Thursday Snow on the Mighty Mo!

Snowing in Craig Wednesday. More today? The weather guesser said it would.

Cooler this weekend than last. Highs in the lower 30’s.

Overcast.

This previous weekend gave us a taste of spring. But, thankfully it is a month or two away. Let’s stack up some of the white stuff in the hills, the mountains, the Rockies. For summer. Summer water is important.

So do your freaky snow dance in the office today. Invite a couple of your work posse over and do the funky jive.

Pattern it after this marvelous dancer below…

KAST Steelhead Glove New and Improved!

KAST Steelhead Glove New and Improved!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

KAST Steelhead Glove New and Improved!

How could our #1 selling fishing glove be improved? We did not design it, we just love it. And, the crew at KAST has improved the now legendary Steelhead Glove.

The only fishable fishing glove used by anglers arose this great land has been improved on many levels.

Traditional waterproof gloves use a membrane that is nothing more than a giant bag, inserted between glove layers. Moisture is trapped inside the glove, creating a cold damp feeling. Your hands are dry, but they are still cold because you literally have a moisture barrier that inhibits breathability, and acts as a cooling layer inside the glove.

KAST Steelhead Gloves are designed to keep your hands bone-dry, give you maximum dexterity, and provide a layer of warmth when fishing in cold environments. Patented OutDry technology makes our gloves 100% waterproof/submersible, windproof, and breathable. Plus the warm fleece lining, and durable stretch shell give you the snug fit and uncompromising feel that you need in the fingertips, and an extended cuff for valuable additional coverage at the wrist. Go ahead, chase chrome in a snow squall, or tail a trophy king in frigid water, you can trust your hands will stay warm and dry.

Easy on and easy off make this glove more usable than many of the options on the market. While we consider the classic wooly fingerless glove the ultimate in fishing gloves, we cannot live without this glove for most/the rest of our day. Rowing, putting the boat in and out, releasing fish, swinging, nymphing, and all around winter hilarity.

This is a glove that the entire staff @ HH cannot live without. Created for 4 season swingers the KAST Steelhead glove tackles our cold and damp winter weather with ease. This updated model raises the bar on fishing gloves that most competitors will never achieve.

Come in and try these babies on. You will not be disappointed. Enjoy winter fishing here on the Missouri River and beyond. Order yourself a set today. They make perfect gifts for those anglers in your family that have everything.

I don’t like Fly Fishing, I love it!

This 10 cc tune, Dreadlock Holiday, has been covered a thousand times. And why not.

Today here on the river it is cold. Again. Winter has returned. Which we feel is good. Currently 8F. And some snow yesterday turned the landscape into a white wintery escape.

So without much going on as far as anglers in the shop we turn to Dreadlock Holiday. John and I discussing fly shop philosophy along with our fantastic Headhunters Players.

The phones are ringing with bookings for the upcoming season. Not too much guiding this week though. The drifters are frozen to the trailer.

Enjoy Dreadlock Holiday with this sketchy not so Hi-Fidelity video of 10cc. Followed by the live version from a recent concert. And then the covers from many if you search around on the YouTube Planet.

This catchy jingle will stay with you for a while. I use it to warm my soul.

I don’ like fly fishing, I love it!

Big night in Craig Montana. Fly Tying Night in America Wednesday Jan 18th.

A loose gathering. No lesson based stuff. A free for all with some beer, sometimes chips.

Lots of BS and some fly tying too.

Fly Tying Night in America Wednesday Jan 18th 5pm til about 8pm. A couple hours for sure.

I’m tying winter nymphs. You? What are you tying. I usually tie Buzzballs.

We are just having a few of these this year so join us Wednesday night.

Come on down and tie up one of our famous Just Add Vise Kits.

Enjoy the Just Add Vise Kits Mozuri Minnow today from the mind/vise of John Arnold. His take on the Yozuri plugs that some fish in the saltwater. This fly works. Rides weedless, looks like a stugglin’ rainbow, and is flat out cool.

The Natural World Video

I met Tom Melvin this last October at the Headhunters Fly Shop Advanced Fly Fishing School. I was unloading the truck with beer, food, and various fly fishing gear. Tom walked up and introduced himself.

I got to know Tom the following four days. Tom is a Catholic Priest. An interesting feller who loves to fish. Like so many of us, he has a job too. I really liked Tom. An outdoorsman who has a truly interesting past. He has served in the Navy and held various roles within the Catholic Church.

Tom is threatening to come back to the Missouri this year. I bet he does.

On the last morning Tom showed me this video. I loved it.  We are always looking for fish media that has a message. Other than Bro-brah stuff. And, this short is fantastic.

If you don’t get to church today…and instead watch football all day…at least watch this vid!

Wild Trout: A Montana Fish Story

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Wild Trout: A Montana Fish Story

A cool Montana film to watch this morning as the calendar turns a page.

Happy New Year!

Hope you are not nursing anything to severe today. If you are, turn back over and sleep it off.

At high noon in Craig we have the Annual Polar Bear Plunge. It will be damn cold, with air temps in the mid-teens, and snow falling from the sky.

Gonna be really quite frigid for the next week. At least for the coming week. Some daytime highs will not crawl above ZERO. Highs below zero. That is cold man. Definitely ice in your guides!

We will be in the store for most of it unless we call an audible and stay home for travel safety reasons. January kicks off the booking season and we are ready with our capable booking staff at the ready.

