Holiday Week Fishing Report and Schedule

Holiday Week Schedule

Monday of the holiday week ahead. Lets hope you are working a short week and playing hard this weekend. Or just eating, fishing, and napping.

We are headlong into our winter hours 8-6 daily. The only shop open in Craig this winter with consistent fly shop hours. On Thanksgiving we will be open from 8am til about 1pm. If you want a to float and get a shuttle, we will see you before noon as we would like to get out and enjoy the holiday as well.

Then Friday we are back to the normal schedule. We will definitely see some college kids out fishing this weekend. Enjoying the short break and dipping a few flies into the water. We love to see the youth of this sport. They are the next generation and are pushing the envelope every time they fish.

The Trout Spey Store on the Mo. Headhunters has all of the coolest and necessary products not he shelf. The largest comprehensive Trout Spey fly line selection in the state of Montana. All the good from OPST, Airflo, RIO, and SA. Skagit, Scandi and beyond. The tips, the leaders, the running lines, and more of it than anybody else. And you know Ninch has a great selection of flies to choose from. We never stop here in downtown Craig.

Nymphing is still the best way to get the net wet. Sows, Scuds, Worms, and Mayfly nymphs are all on fire. But why not just tie on a couple sows and let ‘er ride. Try 4′ in the am and 3’ during the pm bite.

usgs-06066500-82404-00010-20161113-20161120-0Swingers are doing better too. The last couple hours of the day have proven to be the best for the two handed crew. As the light moves perpetually westward the fishing heats up. Black and slender has been good. White and skinny. Brown and anemic. Gold and not so gaudy. The intermediate tips have been on par for streamer success.

The dry fly bite? Difficult. Yes. Not many bugs. None really. Have had some good fish rise to larger attractor patterns though. We have a wide variety of posted cluster midge patterns and parachute flies. Tie off an emerger from th shook bend or drop off a small beaded jobbie.

Flows are  holding at 3690 cfs and water temps dropping slowly. Still in good shape for the late fall early winter bite. Pretty strong really. I’m sure it will not last forever. So why not get out here and fish a little before it all goes south.

Winter Guide Trip rates start on Black Friday. $450 trips. More on this later. Lots of winter lodging on tap as well. The comprehensive lodging site on the river is www.CraigLodging.com Why not stay in Craig? Lots of room here. The Craig Trout Camp never closes. Many folks stay in one of our local cabins or on the river with their friends and family for the holidays. Tie in fishing, wing shooting, and lodging all in one place. Check out Craig Trout Camp too. Full hook up RV spaces available as well. Fun times all winter long in Craig MT.

Stop in and fill up your coffee cup on your Montana travels. Why not. Coffee in and coffee out. Two important parts of travel. We will be here with bells on.

And, Happy Holidays. Enjoy the week with your friends and family.
