some RIO Outbound Short sales this weekend as more of the Streamer Junkies crawl from their winter hide-outs. Streamer Tips too with the shorter 10′ clear tip.

You could toss a dry line out there this next week as the flows are predicted to fall to levels below 4K. Water temps are hovering in the 43F range. Good for bug life.

Streamer patterns that are hot include White Dali Llama, White Urchin, Silver/Red Kronik, Sparkle Minnow OG, Tungsten Thin Mint, New Age Bugger Fire Tiger, Simi-Leech, Pine Squirrel Leech, Bloom’s MRS Bugger, L’il Kim, Arnold’s Stinger Sculpin Nat/Cop.

We have a ton of spring nymphs in stock for your Missouri River pleasures. Most of the action has been subsurface as we move into the second week of April. Split shot is still en vogue. Bobbers too. RIO Indicator Leaders are all the rage too. We love the RIO Indicator Leader 10′ 2X as our base leader. Then cut to length and add a touch of Fluorocarbon Tippet to complete your rig…oh, flies too.

Hot Springtime Missouri River nymph patterns include Bloom’s Weight Fly Rainbow, Amex, Sow Bug headless, Sow Bug Tungsten Bead, Ninch’s ThunderBug, Allen’s Holla-Back Girl, Fish Finder Worm, SJW’a of all kinds, LGM, Lightening Bug Copper Bead, Zebra Midge, Flashbang Midge Red, Sparkle Prince, 20 Bomb, Pat’s Rubber Leg, FB Tungsten Caviar Sow, Pink Wire Worm, Jemstoners Worms, Purple LB, Soft Hackles, Pink FB’s…

The dry fly bunch is out there looking for those sipping Missouri River Trout. Yes, finding them too. Fish found rising all hours of the day. Finicky non location feeding trout sometimes with no rhyme or reason to the pattern. The feeding pattern.

Fly Patterns that are good for the DFO crowd include Harrop’s Spent Midge, Buzzball, Cluster Midge, Q’s Cluster, Para Adams, Dominic’s Purple Reneball, Stacker Midge Royal, Purple Craze, sz 20 Royal Wulff, Black Parachute Ant, and big fluffies like Peanut Olive, Hodek’s Skwala, Super Chernobyl Purple, Henry’s Fork Golden Stone, Uni-Bomber, CFO Flamer Purple…

Overcast and calm and snow on the ground this am and the fishing looks great. Just a few on the water today…not too many days that that ahead of us for the remainder of the season. Get out if you can and enjoy the relative solitude of a Monday in April.

Shop open rail for all your river needs. Coffee, conversation, and information here at Headhunters.

Hot hatches on the horizon include our generally good spring baetis and the continuance of midge flies. Both will be gracing us with daily emergences this coming week. A few BWO’s out and about this last week. Meaning a few, like 3 seen recently. More to come soon. In conduction with the snow flurries panned for the week ahead? Maybe. You’ll just have to be here to witness it.

Bigger flies on the surface as well as our spring stones can be found under rocks too. Still a month out from the March Browns. Let’s play with the existing insects first.

Nymphers are out daily fishing all the way from the dam to ? How low can you go…

Streamer anglers stripping as well from top to bottom. Dry lines, intermediate tips, and some who like to go deeper yet. Hickman’s and Coffey’s and Kraft patterns are getting it done. Come by for the streamer super store in Craig. Open daily for your streamer fantasy at 8am.

While most are still nymphing anglers are branching out more and more everyday. Lots of anglers tossing the blind dry and just as many tossing the streamer fly. Both having success.

Nymphers are fishing secondary and tertiary shelf lines all times of the day. Some venturing into summer like water…with very little success. Those whoa re staying closer to the seasonal fishing norms are doing well. More consistent is the bite and in more kinds of water with more kinds of flies.

Yes, nymphing is expanding its window of possibility.

Streamer anglers are gaining strength as we move into water temps that are more conducive to trout movement and that makes this wily group smile. Sink tippers and dry liners are being seen bankside in every reach. Slwo and medium slow is the mantra.

Encourage the pause…

DFO’s are tossing any seasonal fly they desire. Big fluffy and flat low profiled and Adams like are the themes that we are sticking beside. Some good rising fish to midges here and there in that normal goofy spring midge like water. You know th type of whacky water I am commenting on if you are one of those great white midge hunters.

The dry fly bunch is coming out of their winter coma.

Water flows are holding at the 4K mark. Water temperatures are moving upwards above the 40F. level. As a Headhunters guest mentioned a couple days ago “Whoa, when it gets 42F it becomes magical.” There is some truth in that statement. The biggest part of that statement is that as the temps move higher the fish get feisty-er. The bugs do too.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 3.24.15

Go small and get the take. That is the word on the street as we move into the latter week of March.

Has madness ensued? Not quite but we are getting ripe.

Water temps still rising and the fishing is good enough to bring some of those rainbow colored trout to the surface. Clusters may not be the key as the better fish are now keying on the single midge. Size 20 and 22 midge patterns can get it done. Try the single posted mini Adams for a good trout midge bug. Don’t like that mayfly style fare? Go with a Poly Posted single midge, Matt’s Midge, Quig’s Midge, or anything small and midge like. Anglers choice.

Can’t see it? Trust your fishing partners eyes. Or just whack it when you think the trout is on it, near it, etc.

The streamer bite is decent as we move into the 38F water temp. Will it get warmer? Oh yeah man. Daily from here on out. Unless ‘Ol Man Winter re-appears.

The fly fishing information leaders in Craig

The nymphing? Getting better as the spring weather pattern takes hold. We should see an increase in consistency with less hit and miss feeding behaviors. The normal winter/spring fare can work on any given day. Just keep changing until the trout respond. Some days they are totally off of the Firebead patterns. Just sayin.’ Remember your winter/spring mantra. Slow water is a friend of the bobber bunch.

