It is finally dry fly season here on Montana’s Missouri River. And no better time to get your Headhunter Fly Line on that dry fly rod of yours.
For sale for nearly a year we could not be happier with the success of our first foray into line design. A proprietary line design and dry fly line like no other on the market.
After years of trying every fly line on the market – and never finding exactly what we wanted – we decided to design our own line, specifically for technical dry fly fishing on the Missouri River.
The Headhunter Fly Line is designed for the medium to long casts we perform every day. Casts that require pinpoint accuracy, long-leader turnover, delicate presentation, yet the power to defeat the ever present Montana wind.
We also created a stealthy sky colored line with a zone that helps anglers understand how much line to have off the rod tip to maximize false casting and line pick-up. Mission accomplished. And it turns out it’s a pretty darn great line for swinging soft-hackles, presenting short-leash nymph rigs, and general attractor dry fly fishing.

A 21.5′ front taper with a 5′ mid section followed by a 24.5 rear taper. A Double Delta Taper, and industry first, that will bring a new level of efficiency to your dry fly game.
The Performance Zone really works well. Easy line pick-up at the 25′ mark. Just strip in line until the Lime Green portion enters the rod tip and cast. The Performance Zone is 15′ in length. You can pick up the line easily from the water anywhere with in the Lime portion. And the color change is easily seen in the air too. Meaning you can use it to your advantage while false casting. The Headhunter Line is designed to cast the best within this zone. For the 25′-60′ dry fly casts we so commonly encounter.

Hope all is well. Congratulations on the recent launch of your in-house line brand. I purchased the 5 weight line for my Sage Method last week. I am still evaluating it. I usually run Rio Gold on the Method. The HeadHunters line seems quite a bit heavier. Can you provide your best guess on the grain weighting for the first 30 feet of line? Just trying to figure out if this an over-weighted line like a Rio Grand. Thanks and wishing you much success!

Barton. Thanks. YEs, the grain weight is about 15 grains heavier. But not in the first 30′ Distributed in the first 51′.
Still fishing Sage VPS sticks here in Michigan. Would you up line weight for these rods? Great sticks with a smooth Med-Fast action. Thanks!
Great question John. I would not, no. Line weight as is. There is enough energy in the Double Delta Taper to get the job done. Should match up well with the VPS for sure.

I was wondering about the true weight of the line, 15 grains heavy over the total 51′ head. So the 4wt line’s long head is 135 grains? Is the mass distributed evenly throughout the head, since front and rear tapers about the same? I’m using an Infinity on the NRX LP, which is a 1/2 line heavy at 130gr and feels like too much line. If your line is 128-ish at 30′ then probably still too much. I realize that the first 30′ is arbitrary these days with all of the complex tapers out there. I’ll try to get over there and cast the line on my rod, it sounds great, but I think I need a standard weight line.
Great John. Talked yourself right into it. The weight point in near the 3/5 of the head mark. 30′. This is a fly line designed specifically for casting dry flies accurately at 25′ to 50′ with Rocky Mountain wind on the side, or back, or face! Not for nymphing, streamer fishing, delicate very tight quarters fishing, those who do not stop the rod on the front cast, not a line for novices. A Headhunting Line made by Headhunters. A very specific use line for all technical dry fly situations where accuracy is imperative and wind can be an issue. Big river dry fly line for big river situations. Thanks John. I have finished the HH lines on asquith 4 and 5 weights, they are great well designed lines. My only suggestion is that you make a version that is a tad lighter in the lime section as gets a bit chunky carrying a lot of line.