2016 was a fantastic year for us @ Headhunters in downtown Craig.  2017 will be more of the same. We will be celebrating our 10th year here on the Missouri River. We are so fortunate to be in the fly fishing game. Fun times, great staff, and the best customers in Montana and beyond.

We love to help anglers young and old, novice to expert, nymphers to dry fly fanatics.

Look for more entertainment this coming year from Headhunters. A return of our popular Advanced Fly Fishing School in the fall, a couple new world class fishing guides, lots more Trout Spey Education including the best in 2 handed products, 10th Annual Caddis Fest and BBQ Cook-Off, Browns and Brews Fest Labor Day Weekend, our Fan Favorite Spring Special $350 Guide Trips beginning March 15th, Blackfoot River Trips, BBQ’s, free casting lessons, Fly Tying Nights ,and much, much more from your favorite Missouri River fly shop.

Welcome to 2017! Plan it. Enjoy it. Fish it!

It’s Fly Tying Time Just Add Vise Kits!

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

It’s Fly Tying Time Just Add Vise Kits!

It is tying time in America! Post Christmas Blues got you down? Well perk up with the JAV KITS and tie up some spring and summer flies.

May of us try to catch up and prepare for the upcoming trout season by tying our asses of in the winter months. My theory has always been to tie a ton of the EZ flies. Then buy the hard ones. Any fly with more than 6 or more steps is something I want to get at the fly shop. So I tie a bunch of dirty worms, Zebra’s, Weight flies, Firebeads, ants, Buzzball’s and the like.

What do you tie at home. I know that before I became a fishing guide I tied lots  of short run patterns too. All kinds of creative dry flies too. Those days are unfortunately behind me and I miss them. I love to tie flies. A great evening journey along with a glass of brown water that sometimes lasts until the morning.

Get your Just Add Vise Kits @ Headhunters

Our JUST ADD “VISE” fly tying kits are super popular and many customers buy several kits to get them through the winter! These kits are designed for tyers who have grasped the basic moves of fly tying, and are priced just as if you bought the materials individually. The package comes with everything needed to tie 2 dozen flies, and has a material list included so you can re-supply when needed. You can watch our short “how-to” videos if you need help with a step or two. These are extremely fun along with the video are great for those camped out on the Missouri River or camped out in the basement for the week! Just make sure you have your vice, scissors and bobbin. If not, we have that stuff as well!

FIREBEAD RAY CHARLES

Take the best sowbug patterns and put a Firebead on it. You have an egg pattern. You also have one of the most popular early season flies and winter patterns on the water. We’ve put together this Firebead Ray Fly Tying kit that will allow you to tie up 2 dozen flies for your next fishing trip.

Fishski Revisited Scumliner Media

Hoep you are on your couch today and not at the office.

But if you are at the office we suggest you watch this video. Even if you have seen it before.

We are still chilly here in downtown Craig but we are warming as the week goes on. Then cold as we return to the weekend and the New Year.

There is enough snow on the ground if you want to put on your rock skis and head out onto the Missouri River slopes. Although we suggest you do it at your local ski area.

The High Bank slope is sweet though. Holding snow.

It may slough. But that is just speculation…

Best Christmas Movie Ever?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Best Christmas Movie Ever?

Red Ryder Comic
Red Ryder Comic

A Christmas Story is a great Christmas Movie. My wife likes Home Alone. I agree. But this classic from ’83 rules. I usually watch it several times on Christmas day. TBS runs it fro 24 hrs on Christmas Day. I love it.

This year I couldn’t wait and got it on Amazon so I could watch it several times cleaning the house before the holiday.

I had a shitty model of a Daisy BB Gun as kid. I’m not complaining at all. Plenty of fun regardless. But it was no Red Ryder Model 1938. Why 1938? Because the long running western comic strip started way back in ’38. The Daisy Red Ryder came on the market in 1940. And is still selling strong. A perfect gift for a boy.

Couple that with a ECHO Gecko and your kid will be the happiest one on the block.

Headhunters Fly Shop Weekend Business Hours

Big storm headed our way so we will be closed both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. We are usually open on Christmas Eve, but not this year. The weather has us taking the safe way out.

Back open on the 26th at 8am.

Upcoming Headhunters Events.

The January sessions of the Free Spey Clinic are nearly sold through. I think one of the days is booked, and a few spots open on the Sunday session. Call today to get aboard or get your name on the waiting list.

Headhunters Fly Tying Nights coming in January. Starting January 18th at 5pm. Other dates to follow. But we usually have a bout 4 or 5 sessions. Not tying lessons. Mostly just a few of us tying up some winter and spring patterns and drinking light beer and watching some strange YouTube videos and the like.

Our annual Spring Special from March 15th through the end of April is on deck as well. Discounted spring fishing and lodging. More on this topic as we get into the new year.

Swing Season is back on. The water temps have stabilized in the low 30’s. So sluggish trout out there. But if you like to get your 2 handed game on we are here as your Missouri River based support group. We have all the latest in Trout Spey gear and the knowledge too. Demo rods, lines, and if you would like the winter is a great time to learn about your next big thing.

Pink flies on inside slack ass winter water daily here on the Mo. The rainbows are fat and cold. Wolf Creek to Craig. A good winter float. Good wading from Craig up to the dam as well. Stop in and get the latest on what, where, when, why, and how from the HH Winter Fishing Team.