Flows are down and will remain so unless something with the snowpack changes…which is not in the long-term forecast. The water guessers state that it will remain at 4100cfs range as they are in the active storing of water stage. The normal fill date is the 3rd week of June with the Canyon Ferry Reservoir seeking a 97% fill value. We will keep you posted as the spring water situation comes into focus.

How about your Tuesday? We suggest working on the weekends and fishing during the week. Shop open daily for any of your Missouri River needs. The friendliest staff on the entire river and your information experts here in Craig. See you soon…

Missouri River March Streamer Patterns

Missouri River March Streamer Patterns w/ a side of Streamer Line discussion

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]March Streamer Fishing is?…which leads us to this article written by team members Dewey and Mark at Headhunters Fly Shop.

Missouri River March Streamer Patterns

With unseasonably warm weather this month the river is starting to get pressure. A popular lead in to the Missouri River fishing discussion sometimes starts with “Are they hitting streamers?” Yes is the answer. “Is the bite good?” Like Ninch says “Only as good as you are.”

That is sort of the truth according to Ninch. You can also go long periods with out any interest in your streamer pattern. Should you change? Only you can answer that question. It really is up to you.

How?

Fishing streamers can be accomplished floating, wading, or a combination of the two. Let’s start with wading. With the popularity of the two-handed rod increasing here in central Montana this method is an effective way to cover large water without wearing yourself out. With that being said it does not mean the same water cannot be fished with a single handed rod. It’s just a matter of how much back casting room you will have. And your preference too.

Where?

The fish seem to still be in the winter mode meaning they are grouped up and hanging in slow water. The sexy riffles and runs look good this time of year but generally hold less fish. The slow water at the tail-out is usually where the fish will hang. The same water we send people to nymph fish is the same type of water you may want to seek when tossing the streamer fly. Inside bends have also been good and don’t forget about the water that looks like whitefish water…it can be prime winter habitat for trout.

What Gear?

I like to fish water 3 to 6 feet in depth. Some anglers like shallower water and a few are more comfortable with the deep stuff. So what kind of line do you need to access those streamer loving trout? Floating lines will work in the slow not so deep water. Generally you get to the fish with a weighted streamer pattern. Lead eyes, coneheads, flies weighted with lead on the shank…all good ways to sink that tasty morsel into the trout zone..

You can also use any number of weighted streamer lines. The RIO Outbound Short has been on of long time favorites but there are a couple others that are great too. The Outbound Short F/I has a 15′ clear intermediate tip. Maybe the best all round Missouri River streamer fly fishing line. Easy loading with almost endless power is why this remains the top selling streamer line at Headhunters.

The RIO Outbound Short comes in a full intermediate version. Clear Tipped backed with a Transparent Yellow back end of the line. Gaining a cult following here in the shop and now bleeding into the hands and reels of some our our streamer junkie clients. Super shoot-a-bility will let you believe you are conducting business with a sniper rod!

Screen shot 2015-03-15 at 11.33.02 PM
RIO Outbound Short Streamer Line

The RIO Streamer Tip F/I is equally as good. A 10′ clear intermediate tip for lower water fall conditions here on the Mo. Lots of power for wind coupled with precise cast-a-bility that many like all year long!

RIO StreamerTip WF6F/S6 is an option for those who like to get a bit deeper. The 10′ blck tip sink rapidly with a floating back end. 6-7ips for those who like it deeper than the intermediate head can achieve.

The RIO Sink Tip rounds out our RIO Sink Tip Series with the 150 grain up to a 300 grain tip. 4-5ips sink rate on this 24ft sink tip.

Having some streamer fans inquiring about the Airflo Kelly Galloup Streamer Max Long fly line. We got ’em in stock for your streamer dreams! A fly line built for those who like to get the flies deep! This heavily weighted Airflo streamer line is for tossing those over-sized articulated streamers that Galloup disciples thrive on. If you fall into this category then you must have this adorning your streamer stick.

Kelly Galloup Streamer Max Long Fly Line
Kelly Galloup Streamer Max Long Fly Line available at Headhunters

You can add any number of tips to the end of your dry fly line too. Do they work as well? No. No but they can gt you into a few fish in a pinch. VersiTips from RIO and weighted Polyleaders from Airflo are available at the shop. That is a topic for another blog. Later.

What Technique?

Dewey says: The fish are not too aggressive on the bite. Meaning that they may not be jumping on the fly, not the hard grabs often. I like to cast 3/4 down stream and let the fly swing to the hang down, directly below me. Most of my takes have been on the hang down. I have had success with a slight twitch at the hang down. Wade fishing is a great way to enjoy the day chucking streamer patterns to Missouri River Trout. You get into a rhythm that is calming. Until the jolt of electricity when the fish decides to whack it!

I have been throwing the two handed rod a bunch this winter. It is my preferred way to winter fish streamers. Why? It is newer to me and is certainly easier on my body. Plus it is so damn efficient replacing the incessant single handed casting with time in the water. Why not have your fly in the water more often. Seems to make logical trout sense!

Float fishing is a different game. The single handed rod still rules here. No application for the two handed rod unless you like to endanger those around you. Hooking the rower is still not a great path to take. The fish are holding in the same type of slow water. The slow water can be found in the traditional streamer water behind rocks, skinny water near islands and bends, or slow runs in the middle of the river.

Now is when the “only as good as you are” part comes in. It’s still early for the “get it in there and fast strip” type of streamer fishing. We find get it in there twitch and pause to be more effective. This is when matching fly weight to line type becomes important. If the outfit sinks to fast to avoid hanging up you will be stripping to fast. Keep the everything balanced for pause and twitch. If you can entice the strike by teasing the often suspect rainbow trout into that fateful aggressive open thy mouth reaction then you will catch more trout. If you can’t? Well, casting practice on the water is sometimes an excuse we use at the bar upon coming up blank!

