Jake, the Drake, and Headhunters Fly Shop

Headhunters staffer Jake is famous.

And carp got him there.

You know the guy. A tall glass of water with an oversized smile on his face. Excited. Really excited.

Yah, you know him.

Former Headhunters All Star Jess McGlothlin writes, shoots great images, and roams the countryside whipping up photo-prose like the article in the current issue of the Drake. Jessica was with us for the spring and summer and fall sessions before heading off to the wet side of the mountains and the big cityscapes of the Puget Sound.

And Jake…Jake had applied to work for Headhunters Fly Shop for 3 years. And, then, and then we hired him.

And then, he became a Carp Fisherman.

While some of us, Jake, fish for Carp parts of the year, we do have guided Carp trips. About 1 or 2 per year. Most of our guests are after the wily trout.

We even have guide trips out this week in the bitter cold. Trout fishing never stops here on Montana’s Missouri River.

The article refers to the Carp fishing on the lake above us here in Craig. Yes, part of the Missouri River, Holter Lake, is a recreationalists paradise. Water skiing, wake boarding, walleye and perch fishing, trolling for land locked salmon, ice fishing, and yes carp fishing.

Let me just say that brownlining is not the most popular activity on Holter Lake.

Jake is the hero of this story, really. He came to work for us and withstood lots of punishment. He certainly was the low man on the totem pole. Resilience is what Jake possesses. A ton of it. He stayed with us until the end of the season through thick and thin. Thanks Jake for having the balls to stick with us, even as at times the entire staff was yelling at you!

While Jake caught a few Carp this previous simmer, he also caught a bunch of Missouri River Trout. He improved his casting skills tremendously, learned about classic fly patterns like an H & L Variant, what a rotary phone was, customer service skills, how to tone down his enthusiasm to a level that would not scare customers, and even did some sneaking around for those nocturnal stones we are not supposed to have…

So, pick up your copy of the latest Drake and enjoy!
