Headhunters Fly Shop Fishing Report May 12th
The long and short of it today, but mostly the short of it. Highlights if you will. Or, need to know info.
Getting pretty good out there this May. BWO’s still on the water daily along with Caddis on the lower river. Great nymphing both deep and short. Pretty good.
Summer water flows were boosted earlier this week with a nice shot of cold and wet weather that ravaged Montana. Not a game changer but you know what they say about a gift horse. Inflows into Canyon Ferry are 9962 cfs with the reservoir at 85.9% filled. Looking for 97% the 4th week in June. So we have 5 weeks to get there. Looks pretty solid to me, but I am a fishing guide. Soooo….not too smart. I think we will be at our normal 4200 cfs mark for the summer.
The other Montana big rivers are in the tank. Choco Milk style. So lots of anglers here visiting the Mo this week. Cooler weather will shape them up in a few days. But certainly traffic around on the river. Lots of folks are canyon crazy. The Dearborn River is running clear at 409. Falling too. Little Prickly Pear @ 79cfs and the Mighty Mo is 4500ish.
Fish late if you like a fair dose of solace. Enjoy it out there. Give other anglers room. Don’t screw the dog at the boat ramp. Buy new fly lines at Headhunters. Izaak’s open everyday but Monday. The Driftwood Bar in Cascade will feed you a burger late. Just call up Wendy on your way. HH open daily 7am til 8pm. Your top flight shop destination on your Missouri River trip.
One of our favorite hangouts on the Mo. EOL Rocks!