I cast my single handed rod while floating down the river and switch to my double handed rod when wade fishing. Efficiency is important if you want to catch these sometimes bullish winter fish.

Missouri River March Streamer Patterns

Fly selection tends to be a little smaller than what we recommend a month from now. Size 6 or 8 is the norm with the occasional 4 or 10 thrown depending on pattern or water. Colors can very from day to day. I find if you have faith in your fly you oughtta/gotta fish it hard. Bring a cup full of winter or March streamer patterns to the water. The following patterns are a few we like to recommend for this time of year.

  • Hot Cone Wooly Bugger #6
  • Dali Lama Black/White #6
  • Bloom’s MRS Bugger #4
  • Bloom’s Bullhead Black/White #6
  • Olive Blossom #6
  • Sculpzilla Blackl/White #6
  • Kraft’s Kreelex Copper/Gold #6
  • Coffey’s Sparkle Jig Sculpin #1
  • Coffey’s Sparkle Minnow Brownie #6
  • Lil’ Kim Copper #4

Missouri River Monday Fishing Report

Missouri River Monday Fishing Report 3.16.15

Missouri River Monday Fishing Report from Headhunters Fly Shop in Craig Montana.

Ninch says: If you are not willing to change flies and concentrate in select areas you might have a skewed view of how the fishing is right now.

Dewey says: Look closely to see those heads popping up. You gotta stare for while sometimes or you may not see them.

Mark says: Manage your winter expectations. I like to set the bar low everyday therefore exceeding even my own expectations.

John says: Try taking off the split-shot in really slow waters. The flies will have enough time to sink. Also try taking the slack out of the line enabling quick strikes for winter nymphing success.

Braden says: Huh? It’s fishing well sometimes, other times not as well. Just be here during the former.

Sara says: Streamer anglers make the world go ’round. Throw it til your arm falls off.

Max says: Go small and natural. Skwalas may be coming soon?

Julie says: Toss your 2 handed rod for another month. That’s what I’m gonna do. Then DFO for me baby.

That is the word from the staff here at the shop.

Had some guided trips out this weekend. Had a great time, learned some new things about the river, and caught some fish. Oh, and fixed my cast too. That was the word from Ben Hardy’s guest who has moved here for work He is excited to be back near the Mo. Originally from Helena, just down the road.

The Spring Special is here for the next 6 weeks through the 30th of April. Cheap lodging starting at $125/night here in Craig and beyond. Call the shop for availability after checking out www.craiglodging.com.

Water temperatures are moving upwards as the days become longer. 37F this March 16th Monday afternoon.

Missouri River Monday Fishing Report
Rising!

Flows are holding at 4700cfs-ish. Water flows for the summer? Don’t know yet, but will have a better idea as the spring progresses. Snow on the ground at or about the middle of April is dictates long term summer flows.

Flies for the week? Midges could be the key to breaking the bobber winter curse. Bobber anglers the 2 best seem to be the Rainbow Czech and some sort of sow. Streamers? Kreelex is back. Sparkle Minnows too.

A touch dirty below the Dearborn as it moved from 200cfs yesterday to 381cfs as I write. Just be aware of changing water conditions starting now through the month of June. You can always call ahead to get the current wind, water, and shuttle services.

More an more people around as we move into the true spring period. Open daily @ 8am and late til 6pm.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 3.12.15

Not terrible. That is the long and short of it. Inconsistent is and has been the word.

If you are going through hell, keep going.

    -Winston Churchill

That is my analogy of the month. Lots of anglers confused as to what is happening out there on/in that hallowed Montana river. The answer is just this simple. Fish are not being caught in every kick ass winter run. It just is not that kind of winter fishing this year.

The key seems to be to keep on grinding. All day long. Ramp to ramp.

What does that mean? Well to us it means to keep on keeping’ on. Keep changing flies. Fool around with depth. Look for winter water. Break down this big river into small river recognizable components. Find that soft inside spot, even if it is only 10 yards long and half that in width. Look for those mini winter jewels and toss your flies in.

It means that the streamer anglers gotta keep on chucking, keep on ducking, keep on stripping, keep smiling. Same deal. Look away from the faster runs and seek out the shallower and quiet tailouts, inside lanes, and the road less travelled.

Dry fly fellas? Creep and look. Plan ahead. Pray for overcast skies. Be diligent in your approach. Don’t get into a hurry.

Fly fishermen are famous for never giving up. For pushing through. For conducting totally stupid and inane behaviors repeatedly. We advocate those personality intricacies. Insanity is part of this, fly fishing, lifestyle.

Bottom line is just this. Fish are not being caught in every winter run. Do not get stymied based on the first 4+ runs you fish. While they may have sucked, the next run may hold the Holy Grail. It just might. You gotta keep going. Keep drifting. Keep casting. Keep fishing.

Understand that and enjoy the entire day. Fish for the fun of it. For the challenge. For the fellowship. For the love of the outdoors. For you.

So when we see you in the local watering hole, Joe’s Bar on the north side of Craig, we understand your plight.

It can be hell out there. The Headhunters key to success?

If you are going through hell, keep going.

If you still need some egging on, some flies that may work, leaders, fly line cleaner, split shots, hot coffee, a warm body to chew the fat with, sunscreen, and Fly-Agra Headhunters open daily @ 8am.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 3.8.15

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report from Headhunters Fly Shop in Craig MT.

Warm weather brings the folks out and the fish up. Overcast skies help things too. Today? Sun is the forecast.

Some good reports for those out headhunting on Saturday. Enough midges to get s few fish looking up? How many? One is enough say most.

