As the snow fall this morning I am reminded that we are heading headlong into my favorite time of year.
The colors changing, the browns spawning, the pace slowing as the days become shorter.
The fishing is just fantastic. But, any day can certainly give you fits. I have had some fits this last week. The mrnings have been puzzling at times and most are fishing deep at the start of the day. Then progressing shallower as the day drifts by.
The dry fly action yesterday was unreal. Very good rising trout from about 1pm til ? Riverwide. You should enjoy some of this action this fall if you are at all able.
- PT’s, scuds, worms, FB’s, and midge pupa will fill your dance card for the day.
- How about a black bugger to get you started for your subsurface stripping game.
- Dry fly dudes are tossing cripples with success.
The weather is shitty today with some forecasting hi’s only reaching the low 40’s. Will feel cooler than that on the water. Sleeting right now as I pound out this report before heading to the river for more trout angling excitement.
Shades of Fall
The fishing really and truly has been fantastic. Better that the last few October time periods, and September too. We really feel we have a damn good one upon us now.
Look for days like today for excellent dry fly action as the bugs can become frozen to the surface allowing for those hungry trout to eat many of them. Many and tons. Blanket hatches last longer when the weather is acting like it is today!
So, embrace the shit falling from the sky. A combination of glue & shit equals Glit. That is good for fishing. Plenty of Glit for this Thursday on the Missouri River.
NOAA says: Rain and snow, becoming all rain after noon. Snow level rising to 4200 feet. High near 42. North northeast wind 16 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.
[forecast]
River flows @ 2920cfs and the water temperature has fallen a full degree overnight. 56F this morning. Maybe falling all day long…Yah, the baetis gotta be running to the surface soon!
Bring your box of soft hackles and a warm hat. We’ll see you in the shop for hot free coffee killing time before the hatch gets rolling.
Enjoy this weather. The trout do!
