Missouri River Montana Fishing Report 8.9.13

Not crowded is the theme for the week, even the month of August on the Missouri. While many believe that Montana is closed, it’s not. This is a very nice time of year as the July crowds have thinned and the fishing bounces back.

64.5F in the afternoons dropping to 62.5F in the mornings. Good water temps are allowing us to fish longer throughout the day with the afternoon hiatus nearly all but forgotten. Unless we get a batch of extended heat we will not see any more heat of the day slowing.

Hi’s in the mid 80’s with lows in the low to mid 50’s is what the future holds. Looks like a good weekend to fish the Mighty Missouri River near Craig Montana. Come on down and see us for a guide trip or a batch of flies, eh.

[forecast]

Hopper fishing continues to be a plan for many. Good action can be had on any given day. Use your favorite larger pattern for some surface strikes.

Small dry fly action is steady to strong. Are there many groups of teeming rising fish? No, who needs those easy fish. Singles and doubles can be located with some sleuthing around. Top to bottom the Trico is good. Many anglers are done with that specific hatch.

Good. No fish on them anyway…

Nymphing is good too. The folks are having success with deeper rigs, floating rigs, and mid range rigs. So, find your special depth and get ’em.

The big Margarita event tomorrow @ Headhunters Fly Shop. Maybe some other kick ass mini events as well. Check it out on your TGIF Headhunters Style.