Flies that fellers were coming in at the end of the day and hoarding? Midge clusters primarily, but a few popped a single dry midge patterning as well. Reneballs, Buzzballs, Harrop’s Midge Cluster, Quigley’s Cluster, Royal Cluster, Matt’s Midge, Snowshoe Posted Midge and more.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 3.8.15
Curt Reynolds teaching the ins and out of 2 handed casting Saturday at Headhunters Fly Shop Free Casting Clinics

Those longer leaders are making their first real appearance too. RIO 12′, Harrop’s TroutHunter in longer lengths as well accompanied a few out the door on the way to the river this weekend. It’s time to update your gear from last fall. Dust it off, toss some out, and make sure you are ready for rising trout you may encounter.

As for the nymphers…good fishing in the right kind of water. Not so good in the wrong kind of water. Find the boring winter water. Which equals the good winter water.

Nymphs? All the good stuff. Pink, FireBeads, Sows, Scuds, Pink LB’s, Ninch’s Lucent Bead Sow, Worms, Caviar Scud, Zebra’s, Little Green Machine, S & M Brown, Two Bit Hooker, Indigo Child, Rainbow Czech’s, Amex, Newman’s Own Midge…

Streamer Bite. Not terrible. May not always be good, but there  are some streamer chuckers out there getting after it. Some good stories, some not so good stories. Slow is the key. The water temp dropped this last week back to the 35F mark. It will climb higher as we move into this spring like seasonable weather.

2Handers are out and swinging around the river. Top to bottom you can find great runs for exploring. Headhunters is your Trout Spey Store. Look us up if you have any questions you need answered in this sometimes confusing game.

Hi’s near and maybe above 60F this next week. Check out the weather report on the right sidebar.

Shop open daily at 8am and now open later as the weather permits. Some are coming out for an afternoon wade fish or an afternoon float.

March Missouri River Water Order

March Missouri River Water Order

March Missouri River Water Order has come down the pike from the water managers in Helena.

It will probably not be a terribly high water year. Just a guess really. The image above is June 2010 w/ Kelley Lasek on the boat ramp at Mid Canon. On it. That is the old road upriver of the ramp, looking towards the VIP Ramp.

I doubt we will witness that this year. I may have jinxed it?

March Missouri River Water Order

Looks like the general lack of snowpack has started to affect the outflows this spring. The managers, US Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation,  emailed today and stated that flows will be dropping to 4500cfs. Is that reason for alarm?

No not really.. But more common spring flows, the flows we like, are higher than predicted. Generally in a higher snow pack position the flows would be higher, or remain at the 5K mark for longer finally moving upwards to allow for an average run off period.

March Missouri River Water Order
Go Big Red!

Will we see low water this year? Maybe.

Mother Nature is the designer and she has yet to let us in on her entire plan.

The wettest months are ahead of us in April , May, and June.

Stephanie Micek of the BOR stated that the snow on the ground in mid April is really what dictates the spring run off period.

We are fortunate as many of you know that a non-fishing run off period is not what we are talking about. But we are talking about consistent flows above 4000cfs for the summer months. And what ever you desire for the spring and early summer flows are we can all agree that Missouri River water flows above 4K make the late summer and autumn period much nicer.

The projected flows for the summer ahead as you can see below. There really is nothing wrong with 10K for a couple weeks. My opinion here.

If I was a gambler I would bet a case of beer on summer flows being…?

Headhunters Fly Shop Fishing Report

Headhunters Fly Shop Fishing Report 2.21.15

Headhunters Fly Shop & Guide Service with this weekends fly fishing report.

Montana’s Missouri River is fishing well.

But, there could be some weather issues. Check the weather or call the shop for an up to the minute fishing report, or nasty weather report.

Loks like snow to me…

Bobber fishing is hit and miss. Sara said she fished three days this week and she fished the lower, the middle, and near the upper. Depends on the weather. The sunnier the better…who knows why. Maybe the sun penetration gets them moving. The bugs?

Dry Flies? Midges are the option. And a good one at that.

Looks like a good chance for snow flies too.

Midge clusters have been seen here and there. Find your perfect slack water arena for the midge mania and set on up.

We have a bundle of midge cluster and individual midge patterns for your Missouri River dry fly pleasures.

Flies like HArrop’s Hanging Midge, Buzzball, Trask’s Adult Chironomid, Brooks Sprout, GT Triple Double, Harrop’s CDC Cluster Midge, Quig’s Stacker Midge, HArrop’s CDC Spent Midge, Snow Shoe Midge, 2X Posted Cluster Midge, Griffith’s Gnat…and many more effective patterns for the Mo’!

Over 200 winter pink-ish fly patterns for the bobber lobbers. 40+ top water midge patterns. The largest streamer selection in the canyon. Bar-None!

Guide trips out weekly. Cabin rentals whenever you need starting at $125/night. Fly Shop open daily @ 8am.

Montana winter nymph patterns

Bobber Report 2.11.15

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Enough of the Spey, you say. What’s up with the “normal” winter fishing techniques? You know, bobbers and such.

Though we haven’t been talking about it that much, those who have been chasing the bobber this winter have had great fishing, and arguably the most consistent catching of the off-season. Nymphers usually hang up around Holter Dam, and this winter has been no exception. Through mid-January you didn’t have much choice as much of the lower river was iced up. After our recent “Chinook-zilla” event, however, you can now float the entire river.

Dam fishin is it’s usual self. Pink. Pink. Pink. Zebra. Sow Bug. You know the deal. And as usual it’s not really the fly, but where you put it. By where we mean how fast (current speed) and how deep (bobber to split-shot distance). Lately, the key to success has been the very slow stuff, and 4-8 feet depending on the run. I heard Ninch tell some guys today, “It’s hard to call a spot ‘too slow'”. I concur.

If you’ve read our blog over the years, you’ve heard preach the “lead with your bobber” technique. This involves limited and “light” upstream mends. Mend enough to slow your drift a bit, but not enough to throw that bobber back upstream. You need to keep the bobber in front, imperceptibly dragging your flies. This insures that you detect the lightest and quickest bites, and they will be light and quick.

Last weekend some anglers hit the Canyon as well, including Headhunters guide Peter Skidmore. All reported pretty good fishing, getting them on bait larger, longer and red patterns. There were also some good streamer reports (from the boat, not swinging). The Canyon and below doesn’t always fish that well in the winter, and it’s great to see it as an available option. I suspect the Dearborn thaw is helping. Those fish like a little dirty, nutrient filled water this time of year.

I think we’re on the verge of seeing some midges busting loose as well. We’ve seen some pretty good emergences lately, and hopefully we’ll see a late-winter like we did 2 and 3 years ago.

But back to the nymphs. Stick with the usual, and Ninch lined up his fav’s for me in the shop today. Some are winter standards (anything with a fire-bead) and others are a little newer. The smaller midge patterns can be critical to success from the Dam to Craig.

And speaking of bobbers, lots of folks are digging these Strike Foundry bobbers, which are a good style for “lead with the bobber” fishing. I kind of like the inherent weight in these. They don’t fly all over the place, and detect light takes very well.[/vc_column_text][us_grid post_type=”ids” no_items_message=”” columns=”4″ items_layout=”shop_trendy” items_gap=”” ids=”9213″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 2.7.15

Cliff above on the water with long time friend and HH Guide Mark this last week. Today Peter is on the water with a a couple guests. This warm weather gets some folks in the guide boat and why not.

The weather continues to be the story.

Warm and quite windy on Friday and leading into today.

Today? Warm and windy, with some rain, maybe. If you are coming, call first if you are concerned about the weather.

Fishing? Good. Bring your big rod for the wind, or stiff, or what works best in sometimes difficult conditions.

Most are nymphing and finding success in soft inside bend type water. Split shot, bobber, and winter techniques will get you through the day.

Nymphs that rule: Pink LB, Ray Charles, FB Ray, FB Scud, FB Caviar, Depth Finder Worms, Purple LB’s, Little Green Machines, Zebra’s, red midges.

Some are tossing the streamer and stripping it. Try your luck with the big rod and see if some follow it? You gotta throw to know.

Streamers that are getting bit: Clousers have been all the rage. Black and blue buggers, olive buggers, Space Invaders, Skips’ Minnow, Skiddish, and the like. Brown Skiddish is on the way back along with the Kreelex.

Check out the Just Add Vise tying kits at the store for some of our favorite winter patterns. A perfect kit for tying 20+ flies with pattern and video included.

Missouri River Fishing Report

Water temps are creeping a bit higher during the warm spell. But with ice still on the lake, we won’t wee much improvement past the 36F mark. Water flows are @ the 4750cfs level. Normal.

Shop open daily @ 8am for all your trout fishing needs.

Hey Mister, got some info over here.

Midges on the water too. But don’t get your hopes up yet…sometimes they fake us out.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 2.4.15

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 2.4.15

Daily air temperatures are coming back out of the cellar. Although Tuesday we saw some flurries and temps back in the teens. Snow over the weekend cooled things off a bit, but it will comeback rapidly.

Temps in the 50’s again as the weekend approaches.

Headhunters events this week include our Fly Tying Night in America Wednesday@ 6pm at the shop. A casual affair with tying and fellowship. Our February Free Spey Casting Clinic is this Saturday the 7th. Sold Out again. Try getting in our our overflow back up list. We may entertain one more free clinic on March 8th. A Sunday. If you would like to get in on this call and get on the list. Clinics limited to 12 participants.

Kick Ass Winter nymphs include Rainbow Czech, Amex Czech, Ninch’s Pink Hot Head Sow, Pink LB, FB Pink Ray, FB Grey Ray, FB Caviar Scud, Choi’s Spicy Scud, Zebra, Red Zebra, Depthfinder Worm Pink, Red, Rose…some mayfly nymphs have been reported as usable like the Red Headed Step Child, Little Green Machine.

USGS.06066500.15.00010..20150126.20150202..0.

Some tougher fishing this last week with the fish not really all that energized until the afternoon. Could be the cold water temps. 35F is not all that comfy. Although it is up a bit.

Flows at 4900ish cfs. A common winter flow.

Swingers are out daily catching some fish up and down the river. Stop in for an up to the minute fishing report from one of the fishing staff at Headhunters. Ninch, Sara, Braden, Max, John, Mark, Dewey, and Julie. All fishing all the time.

The weather ahead looks good. Highs in the 50’s for the weekend. Some rain, no snow.

Cabins available for rent for a mere $125. Stay and fish in Craig this weekend.

Ninch & John’s Fishing Report

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Ninch and I decided to try a little lower river action the other day, what with the unseasonably warm and balmy, shirtsleeve weather. The ice that locked up the lower river for a month is long gone. The wind was almost non-existent, and Pelican is the closest ramp to both of our houses. Our plan was to swing streamers all day on two-handers, which is always our plan this time of year.

Here’s my favorite shot of the day. The big wide open of the lower river.[/vc_column_text][us_image image=”9472″ size=”full” link=”” onclick=”lightbox”][vc_column_text]The morning proved a little slower than we expected. While the air temps were plenty warm, the water may have still be on the cold side. We were also fishing some pretty quick water for this time of year. A few were nabbed regardless.

As they day progressed we really began to dial in the perfect depth and speed. Silty inside bends were very productive, as they hold the most midge pupa and nice easy currents for the trout to hang in. It usually takes us a little longer to figure it out when fishing “new” winter water. By “new” I mean that we know it well but not well in January. Sure, we know where they are from the Dam to Mid-Canon this time of year, but it’s more enjoyable to hit some new stuff and figure it out. Unless we get our hats handed to us…

Which did not happen this time. In fact, it was some of the best winter angling I’ve experienced on the lower river. In a couple of runs I watched Ben lean into fish 2 or 3 casts in a row. You never get them all when you’re swinging, but we got a good number of them, including some nice Browns.

Ninch spent the entire day swinging his Echo Glass two-hander, which is really turning out to be the perfect winter stick for the Missouri River. Ninch used the new RIO Scandi Versitip with floating, intermediate and type 5 tips. He caught most of his fish on the intermediate.

I fished my Sage METHOD 12’6″ #6, which has become my favorite Mo’ rod (and my favorite Steelhead rod). I stuck with the floater all day with a long leader and weighted fly. I probably should’ve switched to the intermediate – and more in some runs – but am just too lazy to stop fishing and change heads. A problem I’ve had for a long time.

Our best flies were the winter standards. Flashy baitfish. Ninch was throwing some kind of Kreelex variation of his own, and I was tossing the Mozuri Minnow. I am well aware that everyone wants to throw giant, fat-head, tandem (or more) Galloup-esque patterns. They have there place and time, but we find that over the course of a winter, the smaller Clouser style baitfish patterns far out-produce the bigger pushers. And when we have a big day, it’s always on the minnows. I tell people this all the time in the shop, but they don’t listen…

We were a little bummed when we started and realized it was going to be a good midge hatch. We had no single handers in the boat. We probably didn’t have any dries. Then a big ant fall came and we were really bummed. While I can’t say that I saw a whole lot of feeders, I did see a few. And we weren’t really fishing those kinds of spots. I suspect that there were some great dry fly opportunities around. Today may have been the day. Staying out until dark would have been the smart play if we were looking for heads. As it was, we were pretty much fished out around 3pm.

In the winter you can expect mostly Rainbow, and we had that. Cookie-cutter Missouri River fish mostly in that 16-17 inch range, but a few bigger. We were also rewarded with a half-dozen nice Browns. Very healthy and powerful. Jumpin’ all over the place. This makes me happy.

Here’s a few shots of a beautiful post Chinook winter day on the Missouri River.[/vc_column_text][us_grid type=”m” post_type=”attachment” items_quantity=”” images=”9474,9473,9471,9470,9469,9468,9478,9480,9467″ orderby=”post__in” items_gap=”” columns=”6″ items_layout=”gallery_default” img_size=”us_350_350_crop” overriding_link=”popup_post_image” breakpoint_1_cols=”6″ breakpoint_2_width=”768px” breakpoint_3_width=”480px” breakpoint_2_cols=”4″ breakpoint_3_cols=”2″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Headhunters Fly Shop Missouri River Fishing Report 1.29.15

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]We have been enjoying the weather. Lots of anglers have sen too. IT may change in the near future. Not too extreme though as we move into the Super Bowl weekend.

Snow, or chance of snow, predicted for the weekend with highs in the mid 30’s. Seasonable temperatures return again this week. Anglers will come again this weekend.

Wednesday it fished well. Tuesday too. Guides out this week as the regional anglers get itchy.

Flies? The normal. One day the FB works well, then the next the Rainbow Czech no orange bead. Change until the fish respond. Split shot and a 6′ depth will suffice.

The water level is near 5K and that seems just fine. The temps are cool still but the fish while cold are eating well. Water temps have crawled up to 34.5F. Ohh, soo cold.

Monday Morning Fishing Report 1.26.15

All kinds of people around this weekend fishing Montana’s Missouri River. A bunch of anglers.

Why? The warm weather. Temps in the mid 50’s kept most interested all day long. Saturday the wind let down and remained dead calm most of the day. Remarkable. Windy in the am, then perfectly dead calm and overcast the rest of the day.

Sunday. A touch breezier! 59.6F is what the mercury topped on Sunday. Still warm out there! Water off color below Prickly Pear Creek. For miles. Check it out before putting in @ WC or Craig. It settles below the Dearborn River? GO figure. Dearborn frozen still. LPP running brown.

Today Monday. Nice and quiet, winter style. The phone is still ringing with 2015 summer guide and lodging bookings.

Looks like nice weather all week ling and into this coming weekend. See here in Craig daily if you are coming fishing or traveling through. We would love to chat about the winter bite.

Flies? Pink

Techniques? Nymph, swinging, or single handed stripping.

Where? Deep and slow.

Reach? Anywhere Dam to Prewitt Creek. Pelican Boat Ramp is still off limits, unless you got a long rope and 4WD. Dearborn can be sketchy too. The rest are in great shape.

Missouri River Montana Winter Fishing Report 1.24.15

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Nice weekend upon us here in central Montana. Highs in the 40’s & 50’s, winter-time and the livin’ is easy.

It may be windy. Highs reaching 54F on Sunday with winds to 20. Good time to step outta the house and fish a little.

The walleye bite is said to be good, and bad, and mediocre depending on who you speak with. You gotta go to know! We got the Walleye Fly Stuff at the store. And some info?

The Rainbow bite? Good to great. Nymphing is the most common practice with the pink shit leading the pack. Big or small. But they gotta be near the bottom. Mostly slow ass waters but do not disregard some medium slow either. Fish it a little if you wish and see what happens.

Most of the activity near the dam. Seem familiar? Yep, if you want some sort of winter solace you gotta go below. WC, Craig, and even downriver of Craig have been common put-ins this winter. The trend should lean that same direction for some time.

Water temps in the 34F and below sector. Damn cold. Last couple winters we had temps in the 36F+ range for most of the winter.

USGS.06066500.15.00010..20150116.20150123..0.

Swingers out and catching some fish. Buggers, Skiddish Smolts, White Scuplins, Zonkers, Leeches, Kreelex have all been good.

Strippers getting fish too as they dead-drift the bugger/streamer and just keep tight on it. Really not stripping…more like holding and watching and feeling and knowing.

Dry fly? No not really. But some fish near the surface and some fish caught on tiny droppers. Not a bad idea to try a bigger attractor like Griffith’s Gnat or a Buzzball or an Adams.

Shop open daily for all your winter trout fishing needs. Info too.

Cabins for rent starting @ 125. Stop in and stay a while. Craiglodging.com

A couple spring items you may need in your travels. THe YETI Hopper Soft Sided Cooler is key for beginning th eyear out right. Why not fish and work in style and comfort with these KAST Raptor Gloves. Soft and fuzzy on the inside with thumb and forefinger cut offs for feel of the line. Nice. Both in stock and available on line too!

Missouri RIver Winter Fishing Report

Missouri River Winter Fishing Report 1.16.15

Pretty good stuff out there.

It is damn cold most days and there is ice on the shore, on the boat ramps, clogging you guides.

Joe’s Bar is open and the fire is burning til 2 am daily.

Look at the boat ramps before you choose your drift. Some folks have been stuck on the Craig boat ramp, Stickney, Wolf Creek. So either carry a big set or choose the dam, Spite, maybe Craig. We are doing shuttles when the air temps are floating above 32F. Well folks are fishing then. We’ll do your shuttle when the mercury dips below as well, but we find not as many hardy souls out when the wind chill plummets.

Shop open daily with brisk glove sales and the free coffee seems to be popular. Anglers getting their reservations in for the upcoming year. We’ve been quite busy with the phone work. Some 2 Handed Spey Rod sales too. The Echo Glass Rod getting lots of attention.

The Echo Glass Switch 11′ 6wt is my favorite, so far. A real easy casting feel. Nice. Come in and try any one of the 3 DEMO’s we have in stock. All 3 lengths in stock..

Back to the winger fishing report. Pink still.

The water temps are very cold and the fish are near stopped water. Just a 1/2 click above moving. Softly eating. 34.5F is the water temps. The air temps of 40F this weekend may raise the temps 1/4 of a degree during the day, Maybe. Water flows are near 4700cfs and that is pretty normal for this time of year.

Water flows as of January from the water folks predicting the future are below.

Missoiuri River Winter Fishing ReportSwingers are getting the trouts on  smaller bugger and leeches. Scandi lines with inter mediate tips are the most common with some Skagit-eers getting it done as well dredging with non weighted patterns.

Some midge around and some milling fish just subsurface. All normal winter action. We would not mind a couple water degrees warmer.

Cabins and the big house on the Craig Trout Camp available or rent this weekend. Rainbow and Brown Cabins @ $125 and the Craig House starts @ $150/2 guests. $50/head beyond that.

Come on by and we can help. Open at 8am and around til 5 daily. Some cool sale items, lots of Spey and Switch Fly Lines in stock along with stacks of single handed lines from RIO, Wulff, Airflo, Orvis, and Cortland. Some killer sale lines as well that have to go, now!

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 1.7.15

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 1.7.15

Still an unsettled weather pattern upon us. Not many anglers out on the water this week at all.

But the phone is ringing and folks are inking in their 2015 Missouri River Montana Fly Fishing Trip! A gentle reminder that the months of June and July book a year in advance and availability of guides and lodging is sinking fast, if not already gone. So, don’t be too surprised if you thought that calling in January for the coming mid summer rush is soon enough. Call today if you are at all interested in the dry fly months.

Back to the river here in Craig. Cold. The water temps are between 34.5 and 35F. Really quite cold. Ice in your guides often for sure. The flows are up to 4750cfs due to the extreme cold. Ice and slush in the river near Mid-Canon. Probably impassable when you near Prewitt Creek and totally blocked and a river bank to bank of ice chunks when you get the doctor’s house in the Cascade run.

In town this week, Great Falls, a shit show for sure. Cars in the ditch, on the highway the same. Folks that are too aggressive and those who are on the other end of the spectrum are in trouble. Do not travel if you cannot handle the snow. Just sayin’.

Fly Tying Night cancelled tonight due to weather and travel restrictions.

Pink is the word when we get to the fly selection of choice. Any shade of red. Faded red, pink, rose, even peachy? Oh yeah. Find the painfully slow stuff, cast, watch the bobber, wait, and set hard.

Swinging clinic that is sold through this weekend Saturday. If you need to expand your 2 handed quiver stop in and see us. We have in the neighborhood of 15 2 handed rods to try. SAGE, Echo graphite and glass, T & T, Orvis. Lines too.

A full winter fishing selection on hand if you choose either the single of double hander. Indicator lines by RIO, Spey from Airflo and RIO, VersiLeaders, and any number of other winter accouterments. Bobbers, splits, tippet, info, coffee.

Missouri River Montana 2015 Water Update

Missouri River Montana 2015 Water Update

The Missouri River Montana 2015 water flow projection. The snow is falling in the Rocky Mountains and stacking up for our summer water here in central Montana.

Several bouts of snow here locally and I know that the scattered storms crossing Montana are adding up to good news.

Missouri River Montana 2015 Water Update
Looking good all over the state.

As you can see on the map above that the snow water equivalent is right on track. We don’t get to excited until the percentages are grossly skewed to one side or the other. It generally balances out. The winter is predicted to be colder and drier than normal. So…

Great Falls recieves 9, 8, 12, and 9 inches of snow January thru April. So we have the wettest months ahead of us with May and June contributing over half of our annual precipitation.

What does that tell us? More snow, sleet,a dn rain ahead of us. While it seems like the winter is long, it is, we are just a 1/3 of the way through it.

That is why we have Fly Tying Night in America coming up this Wednesday night  530pm in Craig. Weather permitting. If it is downright shitty, we will cancel. Fly Tying Nights are scheduled every second Wednesday night beginning this Wednesday January 7th.

Missouri River Montana 2015 Water Update

2014 was an average water year. 2013 was below average. ’08, ’09, ’10, ’11 were all high water years. I believe that the norm is not the average. The norm is something well beyond the average.

We’re just passing along he current information and current snowfall, precipitation levels, and snow water equivalents.

We will keep you informed as the snow falls and the Missouri River Montana 2015 Water Forecast comes into shape. We really do not know much until we roll into late March, April and May. The snow fall is all on the ground in mid April. We will also post the DNRC prediction of water flows for the coming summer.

The flow they would like to hold though out the summer is 4200cfs. The projected big water level of about 10K cfs is what they, the water controllers, would like to see in June. Not 20K. But 15K is never too far out of the equation. If it rains 3+ inches in June, then we see some crazy shit. But, until then, we just guess a lot.

The Missouri River is a 12 month fishery with some ups, and some downs. Right now it is just cold and snowing. Give us a shout if you have any questions about water levels in any given month. We’ll guess right along with you.

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Happy New Year Headhunters. The Missouri River fared well as the Polar Plungers christened the waters once again in Craig @ High Noon starting the year of right!

Water temps for the plungers was  34.5F. Oh so cold. The trout are a touch on the slow side as well. Slush in the lower river most of the week. Probable for a couple more days of the same kind of icebergish water.

Below 36F, water temp, can slow the fishing down considerably. Usually does not slow the anglers down. Any day the weather is near freezing there are anglers about.

The water flows are up as the DNRC tries to alleviate shelf ice and anchor ice and other troubles that occur due to frigid air temps below 0F. 5K is the usual level for this quite common winter maneuver. Currently 4770cfs.

USGS.06066500.15.00010..20141225.20150101..0.
Let’s move it back to the 36F range.

A bunch of snow on the ground. 8+ here in Craig still. Settling has occurred. Looks like we may get some more spitting on us as the weekend and front end of the coming week. Temperatures increasing daily with highs in the 30’s in the future.

Check with the shop about the boat ramp situation if you are dumping your boat in the water. The obvious and usable ramps are the dam and Craig and Spite Hill. No shelf ice hindering any of those ramps. The steeper ramps including Wolf Creek, Stickney Creek and Dearborn are iced up as I write. Mid Canon is workable too.

Shuttles daily with rental boats out this week too. Guide trips available to get your year started right.

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 12.26.14

Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 12.26.14

Getting to look a lot like Christmas around here.

8″ of snow yesterday and getting colder all weekend long. By the time we get to Monday the daytime temps are cold enough to keep you from the water. Unless, unless it changes.

The anglers fishing before the storm, and Christmas Day have been doing quite well with the seasonal flies of choice. PINK…Lightening Bugs, Scuds, Sows, Czech’s, hot spotted midge, worms. Red is cool too.

Slow and shallow or medium depth or deep. Fins your hot spot and nymph e’m up.

Swingers and strippers are finding fish int he slowest of the slow at the back end of the drift. On the hang down. Twitch or tug at the end while crossing your fingers. That can be tough.

Water temps are holding above freezing at 36.5F. The colder air settling in for the weekend will drop that a bit. Missouri River water flows are 4280cfs. Pretty normal for the last few years. We should expect it to be stable for some time. Even if it moves up or down it will not be enough to change matters.

Actually a few midges around this last week again. Next week more?

Headhunters Fly Shop open all week long for your Missouri River needs like shuttles, guides, boats, flies, coffee, info, lodging, and a ton of simple bullshit. Fly shops have a lot of that kind of stuff…

Missouri River Winter Solstice Fishing Report 12.21.14

Missouri River Winter Solstice Fishing Report 12.21.14

The shortest day of the year. Not a bad day to fish the Missouri River near Craig Montana.

The fish gotta eat, even on the shortest day.

Terry Armstrong casting a 2 handed rod this last week on the Missouri River. Terry loves to fish. And fish he does with his 2 handed rod, a bamboo from Sweetgrass, and a few other favorites he has acquired over the years. You can commonly see Terry fishing the Mo a couple days a week.

Headhunters open daily, and today at 8am. We will be open for a short day on the 24th and closed, the only day of the year, closed on Christmas Day. Back open at 8am on the 26th, Canada’s Boxing Day. We will have a few guide trips out the week following Christmas. You could get on board with a post Christmas week guide trip. $300 Spey trips and $400 regular guide trips. Give us a shout for a timely guide trip this Christmas season.

The fishing? Good. Nymphing is really quite good in the winter months. The fish are only in specifically painfully slow water. Deep and slow. When you find them, you got them.

The weather for the week ahead is normal. Some snow, some clouds, some wind, and you. Highs in the upper 30’s and into the 40’s.

Pink Flies Rule.

Pink is the word. The latest word on the street, or river, is Pink Lightening Bugs in the am and moving toward the AMEX Czech, Firebead, or Caviar type flies. Sows are still in fashion with Zebra’s never falling from grace.

Find the slowest stuff and ply your trade. Use the right amount of split. You can go split less if you desire. The slower water allows the flies to be int he zone a while, slower water more time in the water sinking…keep them in and hit ’em hard if the bobber hiccups. Stop in and we can get you pointed in the right winter direction. We got it all from bobbers to split shots to the right flies and a clue about the right kind of water.

The water temps are holding at their historically normal levels. 36.5F is quite normal. When it gets colder than 36F things do slow down a bit. But if it stays in this range warming a quarter of a degree once in a while the fish stay pretty active. They gotta eat.

Water flows are below the historical average but that is quite common in the last decade. Lower snow packs and levels have required the water managers to err on the safe side. Flows are 4400cfs with the norm being nearly 5000cfs. A nice wade fishing level. Anything near 5K is a good winter flow and makes for easy access.

Rainbows are quite healthy in the winter. They do gain weight as the winter moves towards early spring. They spawn in the spring and hence the weight gain. Browns are losing the fat as the winter progresses and the rainbows are going the other direction. Rainbows lose fat in the summer months post spawn.

The streamer and 2 handed anglers are faring well this week too. The river didi have a green tint to it the last couple weeks. Still does.

Smaller flies have been the theme. Black buggers, black leeches, bastardized buggers, Skip’s Minnows, Skiddish Smolts, R2R, Superflash Zonkers, Micro Zonkers, and many more. Come in for a great streamer selection, best on the river.
